SUPRISE!!! Extra chapter enjoy it’s a long one

The room was finally quiet. Ice blasted but quiet. The frost had stopped spreading.

My breathing had steadied. Charlie sat beside me on the floor, her arms still around me like she was afraid I’d disappear if she let go.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

She pulled back just enough to look at me. Her eyes were red, her cheeks wet, her voice barely holding together.

”Zora...” she whispered. ”I need to say something. And I need you to hear all of it.”

I swallowed, nodding weakly.

She took a shaky breath.

”I’m sorry,” she said. ”For everything. For the teasing. For pushing you. For treating you like you were fragile. For thinking I knew what you needed better than you did.”

Her voice cracked.

”I thought I was helping. I thought I was being a good big sister. But I wasn’t listening. I wasn’t seeing you. I was being selfish.”

My chest tightened.

Charlie wiped her eyes with the heel of her hand, frustrated with herself.

”I should’ve asked how you felt. I should’ve noticed you were hurting. I should’ve been there instead of making jokes or brushing things off. I’m so sorry, Zora. I’m so sorry.”

Her voice broke completely.

”I never wanted to be the person who made you feel small.”

I felt something warm bloom in my chest.

”Charlie...” My voice was soft, tired. ”I forgive you.”

Her breath hitched, like she hadn’t expected that.

”I know you were trying,” I whispered. ”And I know you love me. That’s enough.”

Charlie let out a shaky, ”I should have never sent you by yourself. If I had just went with you...”

Charlie kept rubbing her hands together, eyes fixed on the floor like she couldn’t stand to look at me. ”I sent you out there,” she muttered. ”I told you to go get the dye. If I hadn’t, if I’d just gone myself those scumbags never would’ve touched you.”

I stepped closer. ”Charlie...stop.”

She shook her head. ”No. I should’ve protected you. I should’ve been there. I should’ve—”

”You didn’t do anything wrong,” I said, firmer this time. ”You didn’t know. You couldn’t have known. And what happened wasn’t because of you.”

Charlie finally looked up, guilt still clinging to her expression.

I held her gaze. ”I’m not blaming you. I never did. You didn’t fail me. You helped me. You’re helping me right now.”

Her shoulders loosened just a little, like the words finally reached her.

Charlie swallowed, the guilt softening into something steadier.

”I’m still here,” I said quietly. ”And that’s not because you failed. It’s because you didn’t.”

Charlie finally started to breathe normally again, the guilt loosening its grip. But I wasn’t done. Not with her, and not with myself.

”I’m going to be more careful,” I said quietly. ”I get that now. I can’t just wander around alone like nothing’s changed.”

”And I’m going to be more careful,” I added. ”I’m not pretending the world is safe anymore. I get it now. I understand what can happen when girls are alone.”

Charlie nodded, still watching me closely.

”But that’s not enough,” I added, voice tightening with something sharper. ”I’m not just going to avoid danger. I’m going to be ready for it.”

Her eyebrows lifted.

”I mean learning how to use my powers on purpose. I’m not freezing again. I’m not letting anyone corner me again. If something like that ever happens, I want to be able to end it.” my face set in determination.

A thin frost curled across my fingertips — controlled this time.

”I’m going to get stronger,” I said. ”Strong enough that nobody gets to scare me like that again.”

Charlie stared at me for a long moment, then nodded once — slow, serious, proud.

”Then we’ll make you stronger,” she said. ”Whatever it takes, we’ll all get stronger.”

She reached up to brush a tear from my cheek.

And then it happened.

A soft warmth bloomed under her fingertips — gentle, golden, impossible.

My skin tingled. The ache in my cheek slowly faded, and tightness in my wrist loosened.

Charlie jerked her hand back like she’d touched a live wire.

”Oh my God— did I—?”

I touched my cheek. Smooth. Whole. Warm.

”You healed me,” I said awed.

Charlie stared at her own hand, dumbstruck , and amazed all at once. ”I didn’t mean to. I just— I didn’t want you to hurt anymore and—”

Before she could finish, footsteps pounded up the stairs — fast, uneven, like someone who’d been holding themselves back for too long.

The door swung open.

Riley stood there, breathless, eyes already full of tears. The moment she saw me, the exhaustion on my face, she broke.

”Oh, Zora...” she whispered, her voice cracking.

She crossed the room in three steps and wrapped her arms around me, pulling me into a tight, trembling hug.

”I’m sorry,” she cried into my shoulder. ”I’m so sorry. I should’ve been there. I heard everything. I should’ve stopped teasing you. I didn’t know you were hurting like that.”

I hugged her back, tired but steady. ”It’s okay. I know you didn’t mean to.”

Riley sobbed once, then pulled back just enough to look at me.

”Are you... are you okay now?”

I shook my head.

”I... I want a shower,” I said quietly. ”I need to wash this feeling off me. I need to feel clean again.”

Charlie helped me sit on the edge of the bed, her hand warm on my back. My breathing had finally steadied, She stood slowly, brushing her palms on her jeans like she needed something to do with her hands.

”I’ll... I’ll grab you something to wear,” she said softly. ”Your old clothes are still in the drawer. I’ll get you a shirt and—”

”No.”

The word came out before I even thought about it.

Charlie paused, halfway to the dresser.

I swallowed, my voice small but steady. ”Not those. Please. I said I’d try and I want to try... being Zora.”

Her expression softened instantly. She nodded once, then turned to her own dresser instead. She opened the drawers carefully, like she was afraid of choosing wrong.

”Okay,” she murmured. ”Something different. Something that feels like you.”

She sifted through folded stacks until her hand paused on something soft. She pulled out a pastel striped shirt, gentle colors, soft fabric, the kind of thing that felt like a sunrise. Then she found a pair of pink shorts, loose and comfortable.

She held them up, her voice quiet. ”These... do these look ok?”

”Yeah,” I smiled. ”They do.”

Charlie stepped closer, offering them to me with both hands like they were something fragile.

But then she hesitated.

Her eyes flicked toward the bottom drawer — the one she’d been avoiding. She bit her lip, nervous in a way I rarely saw.

”Zora... there’s, um... one more thing.” She opened the drawer and pulled out a soft, pale bra — simple, nothing fancy. ”I found this earlier. I think it might fit you.”

My breath caught.

”If you don’t want it, that’s completely okay,” she added quickly. ”I just... wanted you to have the option.”

I reached out and took it gently.

”Thank you,” I said cheeks frosting slightly.

Charlie smiled — small, warm, proud. ”Of course.”

My stomach twisted.

I needed to tell her.

I really need to tell her.

I cleared my throat. ”Hey... can I talk to Charlie alone?”

Riley blinked. ”Oh. Yeah. Sure.”

She hopped off the bed and headed for the door. ”I’ll be in the hall. Don’t summon demons.”

Charlie pointed. ”Go.”

Riley slipped out and closed the door.

Charlie turned to me immediately. ”Alright. What’s wrong?”

I swallowed. My cheeks frosted with nerves, and embarrassment. ”It finally happened.”

Charlie’s posture shifted. ”The transformation?”

I nodded. ”When...when I walked in the door.”

She came over and sat beside me, not too close. ”Okay. What part?”

I stared at my hands.

Then I said it the only way I could.

”There’s... a pit where the dragon used to sleep.”

Charlie blinked. ”What?”

I swallowed. ”I mean—”

I forced myself to look at her.

”It’s gone. The... the dragon. The whole thing. There’s nothing there anymore.”

Charlie stared at me, confused for half a second — then the meaning hit her like a truck.

Her eyes widened.

”Wait—” she said, voice cracking just a little. ”You’re saying— you— you don’t—”

”Yeah,” I said. ”It’s gone. Completely. I... have uuh....girl parts now.” I felt like I was turning into an ice cube.

Charlie didn’t move.

She didn’t breathe.

She just stared at me like her brain had slammed into a wall.

”Hold on,” she said, voice low, stunned. ”Hold on. That fast? Already? I thought— I thought it would take weeks. Months. Something.”

I nodded. ”I thought so too.”

Charlie ran a hand through her hair, pacing a few steps like she needed to physically walk the shock out of her body.

”Jesus, Zora,” she muttered. ”I knew it was happening. I knew the magic was changing you. But I didn’t think— I didn’t think it would just—”

She gestured vaguely at my whole lower half.

”—be DONE.”

I swallowed. ”Yeah, it would seem with the world transforming now, it might have sped up the process.

She stopped pacing and stared at me again — really stared — like she was seeing the meltdown earlier in a completely new light.

”That’s why you broke down,” she said quietly. ”That’s why you freaked out so hard. That’s why you grabbed the name Zora like it was oxygen.”

I nodded. ”Yeah....Part of it.”

Charlie let out a long, shaky breath

”You were my brother yesterday,” she said, voice soft but rattled.

”I know.”

”And now you’re... my sister. Completely?Physically?”

”There’s no doubt.”

Charlie sat down again, slower this time, like her legs weren’t totally steady.

”Okay,” she said, rubbing her face. ”Okay. I’m just— holy crap, Zora. That’s a LOT.”

I let out a shaky breath. ”I didn’t know how to say it.”

”Well,” she said, exhaling hard, ”you definitely said it.”

She pointed at me

”And for the record? Don’t use that metaphor ever again. Regardless, we’ll figure this out together.”

She stopped pacing and looked at me.

”Okay,” she said slowly. ”I need to ask you something.”

My stomach tightened. ”What?”

Charlie hesitated, and Charlie never hesitated unless something mattered.

”Is it okay if I tell Riley?”

I froze.

Not because I didn’t trust Riley.

But because saying yes meant it was real.

Permanent, and out loud.

Charlie saw the hesitation immediately and softened — not mushy, just less sharp.

”You don’t have to say yes,” she said. ”I won’t tell her without your permission. But she’s gonna know something’s up. And she’s... Riley. She’s not subtle.”

I let out a slow breath.

She was right. Riley wasn’t subtle.

And we were about to live in the same dorm room. She’d find out sooner or later — probably sooner, knowing her.

I rubbed my face. ”I... yeah. I know. She’s gonna figure it out.”

Charlie nodded, still watching me carefully. ”So... is it okay?”

I hesitated one more second — the last little bit of fear clinging to my ribs.

Then I nodded. ”Yeah. It’s okay. You can tell her.”

Charlie blinked, surprised. ”You’re sure?”

”Yeah,” I said. ”She deserves to know. And I don’t want to hide it from her. Not if we’re gonna be sharing a room.”

Charlie let out a breath she’d been holding. ”Alright. I’ll tell her. Gently. Or... as gently as I can.”

I snorted. ”Please don’t use the dragon metaphor.”

Charlie made a face. ”Zora, I’m not saying that sentence out loud to another human being.”

Charlie walked to the door opening it. ”You can come back Riley. We’re done.”

”Are you two done being cryptic? I’m literally dying of boredom.”

Charlie looked at me one last time — checking, confirming.

I nodded.

Riley walked in. ”Sooo... what’s the verdict?”

Charlie swallowed, still visibly shaken but steady.

”Riley,” she said, ”we need to talk.”

Riley’s eyes widened.

She pointed at Riley. ”Sit.”

Riley blinked. ”Why?”

”Because I said so.”

Riley sat on the bed immediately, hands in her lap like she was about to be scolded by a teacher.

Charlie paced once.

Twice.

Stopped.

Started again.

”Oh no,” Riley whispered. ”She’s doing the pacing thing.”

Charlie held up a finger. ”I’m thinking.”

”You pace when you’re panicking,” Riley said.

”I’m thinking,” Charlie repeated, voice cracking slightly.

I sat on the edge of the bed, bracing myself. Charlie finally stopped pacing and faced Riley head‑on.

”Okay. So. You know how Kris is Zora now.”

Riley nodded slowly. ”Yes...?”

”And you know the magic changed her.”

”Right...”

Charlie inhaled like she was about to dive underwater. Then she blurted everything out in one breath

”THE-DRAGON-IS-GONE-AND-THERE’S-A-PIT-NOW.”

I lost it, bursting out laughing. My eyes tearing up. ” C-Charlie hahahaha!”

Riley stared. ”What?”

Charlie’s face went cherry red. ”Stop laughing you cretan! I said that wrong.”

”You think?” I said. ”I thought you wouldn’t say it Charlie!!” My laughter finally subsiding to low giggles.

Charlie rolled her eyes at me hey face crimson, and tried again, hands flailing like she was conducting an orchestra of panic.

”Okay, okay, okay— listen. Kris was my brother yesterday. And now she’s my sister. Like... fully. Physically. Completely. The magic didn’t just do the hair and the ice and the glowing. It did the— the— the downstairs stuff too. Fast. Like stupid fast. Like I thought we had months and instead we had, like, forty eight hours.”

Riley blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then she turned to me.

”Zora... is that true?”

I nodded, cheeks cooling. ”Yeah.”

Riley’s eyes widened in pure, stunned surprise.

”Oh my god,” she whispered. ”No wonder you broke down. No wonder you were freaking out. That’s— that’s huge.”

Charlie pointed at her aggressively. ”THANK YOU. That’s what I said. I’m still processing. I’m gonna be processing for, like, a week.”

Riley looked between us, then scooted closer to me on the bed.

”Zora... are you okay?”

I nodded. ”Better now.”

Riley let out a breath she’d been holding. ”Okay. Okay. Good. Because I was about to start crying and I don’t want to cry before bed.”

Charlie groaned. ”Please don’t cry. I can’t handle more emotions today.”

Riley wiped her eyes anyway. ”I’m not crying. I’m just... leaking.”

Charlie threw her hands up. ”Now you’re gonna make me cry Riley.”

Riley sniffed, then looked at me again — softer this time.

”Thank you for letting me know,” she said. ”And... I’m here. Whatever you need roomies for life!”

Charlie nodded, still visibly rattled. ”Same. Even if I’m... you know... shocked.”

Riley elbowed her. ”You? Shocked? Nooo.”

Charlie glared. ”Shut up.”

And just like that, the tension dropped.

”I’m gonna take that shower now,” I murmured.

Charlie squeezed my shoulder. ”We’ll be right outside.”

Riley nodded, wiping her eyes. ”If you need anything... anything at all...”

I managed a small nod picking up the clothe Charlie had given me, and stepped into the bathroom, closing the door behind me. The soft click of the door felt different this time, not like shutting the world out, but like giving myself a moment to breathe.

The bathroom light flickered on, warm and soft. I turned on the shower, letting the water run hot. The sound alone made my shoulders sag. I peeled off the clothes I’d been wearing. They still felt tainted by fear, by his hands, by the way I froze.

When I stepped under the water, it hit me like a blanket.

I let it run over me, washing away the grime, the sweat, the dried tears. My hands moved on their own, tracing over skin that felt... different. Softer. Smoother. Curved in places that hadn’t been curved before. Flat in places that used to be familiar.

But the strangest part was that I didn’t panic.

Not this time.

Like my mind wasn’t fighting me anymore.

Like it was finally mine.

When I finished, I wrapped myself in a towel and wiped the fog from the mirror with a trembling hand.

I was still staring at the fogged‑up mirror when the door cracked open just enough for Charlie to slip her hand inside. Something soft and folded dangled from her fingers.

”I, uh...” she cleared her throat, sounding more awkward than I’d ever heard her. ”You’re gonna need these.”

I froze.

Panties.

A simple cotton pair.

Nothing fancy.

But my entire face went frosty.

Charlie didn’t come in — she just kept her arm through the doorway like she was delivering a hostage negotiation item. ”I didn’t know what style you’d want, so I grabbed the softest ones. They’re... comfortable. They are new as well. And they won’t, you know... ride up. Probably.”

I covered my face with one hand. ”Charlie...”

”What?” she said, voice cracking. ”You need them. I’m being helpful.”

”You’re being loud,” I muttered.

”I’m being PRACTICAL,” she insisted, still refusing to step inside. ”Just take them before Riley tries to pick a pair. She grabbed a thong earlier and I almost threw her out the window.”

My soul left my body.

I snatched the panties from her hand and shut the door before she could say anything else. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my fingertips. I stared down at the soft fabric in my hands, cheeks burning, frost creeping across my knuckles.

Charlie had been right. I did need them.

But hearing her say it — hearing her know — made everything feel real in a way nothing else had. I had to psyche myself up.

”Ok... ok, I can do this...it’s just clothes nothing strange about it.”

I turned away from the mirror, took a breath, and stepped into them slowly. Carefully. Awkwardly. The fabric slid up my legs, settling in a way that felt strange and new and terrifyingly normal all at once. When they were finally on, I just stood there, towel still around my shoulders, breathing like I’d just run a marathon.

They fit.

They felt....Different than what I was used to

Outside the door, Charlie and Riley were already bickering again.

”Charlie, you didn’t have to slam the door in my face!”

”You tried to hand her a thong, Riley!”

”It was cute!”

”She’s not ready for cute!”

Their voices blended into a familiar, chaotic comfort.

I looked down at myself — at the soft cotton sitting on my hips — and whispered,

”Round two, okay. I can do this.”

I picked up the soft bra Charlie had given me. It looked simple enough... until I actually tried to put it on.

I slipped my arms through the straps, reached behind me for the clasp — and immediately got stuck. My elbows bent at angles that felt illegal. The hooks refused to line up. The towel slipped. My shoulder cramped.

”Seriously?” I muttered.

I tried another approach— clasping it in front, twisting it around — but I twisted it the wrong way. Twice. Then the straps tangled. Then I somehow got one arm through both straps at once.

I groaned, burying my face in my hands.

”I can’t do this...”

Finally, I cracked the door open an inch.

”Charlie...?” My voice cracked embarrassingly. ”Can you... help?”

She appeared instantly, like she’d been waiting right outside.

”Of course, Can I come in?”

I nodded, pulling the towel tighter around myself. She slipped inside and closed the door gently behind her.

”I figured you might need a hand,” she said.

”I’ve never... I don’t know how to put it on,” I admitted, cheeks burning.

”That’s okay,” she said warmly. ”Everyone learns.”

She showed me slowly, step by step — clasp in front, twist around, adjust the straps. And when the fabric finally settled against my skin, snug and supportive, something inside me loosened.

It felt... right.

Charlie smiled softly. ”There you go. Looks perfect.”

When she stepped out, I slipped into the pastel striped shirt and pink shorts she’d picked. The fabric was soft, gentle, comforting. I took a breath, wiped the last bit of fog from the mirror...

And looked.

Really looked.

The girl staring back at me wasn’t Kris.

She wasn’t halfway.

She wasn’t a glitch or a mistake or something unfinished.

She was Zora.

My hair — white and soft — framed my face in gentle waves. ”I should ask Charlie to help me dye it.”

My eyes looked bigger somehow, brighter, even though they were still red from crying.

My cheek, the one Charlie healed was smooth and unmarked.

My jaw was softer.

My lips fuller.

My whole face... mine, but in a new way.

A small, shaky smile tugged at my lips.

”I’m Zora,” I whispered. ”I’m really... Zora.”

And the girl in the mirror smiled back.

The steam drifted out behind me as I stepped out of the bathroom, towel wrapped around my shoulders, my hair still dripping. Charlie and Riley were waiting in the hallway, leaning against the wall and talking quietly.

When they saw me, they both went still.

Riley’s eyes widened.

Charlie’s breath caught.

My hair clung to my cheeks like strands of snow.

I swallowed. ”So... how do I look?”

Charlie stepped closer, her expression soft and careful. ”Like someone who’s been through hell... but is still standing.”

Riley nodded. ”You look like Zora. Just... Zora with anime hair.”

I snorted. ”Yeah. That’s why I want to fix it.”

Charlie’s eyes smiled. She already knew what I meant. She’d been waiting for me to say it.

”You want your original color back,” she said gently.

I nodded. ”Yeah. You had me buy the dye for a reason. If the devs are tracking appearances after that video... I need to change it.”

Charlie squeezed my arm. ”Then let’s do it.”

Riley, who had been hovering like a caffeinated hummingbird, gasped dramatically.

”WAIT—YOU MEAN WE’RE DOING IT NOW? LIKE RIGHT NOW?!”

Charlie sighed. ”Yes, Riley. Now.”

Riley didn’t even let her finish. She spun around and bolted down the stairs so fast she nearly wiped out on the landing.

”NATE! GIVE ME THE BOX! NO, NOT THAT ONE—THE ONE ZORA BOUGHT—YES, THE ONE LABELED ’DYE’—NATE, STOP ASKING QUESTIONS AND HAND IT OVER!”

Charlie pinched the bridge of her nose. ”She’s impossible.”

I laughed — soft, breathy. ”She’s excited.”

”She loves you,” Charlie said simply. ”We all do.”

Riley thundered back up the stairs, triumphant, holding the two dye boxs over her head like she’d just retrieved a sacred artifact.

”I GOT IT! THE OG COLOR IS BACK IN BUSINESS!”

Charlie snatched it from her hands before she could drop it. ”Thank you, Riley. Please sit down before you hurt yourself.”

Riley plopped onto the floor immediately.

Charlie moved with purpose — calm, steady, big‑sister mode fully activated. She grabbed the plastic sheet she’d set aside earlier and spread it over the toilet lid.

”Sit,” she said softly.

I sat.

She draped a towel around my neck, tucking it carefully so no dye would drip onto my new clothes. Riley hopped onto the edge of the bathtub, legs swinging, calmer now but still buzzing with quiet excitement.

Charlie snapped on the rubber gloves with a soft pop.

”Good thing you bought two boxes,” she said, eyeing my long hair. ”You’ve got a lot of it now”

Riley nodded vigorously. ”Like, a LOT. It’s like a whole forest.”

”Riley,” Charlie warned.

”What? It’s a compliment.”

I laughed — a small sound that made both of them smile.

Charlie opened the first box, mixing the dye with practiced hands. ”Okay, Ready?”

I took a breath. ”Yeah. I’m ready.”

Charlie dipped the brush into the bowl and touched it to my hair. The coolness made me shiver, but her hand was steady, and gentle.

”You okay?” she asked.

”Yeah,” I said. ”It feels... nice.”

Riley leaned forward, chin on her knees. ”It’s kinda wild seeing your hair white like that. to bad you can’t keep it.”

Charlie rolled her eyes. ”She doesn’t need to be magical. She just needs to be Zora.”

My chest tightened in a wierd way.

Charlie worked through each section, brushing the dye in with slow, careful strokes. She hummed under her breath — the same soft tune she used to hum when she brushed my hair before school when we were little, and mom wasn’t around to do it.

Riley watched every movement like it was sacred.

”You’re really good at this,” she said.

Charlie shrugged. ”I’ve dyed her hair before.”

I blinked. ”You have?”

Charlie smiled. ”You begged me for highlights because you thought it would make you look older.”

”Ohh I remember that. I wanted to look like I was in a band hahaha.” The memory making me laugh

Charlie finished the first box, then opened the second, massaging the dye through my hair with gentle fingers.

”Okay,” she said softly. ”Now we wait.”

The three of us sat in the warm bathroom, the air thick with steam and dye fumes. The exhaust fan humming. Riley swung her legs. Charlie leaned against the counter. I sat on the toilet, towel around my neck, feeling strangely... safe.

Riley broke the silence first. ”You look happier.”

I nodded. ”Yeah. I am.”

The timer beeped, and Charlie straightened with a soft sigh of relief.

”Alright,” she said, brushing her gloves together. ”Let’s rinse it out.”

I stood, the towel still around my neck, and leaned over the sink. The warm water rushed over my scalp as Charlie gently worked her fingers through my hair, loosening the dye. Riley sat on the edge of the tub, chin in her hands, watching like she was witnessing a sacred ritual.

The water ran dark at first... then lighter... then clear.

Charlie shut off the faucet and squeezed the excess water from my hair with careful hands.

”Okay,” she whispered. ”Moment of truth.”

My heart thudded as she wrapped the towel around my head and guided me to sit again. Riley leaned forward, eyes wide.

Charlie took a breath, then pulled the towel away.

Riley gasped. ”Oh my god—Zora...”

My hair — my real hair — spilled over my shoulders in soft, damp waves. The exact shade I remembered. The exact shade I’d lost. The exact shade Charlie had made sure I could get back.

It was like looking at a piece of myself I thought was gone forever.

Charlie smiled, eyes shining. ”There it is.”

I touched a strand with trembling fingers. ”It’s... it’s really the right color thank God.”

Riley nodded fiercely. ”It’s you. It’s totally you.”

Charlie grabbed the blow dryer and plugged it in, switching it immediately to the lowest, coolest setting.

”No heat,” she said. ”I’m not letting this color fade after everything we went through.”

Riley snorted. ”She’s acting like she just painted the Sistine Chapel.”

Charlie shot her a look. ”This is more important.”

She lifted sections of my hair, drying them slowly, carefully. The cool air felt soothing against my scalp, and her fingers combing through the strands made my shoulders relax.

Riley watched with a soft smile. ”You look calmer.”

”I feel calmer,” I admitted.

Charlie brushed a damp lock behind my ear. ”Good. You deserve to feel like yourself.”

When she finished, my hair fell around me in soft, familiar waves

I ran my fingers through the freshly dried strands, feeling the weight of them, the softness.

”Riley?” I said quietly.

She perked up instantly. ”Yeah?”

”Could you... braid it? Just so you know...it’s not in my face.”

Riley’s whole face lit up like someone flipped a switch.

”YES. Absolutely. Sit. Sit right here. I’ve been WAITING for this.”

Charlie laughed under her breath. ”She’s been vibrating for twenty minutes.”

Riley hopped behind me on the toilet lid, gently gathering my hair into her hands. Her touch was surprisingly soft

”You have so much hair,” she murmured. ”It’s like braiding a cloud.”

Charlie leaned against the counter, arms crossed, smiling. ”She’s always had a lot. It’s kind of her thing.”

Riley separated the strands with practiced fingers. ”Well, it’s about to be her braided thing.”

I laughed

Riley’s fingers moved quickly, weaving the strands together with a rhythm that felt comforting. Familiar.

”There,” she said finally, tying the end with a small elastic she’d pulled from her wrist. ”Perfect.”

I touched the braid gently, my chest tightening with something grateful.

”Thank you,” I smiled.

Riley squeezed my shoulder. ”Anytime.”

The next moment my stomach betrayed me with a loud, unmistakable growl.

Riley snorted. ”Well. Someone’s starving.”

Charlie laughed softly. ”Come on, Let’s go eat I’m starving.”

I stood, smoothing the pastel striped shirt and pink shorts. The braid Riley made rested over my shoulder, neat and soft, the color of my original hair shining through.

We headed down the stairs together. Charlie on one side, Riley on the other, and the smell of pizza hit me like a warm hug.

Nate and Lucas were at the table, mid‑conversation, but the second they saw me...

Everything stopped.

Lucas’s eyes widened first. Then his cheeks flushed — a quick, sharp pink that he tried to hide by looking away.

But I saw it. He had definitely remembered holding me earlier.

He swallowed hard and brushed the thought away, pretending to focus on the table.

Nate, for once, didn’t say anything.

He just stared.

Like he was seeing me for the first time.

Charlie nudged me gently. ”Go on. Sit.”

I slid into the seat between Riley and Charlie. Nate and Lucas exchanged a look... awkward. Like they were trying to figure out how to act normal around someone who suddenly wasn’t who they thought she was.

Lucas cleared his throat. ”Uh... your hair looks... good.”

Nate nodded quickly. ”Yeah. Really good. Like... you.”

My chest warmed. ”Thanks.”

Riley grinned. ”We restored the aesthetic.”

Charlie groaned. ”Please stop calling it that.”

But the tension broke Riley was good at that.

Just like that.

The room felt lighter.

Lucas grabbed a slice. ”So... college tomorrow.”

Nate perked up. ”Yeah. The real move‑in day.”

Riley bounced in her seat. ”I can’t wait to see the campus again. And the dorms. And the food court. And—”

”Riley,” Charlie said, laughing. ”Breathe.”

I smiled

Tomorrow was still scary.

The devs were still out there.

Everything was still changing.

But right now?

Right now I was surrounded by people who cared.

People who saw me.

People who accepted me.

I felt excited.

After we finished eating, the house felt different — lighter, warmer, like the tension had finally cracked open and let something soft spill out. Nate and Lucas were still awkward in that sweet, careful way, but they were smiling. Riley kept bumping my shoulder like she couldn’t help it. Charlie kept watching me like she was memorizing every breath.

When we finally went upstairs, Charlie nudged me toward my room.

”Come on,” she said. ”We need to pick out something for you tomorrow.”

My stomach fluttered.

Charlie opened her closet and started flipping through hangers, humming thoughtfully. Riley flopped onto my bed, legs kicking in the air.

”So,” Riley said, ”what’s the vibe? Cute? Cozy? Cute‑cozy? Academic chic? ’I’m a mysterious girl with a tragic backstory’?”

Charlie shot her a look. ”Riley.”

”What? It’s a valid aesthetic.”

I laughed — soft, real. ”I don’t know. I just... want to feel like me.”

Charlie’s expression softened. ”Then we’ll find something that feels like Zora.”

She pulled out a soft pastel blouse — the same one we put in the keep pile— and held it up to my newly restored hair.

Charlie had just finished folding the safe, pastel blouse and jeans when something fluttered in my chest — small, shy, impossible to ignore.

I stared at the outfit.

It was fine.

It was comfortable.

It was safe.

But it wasn’t... cute. God what was I thinking. Now I secretly wanted... cute?

My cheeks frosted instantly — a thin shimmer of cold blooming across my skin. I tried to hide it, but Charlie noticed immediately.

”Zora?” she asked softly. ”What’s going on?”

Riley perked up from where she was sprawled across my bed. ”Yeah, what’s the frost‑face about?”

I swallowed, ok if I was gonna do this so be it I thought twisting my fingers together. ”I... um... I was...um thinking...”

Charlie stepped closer. ”Thinking what, sweetheart?”

My voice came out small, and I looked to away. ”Maybe... maybe something cuter.”

Both of them blinked.

Riley’s eyes lit up like a firework.

Charlie’s softened like warm light.

”Cuter?” Charlie repeated gently. ”Like what?”

I hesitated, cheeks frosting harder. ”Like... something from the pile we said no to earlier.”

Riley gasped dramatically. ”THE NO PILE?!”

Charlie shot her a look. ”Riley.”

”What? I’m excited.”

Charlie turned back to me, her voice warm and steady. ”Zora... if you want something cute, we’re getting you something cute. No embarrassment allowed.”

I swallowed. ”Even if you pick something... really cute?”

Charlie smiled. ”Especially then.”

I nodded.”Ok, but nothing to crazy.”

She crossed the room to the corner where we’d stacked the ”no pile” — the clothes I’d been too scared, too shy, too unsure to claim earlier. She knelt and sifted through it with careful hands.

Then she pulled out a soft pastel pleated skirt — the one Riley had tried to sneak in — and a fitted top with tiny embroidered flowers. The outfit I’d secretly liked but hadn’t dared to choose.

Charlie held it up to me.

”This,” she said softly, ”feels like the Zora.”

Riley nodded so hard her ponytail bounced. ”YES. That’s the one. That’s the outfit.”

My frost‑blush deepened. ”I... I want to try it.”

Charlie’s smile widened, proud and warm. ”Then this is your first‑day outfit.”

Riley clapped once. ”College Zora is gonna be adorable.”

”Riley,” Charlie warned.

”What? She is.”

I laughed, small and shy.

Charlie handed me the clothes and stepped back. Riley scooted to the edge of the bed, practically vibrating but trying to stay quiet.

I slipped into the bathroom, heart pounding. The fabric felt soft under my fingers — lighter than anything I used to wear, softer than anything I ever let myself choose.

The skirt slid on easily, brushing against my legs in a way that made my breath catch. The top fit snug but gentle, the embroidered flowers sitting neatly across my chest.

I stared down at myself.

Cute.

Really cute.

My cheeks frosted again.

”Zora?” Charlie called softly. ”You okay?”

I swallowed. ”Umm I don’t know, I... I’m coming out.”

I stepped into the room.

Both of them froze.

Charlie’s eyes softened instantly, her hand coming up to her mouth.

Riley made a tiny squeaking noise like her soul left her body.

”Oh my god,” Riley whispered. ”You’re adorable.”

Charlie stepped closer, her voice warm and full. ”Zora... you look beautiful.”

My frost‑blush deepened. ”Really?”

”Really,” Charlie said.

Riley nodded fiercely. ”You look like the girl who’s gonna walk into college tomorrow and absolutely OWN the place.”

I looked down at myself again — the skirt, the soft top, the braid Riley had made, my original hair color shining through.

A small smile tugged at my lips.

”I need to see.” I walked to the mirror and froze I looked good. Like way to good. It fit perfectly. I could see frost forming up to the tips of my pointed ears.

”I... like it,” I whispered.

Charlie beamed. ”Good. Because it’s perfect.”

Riley flopped backward onto the bed, kicking her feet. ”I’m gonna die. She’s too cute.”

I laughed

And the girl in the mirror — the girl in the cute outfit — laughed with me.

I swallowed, suddenly aware of how small the house felt. ”Charlie... can I ask you something?”

Her expression softened instantly. ”Yeah. Anything.”

I hesitated, fingers curling at my sides. The words felt childish, but the feeling behind them wasn’t. ”Can I... sleep in your bed tonight? I just... I don’t want to be alone.”

Charlie didn’t even blink. She stepped closer, her voice low and steady. ”Yeah. Of course you can. You don’t even have to ask.”

Some of the tension in my chest loosened. Charlie reached out and squeezed my shoulder

”You’re safe with me,” she said. ”Tonight, and every night you need it.”

Charlie handed me a pair of soft pajamas. The pastel ones from earlier, and gave my arm a gentle squeeze.

”Go change,” she said softly. ”I’ll get the bed ready.”

Riley hopped off the bed, stretching. ”I’ll give you privacy. But if you need anything, yell. I’m literally right outside.”

I nodded, cheeks frosting again. ”Thank you.”

I slipped into the bathroom and closed the door behind me. The room still smelled faintly of dye and steam, and my braid brushed against my back as I changed. The pajamas were soft, warm, comforting — like being wrapped in a cloud.

When I looked in the mirror, I barely recognized the girl staring back.

My original hair color.

My braid.

My soft pajamas.

My face — tired, but mine.

I took a breath and stepped back into the bedroom.

Charlie had already pulled back the blankets on her bed, fluffing the pillows and dimming the lights. The room felt warm and safe, like a place where nothing bad could reach me.

She looked up when she saw me. ”There you are.”

Riley peeked in from the hallway. ”Aww. She looks like a sleepy marshmallow.”

”Riley,” Charlie sighed.

”What? She does.”

I laughed and climbed into Charlie’s bed. The sheets were cool and soft, and the mattress dipped gently under my weight.

Riley leaned against the doorframe, smiling softly. ”You’re gonna sleep better tonight. I can feel it.”

My eyes stung, not from fear this time, but from tiredness.

”Goodnight, Zora,” Riley said, giving a little wave before slipping out.

Charlie turned off the lamp, leaving only the soft glow from the hallway. She slid into the bed beside me, close enough that I could feel her warmth.

Charlie wrapped an arm around my shoulders, gentle and steady.

”There,” she said. ”Containment achieved.”

I snorted. ”I’m not a hazard.”

Charlie raised an eyebrow. ”You froze your bedroom floor earlier.”

”...okay, maybe a little hazard.”

”Don’t hog the blankets,” she said.

”I’m not hogging anything.”

”You always hog the blankets.”

”That was one time.”

”Zora, you cocooned yourself like a moth.”

I snorted into the pillow. ”Shut up.”

Charlie nudged my shoulder with hers. ”Go to sleep, dork.”

My breathing slowed, the room fading into a soft blur. Charlie shifted beside me, pulling the blanket up over my shoulder in a way she pretended was practical and not caring.

”Unbelievable,” she muttered. ”You fall asleep in like thirty seconds. Must be nice.”

I mumbled something that was probably English.

Charlie sighed. ”Yeah, yeah. Goodnight, snow gremlin.”

I would’ve protested that nickname if I wasn’t already drifting.

The last thing I felt was Charlie nudging the blanket closer to me again — even though she’d just complained about it — and muttering under her breath:

”Don’t drool on my pillow.”

And then I was gone.

First off: THANK YOU. Yes, you. The one reading this. The one who keeps pointing out typos I swear I didn’t see. The one who screams in the comments to me at 3 AM like ”EXCUSE ME???”

You’re all unhinged and I adore you, and you’re ideas that you conveniently inject into my brain. You know who you are.

Now, important announcement:

I’m taking a tiny break from posting so I can stop living the ”write chapter → panic → post chapter → repeat” lifestyle. I want to get 10–15 maybe more, chapters ahead so I can actually edit like a responsible adult instead of a caffeinated raccoon.

Don’t panic —

No, the story is not ending.

No, I have not been kidnapped by rogue editors.

No, I have not run away to join a circus (yet).

I love this series way too much. It’s basically my emotional support project at this point. Your comments are the highlight of my day and also the reason I sometimes choke on my drink.

It’s been helping me mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and possibly in ways science cannot explain.

I’ll still be around with updates, and the next chapter is planned for 7/8/2026.

Be patient, my little chaos gremlins. I shall return.
