The Conquerors Path

Chapter 1045: Chapter 1043- Drunken Bonding and Rest

The underbelly of the city felt like a different world compared to the glowing spires and bustling markets above. Narrow coral tunnels twisted through ancient reef formations, lit only by faint dark moss and the occasional floating jellyfish lantern. The water here was warmer, thicker with the scent of fermented kelp. We moved carefully, sticking to the shadows as distant sounds of patrols echoed through the passages, the heavy strokes of shark guards and the sharper calls of merman enforcers searching for the ‘cheating woman and her dramatic merman accomplice.’

Elowen led the way, her cloak pulled tight around her shoulders, bloom spots dimmed to avoid drawing attention. I stayed close behind her, my disguised merman form blending seamlessly with the dim environment. The fight in the market square had left her breathing harder than she wanted to admit, small cuts and bruises stinging in the salty water, but the adrenaline was fading into a bone-deep exhaustion.

“I need a place to rest.”

Elowen muttered, her voice low and tired.

“Somewhere neutral. No questions asked.”

I nodded, scanning the tunnels ahead.

“I know a spot. Follow me, Big Sis.”

She shot me a glare over her shoulder, but there was less heat in it now.

“I know a place too, but I will let the one who is testing me and guiding me take the lead on this one.”

“Sure, whatever you say~”

I teased, earning a reluctant huff of laughter from her. We turned down a narrower passage, the walls covered in thick, glowing kelp that brushed against our skin like soft curtains. I used a subtle space distortion to mask our presence, guiding us toward a hidden tavern I had scouted earlier through my influence, a neutral establishment known among the shadows as a haven for those who wanted to disappear for a while.

The tavern was tucked behind a massive, living coral archway disguised as a natural reef. A faint, warm glow spilt out from within, carrying the rich scent of fermented deep-sea nectars and roasted glowfish. A small sign carved into the coral read “The Blooming Shell” in elegant script. Neutral territory run by a retired don who didn’t care who you were as long as you paid and didn’t start trouble inside.

We pushed through the kelp curtain entrance. The interior was surprisingly cosy for an underwater hideout. The main room was a wide, dome-shaped chamber with walls covered in living coral shelves holding bottles of various glowing liquors. Soft lanterns hung from the ceiling like floating stars, casting a gentle golden-teal light over everything. Round tables made from giant clam shells were scattered around, occupied by a mix of quiet patrons, a few octopus merchants nursing drinks, a pair of penguin crabs arguing over a dice game in the corner, and a lone mermaid staring into her cup like it held all the answers to life.

The owner, an older merman woman with silver-streaked hair and kind but sharp amber eyes, glanced at us as we entered. She took in Elowen’s cloak and my disguised form without comment, simply nodding toward a secluded booth in the back corner.

“Here you go, a quiet table. Strongest kelp wine on the house for new faces who don’t cause problems.”

I gave her a nod and guided Elowen to the booth. The seats were soft, padded with compressed seaweed that moulded comfortably around us. The moment we sat down, Elowen let out a long, exhausted sigh, slumping against the curved coral wall. Her bloom spots were still faintly glowing from the earlier fight, casting delicate patterns across her bronze skin.

“Drink.”

I said gently, signalling the owner. A server brought over two large shells filled with the tavern’s signature fermented kelp wine, a deep amber liquid that shimmered with tiny floating motes of colour. It smelled rich, sweet, and potent.

“For recovery, Big Sis. You earned it after that mess back there.”

Elowen took the shell without protest, downing half of it in one long pull. The alcohol hit her fast, bringing a warm flush to her cheeks and making her bloom spots open slightly, releasing that sweet, floral nectar scent into the air around us. She leaned back, eyes half-lidded as the tension in her shoulders slowly melted away.

“You’re too good at this.”

She muttered, taking another sip.

“Arranging safe spots, drinks, distractions… It’s suspicious.”

I chuckled, sipping my own wine slowly.

“Just trying to take care of my Big Sis. Someone has to make sure you don’t pass out in a random alley after a fight. That would be bad for my reputation as the world’s best little brother.”

She snorted, the sound undignified and surprisingly endearing. The wine was working its magic, loosening her tongue as the tavern’s warm atmosphere wrapped around us like a blanket. The soft murmurs of other patrons, the gentle sway of kelp curtains in the currents, and the distant hum of the city above created a pocket of unexpected peace.

“You know what I hate most?”

She said suddenly, her voice gaining that tipsy edge. She leaned forward, amber eyes locking onto mine with drunken intensity.

“Men. All of you. Arrogant, possessive, always thinking you can fix everything with a smile and some pretty words. In my old life… they were the ones who destroyed it all. Promised love, promised protection, then turned around and stabbed you in the back when it suited them. Love? Ha. Love is a trap. A beautiful, glittering trap that ends with you watching everything you care about burn.”

Her words spilt out, raw and unfiltered. The wine had cracked open the walls she usually kept so carefully guarded. I listened quietly, nodding at the right moments, my expression soft and understanding rather than pitying.

“Tell me more, I’m not here to fix you, Big Sis. Just here to listen. And maybe annoy you a little so you don’t get too serious.”

I said gently, refilling her shell when it got low.

She laughed a short, bitter sound that turned warmer as she took another drink.

“You’re doing a great job at the annoying part. But… It’s different with you. You don’t push. You don’t look at me like I’m something to be with, a woman to protect you. You just… tease. Like a real annoying little brother would.”

She paused, her bloom spots opening wider as the alcohol deepened the flush on her cheeks.

“In my old timeline, I had someone like that once. A younger cousin. Always getting into trouble, always making me laugh even when the world was falling apart. He died protecting me in the end. Stupid boy.”

Her voice cracked slightly. I reached across the table and gently bumped her hand with mine, no pressure, just a small, brotherly touch.

“Sounds like he was a good kid. Probably learned it from his Big Sis.”

Elowen looked at me for a long moment, her eyes glassy from the wine and old pain.

“Maybe. But I couldn’t save him. Couldn’t save any of them. That’s why I gave up. What’s the point of fighting when the ending is always the same? Loss. Betrayal. Death.”

I let the silence sit for a while, refilling her drink and sipping my own. The tavern felt even safer now that I had subtly influenced the owner to keep other patrons away from our corner, creating a private bubble for her to unravel in.

“The point is that this timeline is different. You have me now, and I am not gonna die protecting you. And I’m not going anywhere. Annoying little brother, remember? I’ll stick around through the fights, the drinks, the bad decisions… all of it.”

I said finally, voice soft.

She stared at me, then let out a long, shaky laugh.

“Your way with words is dangerous, I can already see why you are famous, a heart to do good but with the mind of a seductress~”

We talked for hours. She ranted about men, how they always wanted something, how love had destroyed her old life, how she’d sworn off it completely after watching her loved ones turn against each other in the final days. I listened, teased gently when she got too dark (“So no hugs from little brother then?”), and shared small, carefully edited stories from my own “past” to build that bridge of trust.

The bonding deepened in the quiet moments between rants. She told me about the weight of being the next Matriarch, the expectations, the pressure, the fear of failing her people. I told her about my own journey of loss and growth, framing it from the perspective of a younger sibling to keep the “little brother” dynamic alive. She started smiling more, laughing at my stupid jokes, even leaning against my shoulder once when the wine made her drowsy.

“You dangerous kid, just how many hearts have you broken?”

She murmured at one point, her head resting lightly against me.

I wrapped an arm around her shoulders in a loose, brotherly hug.

“Don’t know, after I lost her, I never felt the desire or will to love again, it’s just difficult.”

She paused, a small glint in her eyes who saw my memories as she spoke, the sound warm and tired.

“Yeah…..I know the feeling.”

The tavern owner eventually signalled that rumours of our fight were spreading through the city, patrols were increasing, and descriptions of a woman and her merman companion were circulating. It was time to move.

We left the hidden tavern reluctantly, stepping back into the dim tunnels of the underbelly. Elowen walked a little steadier now, the wine and conversation having given her a renewed spark. I stayed close, keeping the “annoying little brother” act alive with light teasing as we headed toward a safer hideout I had prepared deeper in the city’s forgotten layers.

The night, or what passed for night in the endless ocean, stretched ahead of us. Rumours were spreading, pursuers were searching, but for the first time since this chaotic partnership began.
