The Legendary Method Actor

Ray didn’t bother with a warm-up. He pushed off his back foot and closed the distance instantly.

Drawing purely on his raw physicality, Ray threw a heavy punch aimed directly at Svane’s chest.

Svane casually brought his forearm up to parry the blow, expecting the modest strength of a thirteen-year-old noble.

CRACK!

The impact echoed sharply through the clearing. Svane’s eyes widened in genuine shock as the kinetic force behind Ray’s fist slammed into his guard. The Gold Aegis’s actually took a couple steps backward. The sheer physical density and raw, explosive power contained within Ray’s lean frame were absolutely monstrous.

Recognizing that this was not a standard sparring match, Svane’s demeanor instantly shifted. The polite, restrained bodyguard vanished, replaced by the hardened, veteran soldier who had survived many battles across the kingdom.

Svane retaliated. His massive fist blurred through the air.

Ray barely managed to duck under the sweeping hook, the wind from the strike ruffling his hair. Ray countered with a low sweep, but Svane’s leg felt like it was made of solid iron. The vanguard pivoted, unleashing a rapid, devastating combination of strikes that forced Ray to rapidly retreat.

As the exchange intensified, Svane began to slip. The familiar rhythm of heavy combat triggered his deeply ingrained instincts. He entered his ‘battle trance,’ a hyper-focused, predatory state he used to survive against high-tier beasts. His eyes glazed over slightly, his breathing synced with his strikes, and his attacks became blisteringly fast and ruthlessly efficient.

Ray blocked a heavy palm strike, the sheer force sending a painful shockwave up his arm.

He’s moving too fast. The experience gap is too wide.

Ray analyzed, his breathing has started to grow ragged as he barely evaded a knee strike that would have shattered his ribs.

”Alright, Svane, that’s enough for today!”

Ray called out, raising his hands to signal the end of the spar.

But Svane didn’t stop. Lost in the adrenaline and the rhythmic flow of the battle trance, the vanguard didn’t even register Ray’s words. He stepped in, his massive arm rearing back for a devastating, mana-infused haymaker that Ray knew he couldn’t block.

Ray only had a moment to act.

System. Partial Immersion: The Grizzled Commander!

Ray’s posture instantly straightened, his presence radiating an overwhelming, authoritative weight. He drew a small amount of Aether from his core, pushing the primordial energy directly into his vocal cords.

”STAND DOWN!”

Ray unleashed The General’s Cadence.

The Aether-infused command erupted from Ray’s mouth, not as mere sound, but as a dense, invisible shockwave of absolute authority. The mental cleanse slammed into Svane.

The vanguard froze mid-swing, the battle trance shattering like fragile glass. Svane blinked rapidly, the primal aggression bleeding out of his eyes, replaced instantly by profound horror as he realized he had nearly struck his lord with full force.

Svane immediately dropped to one knee, bowing his head deeply.

”My Lord... I deeply apologize. I lost myself in the rhythm of the spar. I am entirely at fault.”

Ray let out a long breath, allowing the Commander’s persona to fade as he rubbed his aching forearms.

”Rise, Svane. I told you not to hold back. But clearly, I still have a long way to go before I can match a veteran’s instincts.”

Svane stood up, looking at Ray with a newfound, profound respect.

”Your combat instincts are correct, you only lack experience, my Lord. But your raw physical power... I have never seen someone of your age possess such terrifying strength. You hit like a scaled drake.”

Ray smirked, grabbing a towel from the carriage.

”I will work on the lack of experience then.”

By the eleventh day of their journey, the carriage crossed into Zabor, a small, dusty southern territory. According to regional reports, the area had recently been subjected to a bloody turf war between two rival mercenary factions. The victors, a ruthless company calling themselves the ‘Reckless Blades,’ now heavily controlled the main roads.

As the carriage rumbled around a bend in the road, the driver suddenly pulled hard on the reins, bringing the horses to a tense halt.

Blocking the path ahead were a dozen rough-looking mercenaries. They wore mismatched, blood-stained leather armor and carried axes and broadswords.

The mercenary captain, a scarred man with a missing eye, stepped forward, a greedy grin splitting his face. He looked at the carriage. From the outside, the vehicle was a comical sight. Thanks to Rina’s massive shopping spree in the capital, the carriage was overflowing. Frost-silk garment bags hung from the side lanterns, boxes were strapped three tiers high on the roof rack, and the heavy suspension groaned under the sheer volume of goods.

To the Reckless Blades, it didn’t look like a typical travel carriage. It looked like a fat, over-encumbered, poorly-defended merchant caravan ripe for the picking.

”Road’s closed, merchant! Toll for safe passage through Zabor is everything strapped to the roof of that wagon!”

The captain barked, resting his rusted sword on his shoulder.

Inside the cabin, Rina’s eyes narrowed to dangerous slits. The moment the thugs threatened the gifts she had painstakingly picked out for her family, her cheerful demeanor vanished, replaced by a cold, protective fury.

Hearing the captain’s arrogant demand, Ray felt a sudden, distinct wave of déjà vu. His mind flashed back to their journey to the Iron Wake Domain to rescue Kaelen. They had been stopped on the road by a band of highwaymen in an almost identical manner. Back then, Ray and Rina had stepped out and fought the bandits off together, relying heavily on coordinated teamwork to overwhelm and defeat the bandits..

Ray glanced at Rina, noting the fierce, uncompromising glint in her eyes. She wasn’t the inexperienced attendant she had been during that ambush. She had trained relentlessly, survived the journey to Iron-Wake domain, the recent events in the Starr Manor, and refined her combat skills.

Let’s see just how far she has come.

Ray thought, making a split-second decision.

The carriage door swung open.

Svane stepped out first. The towering Gold Aegis hit the dirt, his massive frame clad in pristine, high-tier vanguard armor. The mercenaries immediately took a collective step back, their confident sneers faltering at the sight of the elite warrior.

But before Svane could draw his weapon, Ray stepped out smoothly behind him. He placed a calm hand on Svane’s broad chest plate.

”Do not worry about my vanguard, he will not intervene in this matter.”

Ray called out to the nervous mercenaries, his voice perfectly even.

”He won’t?”

The captain responded as he blinked, confused.

”No. ”You only have to deal with the owner of the items you want, my attendant.”

Ray said as he smiled faintly.

Rina hopped out of the carriage. She looked small and entirely unthreatening in her sturdy travel clothes, enveloped in a thick travel coat similar to Ray’s. The mercenaries looked at her, looked at each other, and erupted into cruel laughter.

”You’re sending the little attendant to fight us? Grab her, boys. We’ll take all the packages and the girl!”

The captain mocked, pointing his sword at her.

Three mercenaries rushed forward with lecherous grins.

They didn’t even see her move.

She utilized the Flowing Shadow Technique, the fast footwork Ray had bestowed upon her and relentlessly drilled into her muscle memory, Rina dropped her center of gravity. She surged forward, a blur of motion, moving less like a brawler and more like a silent phantom.

She slipped under a wildly swung axe. Relying entirely on precision, she planted her foot and drove a devastating, pinpoint elbow strike directly into the first mercenary’s solar plexus. The man folded like a cheap tavern chair, gasping for air.

Without pausing, she pivoted on her heel, dropping low to sweep the back of the second man’s knees. As he pitched forward, stripped of his balance, she met his descending jaw with a brutal, rising knee strike. The sharp crack echoed through the canyon as he spun violently into the dirt, unconscious before he even landed.

The third mercenary hesitated, terrified by her sudden speed. Rina darted into his guard, grabbed his wrist, and twisted it into a debilitating joint lock. Using leverage and his own momentum against him, she swept his legs out and slammed him face-first into the packed earth.

Three men down in less than ten seconds.

The laughter died instantly. The captain’s remaining eye widened in sheer terror.

”Well? Who else wants to touch my luggage?”

Rina demanded, cracking her knuckles, her eyes blazing with mama-bear fury.

Ten minutes later, the remaining Reckless Blades were groveling in the dirt, nursing broken noses, dislocated shoulders, and bruised ribs. Rina stood over them, barely winded, adjusting the cuffs of her travel coat with a satisfied huff.

The captain was on his knees, holding his bleeding face, staring at the ‘helpless looking girl’ like she was a demon from the abyss.

Ray calmly walked forward, stopping in front of the captain.

”We will not be paying your toll. However, since you have significantly delayed my journey and forced my attendant to exert herself, I believe compensation is in order.”

Ray stated simply.

At Ray’s nod, Rina happily walked down the line of groaning mercenaries, casually confiscating their coin pouches and tossing them into a small leather sack.

”Consider it an educational tax. Have a pleasant day.”

Ray offered the stunned captain.

The carriage journey continued without further incident. By the fourteenth day, the dry, dusty heat of the southern plains finally began to fade. The climate grew noticeably cooler, the air turning crisp and sharp.

Ray leaned against the carriage window, watching as the flat horizon began to rise into jagged, familiar mountain ridges. The sparse shrubbery was replaced by dense, towering evergreen forests that stretched for miles in every direction.

He cracked the window open, taking a deep breath of the cool, forest-scented air.

We are here.

Ray thought, a genuine sense of peace settling over his shoulders.

The carriage wheels rolled over the final stone marker. They had officially crossed the boundary. Ray Croft had finally returned to the Greywood Domain.
