Reality overload

The campus had slipped into that soft evening lull where everyone retreated to their rooms, screens glowing behind half‑closed blinds. The walkways were nearly empty. The air felt cooler now that the sun was sinking behind the trees.

Riley stretched her arms over her head.

”Food. Please. I am dying.”

Reia laughed. ”You get hungry a lot huh.”

I smiled, but it didn’t reach my eyes.

Something in the air felt... wrong, heavy like the wold taking a deep breath.

The lamps lining the path flickered on one by one, casting long shadows across the grass. Each shadow felt too long. Too sharp. Too aware.

A prickle crawled up my arms.

My frost stirred beneath my skin like a creature waking.

Riley noticed first.

She grabbed my arm.

”Hey. You good?”

Reia stopped walking.

Her head snapped toward the rooftops, eyes narrowing like she’d heard something I hadn’t.

I swallowed.

”I feel like something’s happen-.”

The words barely left my mouth before the world shifted.

A ripple of magic swept across the campus.

Silent.

Invisible.

But it hit me like a tidal wave.

Students in their rooms gasped.

Some shivered.

Some didn’t react at all.

Riley’s eyes when wide, Reia flinched hard looking around.

My knees buckled.

I hit the grass hard.

Frost burst outward from me in a perfect circle, blooming across the ground like ice flowers under moonlight.

Something inside me reacted violently.

A warm light filled my chest, too bright, too hot, too alive.

My frost turned gold.

My heartbeat thudded like a bell, deep and resonant, shaking the air around me.

”AAAAHHH...” I wailed feeling like every nerve ending lit up inside me all at once.

Riley dropped beside me, pulling me into her arms.

”Zora! Zora....Hey...Stay with me.”

Reia pressed a hand to my back, voice trembling.

”What is happening to her?”

I couldn’t answer.

My vision blurred.

The world dimmed.

My breath caught in my throat.

Then the light shifted.

Hestia appeared.

A silhouette of fire and warmth.

A hand on my cheek, impossibly gentle.

”You must control it, daughter you must! I cannot help you this time!”

The vision shattered.

The warmth faded.

The frost dimmed.

It pushed upward, flooding my chest, my throat, my vision.

”Okay.” I squeezed out.

I tried to feel it like trying to catch air. Then I felt a spark white hot but there. And I reached for it.

I tried to pull it back, tried to cage it tried to control it. but it was slipping through my grip like water turning to steam.

”Stop,” I begged under my breath, pressing a hand to my sternum.

”Please... not now.”

The ground beneath my knees frosted over anyway.

I squeezed my eyes shut and dragged in a breath, trying to anchor myself to anything. Riley’s hand on my arm, the cool stone under my fingers, the sound of Reia shifting beside me.

But it didn’t listen.

It roared.

My heartbeat thundered in my ears, too loud, too bright, echoing like a bell struck by a god.

I tried to breathe through it, tried to slow it, tried to force the frost back down into my bones.

For a moment...just a moment it worked.

The frost hesitated.

Wavered.

Shivered like it wasn’t sure.

I pushed harder, teeth gritted, sweat mixing with cold on my skin.

”Come on,” I whispered to myself. ”Control it. Control it.”

But the warmth in my chest ignited again—gold, blinding, unstoppable.

And I lost my grip.

My magic exploded outward in a silent, invisible wave. a pulse that rippled through the ground, the air, the sky. I felt it leave me like a heartbeat turned inside out.

For a terrifying second, I thought I’d lost control completely.

But then...

I grabbed it.

Instinct.

Reflex.

Or something deeper. I couldn’t say which.

My mind closed around the surge, not physically, but in that strange inner space where my frost lived. And the moment I touched it, something clicked.

Like a puzzle piece sliding into place.

Like a lock turning.

Like I’d been walking around with a missing part of myself and only now realized it.

The magic settled.

Not gone.

Not suppressed.

Just... aligned.

My eyes snapped open.

Everything looked different.

The world sharpened, colors bending at the edges like starlight refracting through glass. I felt the sky. The ground. The pulse of mana under the campus like a second heartbeat.

Riley sucked in a breath beside me.

”Zora...your eyes...”

I blinked, and for a moment I saw it reflected in her pupils, something cosmic, vast, ancient, swirling in my irises like galaxies waking up.

Then it faded.

The glow dimmed.

The world returned to normal.

But I didn’t. I reassured them. I...I’m fine. I think it’s over.”

Something inside me had changed.

Settled.

Awakened.

And I could still feel the magic humming under my skin, waiting.

I gasped for air and clutched Riley’s shirt, shaking.

”Zora your eyes they changed.” Riley said grabbing my face. ”They were like outer spacy, but now they are like ice...”

Something sharp and cold pressed against the back of my mind, like a fingertip tracing my spine.

Riley helped me sit up.

Reia stood abruptly and scanned the rooftops, her posture rigid.

I followed her gaze.

Nothing.

Just rooftops.

Just shadows.

Just the wind.

But I felt it.

Someone was up there.

My breath hitched.

I grabbed Riley’s wrist without meaning to.

”Zora?” she whispered.

I didn’t answer.

Because whoever was watching...

They weren’t guessing.

They knew.

They knew the frost I had.

They knew what the surge was.

They knew me.

——————-

Vincent crouched on the rooftop, visor dimmed, watching the frost ripple across the quad below.

The ping hit his display again, sharp and insistent.

PRIORITY ALERT

FROST SIGNATURE DETECTED

MATCHING DNA TARGET: KRIS

REPORT IMMEDIATELY

Cross would be frothing at the mouth right now.

He’d been spiraling for days. pacing, shouting, tearing through files, demanding updates every hour.

Obsessed.

Panicked.

Convinced Kris was slipping through his fingers.

Vincent had never seen him like that.

Not until the tear opened.

Not until the man fell through.

Not until Cross grabbed him afterward, eyes wild, voice cracking.

Cross wasn’t hunting a threat anymore.

He was hunting a fear.

And now Vincent was staring down at a girl in the grass, trembling, frost blooming around her like a heartbeat, eyes flashing cosmic for a moment before fading.

His visor insisted it was Kris.

Cross would find out eventually.

But Vincent...

Vincent saw something else.

He zoomed in.

Her hands were shaking.

Her breath was uneven.

She looked like she was trying not to fall apart.

Not a monster.

Not a weapon.

Not the apocalypse Cross was screaming about.

Hestia’s voice echoed in his head, soft but unshakeable

”You are fighting on the wrong side.”

He hadn’t wanted to believe her.

He’d told himself gods lied.

He’d told himself Cross knew what he was doing.

It memory hit Vincent like a punch, slamming into him as he watched the girls frost bloom across the quad below.

Cross’s voice.

Cross’s hands.

Cross’s rage.

It all came back.

The tear had snapped shut with a sound like the world being zipped closed.

The man had fallen through, unconscious, helpless, and Vincent had reached for him, but the pull was too strong.

And then Hestia appeared.

Fire‑bright.

Ancient.

Unshakably calm.

She had looked him in the eyes and said.

”You are fighting on the wrong side.”

He hadn’t known what to do with that.

He still didn’t.

But Cross gave him no time to think.

When he went to report, the door slammed open so hard it bounced off the wall.

Cross stormed in, coat half‑on, hair wild, eyes bloodshot with panic.

He didn’t ask what happened.

He grabbed Vincent by the front of his jacket and slammed him into the nearest console hard enough to rattle the screens.

”You FAILED!” Cross roared, spit hitting Vincent’s cheek. ”You let him FALL THROUGH!”

Vincent’s breath caught.

”I tried—”

”DON’T!” Cross slammed him again. ”DON’T feed me excuses!”

His fist hit the console beside Vincent’s head, cracking the screen.

”You should have dragged him out! You should have stopped it! YOU SHOULD HAVE ALREADY CAPTURED KRIS!”

Vincent froze.

”Kris wasn’t even—”

Cross’s hand shot up and grabbed Vincent’s throat, choking him.

”Don’t you DARE say his name to me,” Cross hissed, voice shaking. ”Don’t you dare pretend you understand what he is.”

Vincent stared at him.

This wasn’t the commander he knew.

This wasn’t strategy.

This wasn’t control.

This was fear.

Real, bone‑deep fear.

Cross shoved him back, pacing like a man unraveling.

”That man was KEY,” Cross spat. ”KEY to figuring it out. Proof she’s rewriting the rules. And you let him slip through your fingers like a CHILD!!”

Vincent clenched his jaw.

”He was unconscious. The tear—”

Cross spun on him, eyes wild.

”You think I CARE about physics? About magic? About what’s ’possible’?”

He jabbed a finger into Vincent’s chest.

”Kris is out there. people are CHANGING! Turning into their avatars. Breaking the world. And you FAILED to catch her.”

Vincent swallowed hard.

Cross leaned in, voice dropping to a venomous whisper.

”If you fail me again... I’ll make sure you disappear right along with her.”

Vincent didn’t flinch.

But something inside him cracked.

Watching her tremble in the courtyard now frost blooming around her, eyes flashing cosmic for a heartbeat, Vincent felt the truth hit him like a blow.

This wasn’t a threat.

This wasn’t the monster Cross was screaming about.

This was a kid.

A scared kid.

And Cross would destroy her without blinking.

Hestia’s voice echoed in his head.

”You are fighting on the wrong side.”

For the first time, Vincent believed her.

But looking at Zora now...

He felt something twist in his chest.

This was Kris he was sure. But this kid.. This girl wasn’t a threat.

This was someone caught in the crossfire of Cross’s obsession.

His visor chimed again.

REPORT REQUIRED

REPORT REQUIRED

Vincent closed the alert.

Not reported.

Not when Cross would descend like a storm and drag her away.

Not when Cross would scream that she was a threat to the world.

Not when Vincent knew...knew...that wasn’t true.

He tapped a private marker...encrypted, off‑grid, invisible to Cross.

A lock‑on only he could see.

”I’m not letting him take her,” he muttered. ”Not when she’s just a kid.”

He stood, cloak shifting in the wind.

This time, he wasn’t following orders.

He was following his conscience.
