Ray pulled up the Custodian Crest, he saw it was a secure call from Headmaster Andrade.

Ray tapped the crest, activating it and establishing the secure link.

”Novice Croft, I trust you are recovering from the events of last week.”

Headmaster Andrade’s voice echoed in the room, it was crisp and entirely devoid of pleasantries.

”I am, Headmaster. To what do I owe this call, headmaster?”

Ray replied quietly, sitting on the edge of his bed.

”The Academy Security Department has finished their interrogation of Bastian Sterling. With Zone of Truth we were able to get the full picture. The narrative is entirely cohesive, and it paints a rather grim picture of our internal security.”

”Let me guess… he wasn’t acting alone in the Night Whisper trade.”

Ray said.

”Astute. No, he was not. Bastian Sterling was merely a scout. His job was to identify wealthy, vulnerable nobles. The actual supplier of the ’Night Whisper’ was an embedded agent of the Argent Hand in the academy.”

Andrade confirmed.

The Argent Hand again.

Ray thought as his eyes narrowed.

”During the purge the academy did a few months ago, we unknowingly arrested and expelled Bastian’s partner. This left a massive stockpile of still unsold ‘Night Whisper’ that was in their meeting spot which was hidden in one of the old buildings in the abandoned part of the academy demi plane. Driven by need for funds for his study and the current financial difficulties of his House, Bastian decided to take over the distribution himself.”

Andrade stated.

”And Warren caught the trail.”

Ray guessed.

”Precisely. Warren Ramada was tracking massive, unaccounted purchases of Moonpetal Flowers on the black market. This led him to the expelled Argent Hand agent, which subsequently led him to Bastian. The confrontation we witnessed on the projection of the wine cellar before his death was Warren offering a foolish degree of mercy.”

”What about the timeline of the murder? Why go after the junior maid?”

Ray asked.

”Premeditation and arrogance, Sterling arrived at the manor hours before the gala. He chanced upon Hannah in an isolated corridor. He drugged her with a heavy sedative, extracted the manor’s architectural information and secret routes, and then strangled her. He dumped her body in the abandoned passageway where we found her body.”

Andrade’s voice darkened.

”He needed her face.”

Ray said as he processed the grim logistics.

”He needed an alibi.”

Andrade corrected.

“Later he slipped into the cellar, poisoned Ramada, and mutilated the corpse; he initially intended to simply walk away. But as he was leaving, he saw your attendant, Rina, approaching the stairs to the wine cellar. Seeing an opportunity, he drank the polymorph elixir, assumed Hannah’s form, and sprinted to Lady Jane to ’report’ the attack.”

Andrade continued.

”Ensuring Rina would be found standing over the corpse. If he had the means to escape, why did he stay in the ballroom during the lockdown?”

Ray finished, the cold calculation of the crime settling in.

”Pure, unadulterated arrogance. He believed he had committed the perfect crime. He stayed to watch the academy security arrest a common servant, completely confident that his aristocratic blood and flawless alibi would shield him from scrutiny.

Andrade scoffed.

“He didn’t account for me, a 1st-Circle Novice to head the investigation.”

Ray responded.

”Indeed, he did not. The Argent Hand’s ‘Night Whisper’ stockpile has been seized, and Sterling will face the tribunal. Your actions have purged a remnant but deep rot from this Academy, Ray. Well done.”

Andrade said, a hint of genuine approval bleeding through the magical link.

“Thank you, headmaster, for updating me about Bastian.”

Ray said as he bowed to the headmaster.

“It’s the least I can do Novice Croft. I have other matters to take care of, Andrade out.”

The holographic image of the headmaster dissipated as the connection was severed, leaving Ray alone in the quiet of his room.

Three Days Later, the morning sun over the Solhaven Academy demi-plane was unusually pale, casting a muted, gray light through the tall windows of Ray’s suite. The atmosphere inside the room was heavy, completely stripped of its usual bustling, academic energy.

Ray stood perfectly still in the center of his dressing room. He was fully cooperating, remaining silent and compliant as Rina meticulously adjusted the fit of his attire. He was dressed in a razor-sharp black suit, the traditional mourning garb of the nobility. There were no crests, no shimmering fabrics, only the stark, uncompromising weight of black wool and silk.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Rina stood before him, her hands trembling slightly as she smoothed the lapels of his jacket. She, too, wore an all dress. Her usual crisp maid’s uniform had been replaced by a high-collared, long-sleeved mourning dress. Her eyes were red-rimmed, carrying the exhaustion of sleepless nights.

”There, young master. You are ready.”

Rina whispered, her voice fragile. She stepped back, keeping her eyes cast downward.

”Thank you, Rina.”

Ray said softly, entirely dropping his clinical distance. He recognized the grief radiating from her.

They walked out of the suite in silence. Waiting for them in the corridor was Svane. The towering Gold Aegis had foregone his usual gleaming armor. Instead, he wore a black overcoat that draped over his broad shoulders like a storm cloud. He gave Ray a solemn nod and led the way down to the courtyard.

A black lacquered carriage drawn by two dark-maned equines waited for them on the cobblestones.

The ride through the Academy grounds was quiet. The rhythmic clop of the horses’ hooves against the stone was the only sound. Sitting across from him, Rina kept her hands tightly clasped in her lap, her gaze fixed on the floorboards of the carriage.

Ray studied her for a long moment.

”Are you alright, Rina?”

Rina flinched slightly at the question. She looked up, forcing a brave, fragile smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

”I am okay, young master. Just... remembering.”

Ray didn’t push her. He simply nodded, letting the quiet hum of the carriage wheels carry them forward.

When the carriage finally rolled to a halt, the doors were opened by an attendant. Ray stepped out, offering a hand to help Rina down.

They had arrived at the academy ‘Arcane Necropolis,’ the magically preserved cemetery located at the deepest edge of the academy’s demi-plane. It was a sprawling, ancient expanse of weeping willows, white marble mausoleums, and perfectly manicured frost-grass. A thick, ambient mist clung to the ground, swirling around the ankles of the attendees.

As they walked down the gravel path, Ray took note of the crowd gathering beneath a massive canopy of silver-leaf trees. Warren Ramada had been a head butler, a servant by title, yet the sheer number of people in attendance spoke volumes of the respect he commanded.

Dozens of junior staffers from various noble houses stood in the back rows, many weeping openly. Closer to the front stood the elite of the Academy. Ray spotted Headmaster Andrade, dressed in a high-collared black gown, standing with perfect, rigid posture. Beside her was Master Alvon, looking strangely diminished without his heavy plate mail, clad instead in a dark military tunic. Several other high-ranking professors and nobles were also in the crowd.

At the very front, closest to the open earth, stood the Starr family.

Lady Jane Starr was heavily veiled, supported on either side by attendants as she wept softly into a black lace handkerchief. Beside her stood Dylan, Francesca, and Krystle. They wore mourning black, but instead of holding flowers, they held their instruments. Dylan grasped a pair of dark, unpolished drumsticks. Francesca held a beautiful, somber acoustic guitar, a far cry from her aggressive Arcane-Lute. Krystle held a slender ‘Aero-Clavier,’ a portable, breath-powered keyboard carved from dark mourn-wood.

An Academy cleric finished chanting the final rites of passage, his voice echoing softly through the misty graveyard. Slowly, magically guided by levitation spells, the heavy mahogany casket began its descent into the earth.

As the wood slipped below the surface, the Starr siblings stepped forward to the edge of the grave.

There was no grand announcement. Krystle simply closed her eyes and lifted the slender Aero-Clavier to her lips. She breathed a slow, steady stream of air into the silver mouthpiece while her hyper-dense fingers pressed the dark wooden keys. It produced a low, resonant, haunting hum. It was a frequency felt in the chest more than heard, a steady, comforting rhythm that mimicked a slow, peaceful heartbeat.

Over this deep, magical resonance, Francesca softly plucked the strings of her acoustic guitar, weaving a melancholic, beautiful melody through the mist.

Dylan stepped up to stand where they had been placed by the grave. He looked down at the casket, his eyes shining with unshed tears, and began to sing.
