Reality overload

The woods finally fell silent behind us as we crossed the last stretch of field toward Hilguard. The torches along the wall flickered in the dark, warm and steady, like they’d been waiting for us. It felt much larger than I remembered from DLO.

No shouts. No lights. No footsteps. Just the soft hum of magic in the air and the faint crackle of fire.

We stayed low until we reached the shadow of the wall. The wood was cold under my fingertips, familiar in a way that made my chest tighten. I stepped forward and knocked...three quick taps, the way he taught me.

For a moment, nothing.

Then the gate porthole creaked open just a sliver, torchlight spilling through the crack.

”Who goes there!”

The voice was sharp, commanding, unmistakable.

Geld.

His silhouette shifted behind the wood, an spear angled forward, ready to strike though the porthole if we made one wrong move.

”Identify yourselves,” he barked. ”No one enters Hilguard without my leave.”

My breath caught.

He didn’t recognize me.

Not like this.

Not with red hair, and a body that didn’t match the one he remembered.

I stepped closer, heart pounding.

”It’s me,” I called. ”Geld... it’s me.”

The arrow didn’t lower.

”State your name,” he demanded.

My throat tightened as I stepped closer.

He raised his arm sharply.

”STOP! Not another step!”

The spears lifted, and pointed more menacingly.

The group froze.

I stood in front...small, delicate, glowing faintly with frost.

It’s me,” I called. ”Geld... it’s me.”

The spear didn’t lower.

”State your name,” he demanded.

My throat tightened.

The name he expected...the one he knew...sat on my tongue like a stone. Heavy. Wrong. Full of memories I didn’t want to carry anymore. Memories of fear. Of confusion. Of being trapped in a body that never felt like mine.

I swallowed hard.

”I...”

My voice cracked.

”I don’t go by that name anymore.”

The spear tip pressed closer.

”Then speak the one you claim.”

I took a breath that felt like stepping off a cliff.

”It was Kris,” I said softly. ”But I don’t... I don’t relate to that anymore. It feels like someone else’s life.”

The torchlight flickered.

Charlie’s hand brushed my back, steadying me.

I lifted my chin.

”It’s Zora now,” I said confidently. ”That’s who I am.”

Silence.

Geld didn’t move.

Didn’t breathe.

Didn’t believe me.

Not yet at least, but there was a flicker of recognition in his eyes.

The name hung in the air between us...fragile, trembling, real.

Zora...

Me...

The gate creaked open enough for him and two guard to step through. Geld’s eyes narrowed.

”No,” he growled. ”You’re not her.”

Riley whispered, ”Here we go...”

Geld jabbed a finger at me .

”Kris is the Ice Swordswoman of DLO. Daughter of ice. The girl whom defeated the orc lord and his goblin minion, who pushed a bandit back through a rip in reality. The one who brought Samuel’s memento home to Katherine. The one Katherine calls family.”

He shook his head.

”That girl stood taller. Stronger. Her presence filled the air like winter. You,” he gestured at me, ”...you look like a child who wandered out of a storybook.”

My cheeks frosted pink with embarrassment. ”I am NOT a Disney princess dammit.”

Charlie smacked the back of my head. ”OUCH...what was that for.” I whined

Charlie gave me a look. ”Girls shouldn’t curse Zora. How many time do I need to say it!”

Geld froze.

He knew that frost. The scene before him was to familiar.

Geld’s glare was a wall.

The guards’ bows were raised.

The air was tight enough to snap.

He was about to speak.

And then—

A voice cut through everything.

”GELD YOU HOOLIGAN OPEN. THAT. CONFOUNDED GATE.”

Every guard flinched. As if it was their mother telling them off.

Geld stiffened like a kid caught stealing cookies.

Katherine marched toward us in full armor, polished breastplate, leather bracers, sword at her hip. She looked stronger than when we left. More grounded. More, alive.

She looked like someone who’d rebuilt herself from the inside out.

Riley whispered, ”Oh damn, she looks badass.”

Charlie nodded. ”She really does.”

Katherine stopped beside Geld, hands on her hips.

”Geld,” she said sharply, ”I realized who they were before you did. And you’ve been around them more than me.”

Geld opened his mouth.

Katherine raised a finger.

”No. Don’t even start.”

Geld shut his mouth.

She wasn’t the grieving widow I remembered, not the hollow‑eyed woman clutching a folded apron. But like an officer of the guard. Armor fitted. Shoulders squared. Hair tied back. A woman rebuilt from the inside out.

Her eyes landed on me.

Then she walked forward. Slow at first, then faster, then she was right in front of me, close enough that I could see the torchlight reflecting in her eyes.

She reached out, cupped my frost‑touched cheeks in both hands, and pulled me into a hug so fierce it knocked the breath out of me.

”Oh, sweetheart...” she whispered into my hair. ”You look so different.”

My throat tightened. I didn’t know what to say. She pulled back just enough to look at my face again.

Then she smiled soft, certain, relieved.

”How did you even recognize me?” I whispered. ”I don’t look anything like before.”

Her smile softened, warm and certain.

”I’d know that frosted face anywhere,” she said. ”And your eyes... your eyes are the same.”

Something fluttered in my chest, a tiny, bright spark of relief I didn’t know I’d been holding back.

And before I could stop it. Before I even felt it happening. My pointed ears gave a tiny, involuntary happy twitch.

I didn’t notice.

But Katherine did.

Her smile widened, eyes softening with something like affection and amusement.

”Oh sweetheart,” she murmured, brushing a thumb over my cheek, ”you really haven’t changed as much as you think.”

Katherine didn’t let go of me for a long moment. When she finally did, she kept one hand on my shoulder and turned sharply toward Geld.

”Open the gate,” she ordered. ”And shut it behind them. Mount the guards. Now.”

Geld straightened like he’d been struck by lightning. ”Yes, my Lady!”

He swung the gate open fully, and Katherine ushered us inside with a protective arm, like she was herding her own children. The moment we crossed the threshold, she snapped.

”Close and bar the gates!”

The heavy wood slammed closed behind us, bolts sliding into place. Closing out the rest of the world.

Inside the courtyard, two small figures were waiting...Katherine’s children.

The older boy, stood stiffly like he was trying to imitate a guard.

The younger girl, clutched a wooden toy and blinked up at us with huge eyes.

Katherine softened instantly.

”Elias. Mira. Come here.”

The boy Elias, stepped forward first, cautious but curious.

The girl Mira, ran straight to her mother’s side, peeking around her skirts.

Katherine rested a hand on each of their shoulders.

”These are the ones who saved Hilguard,” she said softly. ”Remember...Kris and Charlie.”

I winced.

”Katherine... my name is different now,” I said quietly. ”It’s Zora.”

Katherine nodded, accepting it without hesitation. ”Of course it is dear.”

Mira gasped like I’d just told her the moon had a new name.

”Zora?” she squeaked. ”It’s big sis Zora now?”

Before I could react, she launched herself at me, tiny arms wrapping around my waist with surprising force.

My ears did a tiny, involuntary happy twitch again.

I didn’t notice.

Mira did.

She pulled back just enough to stare up at me, eyes sparkling.

”Can you do the snow thing?” she whispered, practically vibrating with excitement.

Mira tugged on my sleeve again, eyes huge and sparkling.

”Big sis Zora... can you do the snow thing? Like before..”

She still thought the cheek‑frosting was the magic.

She thought that was all I could do.

But I knew better now.

I took a slow breath and lifted my hand.

Mira froze.

Elias leaned in.

Katherine watched, silent and steady.

Cold gathered in my palm, deliberate, controlled, familiar.

Like calling winter with a thought.

And then I released it.

A swirl of shimmering frost spiraled from my hand, drifting through the air like tiny stars. It danced around the children, settling on their hair and shoulders in a sparkling halo.

Mira screamed.

A delighted, full‑body wiggle scream.

”YOU CAN DO MAGIC?!” she shrieked.

Elias’s jaw dropped. ”REAL magic! With your HAND!”

I nodded, calm and certain.

”Yes,” I said. ”I can.”

Mira grabbed both my hands, bouncing like she was powered by pure joy.

”BIG SIS ZORA CAN DO MAGIC!”

My pointed elf ears gave another tiny, involuntary happy twitch.

But both kids saw it.

And they absolutely lost their minds.

Mira was still bouncing around me like a festival lantern with legs, chanting ”Big sis Zora can do magic!” while Elias tried to pretend he wasn’t just as excited.

And then Mira noticed Charlie.

It happened in that instant. Charlie stepped a little closer to me, maybe to hear the Kathrine better, maybe just to be supportive, and Mira’s entire body froze mid‑bounce. Her eyes widened. Her mouth dropped open. She inhaled like she was about to summon a dragon.

”BIG SIS CHARLIE TOO!!!”

Charlie barely had time to blink.

Mira launched herself at her with the same velocity she’d used on me earlier, a tiny, festival‑lantern missile of pure affection. Charlie let out a startled ”oof!” as Mira wrapped her arms around her waist, nearly knocking her off balance.

Charlie made a noise I’d never heard from her before — somewhere between a squeak and a gasp.

”Oh my gods,” she whispered, already melting. ”You’re... you’re so cute. You’re too cute. I would still die for you!”

Charlie looked at me, panicked and soft at the same time. ”Zora. Help. I’m being emotionally assassinated.”

I snorted. ”You’ll survive.”

”No,” Charlie whispered, hugging Mira tighter. ”I won’t. I’m gone. This child has ended me.”

Katherine let it go for a moment, just long enough for the joy to settle into the courtyard like warm light.

Then she cleared her throat.

”Alright, you two,” she said, slipping back into her officer voice. ”Run along now.”

Mira froze mid‑bounce. ”But..”

”No buts,” Katherine said gently, brushing a hand over her daughter’s hair. ”We need to speak with the elder. It’s important.”

”Elias I place you in charge of guarding Mira.” She said. Elias straightened like a tiny guard. ”Yes, Mama.”

Mira pouted for exactly one second before her eyes flicked back to me.

”Big sis Zora,” she whispered, ”don’t leave before I come back.”

My pointed ears gave a twitch.

Mira squealed. ”She twitched again! That means yes!”

Elias grabbed her wrist. ”Come on, Mira!”

They took off across the courtyard, Mira waving both arms wildly, Elias trying to look responsible while clearly vibrating with excitement.

Katherine watched them go, her expression softening... then shifting into something steadier, heavier.

She turned back to me, to Charlie, to the others.

”We need to speak with the elder,” she said quietly. ”Now.”

The warmth of the moment lingered behind us.

But the weight of what came next settled in front of us.

And I followed her.

The beaded curtain rattled softly as Katherine pushed it aside, and the elder looked up from his low table.

He looked older than I remembered.

More tired.

But his eyes still sharp, steady, and searching. They were exactly the same.

For a moment, he simply stared at us.

At me.

At Charlie.

At Riley and the others.

Then he rose slowly, leaning on his carved staff.

”You’ve returned,” he said quietly. ”But... you are not as you were.”

My throat tightened. I stepped forward.

”Elder,” I said, ”we need to explain what happened. All of it.”

He nodded once, motioning for us to sit. We didn’t. None of us could.

So I told him.

I told him everything.

That Hilguard wasn’t in its own world anymore.

That the sky flash wasn’t magic, it was a tear.

That the forest shifting was a collision.

That this place, this town, these people... had been pulled into my world.

When I finished, the room went still.

The elder’s fingers tightened around his staff.

”You mean to say,” he murmured, ”that Hilguard... is no longer in its rightful realm of Elyndor.”

”No,” I said softly. ”You’re in mine... Earth.”

Shock flickered across his face...real, raw, unguarded.

But he didn’t deny it.

He didn’t accuse us.

He didn’t call it impossible.

He believed us.

Slowly, he turned his gaze to Charlie.

Then to me.

His eyes widened...not in fear, but in recognition.

”You two...” he whispered. ”The sisters of frost and flame.”

Charlie stiffened. ”You... remember us?”

”You look different,” he said, voice trembling with something like awe. ”Changed in form. Changed in body. But the aura... the essence... the bond between you... I would know it anywhere.”

My breath caught.

Even though we didn’t look anything like we used to.

Even though our bodies, our faces, our everything had changed.

He still knew.

Charlie swallowed hard. ”Elder... we’re not the same people we were.”

He shook his head.

”No,” he said. ”You are more.”

He stepped closer, studying us with the same reverence he once reserved for ancient relics.

”You walk in new shapes,” he said softly, ”but your souls... your souls have not forgotten who you are.”

Katherine exhaled shakily behind us.

Riley whispered, ”Holy crap...”

The elder looked at me again, really looked, and his voice dropped to a near whisper.

”Zora,” he said, using my new name without hesitation. ”Tell me everything. From the beginning.”

The elder listened in silence as I finished explaining how Hilguard had been pulled into my world. His hands trembled slightly on his staff, but his eyes never left mine.

When I stopped speaking, the room felt too still.

There was one more truth I hadn’t said yet.

I took a breath.

”There’s something else you need to know,” I said quietly. ”About Charlie and me.”

Charlie glanced at me, but she didn’t interrupt.

”We’re... not just travelers anymore,” I continued. ”We’re daughters of Hestia....The goddess.”

The elder froze.

For a heartbeat, he didn’t breathe.

Then he bowed his head, not to us, but to the name.

”Hestia...” he whispered. ”Keeper of the Hearth. Mother of Flame. The First Light.”

His voice shook with reverence.

”I have not heard her name spoken in many moons,” he murmured. ”And you say she has claimed you both as her daughters?”

”Yes,” I said. ”She saved us. She chose us.”

Charlie nodded beside me, steady and sure.

The elder pressed a hand to his chest, overwhelmed. ”Then the old prophecies were true... the goddess would return her line to the world in its hour of need.”

He looked up at me again, not with fear, but with awe.

”If Hestia walks again through her children,” he said softly, ”then the world is changing far more than I feared.”

He sank slowly onto the cushion behind him, gripping his staff.

”Tell me,” he said, voice low and grave. ”What dangers do we face in your world? What threats do we face now?”

I exhaled, the weight of it settling on my shoulders.

”There are many,” I said. ”And they’re not like the threats you know.”

He nodded once, bracing himself.

So I told him.

”Governments,” I said. ”Armies. People with weapons that can level cities. Organizations that hunt anything they don’t understand. And one man...Cross, who caused the worlds to merge.”

The elder’s eyes widened.

”And there’s more,” I added. ”A group called Horizon Veil. They’re hunting me specifically. They know what I am now.”

The elder’s knuckles whitened around his staff.

”Your world...” he whispered. ”It is far more dangerous than ours.”

”Yes,” I said. ”And now Hilguard is in the middle of it.”

Charlie stepped closer, her voice steady.

”That’s why we came to you,” she said. ”We needed to tell you.”

The elder closed his eyes for a long moment, breathing deeply.

When he opened them, they were sharp again, the eyes of a man who had led a village through famine, war, and monsters.

”Then we must prepare,” he said. ”For whatever comes next.”

The elder sat back after hearing everything, the merging, the danger, the goddess, the truth of our world. His expression shifted from shock... to awe... to something heavier.

”Daughters of Hestia,” he murmured. ”Daughters of the Mother of Creation herself.”

Charlie and I exchanged a look.

The elder rose slowly, leaning on his staff as if the weight of what he was about to say required grounding.

”In ancient lore,” he said, voice low as he pulled an achiest looking book off of a nearby shelf, opening it to show up and continuing, ”there is a prophecy going back to the first days of our worlds creation.

His voice was a rasp of stone and smoke, each syllable dragging through the air like it had been waiting centuries to be spoken. The chamber smelled of dust and pine resin, and the torches flickered as though they too were listening.

”Hear me, child of the flame,” he began, his eyes clouded with the green shimmer of the Veil. ”Long before Elyndor was carved from the bones of the world, the daughters of Hestia walked unseen. They were not flesh, but shades, cast from the far reaches of the realm beyond, where time folds upon itself and memory burns eternal.”

His hand trembled as he traced a sigil into the air, glowing faintly.

”They came first as whispers,” he said, ”their voices carried on the breath of dying stars. The world knew them only by the warmth that lingered before the cold, by the ice that refused to fade.”

I felt Charlie shift beside me, the air thickening around us.

”When the Veil breaks,” the elder continued, ”the Hearth shall stir again. The daughters will return, different, yet the same. Their souls born up in new vessels, their essence unchanged. They will walk among mortals, bearing the mark of the goddess, and the world will tremble beneath their step.”

He turned his gaze to me, and I felt the weight of centuries press against my chest.

”The ice shall be named Queen, her crown forged from echoes of sorrow. The flame shall be her sister, her heart the ember that never fades. Together they will bind the realms, shadow and light, mortal and divine, and the Hearth shall burn anew.”

The elder’s voice deepened, becoming something more than human — a resonance that seemed to come from the stones themselves.

”At the breaking of the Veil, the daughters shall be named royalty, not by choice, but by destiny. The stars will bow, the rivers will still, and Elyndor shall awaken to its true name.”

He closed his eyes, whispering the final words like a curse and a blessing intertwined.

”So it was written in the ash of the First Fire. So it shall rise again when the world remembers its warmth.”

My stomach dropped.

Charlie blinked. ”Uh... royalty?”

The elder nodded.

”You are heirs of the Mother of Creation. By blood, by spirit, by destiny.”

I opened my mouth to protest, but he lifted a hand.

”And with the worlds merging... with dangers rising... with forces unseen hunting you...” His gaze sharpened. ”There must be a leader. One who stands in defense of the masses. One who carries the will of the goddess.”

I froze.

Charlie froze.

Riley mouthed ”oh no.”

The elder turned fully toward me.

”Zora,” he said, voice steady and absolute. ”You shall be our leader. Our queen named in ice.”

My brain stopped.

”Wait...what...no...I...I’m not...I can’t...This is way to sudden...I’m not queen material!”

The elder smiled gently, like he was watching a child insist they couldn’t possibly walk.

”Leadership is not chosen by comfort,” he said. ”It is chosen by necessity. And you are the one the goddess remade.” His words matter of fact.

I looked desperately at Charlie.

She suddenly found the wall VERY interesting.

”Wow,” she said loudly. ”Look at that... wood. Very... wooden.”

”CHARLIE.”

”Elder you can’t.... I can’t be a queen. You don’t know the first thing about me!!”

”I know enough he said confidently.”

”What if I a bad person what if I’m evil or something how could you know. ”

Riley coughed and pretended to tie her shoe.

Nate stared at the ceiling like it held the secrets of the universe.

Lucas stepped behind Nate like he could hide behind him.

Katherine folded her arms and gave me a sympathetic but absolutely unhelpful smile.

I stared at all of them, betrayed.

”Guys?! Help me?!”

Nothing.

Not a single one of them made eye contact.

The elder placed a hand over his heart.

”Zora, daughter of Hestia... the people will look to you now.”

My mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.

”I— I don’t— I can’t— I’m not—”

Charlie patted my shoulder without looking at me.

”You’ll be great. The prophecy says so...” she said.

”CHARLIE.”

Riley gave me a thumbs‑up.

”Congrats, your majesty.”

”RILEY.”

The elder bowed his head.

”Welcome, Queen Zora.”

And I stood there, completely flustered, completely overwhelmed, and completely abandoned by every single person who was supposed to have my back.
