Chapter 587: Chapter 584: Breaking the Balance

——

Meanwhile, Zong Jian was also getting entangled in trouble.

”You’re an old hand in Jianghu, let’s skip the pleasantries and get straight to the point!” The policeman sitting across from Zong Jian said coldly, ”What’s your relationship with Zhou Huchen?”

In a cramped interrogation room, Zong Jian looked at the officer questioning him, his wrinkled face calm: ”No relationship at all!”

”Bang!”

After a crisp, loud sound, a new folder appeared on the table between them.

”Inside this is the DNA test report of Zhou Huchen, along with his own confession, have a look for yourself!”

The officer in charge of questioning spoke with a pained expression: ”You were once a senior I trusted immensely, I hope you can face your mistakes!”

Hearing the disappointment in the officer’s voice, Zong Jian’s mouth twitched: ”If that disappoints you so much, then give up your trust in me because you didn’t even give me the basic trust!”

The officer across the table pondered for a while and then said solemnly: ”But how do you explain this DNA report? Also, in Zhou Huchen’s confession, he said you brought him into the Provincial Public Security Bureau out of guilt for him, and most importantly...”

”Most importantly, the department head who facilitated his entry into the Special Operations Unit of the police said I had previously informed him.” Zong Jian cut in, then laughed coldly: ”Am I right?”

The officer across didn’t show too much surprise: ”If this is something you personally did, it’s not surprising you know what I’m going to say!”

”If?” Zong Jian found it a bit funny: ”There are so many ifs?”

”Actually, it’s not ifs. The DNA test results combined with Zhou Huchen’s confession are irrefutable evidence!” The officer interrogating him gritted his teeth: ”I’ll ask you one last time, will you talk or not?”

Zong Jian raised an eyebrow: ”Talk about what?”

”As a senior, you should understand that playing dumb is useless!”

At this point, the officer had slammed the table in anger: ”You should also understand the consequences of refusing to confess if the evidence is conclusive!”

”I believe, one day the truth will come to light!”

Zong Jian stood up: ”At that time, those who fabricated evidence and kicked me while I’m down will be punished by law, remember these words as the last statement in my interrogation record!”

Watching the elderly man’s dejected yet upright figure being escorted out of the interrogation room, the officer questioning him had an illusion, that this senior whose police career outlasted his own age might have been wronged!

But after seeing the black-and-white documents on the desk, the officer hesitated for a moment and still added Zong Jian’s words to the record...

In the end, Melinda still didn’t get an answer from Xiao Tian. Her disappointment surged like waves crashing on rocks, one after another, filling her heart with unspeakable sadness.

”Actually, I’m not...”

Seeing Melinda turn her back, Xiao Tian couldn’t help but speak, but he was interrupted before he could finish.

Melinda, secretly shedding a tear, turned around with a bright smile: ”You didn’t take it seriously, did you? I was just joking!”

Faced with that moonlit smile, Xiao Tian was momentarily speechless, unable to find words past his parted lips.

He could tell the difference between a joke and being serious, but since Melinda said it was a joke, he had to treat it as such for now.

After a long silence, Melinda suddenly sighed: ”It seems those wandering soldiers have a lot of foresight!”

Xiao Tian asked curiously: ”What do you mean?”

Upon seeing Xiao Tian’s question, Melinda explained in detail how the third-party camp had initially predicted the situation.

...

”So, they anticipated that I would disrupt this balance?” Xiao Tian was surprised: ”Looks like not everyone in this bunch is an idiot after all!”

Melinda rolled her eyes at him: ”There are quite a few top thirty experts here; you just happened to run into a group of lustful fools!”

”So it seems breaking this balance now depends on two factors!” Xiao Tian said slowly: ”Though the possibility is small and can be ignored!”

Melinda, however, was confused: ”What are the two key factors? And what do you mean the possibility is small?”

”As it stands now, the first point is to see how strong the desire for revenge is among the experts who were deceived, and the second is the persuasive power of others.”

Xiao Tian explained: ”If the others can persuade them to stay, or if they themselves aren’t strongly motivated for revenge, then the balance won’t be broken!”

”You’re quite the thinker!” Melinda said, seemingly half-praising and half-criticizing after hearing this explanation.

”Which is why the possibility is very small!” Xiao Tian continued: ”This leaderless, scattered organization can be destabilized by just diverting part of their manpower!”

”Exactly!” Melinda agreed: ”These killers, used to operating alone, it’s sheer fantasy to think they’d all submit to one person!”

After expressing these thoughts, the two fell silent again, unable to stop considering the impact this situation might create.

If those deceived experts sought revenge against Jiang Kaishan, it would surely attract the attention of both the Huaxia and foreign factions.

Even if it was a small-scale effort, just a tiny, insignificant portion leaving, and with no particularly strong experts among them, it would still signal something to the other two factions.

Namely, that soon, the coalition of Dark List assassins and freelance experts would fall apart.

Although these experts individually pose no great threat, once they join an organized faction, they become an irreversible menace.

Because, no one can guarantee that the opposing faction won’t recruit these experts, nor can they ensure that these experts won’t join that faction.

This uncertainty fuels mutual suspicion and dread between the two factions. Any sign of trouble would prompt an immediate and forceful response to nip the threat in the bud.

The consequence of this would be a complete war between the two factions, causing the hard-won stability to collapse in an instant.

It’s like a warehouse full of explosives, whether you ignite one or a heap, the catastrophic result is the same!

...

”Don’t overthink it!” Xiao Tian exhaled deeply: ”There’s no essential difference between sooner or later, bringing it forward or delaying it won’t make much difference.”

Melinda clearly understood this point, waiting a day longer or sooner wouldn’t bring a qualitative change to any side, in such a grand scheme, major events might actually be trivial!

Just as the third-party camp said, the Hunter would become a variable that might upset the balance; it sounds formidable, but what real impact will it have?
