The Legendary Method Actor

The quiet clinking of porcelain broke the silence.

Rina gently set a steaming cup of tea and a small, silver plate of assorted pastries on the desk, carefully avoiding the stacks of paper. She had scavenged the remnants of the drawing room’s hospitality spread.

”You cannot solve this if you collapse, young master…Please eat.”

Rina said quietly, offering a small, encouraging smile.

Ray looked up at her, the manic energy of the Eccentric Scholar fading. He offered a tired nod of thanks, picking up one of the small, fruit-filled pastries. He took a bite, washing it down with a sip of the hot, spiced tea.

The moment the food hit his stomach, the Crimson Weaver’s passive skill, ’Neural Gastronomy’, flared to life.

It was an incredible, physiological shift. The mundane calories and sugars of the pastry were instantly converted into a rush of pure, cooling energy. It surged up his spine and washed over his exhausted brain like ice water over a burn. The throbbing migraine dissolved into nothingness. The crushing weight of his stress fractured and evaporated, leaving behind a crystal-clear mental acuity.

Ray let out a deep, shuddering breath, his shoulders dropping as the tension left his body. He looked at Rina, a wave of gratitude washing over him. Once again, in her quiet, unassuming way, she had unwittingly saved him from burning out.

”Thank you, Rina. I needed that more than you know.”

Ray said, his voice steady and clear.

”I am glad I could help, young master.”

She replied, stepping back.

In the Ambient Presence of Ray’s mind, the Gritty Detective stepped forward, pointing at the one variable they had left completely untouched.

Detective: ”Hannah. The junior staffer who informed Lady Jane of the murder. She is the only missing piece.”

Conman: ”Gino said she vanished like smoke. She likely fled the estate before the lockdown.”

Detective: ”No. Think about it. Master Alvon established the perimeter within minutes. A terrified, low-ranking maid doesn’t have the resources to slip past the guards. She didn’t leave. My gut tells me she is still inside the manor.”

Ray stood up from the desk.

”Rina, I need to do something drastic. I am going to use a tracking method to find Hannah. Do not be alarmed by what you see, especially my eyes. Understand?”

Rina blinked, curious but entirely trusting. She gave a firm nod.

”I understand.”

Ray stepped out from behind the desk and looked down at his shadow.

Nox, I need your help again,

Ray mentally called out as the shadow rippled like a disturbed pond. The vantablack darkness peeled itself off the floor, rising into the physical world. In the span of a heartbeat. The Void-Malkin materialized onto the desk, a sleek, feline silhouette composed entirely of void that seemed to drink the ambient light of the room. It had no defined edges, his form blurring into the air like dark smoke. The only color on it were its eyes: two swirling, luminescent pools of golden color.

Rina was happy to see a friend and her training partner for the past many weeks, she wanted to pet Nox but she knew that it was not the time.

Nox ignored her, turning his swirling golden eyes toward Ray. A high-energy, sassy voice echoed directly into Ray’s mind.

Summoned twice in one night? You spoil me, master. What are we hunting?’

Nox asked mentally.

A girl, She is missing. Do not bother with the main halls or the grand rooms. I need you to scout the in-betweens. The crawlspaces, the servant passages, the hollow walls. Can you do that?

Ray projected back, feeding the familiar the mental image and physical description of Hannah in her junior maid uniform.

Nox stretched his front paws, his vantablack claws sinking soundlessly into the wood of the desk.

Walls are just suggestions to me, master. Let’s do this.

Ray crouched slightly, bringing himself to eye level with the void-malkin.

Ray initiated the familiar ‘Share Senses’ skill.

Ray’s physical body reacted instantly. His right eye violently shifted. The golden flecks in his iris exploded outward, flooding the sclera until his entire right eye mirrored the pure, pupil-less luminescence of the shadow-cat.

Rina stared, her breath catching in her throat as she witnessed the eerie, magical transformation her Lord had warned her about.

Ray’s perception fractured. Through his left eye, he saw the drawing room, Rina, and the desk. But through his right eye, his vision plunged into a stark, high-contrast grayscale. The acoustics in his right ear amplified dramatically, picking up the scratching of mice in the floorboards and the distant hum of the manor’s plumbing.

Through the link, Ray watched as Nox leaped off the desk. The cat didn’t land on the floor. Instead, as he hit the patterned wallpaper, Nox flattened himself into a two-dimensional shade and simply slid through the solid oak paneling.

Ray was suddenly plunged into the dark, hidden architecture of House Starr.

The montage of the shadow hunt was dizzying. Through Nox’s grayscale vision, Ray slithered through narrow, suffocating air vents choked with decades of dust. He saw that Nox dropped silently down the soot-stained interiors of massive chimney flues. He phased through thick stone floors, running along the structural beams of the servant wings, moving at a terrifying, fluid speed through areas no human could ever access.

The Void-Malkin was a master of his element. He ignored the scuttling rats and the groaning pipes, his senses sweeping the hidden voids of the massive estate.

Ten minutes passed. Then twenty.

Suddenly, high in the forgotten arteries of the manor, tucked tightly between the walls of the sprawling guest wing, Nox stopped dead.

Ray’s breath hitched in his chest.

Nox had phased into an abandoned secret passageway, a narrow, dust-choked corridor hidden behind the opulent mahogany paneling. It was a relic of the estate’s older architecture, a servant’s path that hadn’t seen a human footprint in decades.

And yet, someone was there.

Through the stark grayscale vision of the familiar, Ray saw a crumpled form lying motionless on the dusty floorboards. The grayscale lack of color made it impossible to see blood, but the distinct, ruffled apron and conservative cut of a House Starr junior maid uniform were unmistakable. It was Hannah.

She was completely still. Because the Shared Senses link only provided raw optical and auditory data, Ray could not tell if she was alive or not. He could not hear a heartbeat over the faint creaking of the manor’s settling timber. He had absolutely no way of knowing if she was dead, unconscious, or bleeding out in the dark.

Hold your position, Nox. I am coming.

Ray mentally commanded as he severed the link immediately.

The grayscale feed snapped shut. The luminescent gold faded rapidly from Ray’s right eye, returning it to its normal, human hue. He shot up from the desk, the chair clattering backward against the floor.

”Follow me.”

Ray ordered, his voice had a lethal edge of a Commander.

Rina didn’t ask questions. She simply nodded, falling into step right behind him.

Ray opened the doors, bursting out into the main corridor.

Headmaster Andrade, Master Alvon, Svane, and Sergeant Thomas were waiting at the hallway, quietly discussing the logistics of the lockdown. The moment the doors banged open, they stopped.

They saw Ray’s face.

The young Lord wasn’t walking like an aristocrat anymore. He was moving with intense, predatory urgency, his eyes fixed on a destination only he knew.

Without needing a single word of explanation, the four reacted immediately to the undeniable gravity of the boy’s demeanor. They made a move in perfect unison. Weapons were subconsciously adjusted. Postures shifted from waiting to combat.

Like a strike team falling in behind their commander, Headmaster Andrade, Master Alvon, and the two Aegis warriors fell into formation behind the young Lord, rushing headlong through the winding halls of the estate.

The group moved rapidly through the winding halls, leaving the music and the panic of the ballroom far behind. Ray navigated the labyrinthine estate with impossible certainty, taking sharp turns down increasingly dusty and dimly lit corridors in the oldest section of the guest wing.

Finally, Ray skidded to a halt. The corridor terminated abruptly at a solid, ornate wood-paneled wall. A dead end.

Sergeant Thomas frowned, his hand instinctively resting on the pommel of his sword. Master Alvon let out a harsh breath, the physical exertion of the sprint momentarily overriding his caution.

”A dead end, Novice Croft? Did you get lost or…”

Alvon sneered, his impatience flaring.

Before he could finish his insult, Ray stepped forward. He didn’t search the molding for a hidden lever, nor did he feel along the panels for a secret latch. Instead, he dropped his center of gravity, his posture shifting instantly into a stance radiating focused, explosive power.

Svane’s breath caught in his throat. His eyes went wide, locking onto Ray’s right hand.

Ray’s fist was wreathed not in the crackling blue of standard mana, but in a dense, shimmering field of pure kinetic Aether. The sheer density of the energy distorted the air around it, humming with a terrifying, contained violence.

Svane’s heart hammered against his ribs. The veteran warrior’s mind flashed back to the Spire of Sages break-in the previous year. He had seen this exact stance. This impossible manifestation of energy before. It was the precise move the legendary, terrifying operative known as ’K’ had used to shatter the master-level barrier.

How is he using K’s technique?

Svane thought, a cold sweat breaking out on the back of his neck.

Then, a chilling realization struck the veteran. His mind jumped back to a spar Ray had with Viktor Garrick months prior, where Ray had suddenly executed a ’Tactical Shift’, a standard Silver Aegis ability that allowed for a thirty-foot teleport, the ultimate tool for mobility. Ray had managed to replicate the complex Aegis skill although it was not perfect yet but Svane remembered that Ray only saw him perform the skill a mere two times. The raw, monstrous aptitude to mimic it at all was undeniable.

K had struck that study barrier two, maybe three times during the entire siege.

By the Founders! He didn’t learn it from her. He copied it just by watching.

Svane swallowed hard, staring at the young Lord’s back.

Beside the warrior, Master Alvon’s eyes widened as his own memories locked onto a completely different phantom. He stared at the terrifying density of the energy gathering around Ray’s fist. He had fought the legendary exile from Valoria Master Hadrick decades ago, and the memory of that beating was permanently etched into his bones.

While the shimmering visual of this energy was different from what he’d know for a standard aura technique, the underlying principle, forcing an overwhelming, localized pressure into a single point of absolute destruction, was functionally identical to Master Hadrick’s most devastating fist art.

So the old monster really did train him. If anything... the boy’s version looks even more concentrated and lethal.

Alvon thought, the last of his previous doubts completely evaporating. He watched the space around Ray’s fist physically distort.

Ray didn’t hesitate. He drove his Aether-wreathed fist directly into the center of the solid wall.

The impact was deafening. The opulent wood paneling and the ancient plaster behind it exploded inward with a violent crack, showering the narrow space with jagged splinters and a thick cloud of choking white dust. The heavy kinetic force blew a massive hole straight through the false wall, revealing the pitch-black, cobweb-choked expanse of the abandoned secret passageway.

As the dust billowed outward, coughing echoed from Alvon and Thomas, both men throwing their arms up to shield their faces from the debris.

In the chaotic haze, a flat, two-dimensional blot of vantablack darkness slithered seamlessly over the rubble and merged directly into the shadow cast by Ray’s boots.

Took you long enough, master. My job here is done. I’m taking a nap.

Nox’s sassy voice echoed in Ray’s mind, followed by the distinct mental impression of the shadow-cat curling into a tight ball and closing its glowing eyes.

Ray offered a silent pulse of gratitude down their bond. He stepped through the jagged hole in the wall, waving the settling dust away from his face.

Behind him, Headmaster Andrade stepped up to the breach. With a flick of her wrist, she conjured a floating sphere of illuminating mana, casting a harsh, brilliant white light down the narrow, forgotten corridor.

A dozen paces away, lying crumpled on the dusty floorboards, was the motionless body with a junior maid uniform.
