The Conquerors Path

Chapter 1049: Chapter 1047- New Ways.

The maintenance tunnel descended deeper than I expected. The walls changed as we went from less natural coral to more worked stone, clearly carved by something other than time and currents.

The air got colder too, and there was this faint hum that I felt more than heard, vibrating through the water itself.

Elowen moved ahead of me, one hand trailing along the wall to keep her bearings. The darkness was almost complete except for the faint glow of her bloom spots, which cast these shifting shadows across everything. I could have lit the way myself, but we were trying to stay unnoticed. The fewer signs we left that someone had come through here, the better.

“The hum means the facility’s operational; when it’s dormant, you don’t feel anything. This means they’re running systems. Which means Vex is probably there, the apex protocol is being run.”

She whispered after maybe thirty minutes of descent.

“Is that good or bad?”

I asked quietly.

“It’s both, good because we know we’re in the right place. Bad because it means we’re running out of time.”

She said, not turning around. The tunnel finally levelled out, and the worked stone gave way to actual carved passages. These had markers on the walls, old symbols painted in something that still glowed faintly with residual power. Elowen studied them as we passed, nodding like she was reading a conversation in a language only she understood.

“Personnel routes. This used to be the maintenance staff access. Storage workers, equipment handlers, people who moved things without needing clearance from security.”

She said quietly. She paused at an intersection, considering our options.

“If anyone’s watching the main corridors, they wouldn’t be watching these. Too mundane. Too low-value.”

We took the left passage, and the hum got stronger. Not louder exactly, just more present. It was starting to make my skin itch, that feeling you get when you’re around something that’s not quite right on a fundamental level. Like standing too close to something powerful that doesn’t care about you.

After another stretch of passage, Elowen held up her hand, and we stopped. Ahead, there was a faint glow coming from around a corner, not the natural bioluminescence of the reef, but something artificial.

Something that pulsed with a rhythm that matched the hum.

She crouched down and moved forward slowly, and I did the same. When we reached the corner, I could see what was down there: a wide corridor with actual carved walls and a stone floor. There were sealed doors along the sides, all marked with the same symbols we’d been seeing. And at the far end, there was a junction with multiple passages branching off.

But what caught my attention was the guards.

Two of them were stationed about halfway down the corridor. They didn’t look like the mindless corrupted we’d been fighting. These were something else. Their forms were vaguely humanoid but twisted, like something had tried to force human shapes into something fundamentally not human.

Their skin had this dark sheen to it, and these glowing cracks were running across their bodies as the corruption had gotten into their very structure. They weren’t moving, just standing there like statues, but I could feel the power radiating off them. Dangerous power. Elowen pulled back and whispered directly into my ear, her voice barely audible.

“Enhanced corrupted. They’re new. Vex must have been upgrading the security.”

“Can we get past them?”

I asked.

“Not without a fight, and a fight here means bringing everyone in the facility down on us. We need another way.”She said.

We retreated back down the passage and found a small alcove where the stonework had cracked and created a narrow space. We squeezed into it, and Elowen pulled out one of the documents she’d grabbed from the archive. Even in the dim light, I could see her eyes moving across the lines, processing information.

“There, alternate access through the storage sector. It connects to the processing wing from the back. If we can get through there, we bypass the main corridors entirely.”

She said after a moment, pointing to a section.

“Is it guarded?”

I asked.

“No, It’s not guarded because nobody’s supposed to be in the storage sector except during shift changes. Because what they keep there is…”

She didn’t finish the sentence. She didn’t need to.

We backtracked and found the passage she was looking for. This one was smaller, narrower, and the walls had this faint residue on them that made me want to wash my hands. The whole thing felt wrong in a way that was hard to articulate. Like the stone itself had absorbed something it shouldn’t have.

“This is the specimen transport route; they move people through here. From storage to processing. The whole corridor is probably soaked with pain and fear at this point.”

Elowen said quietly as we moved through it. The passage opened up into a larger chamber, and we both froze. The storage sector was huge, carved out of what must have been a natural cavern that they’d expanded and adapted. And it was full.

Row after row of sealed chambers, carved into the walls like compartments. And behind the translucent coral that sealed them, there were people. Or things that used to be people. Some looked mostly normal, just asleep or unconscious. Others were partway through the corruption process; their skin darkened, their forms starting to twist, but not yet complete. A few were further along, barely recognisable as having once been human at all.

Elowen stood completely still, just staring at them. Her hands were shaking.

“How many?”

I asked quietly.

“Hundreds, maybe more than that. I count at least four hundred compartments, and some of them might be stacked.”

She said, her voice tight. She moved deeper into the storage sector, and I followed. She went to one of the compartments at random and looked at the marking on the outside. There was a name written there in faded characters, along with what looked like dates and stages of progression.

“They’re tracking them, every stage of transformation. They’re documenting the entire process.”

She said. She moved to another compartment, then another. Her jaw was clenched tight, and I could see the bloom spots on her shoulders starting to glow brighter, a sign that she was using energy just to keep herself under control.

“I will stop this; we have to destroy this place,”

She said finally, her voice carrying an edge.

“We have to get information first; we need to know who’s giving the orders. We need to go higher than Vex.”

I said. She looked at me, and there was something in her eyes that was frightening.

“I know, we do this smart. We find the command centre. We access their systems. We get the names and the authorisation chains. Then we burn this whole place to the ground.”

She said quietly. We moved through the storage sector more carefully now, staying out of sight of any potential observation systems. Elowen was looking for a specific type of corridor, something she kept referencing from the documents she’d studied. When she finally found it, it was marked with symbols that indicated administrative access.

This passage was different from the others. Cleaner. Better maintained. It sloped upward, which meant we were moving toward a different level of the facility. The hum was louder here too, almost overwhelming. Whatever the Apex Protocol actually was, its power was being channelled through this part of the facility.

“The command centre should be at the top level, where they can oversee everything. Where they keep the most important records.”

Elowen said as we climbed.

“Will Vex be there?”

I asked.

“Probably not right now, command staff usually works in cycles. Day shift, night shift, rotation schedules. If we’re lucky, this is a skeleton crew time.”

She said.

“And if we’re not lucky?”

I asked.

“Then we hope your space distortion tricks are as good as you’ve been making them out to be,”

She said flatly. The passage opened into a wider space, and we could see actual doors now. Real constructed doors, not just carved passages. They had mechanisms on them, locking systems that would require keys or codes to open. Elowen examined one carefully, running her fingers along the edges.

“This is guard-level security; they don’t want just anyone wandering in here.”She said.

“Can you open it?”

I asked. She pulled out a thin piece of worked coral from her satchel, something she’d apparently been carrying for a very long time based on the wear on it. She worked the edge into the mechanism, applying pressure in specific directions. After a long moment, there was a soft click, and the door swung inward.

Beyond it was a corridor with actual lighting, proper luminescent panels built into the walls, casting everything in a cold, artificial light. And at the end of that corridor, there was another door. This one was larger, more fortified. And above it was a symbol.

The same seal from the documents. Three concentric circles with a slash through the middle.

“That’s it, that’s the command centre. Everything we need should be in there.”

Elowen said quietly. We moved toward it carefully, and I could hear something now voices, filtered through the stone and water but definitely there. People talking. Working. Managing whatever operation was happening in this facility.

Elowen paused at the entrance to the command centre and looked back at me. In the artificial light, I could see exactly how tired she was. How much this was costing her, moving through this place, seeing what she’d helped create.

“Whatever happens from here-“

She said quietly,

“We do it together.”

I said. She nodded once, then turned back to the door. She was reaching for the mechanism when the door suddenly swung inward on its own. And we were face to face with someone I recognised from Elowen’s descriptions, even though I’d never seen her before.

Vex.

She was tall, with sharp features and dark eyes that had this predatory intelligence in them. She was wearing something that looked like a commander’s attire, all functional lines and subtle power symbols. And she was smiling like she’d been expecting us.

“Well, well, look who we have here….”

She said, her voice smooth and controlled.
