TOOTS MAGOOTS

—————————————————-/////////

The Elder finally steadied himself, though his hands still shook faintly. He looked at each of us as if memorizing our faces before something bigger swept us away.

“This… this must be reported to the Council,” he murmured, gesturing at where the tear in reality had been. “But for now… You have done Hilgard a great service. More than you know.”

A soft chime echoed through the room.

PING — QUEST COMPLETE: “DEN OF THE GREY”

Warm light washed over us as the system processed the rewards, and the familiar surge of leveling washed through my body.

Level Up.

Frost magic surged through me, steadier and sharper than before, and my blade hummed with cold potential. I felt my magic sink deeper into my being, more controlled.

Charlie’s hands glowed with soft gold as she reached Level 6 Healer.

Riley’s tail flicked with new precision.

Lucas’s armor gleamed brighter, sturdier.

Nate immediately tried to cast something and nearly sneezed sparks all over himself.

Then the rewards materialized in our inventories with a crisp ping.

Lucas received Bulwark’s Embrace, a heavy rune‑etched shield he strapped on immediately, grinning like a kid on Christmas.

Riley got the Shadowstep Anklet, a delicate silver band that boosted her agility she twirled her foot, tail swishing as she admired it.

Charlie tied her Blessed Ribbon of Renewal into her hair without hesitation, the white fabric glowing faintly.

Nate draped his Arcane Scholar’s Sash around his waist and instantly looked ten percent more dramatic.

I thought the worst part of the day was behind me. We’d saved Hilgard, hadn’t we? My legs went jelly, my brain turned to mush, and a soft blue shimmer appeared in front of me.

A reward.

My reward.

The light swirled, glittering like frost caught in moonlight, and when it cleared, floating delicately in the air like it had been handcrafted by winter itself, was…

A skirt.

A tiny, icy‑blue skirt. With white thigh-high tights.

The frosted ice princess skirt is embroidered with little gemstone‑like ice crystals around the hem. It sparkled like fresh snow under a full moon. The socks had designs at the top.

Charlie and Riley didn’t gasp.

They detonated.

Charlie clutched her chest. “OH. MY. GOD. It’s PRECIOUS.”

Riley squealed. “Kris, put it on. Put it on right now. Immediately. Faster.”

My entire body locked up. My ears frosted. My face went nuclear.

“It’s— it’s a s‑s‑skirt,” I stammered, voice cracking like a dying flute. “I c‑can’t— it’s too— too— girly.”

Charlie grinned like she’d just been handed the keys to my dignity. “Exactly.”

I backed up so fast I nearly tripped. “Charlie, don’t— don’t you dare—”

She turned to Geld. “Geld, is there a private room we can use?”

I made a noise that wasn’t human. “CHARLIE, NO—!”

Geld, oblivious and helpful in the worst possible way, pointed. “Right there, miss.”

“Perfect,” Charlie said.

“NO IT’S NOT PERFECT—!”

Too late.

She grabbed my wrist and dragged me like a malfunctioning Roomba across the floor. Riley followed, practically skipping. The door shut behind me with a soft click that sounded like doom.

Charlie called through the door, “…and don’t forget the tights kaaay~”

Inside the skirt, and tights lay in my hands like a weapon forged specifically to destroy my dignity. Cold. Sparkly. Girly. I stared at them, horrified.

“I can’t wear these,” I whispered. “I’m not ready for…for skirts. I’m not…I can’t…I’m not built for—”

My reflection in the metal panel didn’t help. My face was already pink. My ears were already frosted. I looked like someone who should wear the skirt.

Which somehow made it worse.

I changed anyway, because Charlie was scary she would break the door down if I didn’t.

And the moment I stepped out—

Charlie screamed.

Riley screamed.

Nate screamed from across the room even though he wasn’t supposed to be watching.

Charlie grabbed my shoulders. “KRIS. YOU LOOK LIKE A SNOW FAIRY PRINCESS.”

Riley clasped her hands. “It’s PERFECT. It’s SO YOU.”

I tugged the hem down, mortified beyond mortal comprehension. “It’s cold. Why is it so drafty? Why does it feel like my legs are on display? Uuuugh this is humiliating—!”

Charlie beamed. “It’s called the Frosted ice princess skirt. It’s supposed to be breezy.”

Nate leaned over a crate. “Yeah, Kris. It’s literally ice‑themed. Did you expect pants?”

I made a strangled noise. “I’m not ready for this. I’m not— I can’t— I’m going to die.”

Charlie gently pulled my hands away from my face. “Sweetie. Just think of it as a short dress. You’re adorable. It’s fine.”

“IT’S NOT FINE,” I squeaked.

Riley nodded enthusiastically. “You look like you’re about to faint. It’s precious.”

“STOP CALLING ME PRECIOUS—!”

I tried to retreat into the room, but Charlie and Riley immediately grabbed my arms.

“Nope,” Charlie said, hauling me forward.

“You’re not hiding,” Riley added, pushing from behind.

“I’M NOT READY—!” I squeaked, heels skidding uselessly across the floor.

They dragged me out like a panicked cat being taken to the vet, my legs wobbling, the skirt swishing traitorously with every step. I tried to dig my heels in. I tried to escape. I tried to melt into the floor.

None of it worked.

They deposited me in the middle of the room like a decorative snowflake.

Lucas, who had been trying very hard not to stare, finally spoke.

“You look… uuuh…good,” he said quietly. “It fits.”

I froze.

My face went nuclear.

My ears frosted over.

My knees wobbled.

Charlie smirked like she’d just witnessed a confession.

The skirt swished when I moved. The cold air brushed my legs. The ice crystals sparkled with every step. It was cute. Too cute. Unfairly cute. And I was not emotionally prepared.

“Charlie,” I whispered, tugging the hem again, “I’m not ready for this. I’m not ready for skirts. I’m not ready for people seeing me in skirts. I’m not ready for me seeing me in skirts.”

She softened instantly. “You don’t have to be ready. You just have to not think about it.”

Riley nodded. “And maybe twirl a little.”

“RILEY—!”

Lucas coughed into his hand, ears pink.

And me?

I wanted to crawl into a he, and live there forever.

Nate sniggered, “This is the best day of my life.”

I gave him a whithereing look “Keep talking Nate and I’ll have my ‘MOM’ turn you into a girl too.

Nate immediately shut his mouth tight, face pale.   “Y…you wouldn’t….!!!”

“Try me Nate, it’d be nice to have a girlfriend to experience this with me!”

Before I could flick frost at him, or mess with his mind more. Geld spoke.

The Elder would like to rest, please follow me.

Geld led us outside the Elder’s house, handing me a pouch heavy with coins. “From the Elder,” he said. “And from the town. You’ve earned it.”

+250 Gold.

Reputation increased: Hilgard Trusted Protectors.

As we stepped outside, Geld cleared his throat. “You should stay the night,” he said firmly. “It’s late. The roads aren’t safe. And after what you’ve seen…”

I shook my head. “We need to get back to the Cordova. There’s… some things we need to do.”

Geld hesitated, then nodded with reluctant respect. “Then at least let us see you off.”

We walked toward the gates, and as we drew closer, I noticed a faint glow of lantern lights. Hundreds of people. Practically the entire town had gathered. Every villager. Every guard. Every child. Lanterns, and torches glowed in their hands, lighting the night like a festival.

The widow stood near the front, her children holding her hands. When she saw me, her face softened. The children broke away and ran straight toward me. The little girl hugged my waist; the boy grabbed my hand.

“Big sister Kris!” she chirped. “ Oh wow, that skirt is so pretty!”

“How do you know my name… “I smiled down at them, my cheeks frosting at the new skirt comment.

“Mr Geld’s been there telling the whole town how you would  beat those goblins for us

Thank you for trying to find our papa for us, mama told us to say thank you.”

My heart nearly broke.

Charlie got tackled next, the little girl clinging to her leg. “You too! You’re like… the other big sister!”

Charlie melted instantly. “I would die for you.”

Villagers stepped forward with bundles of food — warm bread, dried fruit, smoked meat, and small jars of honey that glowed softly in the lantern light.

“For your journey.”

“Thank you for helping us.”

“Come back safe.”

“You’re always welcome here.”

Before long, Nate and Lucas were overloaded with supplies, their bags bulging at the seams. Nate staggered under the weight of a sack of dried apples and called out, “Kris, you gonna help or what?”

I looked at him mischievously, tilting my head. “I thought guys were supposed to do all the heavy lifting. Why are you asking me? I don’t wanna dirty my new skirt now would I?

He froze. Blinked. Then sputtered. “That— that’s not— you can’t just—!”

Riley snorted. “She’s got you there.”

Charlie grinned. “It’s tradition, Nate. You can’t make the lady carry the luggage.”

Lucas muttered, “Pretty sure she’s enjoying this.”

I smirked. “I’m just embracing my role. You wouldn’t want to break social norms, would you?”

Nate sighed dramatically, adjusting his pack. “Fine. But if I collapse, you’re carrying me.”

“Sure,” I said sweetly. “I’ll drag you by your fancy sash.”

Nate groaned into the sky. “I hate this timeline.”

The laughter faded into a gentle quiet as the widow stepped close, her presence soft and steady. She placed a hand on my cheek, her touch warm against the faint chill of my skin. “Be safe, little one,” she whispered. “And remember… even strong girls need rest.”

I nodded, throat tight. “I’ll come back. I promise.”

Then I paused, surprised at myself for not asking sooner. “Ma’am… what’s your name?” I gave her a sheepish look, embarrassed for not asking earlier — after everything.

She chuckled, eyes kind. “Oh, is that all?”

I nodded quickly.

“It’s Kathrine, dear.” She patted my cheek and pulled me into a warm hug.

Then she turned, and her gaze landed on Charlie.

Charlie blinked, surprised when Kathrine stepped closer and took her hands. “And you,” Kathrine said gently, “you take care of your sister.”

Charlie’s eyes widened. “I— I will. Always.”

Kathrine smiled knowingly, squeezing her hands. “I can see how much she means to you. Keep her safe.”

Charlie swallowed hard, nodding with a seriousness she rarely showed. “I promise.”

Riley wiped her eyes. Nate pretended he wasn’t crying. Lucas stood stiffly, overwhelmed. I swallowed hard, cheeks frosting faintly, and nodded to her.

We gathered everything and headed toward the gate, villagers calling out their goodbyes.

“Don’t be a stranger, Kris!”

“Come back to us!”

“Visit anytime, you’re family now!”

“Don’t be a stranger, Kris! Make sure you come back, okay!”

I turned and waved to Kathrine , and her kids as the gates opened for us, her lantern glowing like a promise in the dark. A reminder that Hilgard would always be waiting, warm and welcoming, no matter how far we wandered.

We stepped through the gates, lantern light fading behind us. The night was cool and quiet, the path ahead lit by moonlight and stars glowing resolutely

“So Lucas Nate you guys reached level five. Did you unlock your class skill…?”

We hadn’t even made it past the last lantern post outside Hilgard when we heard someone shouting behind us.

“WAIT! HOLD UP!”

Geld.

He jogged toward us, breath puffing in the cold night air, waving both arms like he was trying to flag down a runaway wagon. Behind him were two guards leading a pair of horses—one chestnut, one dapple gray—and an old but sturdy wooden carriage rattling behind them.

Ping…

Quest special requirements met. Uncommon loot box acquired.

We all stopped.

Riley blinked. “Uh… did we forget something?”

Geld skidded to a halt, hands on his knees as he caught his breath. “No… no, you didn’t forget anything. We did.”

He straightened, cleared his throat, and gestured grandly at the horses and carriage.

“This is for you.”

I stared. “For… us?”

He nodded. “A gift from the town. After everything you’ve done… after what you brought back for Kathrine … after what you faced in those caves… It’s the least we can offer.”

Charlie gasped. “Geld, this is, this is huge!”

Riley ran straight to the horses, tail wagging. “Oh my GOD they’re adorable!”

Lucas inspected the carriage like he was checking for structural integrity. “This is… actually pretty solid.”

Nate poked one of the wheels. “It’s not cursed, right?”

Geld blinked. “Why would it be cursed?”

Nate shrugged. “I don’t know. Everything else lately has been cursed.”

Geld ignored him.

He stepped closer to me, lowering his voice.

“The Elder insisted. He said… you’ll need a faster way to travel. And a safer one.”

My chest tightened. “ Geld… this is amazing!!!”

Geld didn’t answer directly. His silence was enough.

He placed a hand on the chestnut horse’s neck. “This one’s named Bramble. Gentle, steady, good with long distances.”

He patted the dapple gray. “And this is Mist. A bit spirited, but loyal.”

Riley whispered, “Mist is so pretty…” Mist nuzzled Riley’s hand making her giggle.

Charlie nudged me. “Kris, you should name the carriage.”

I blinked. “Why me?”

“Because you’re the main character,” Nate said matter‑of‑factly.

Lucas coughed. “He means because you’re the one who keeps almost dying.”

“Lucas!” Charlie hissed.

He looked away, ears pink again. “I meant it affectionately.”

I sighed, cheeks warming. “Fine. I’ll name it.”

I stepped toward the carriage. It was old, yes—weathered wood, iron‑bound wheels, a few scratches—but it had a kind of charm. Like it had stories. Like it had carried families, goods, memories.

Like it had been waiting for us.

“…Snowdrop,” I said softly. Nah that’s too gir-“ I was cut off.

Riley’s tail wagged. “Awwww.”

“No-“

Charlie beamed. “That’s perfect.”

“I didn-“

Nate nodded. “Very on‑brand.”

“Wai-“ I sighed and gave up.

Lucas gave a small smile. “Fits.”

Geld grinned. “Snowdrop it is.”

He handed me the reins. “Take care of them. And yourselves.”

I swallowed hard. “We will.”

He stepped back as we climbed aboard—Charlie beside me, Riley perched on the edge, Nate already rummaging through the storage compartment, Lucas taking the driver’s bench with practiced ease. Like he’d done it before.

The horses snorted, eager.

The night stretched ahead, moonlit and quiet.

And as Snowdrop creaked forward, wheels rolling over the dirt path, I rocked with the sway. My mind was going over all the things that had been happening to us.

Charlie slid onto the bench beside me. “ Umm… Kris your legs…I can see.

I looked down flushed cold, and snapped my legs closed. “uuugh… so embarrassing.”

She sat there for a moment, legs swinging slightly, watching the road ahead. Riley and Nate were already asleep in the back, and Lucas was focused on the reins. It was quiet enough that I could hear my own heartbeat.

Then Charlie nudged me gently with her shoulder.

“So,” she said, voice soft but unmistakably Charlie, “you wanna talk about it?”

I blinked. “About what?”

She gave me a look. The kind that said don’t play dumb with me, little sibling.

“You,” she said. “Your… transformation. Everything that’s happening to your body. And how you’re handling it.”

My stomach tightened. “I’m… fine.”

Charlie snorted. “You’re about as ‘fine’ as Nate is ‘quiet.’”

I sighed, staring at my hands. Frost shimmered faintly across my fingertips.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to feel,” I admitted. “Everything’s changing so fast. My body, my voice, the way people look at me… the way I look at myself.”

Charlie didn’t interrupt. She just listened.

“I keep thinking I should be freaking out more,” I said. “Or less. Or… something. But I don’t know what the right reaction is.”

Charlie leaned back, arms crossed, eyes softening.

“There isn’t a right reaction,” she said. “There’s just your reaction.”

I swallowed. “I didn’t choose this.”

“No,” she agreed. “But you’re living it. And you’re doing better than you think.”

I looked at her. “How can you say that?”

“Because I’m your sister,” she said simply. “I see things you don’t.”

She reached out and gently flicked a strand of my hair, where frost shimmered like tiny stars.

“You’re scared,” she said. “But you’re also curious. And brave. And stubborn as hell. And you’re trying so hard to understand yourself even when the world is throwing chaos at you.”

My throat tightened.

Charlie continued, voice softer now.

“And Kris… you’re becoming a girl. That’s real. That’s happening. And it’s okay to not know how to feel about it yet.”

I stared at the road, the moonlight blurring slightly.

“I don’t know if I’m supposed to be angry,” I whispered. “Or terrified. Or both.”

Charlie smiled gently. “Both are normal.”

I let out a shaky breath. “Do I… look different to you?”

She didn’t hesitate.

“You look like you,” she said. “Just… more you than before.”

My chest tightened. “Is that good?”

“It’s beautiful,” she said. “And I’m proud of you.”

I froze.

Charlie reached over and pulled me into a sideways hug, warm and steady.

“You don’t have to figure everything out tonight,” she murmured. “You don’t have to decide who you are in one moment. You just have to keep being honest with yourself. And let us be here for you.”

I leaned into her, just a little.

“Thanks, Charlie.”

“Always,” she said, squeezing my shoulder. “I’m your big sister. It’s literally my job.”

Riley spoke up.  “So… people are going to start changing in real life, right?”

The carriage went quiet.

Riley sat up, ears twitching. “I mean…we’re changing and Hestia says it’s not just us.”

Charlie frowned. “And if everyone becomes their avatar… the world’s going to get chaotic.”

Lucas’s voice was low. “Some people will handle it well. Some won’t.”

I hugged my arms around myself. “I just hope people stay safe.”

Riley sighed. “Yeah. I was trying to check the news earlier, but the UI was glitching in Hilgard.”

She flicked her wrist, pulling up her interface again.

A soft blue glow lit her face.

“I’ll try again now that we’re moving. Maybe I can find something about—”

She froze.

Her ears shot straight up.

Her tail puffed.

“Oh. My. God.”

Charlie leaned in. “What? What happened?”

Riley didn’t answer.

She just turned the screen toward us.

And my stomach dropped.

The footage was crystal clear.

My eyes glowing, frost on my ears, panic on my face—shoving him back through the shimmering crack in reality.

The comments were insane.

• “WHO IS SHE???”

• “This looks REAL.”

• “Is this AI???”

• “She SHOVED him.”

• “Elf girl is gorgeous what the hell.”

• “Bro this is first contact.”

Charlie whispered, “Kris… this has millions of views.”

Riley swallowed. “Ten million. And climbing.

Lucas’s grip on the reins tightened.

Nate squeaked. “You’re… you’re literally the face of the apocalypse.”

I buried my face in my hands. “Oh no…”

Riley scrolled.

“Wait—there’s another one.”

My heart stopped.

The one where I was…

fighting.

Frost swirling around my blade.

My eyes glowing brighter.

My movements were sharper, faster, and more fluid than I’d ever moved in real life.

The comments were even worse.

• “SHE’S A BOSS FIGHT.”

• “This girl is OP.”

• “Is this a movie???”

• “That guy is good but not as strong.”

• “This is NOT AI.”

• “She’s real. She’s REAL.”

Riley whispered, “Kris… these videos are everywhere. TikTok. YouTube. Reddit. News sites. People are freaking out.”

Charlie put a hand on my shoulder. “Hey. Breathe.”

I tried.

But seeing myself like that. Not just as an avatar, but as something people were saying was otherworldly, made my chest tighten.

Lucas glanced back at me.

Like he wanted to say something but didn’t know how.

Riley kept scrolling, voice trembling.

“Kris… you’re not just viral. You’re… iconic. People are making fan art. Edits. Theories. Some think you’re an alien. Some think you’re a goddess.

Charlie groaned. “Of course they do.”

Nate pointed at the screen. “Someone slowed down your frost burst frame by frame. They’re analyzing your magic like it’s a physics lecture.”

Riley swallowed. “People are scared, some are excited, some are obsessed, but everyone is talking about you.”

I stared at the glowing screen, at myself.

“…I didn’t ask for this,” I whispered.

Charlie squeezed my hand. “We know…Okay….We need a plan.”

Riley nodded, ears flat. “Yeah. Because if we found these videos by accident, the devs definitely have.”

Nate groaned. “Oh gods, the devs. They’re gonna dissect every frame.”

Lucas didn’t say anything.

But his jaw tightened.

And he kept glancing back at me when I wasn’t looking.

Charlie scooted closer, lowering her voice. “Kris… we need to protect your identity. Both here and out there.”

I swallowed. “How? My face is literally everywhere.”

Riley held up a finger. “Correction, your avatar’s face is everywhere. Not your real one.”

Nate perked up. “Right! And your avatar looks different than your real body. So technically, people don’t know what you look like IRL, at least for now.”

Charlie nodded. “But they will. If the transformations keep happening.”

The carriage fell quiet again.

“We need to stay ahead of the devs,” Riley said as if she were announcing a boss fight.

Charlie crossed her arms. “If the devs see those videos and connect them to you, they’ll want to know why you’re changing faster than everyone else.”

Nate shuddered. “And I do NOT want to be on the devs’ science table.”

Lucas finally spoke, voice low and steady. “They’ll want to study her.”

My breath caught.

He looked at me then, really looked—eyes soft but serious.

“They’ll want to figure out what makes you different.”

Charlie put a protective hand on my shoulder. “Which is exactly why we’re not letting them anywhere near her.”

Riley nodded. “We need to hide your identity. Mask your real‑world info. Make sure no one can connect Kris the player to Kris the elf girl.”

I raised a hand. “Well not to dampen the mood but they already know my real name …”

Charlie’s face paled at my words. Becoming pensive.

“Oh. Right.”Riley scrolled again, frowning.

“They haven’t said a word. Not a tweet. Not a statement. Nothing.”

Lucas’s eyes narrowed. “Which means they’re either panicking… or they expected this.”

Nate gulped. “Both options are terrifying.”

Lucas kept his eyes on the road. “If they expected this, they’re watching the players. Especially the ones changing the fastest.”

Riley pointed at me. “Which is you?”

My stomach twisted.

“…Why me?” I whispered.

Charlie squeezed my hand. “We don’t know yet. But we’re going to figure it out.”

Riley nodded. “And until then, we keep you off their radar.”

Nate added, “And we level up fast so we’re not helpless if something happens.”

That’s when Charlie sat up straighter, eyes sharp in that big‑sister‑about-to-take-charge way. Unfortunately, I didn’t see her giddy smirk.

“Okay. No. Absolutely not. We are NOT letting the devs or the internet figure out who Kris is.”

Riley blinked. “Uh… yeah, obviously, but how—”

Charlie held up a finger. “First of all, Kris needs to wear girl clothes IRL. All the time. Don’t worry your big sis will give you a crash course in girl.”

I choked. “What?! Why?!”

Charlie gave me the most are you serious right now look I’ve ever seen.

“Because your avatar is a girl, genius. And you’re turning into her. If anyone sees you IRL looking like a half‑transformed frost elf in boy clothes, they’ll connect the dots instantly.”

Riley nodded. “She’s right. The more you match your avatar, the harder it is for people to tell what’s transformation and what’s just… fashion.”

Nate added, without realizing Charlie’s plot. “Plus, if you suddenly show up in public looking different, people will assume it’s intentional, not supernatural.”

Charlie continued, unstoppable.

“Second, we dye your hair back red.”

I blinked. “But my hair is already—”

“Nope,” Charlie cut in. “It’s shifting. Getting lighter. Frostier. If the devs or anyone online sees you with white‑silver hair? Boom. Instant match to the videos.”

Riley scrolled through the footage. “Yeah… your hair in the tear video is basically glowing. You need to look as normal as possible IRL.”

Nate nodded. “Your natural red hair is common. Frost‑elf‑white is not.”

Lucas muttered, “It’ll buy us time.”

“Third, we change your name on paper.”

I stared at her. “MY NAME?!”

Charlie nodded like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“Yes. Your legal name. Your school records. Your ID. Everything. You said the devs knew your name already. They’ll be looking for someone named Kris who matches your male height, age, and build.”

Riley added, “And if your name and looks don’t match anymore, it throws off every search algorithm.”

Nate snapped his fingers. “It creates noise. False positives. They’ll waste time chasing the wrong people.”

Lucas’s voice was low. “It keeps you safe.”

I stared at them all.

At my friends.

At my sister.

At the people who were ready to rewrite my entire identity just to protect me.

“…Isn’t that extreme?” I whispered.

Charlie leaned forward, taking my hands in hers.

“Kris. You shoved a man through a dimensional tear. You fought an assassin with ice magic. You’re going viral worldwide. And you’re transforming faster than anyone else.”

Her voice softened.

“This isn’t extreme. This is necessary.”

Riley nodded. “People are scared. Governments are going to be on edge. The devs are silent. We don’t know who to trust.”

Nate added, “But we trust each other.”

My chest tightened. Not with fear. With something warm. Something steady.

Something like… safety.
