The Legendary Method Actor

For the past two weeks, the landscape outside Ray’s window had been the untamed wilderness and sometimes a rolling, empty plains. But as they finally crossed the official border into the Greywood Domain, the scenery shifted dramatically.

Ray leaned against the carriage window, his eyes scanning the horizon. The change was immediate and staggering.

The last time he had traveled this road, this entire stretch of the domain had been completely indistinguishable from the untamed wilderness. It had been a chaotic sea of overgrown thickets, deep-rooted weeds, and barren dirt that the locals had surrendered to the wild a long time ago.

Now, that very same wild land had been meticulously cleared. In its place stretched massive, organized farmlands. Neat rows of tilled earth and thriving crops painted the landscape in vibrant hues of green and gold. Even more impressive, the expansion wasn’t stopping; Ray could see distant crews of laborers actively burning away brush and prepping fresh acreage for cultivation.

But it wasn’t just the land that had changed. The roads themselves were alive.

Ray observed a steady, bustling stream of travelers moving in the same direction. There were wooden carts piled high with tools, small merchant caravans, and families walking alongside mules laden with their life’s possessions. These weren’t desperate refugees fleeing a warzone; their faces held the determined, hopeful look of laborers, craftsmen, and farmers seeking genuine opportunity.

It was a welcome, beautiful sight. Ray knew better than anyone that a domain’s true strength didn’t lie merely in gold or ancient artifacts, it lay in its human resources. Skilled labor and a thriving population were the lifeblood of a powerful territory.

As the carriage pressed on, the familiar, towering silhouettes of the Whispering Hills loomed in the distance. Nestled securely at the foot of the expansive mountain range was Whisper Town, the primary settlement and economic hub of Greywood Domain.

Ray remembered the town vividly. A couple of years ago, before he had departed for Solhaven Academy, he and Rina had traveled down to Whisper Town to find the craftsman Fletcher who was capable of fixing his hunting bow. Back then, it had been a depressing, dilapidated village. Most of the shops had been boarded up, the streets were empty, and the dwindling population had looked worn down by poverty and the constant threat of starvation.

As the carriage crested the final hill, revealing the settlement below, Ray actually leaned forward in his seat.

It was completely unrecognizable.

Whisper Town had transformed into a booming, vibrant frontier town. Scaffolding surrounded dozens of new, multi-story wooden buildings. The rhythmic sound of hammers and saws echoed through the valley as roofs were thatched and roads were widened. The streets were absolutely packed with people, carts, and commerce.

Sitting across from Ray, Rina was wide-eyed and utterly speechless for a while. She pressed her hands against the glass, her jaw slightly slack as she took in the drastic, miraculous change to her homeland.

”Young Master...Are you certain the driver took the correct road? Is this... is this really Whisper Town?”

Rina whispered, her voice laced with heavy disbelief.

Ray kept his eyes fixed on the bustling streets outside, feeling his own wave of incredulity wash over him. It was almost impossible to reconcile the thriving, chaotic boomtown before them with the quiet, dying village in his memories.

”The geography is correct, Rina. We are at the foot of the Whispering Hills, but... I must admit, I am having a hard time believing it myself.”

Ray confirmed, though his tone lacked its usual clinical certainty. He shook his head slowly.

”Incredible, I have escorted merchants through dozens of territories, my Lord. This does not look like a struggling countryside. This looks like a rapidly ascending domain with incredibly deep pockets. The infrastructure that is currently being developed is staggering. ”

Svane rumbled from his seat, his veteran eyes scanning the organized chaos.

Ray nodded silently, his analytical mind racing as the carriage navigated the crowded streets.

They approached what used to be the barren, empty outskirts of the town. Now, occupying several acres of that land, stood an enormous, fortified compound. It had essentially become the new, beating heart of Whisper Town, with all the new construction radiating outward from its walls.

Snapping proudly in the wind above the compound’s main gate was a massive, pristine flag: a golden scale balanced over a rising sun.

Ray recognized it instantly. It was the emblem of the Vance Merchant Group.

Intrigued, Ray tapped the roof of the carriage, signaling the driver to halt.

”Svane, wait here and guard the carriage. Rina, come with me. Let us see what is happening in our town.”

Stolen from NovelPhoenix, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Ray instructed, glancing up at the comical mountain of Rina’s shopping bags still strapped to the roof.

Stepping through the wide gates of the compound felt like stepping into a miniature version of Solhaven City’s Merchant District. It was a self-contained commercial hub. Numerous stalls and small shops were open and operating, buzzing with the haggling and laughter of a vibrant local economy.

Ray and Rina bypassed the smaller stalls and approached the largest building in the center of the compound. Ray expected to walk into a high-end retail shop. Instead, he found himself standing at the entrance of a massive, meticulously organized buying-and-sorting warehouse.

Ray stood near the entrance, silently observing the operations. The warehouse wasn’t selling; it was buying. And they were buying almost everything.

He watched attendants weigh and purchase bulk agricultural yields, carefully inspect and price hunted beast skins, and catalog harvested monster parts. He even saw an appraiser carefully evaluating a cart full of mysterious blocks of ancient masonry.

What truly surprised Ray was the absolute professionalism of the Vance Merchant Group employees. At one counter, a hardened, scarred hunter was loudly negotiating the price of a pristine drake pelt. At the very next counter, a young farm child, barely ten years old, was nervously offering a small burlap sack of Whisper Root which is an agricultural specialty product that can only be grown at Whispering Hills. The Vance Merchant Group attendants treated both individuals with the exact same level of professional courtesy, fairly appraising the goods and handing over coins without a hint of condescension or exploitation.

Ray closed his eyes for a moment, he initiated Partial Immersion and activated the Eccentric Scholar’s ‘High-Speed Reading & Memorization’ and ‘Deductive Reasoning’ skills. He did some quick mental math and cross referenced it with the data he has with the average prices of such goods. When his eyes snapped open, a genuine smile spread across his face.

They are buying at roughly ten percent above standard market price.

Ray realized.

It was a very generous move for economic stimulation. By providing the locals with a reliable, highly profitable, and respectful place to sell their goods, the Vances Merchant Group were injecting massive amounts of wealth directly into the domain’s lower and working classes. This was why the town was booming. The people finally had money to build, spend, and thrive.

Seeing that the warehouse was far too busy for a casual chat with the manager, Ray moved on.

Adjacent to the warehouse was a large, fortified barracks, also bearing the Vance Family flag. Ray noted the heavily armed mercenaries stationed at the gates, recognizing their uniforms. They were the same guards who had manned the highly professional security checkpoint when the carriage first entered the town limits. They were patrolling the streets, keeping the booming town perfectly safe.

Ray initiated Concurrent Partial Immersion and activated The Grizzled Commander’s Commander’s ’Commander’s Eye’ skill, his gaze sweeping over the mercenaries lounging near the barracks.

He expected to see standard, run-of-the-mill hired swords, cheap thugs meant to intimidate petty thieves. Instead, the skill fed him a stream of impressive data. Their levels were high, their gear was well maintained, and their aura discipline was incredibly tight. These were high-tier, veteran mercenaries, the kind that cost a fortune to keep on a permanent retainer.

Ray let the Concurrent Partial Immersion fade, his brow furrowing in thought.

He was amazed that the Vance Family was willing to afford such an elite private army just to secure a countryside town. Between the premium buying prices at the warehouse and the high tier security force, the Vances were bleeding gold into the Greywood Domain. How were they turning a profit?

As he stared at the golden scales on the flag, Ray’s mind drifted back to the Academy, recalling a specific conversation he had in the Grand Hall when he first met Eliza’s parents.

(Flashback)

The atmosphere in the Academy’s Grand Hall was less like a school exam and more like a gladiatorial festival. The spectator stands, usually empty, were packed to capacity. Nobles in house colors sat in reserved boxes, while wealthy merchants and alumni crowded the lower tiers. The air smelled of roasted nuts, perfumes, and anxiety.

Ray scanned the floor, utilizing the Gritty Detective’s ‘Observation’ Skill. He spotted them near the prep area entrance.

Eliza stood with Cassian, but they weren’t alone. A middle-aged couple stood with them, radiating an aura of wealth that was distinct from the old nobility. The man wore silks that were expensive but practical, cut for movement rather than display. His eyes were sharp, constantly assessing the value of everything he looked at. The woman beside him was elegant, her gaze warm but observant.

Ray approached, bowing respectfully.

“Eliza, senior Cassian.”

Eliza turned, looking relieved.

“Ray! You made it. Ray, these are my parents. Vailes and Esha Vance.”

She gestured to the couple.

Ray turned to Vailes Vance, executing a perfect, respectful bow.

“Lord Vance. Lady Vance. It is an honor. I owe your house a debt of gratitude for your assistance in my family’s… restructuring.”

Vailes looked at Ray, his sharp eyes narrowing as he assessed the twelve-year-old boy. He didn’t see a child; he saw the entity that had navigated a contract dispute with the Argent Hand.

“The pleasure is mine, Lord Croft,”

Vailes said, his voice smooth and rich. He extended a hand, shaking Ray’s not as an adult to a child, but as one businessman to another.

“My daughter told me of the… creativity required for that transaction. Impressive work. Most lords would have tried to use a sword; you used a ledger. I respect that. Furthermore, you owe us no gratitude. In fact, I should be thanking you. That little restructuring of yours has benefitted our Vance Merchant Group greatly!”

Ray blinked, his polite smile faltering for a fraction of a second.

Benefitted greatly?

Ray wondered.

“Benefited, my lord? I’m afraid I don’t quite follow. Greywood’s current infrastructure is currently quite… limited.”

Ray asked, his mind racing to catch up as he gently pressed for more information.

Vailes chuckled, his eyes twinkling with the guarded secrecy of a master merchant making a grand play. He waved a hand dismissively.

“A diamond in the rough, Lord Croft. But let us not talk business today. We will have plenty of time to do that in the future. Today, we are here for family and new friends.”

Esha Vance stepped forward, beaming.

“Exactly! And to think, you’re the one leading our Eliza into battle! We were so proud when we heard she registered. The first mage in the Vance line!”

Eliza’s face turned a brilliant shade of crimson.

“Mother, please. We’re trying to maintain a professional reputation here.”

“Nonsense! Wealth we have in abundance, darling. But magic? That’s a legacy money can’t buy.”

Esha laughed, patting Eliza’s cheek.

(End of Flashback)

Ray blinked, pulling himself out of the memory. Standing in the bustling center of the compound, Vailes Vance’s words finally echoed with tangible weight.

Benefitted greatly.
