Reality overload

Walking down the left path. The air feeling like it was trying to suffocate me. Lingering frost clinging to the tips of my fingers from the last fight. The cave beginning to narrow slightly.

“Here we go again,” mentally preparing myself for another bout of claustrophobic shenanigans.

Coming into the tighter quarters I realized it wasn’t as bad as the previous area. Much more manageable, at least it wasn’t nightmare water‑fueled.

A shadow peeled itself off of the wall.

Moving like a wraith, silent, calculating.

Following from behind the intruder in its domain.

This meat smelled good.

Not like those filthy little creatures.

Foul meat, but kept it and its brethren living.

They would eat well soon.

The air behind me shifted, not enough to hear, not enough to see, but enough that something primal in my spine tightened. The tunnel felt smaller. The walls felt closer. My own heartbeat felt too loud, like it was announcing my position with every thud.

I took another step.

The shadow took one with me.

The frost on my fingertips flickered, reacting before I did, a tiny pulse of cold, like my magic sensed the danger a fraction of a second before my brain caught up.

Something was wrong.

Something was behind me.

And whatever it was…no there was more than one

I ran….Not caring about the sound any longer. I needed to get out of here. I was scared I’ll admit that. The caveman part of my brain telling me, demanding me to escape from here.

My boots slapped against stone, echoing like gunshots in the tight corridor. Every breath scraped my throat raw. The tunnel blurred into a smear of jagged rock and flickering shadows as I sprinted, half‑blind, half‑panicked.

Behind me —

Skittering.

Claws.

Wet, eager breathing.

More than one.

More than two.

A pack.

The frost on my fingers crawled up my wrist, reacting to my fear, my pulse, my desperation. I didn’t even try to control it. I just ran.

The tunnel forked. I didn’t try to think. I didn’t choose. My body just veered left, the sounds of skittering beginning to fade. I turned right at the next junction right, then down a sloping passage that felt too steep, too familiar.

“No.” My mind racing

“No, no, no.”

I recognized that slope.

I recognized the widening of the walls.

The faint smell of burnt hair and iron.

My lungs seized.

I had been here before.

I burst into the chamber and knew that I was well and truly screwed, as many beady eyes snapped in my direction. We stood there for a moment. Neither me nor the goblins reacted. Time standing still for a fraction of a moment, before it clicked back into motion

Everything exploded into chaos. They surged at me. My fear of the things chasing me and the horde of goblins in front making my heart skip a beat.

One leapt at me from the right, I ducked, barely, feeling its claws rake the air above my head. Another scrambled up my leg like a rabid squirrel, teeth snapping for my throat. I slammed my elbow down, knocking it loose, but three more replaced it instantly.

A goblin lunged for my arm. That one got a knife for its troubles, “poof”. Another grabbed my ankle. My balance wavered. The frost on my hands flared, reacting to the panic, crawling up my forearms in jagged, frantic patterns.

“OH..”

Was all I could manage, as I lost my footing, hitting the ground hard. Then they were on me. Their shrieks growing jubilantly at my blunder.

I felt a sharp pain in my lower back one came from the left jumping on to of me. Slashing across my left eye. A line of white hot pain running from my brow to the corner of my lips.

“AAARGGHH!!.”

I WONT LET YOUUUU!!!!! I yelled in defiance.

The pain was intense. More than I remembered from before. Vision going dark on that side. I gave the offending goblin a face full of ice. Flash freezing its head.

Poof…

That was all could do beforewas overtaken my fear started rising, my vision tunneling. As I was grabbed from every angle. Frost began to form up my arms and legs. Mist rising from my breath.

Then I saw it, its red glowing eyes that giant rusty cleaver, as it stepped out of the shadows.

“Use it little fragment..” something called to me in my stupor. My consciousness reaching out to latch onto it like a life line

Then it pulsed like a living breathing thing begging to be released. I was beginning to black out. The air around me began to freeze. Blizzard colds and biting. The fires and torches went out their flames flash frozen. Like crystal flowers. Ice creeping like silent death.

“Crrrrriiik….CRAACKLE… the sounds reverberated in the cave

“W-what’s happening.” my muddled brain trying to make sense of it. I blacked out as I felt myself rising off the ground, floating.

Outside the Game

The cave fades.

Chris lies inside his black pod, body still, breath slow, eyes moving rapidly beneath closed lids completely unaware of anything beyond the simulation. The pod’s soft blue interior lights cast a faint glow across the smooth glass lid sealed inches above his face.

Everything looks normal.

Almost.

Right in front of his face, directly on the glass, a thin, delicate patch of frost. A fragile bloom of crystalline white spreading in tiny branching veins, like winter trying to sketch itself onto the world. The ambient temperature gauge showing 3°C

He can’t feel it — he’s deep in the game, eyes flickering beneath closed lids.

A whisper of cold where no cold should be.

A quiet, impossible echo of the power he’s using in the simulation, pressing right up against the glass above him.

The frost lingers there, patient and silent, as if waiting for something.

—————-//////

Night pressed down on the forest canopy, silvering the leaves at the highest boughs. The forest floor below was swallowed in an eerie, ink‑black darkness as the four companions followed the same path they’d taken earlier that day.

Only now it felt different — unfamiliar, alien — as if night had redrawn the world.

Nate walked at the front, staff raised, a soft orb of light hovering above it. The glow pushed back the dark in a trembling halo of white. Their pace was brisk, almost urgent. Charlie kept pushing them forward, jaw tight, eyes fixed ahead.

She didn’t say it out loud, but everyone knew why.

“You do know we’re in a game, right… Char?”

Luke’s voice was gentle, the kind someone used when trying to coax a friend out of spiraling. He wore a half‑smile, trying to make it sound like a joke.

Charlie didn’t look back. “Yeah. I know.”

But her shoulders stayed tense.

Riley’s ears twitched. “Kris will be alright. He always is.”

“Exactly,” Nate added from the front. “This is Kris we’re talking about. Rhyll’s got a point. He may be an airhead, a dunce, a complete—”

Whack.

Charlie’s hand snapped out and smacked the back of his head before he could finish. Nate stumbled, the light flickering wildly for a moment.

“Ow— hey!” he hissed, rubbing the spot. “What was that for?”

Charlie finally looked up, eyes sharp but voice tight. “For calling him a dunce right now.”

Nate blinked, then softened. “Right. Fair.”

Luke stepped closer to her, lowering his voice. “We’ll find him.”

Riley nodded, offering a small smile. “And when we do, you can smack him too.”

That earned the tiniest huff of a laugh from Charlie — barely there, but real.

The forest remained silent around them, the only sound the crunch of leaves underfoot and the critters of the night.

BRRRRRSHHHAAAAAA!!!!”

Everyone stopped looking in the direction of the cave. The noise thunderous as birds and other creatures.fleeing in the echoing wake of the noise. Charlie took off in the direction of the caves.

”Charlie… Hey wait up. The were close on her heels.

She didn’t know what to expect but the feeling in her chest told her something was wrong.

The trees became a blur in the darkness, but she didn’t care she needed to get to Kris.

Not long after the burst into the clearing the cliff face lit with moonlight. Pale and towering. And frozen!?!.

“ What!! “ Charlie’s breath caught as the other three caught up. Their eyes going wide in awe, at the sight. Like a window into a frozen waste land. The cave like an ice cave in the side of a glacier, smooth and solid white with ice and frost.

The moment they stepped past the cave mouth, the temperature dropped.

Not a gentle chill, a knife‑edge cold that bit straight through their clothes and crawled up their spines. Nate’s light flickered as if the magic itself shivered.

Charlie stopped first.

Her breath caught.

The cave was unrecognizable.

Ice coated everything, the walls, the ceiling, the floor, thick and glassy, like the entire cavern had been flash‑frozen in an instant. Frost clung to every surface in jagged, crystalline patterns, glittering in Nate’s pale light.

It looked less like a cave and more like a tomb.

Luke whispered, “What… happened in here?”

His voice echoed strangely, bouncing off the frozen surfaces with a hollow, brittle ring.

Riley stepped forward, ears pinned back. “This wasn’t here earlier. Not even close.”

Nate swallowed hard. “This is Kris’s magic. It has to be.”

Charlie didn’t answer.

She was already moving.

Her boots crunched over the frost‑covered stone, each step echoing too loudly in the dead‑silent cavern. The others followed, staying close, their breath forming white clouds in the frigid air.

As they rounded the bend deeper inside, the frozen shapes came into view.

Goblins…, dozens of them locked in place mid‑lunge, mid‑snarl, mid‑scramble.

Frozen solid.

Encased in ice like grotesque statues.

Some clung to the walls.

Some lay sprawled across the floor.

Some in pieces, caught mid‑drop, shattered as they hit the floor.

Luke exhaled shakily. “She did all this… alone?”

Riley whispered, “where’s Kris though, I don’t see her anywhere.”

Nate’s light dimmed again, reacting to the cold. “We need to find her. Now.”

Charlie didn’t wait.

She pushed past a cluster of frozen goblins, brushing frost off her sleeve, and stepped into the chamber at the heart of the cave.

Her breath hitched.

There, in the center of the devastation, stood Kris.

She was surrounded by a ring of shattered frost, steam rising faintly from her skin as if her body couldn’t decide whether it was freezing or thawing. Her hands hung at her sides, fingertips still glowing with the last traces of ice magic. Her eyes were unfocused, distant, like she was halfway between here and somewhere else entirely.

Charlie’s voice cracked. “Kris…?” Confusion as she saw her white hair and ice blue eyes. Like an ice sculpture.

She didn’t move.

Didn’t blink.

Didn’t even seem to hear her.

The others stepped in behind Charlie, stunned into silence.

The cave was a frozen battlefield.

And Kris stood at the center of it like the eye of a storm that had finally burned itself out.

Charlie took a trembling step forward.

“Kris… we’re here.”

Kris looked like she’d been through a war.

Battered. Bruised. Missing a boot.

Barely standing, and only because she hadn’t realized she was allowed to fall yet.

“KRIS?!” Charlie’s voice cracked, sharp with fear she’d been holding in for too long.

The shout made me lift my head. My vision blurred at the edges, frost clinging to my clothes and skin. Every movement felt stiff, heavy, like the ice had seeped into my bones.

“H‑hey, sis…” I managed, lifting a shaky hand in a half‑hearted wave. The smile I tried for came out crooked and exhausted.

My knees gave out before I even realized I was sinking. I dropped into a clumsy crouch, legs folding under me. My hair, now stark white, stuck to my face, matted with grime, dried blood, and frozen sweat.

Before I could say anything else, warmth crashed into me.

Charlie.

She wrapped her arms around me so suddenly I almost toppled over. The heat of her body hit me like a shock, thawing something inside me I didn’t know had frozen.

“Oww.. sis easy”

“T‑thank god you’re okay…”

Her voice was tight, trembling, the same voice she’d used the day she told me our parents were gone.

The voice of someone holding themselves together by threads.

My throat closed.

“I… I killed the boss,” I whispered, the words barely making it out. “I did it. I—”

My breath hitched.

Hot tears spilled down my cheeks before I even understood why.

“Eh…? Why— why am I crying…?” My voice cracked, thin and confused. “I don’t… I don’t know why—”

Charlie pulled me closer, one hand cradling the back of my head, the other gripping my shoulder like she was afraid I’d disappear if she let go.

“Shhh. I’m here,” she murmured.

And that was it.

Those three words were the key.

The lock.

The floodgate.

Everything I’d been holding back , the fear, the pain, the loneliness, the terror of dying again, all of it broke loose. Fresh tears slid down my face, hot enough to sting against the cold.

I buried my face in her shoulder and sobbed, the sound small and shaking.

Charlie held me tighter.

“I’ve got you,” she whispered. “You’re safe now.”

And for the first time since the cave swallowed me whole…

I believed her.
