The Legendary Method Actor

A sharp knock on the door pulled Ray from his thoughts.

”Enter.”

Ray called out, waving a hand to dismiss the transparent interface with Bastian’s information on it.

The door opened, and Svane stepped inside, his massive frame instantly making the spacious office feel a little cramped. Right behind him was Rina. She had washed the blood from her arms and face, and changed out of her ruined gala dress into a casual, unassuming gray day-dress. The frantic terror had left her, thanks to the meditation techniques, but the dark circles under her eyes and the tight set of her jaw showed she was still carrying the crushing weight of Master Alvon’s accusations.

Gino, the senior staffer Lady Jane had assigned to Ray, stepped in just behind them. He was holding a thick, folded parchment.

”A missive from Lady Jane, my Lord. The household report you requested.”

Gino said with a polite bow, offering the document.

”Thank you, Gino, you can continue to wait outside.”

Ray said, taking the thick parchment.

Gino bowed again and retreated, closing the door firmly behind him.

With the room secured, Svane immediately dropped his formal, rigid bodyguard posture. He let out a low, rumbling breath, his stoic face betraying a deep, protective worry as he looked between Ray and Rina.

”Have you made progress, my Lord? Have we found the bastard who did this?”

Svane said, his voice dropping to a heavy gravel.

”We have a prime suspect, a minor noble alchemist named Bastian Sterling. The poison used to incapacitate Warren was highly sophisticated, and Sterling fits the profile perfectly. Furthermore, we have a witness that said he heard he was arguing with Warren earlier right here in this office.”

Ray confirmed, leaning against the edge of the desk.

”Then let us go! Point me at him. Or point me at anyone else who is withholding information. I will break them until they speak.”

Svane growled, his massive fists clenching at his sides.

Ray shook his head gently.

”We can’t. An Aegis’ brute force will only cause these nobles to close ranks. We are operating on borrowed time and borrowed authority. If you start throwing aristocrats against the wall, Headmaster Andrade will revoke my jurisdiction in a heartbeat. This isn’t a battlefield, Svane.”

Svane let out a heavy, frustrated sigh, his broad shoulders slumping. He looked down at his massive, calloused hands. He was a weapon forged for battle, a shield meant to absorb catastrophic damage. But in this shadow war of poison, politics, and whispered lies, he felt completely useless.

Ray saw the frustration radiating from his friend. He stepped forward, catching the giant warrior’s eye.

”Do not mistake your role here, Svane. Your presence alone, the lethal threat you project, is the only reason Master Alvon’s guards haven’t dragged Rina to the stockades yet. You are the shield holding the wolves at bay. Let me be the scalpel.”

Ray said he used his innate ‘Shared Resolve’ skill, his voice carrying the firm, undeniable weight of the situation.

Svane met Ray’s gaze, the tension in his jaw loosening slightly. He gave a single, slow nod.

”Understood.”

Ray turned his attention to the thick folded document in his hand. He unfolded the heavy parchment. It was Warren Ramada’s final curated report to Lady Jane, detailing the mundane affairs of the estate while the family was on their kingdom-wide tour.

Ray’s eyes scanned the elegant, sweeping calligraphy. The first few pages were standard logistics, staff rotations, and minor budget adjustments.

Then, a brief, highly coded paragraph caught his eye.

Warren had written a short blurb regarding the ‘special botanical project’ requested by Lady Jane. He did not provide any explicit details or names, but he noted that progress was agonizingly slow due to the severe nature of the ‘ailments.’ However, Warren expressed strong optimism, noting that the required botanical ‘Moonpetal Flower’ was suddenly appearing in the open market and the underground markets.

Scholar: ”He was tracking the supply Moonpetal Flowers. Warren knew he could accelerate the treatments if he had more of it, to cure more of Lady Jane’s friends.”

Ray continued reading, flipping to the final page. The heading read: Gala Preparations.

Most of the entries were mundane updates on the floral arrangements and the acoustic enhancements for the ballroom. But the final paragraph, written in Warren’s impeccably polite ‘Butler-speak,’ was noticed by Ray.

“I must inform you, My Lady, of a severe operational friction with Head Chef Aris regarding the evening’s menu. I have given her your alteration requests to accommodate the specific dietary requirements of some of our VIP guests. Madame Aris took extreme offense to this, citing a disruption to the ’artistic flow and integrity’ of her culinary presentation. We engaged in a spirited disagreement. I ultimately found it necessary to leverage the full authority of my position to secure her compliance for the evening’s service. However, I have to report her insubordination, I believe it was severe enough that I strongly recommend her immediate termination!”

Ray lowered the parchment.

In the Ambient Presence of Ray’s mind, the committee instantly discussed the polite prose.

Courtier: ”A ’spirited disagreement’ over ’artistic integrity.’ Translation: The Chef flew into a violent, screaming rage because Warren ruined her masterpiece to appease some guests.”

Detective: ”And Warren didn’t just ’leverage his authority.’ He probably forced her to cook the most important meal of her career under the explicit threat that she was going to be fired, disgraced, and thrown out onto the street if she did not comply with the request.”

Ray looked up, his golden-flecked eyes hardening. He now had a second suspect.

The Head Chef had absolute dominion over food, drink, and ingredients. She was one of the few people who could logically say to Warren:

”Meet me in the cellar to discuss the wine pairings for these new requests.”

without raising his suspicion. And if Warren died tonight, the only man who can recommend her termination. She would keep her prestigious job and her pristine reputation without worry from now on.

”We are moving.”

Ray announced, folding the report and sliding it into his coat.

Ray, Svane, and Rina exited the office. Gino snapped to attention in the corridor.

”Gino.”

Ray called, his tone measured.

”Are you familiar with the House Starr Head Chef?”

”Head Chef Aris? Yes, My Lord, I know her. She was hired about a year ago, on the recommendation of Young Master Dylan.”

Gino replied with a polite nod.

”And what was her relationship like with Mr. Ramada?”

Ray pressed.

Gino hesitated, his eyes darting toward the heavy oak door of the office of the head butler. He lowered his voice.

”To be completely honest, My Lord... they were not on good terms. Mr. Ramada was close to the previous head chef whom Madame Aris replaced. Since she arrived, they have had many arguments over many things, from the food to the ingredients, even household logistics. But recently... today, specifically, it was the worst it has ever been.”

Gino looked left and right the empty corridor, leaning in slightly to share the hushed rumor.

”Now I personally did not witness this, but I heard they had a terrible screaming match this afternoon. I heard that at the end of the argument, Head Chef Aris finally agreed to comply with the menu changes. But before she stormed off, she screamed at him: ’I will cook your stupid food, but before the night ends, I will kill you for making me do this!’”

Rina gasped as her hand covered her mouth, Ray exchanged a sharp, meaningful look with Svane. A verbal death threat delivered just hours before Warren was found murdered.

Gino blinked, his confusion mounting as he watched the chilling realization settle over the three of them. He swallowed nervously, stepping back half a pace.

”If... if I may be bold, My Lord.”

Gino stammered slightly, his professional veneer cracking under the sudden, suffocating tension.

”May I ask what this is about? I know I was tasked by Lady Jane to assist you tonight, but she did not provide any details. Has something happened?”

Ray’s internal committee in his Ambient Presence instantly clashed over how to handle the staffer’s inquiry.

Courtier: ”Tell him nothing. Information is leverage, and you are bleeding it dry. If you confirm the Head Butler has been murdered, you risk a household-wide panic. A panicked servant is a loose tongue.”

Conman: ”He isn’t stupid. He saw Rina covered in blood earlier, and now he is seeing this reaction. If you feed him a convenient lie right now, he will see right through it, and we will lose his trust completely.”

Detective: ”We need him to find Bastian Sterling quickly. A servant looking for a missing guest will do a casual, polite sweep. A man hunting his mentor’s killer will tear the manor apart to find him.”

Commander: ”The Detective is right. Blind obedience is fragile; it shatters the moment the pressure gets too high. True loyalty requires trust. Give the man his battle lines so he knows exactly what he is fighting for.”

Ray absorbed the rapid-fire debate and made a calculated decision. He did not initiate a Partial Immersion. He didn’t use the World Weary Healer’s ‘Calming Presence’ or the Grizzled Commander’s ‘Command Aura.’ He simply looked the man in the eye, offering genuine, unmanipulated trust.

”Gino… Mr. Ramada is dead. He was murdered earlier this evening. We are currently investigating it and I need your help. This investigation must remain a secret for now.”

Ray said, his voice quiet but carrying absolute certainty.

Gino froze as the words struck him. The color completely drained from his face. His eyes darted to Rina, the memory of her blood-soaked uniform from a while ago suddenly taking on a horrifying, devastating context.

A wave of undisguised grief washed over the man’s features. Despite the strict, demanding hierarchy of the household, Warren had been the absolute bedrock of House Starr for decades. To hear he had been murdered in his own domain was unthinkable.

But Gino was a veteran of the estate. He closed his eyes for a brief second, taking a deep, shuddering breath to force the grief down into a tight knot in his chest. When he opened his eyes again, the fear and confusion were gone, replaced by a cold, hardened determination.

”My Lord, I want to help. If there is anything you need, anything at all, you just tell me.”

Gino said, his voice completely steady now, driven not by Lady Jane’s mandate, but by his own fierce intent.
