Chapter 421: Chapter 418: Investigating the Crime Scene

Yu Ningxue announced the end of the meeting. After everyone finished packing up their documents and meeting notes, they went back to their own tasks.

Once everyone dispersed, only Yu Ningxue remained in the conference room, resting her chin in her hand, forcing herself to concentrate as she watched the surveillance footage in front of her over and over.

If he were here, surely there would be a way, right?

This was an instinctual belief; ever since she met Xiao Tian, he always had solutions for unsolvable problems!

Just as she was thinking this, the door to the conference room opened. Without looking up, Yu Ningxue said, ”Don’t you know to knock before entering? Basic manners, you know?”

”Eh?” Xiao Tian saw Yu Ningxue looking dejected and asked with concern, ”Beautiful master, are you thinking about me looking like this?”

Hearing the familiar voice, Yu Ningxue was both surprised and delighted, quickly beckoning Xiao Tian over, ”Take a look at this!”

After watching the surveillance footage, Xiao Tian asked with a puzzled expression, ”Is there a problem?”

Yu Ningxue slapped her forehead, realizing she was too hasty. Xiao Tian didn’t even know the specifics, so just showing him a clip wouldn’t make it possible to discover any clues!

Then, she recounted the bizarre incident from last night to Xiao Tian in detail, hoping he could find a breakthrough and formulate a targeted action plan.

After listening to Yu Ningxue’s case details, Xiao Tian frowned, stroked his chin, and slowly paced, saying, ”From what you said, so many people suddenly showing abnormalities definitely can’t be a coincidence.”

”So, do the victims have any commonalities?”

”None discovered so far!” Yu Ningxue said with a worried look.

Xiao Tian paced back and forth, unable to come up with a conclusion. This kind of thing couldn’t be guessed randomly.

If the initial direction is wrong, trying to correct it later would mean starting all over again!

”Since we can’t figure it out, let’s go to the crime scene first!” Xiao Tian, without any leads, could only say, ”Hopefully, we can find some valuable clues.”

Yu Ningxue had to nod, for there was no better solution at the moment!

The two drove to the scene. After getting out of the car, Xiao Tian and Yu Ningxue stepped into the victim’s apartment building, where they heard the clanking sounds of an old elevator.

Yu Ningxue said a bit timidly, ”How about we take the stairs instead?”

Xiao Tian nodded in agreement with Yu Ningxue’s suggestion, taking her hand and walking up the steps.

The victim’s floor was the sixth, the highest in this building, and often rented by expatriates working in Shanghai.

Because of its remote location and outdated facilities, the rent here wasn’t high, usually around five or six hundred yuan.

Yu Ningxue held Xiao Tian’s hand as they walked through the dim corridor, nervously looking around.

Even though she knew she would be safe with Xiao Tian, a girl’s innate fear of darkness was uncontrollable.

Reaching the top floor, seeing all the security doors of the victim’s rented apartments tightly shut, Yu Ningxue hastily reminded Xiao Tian, ”We’re the police, don’t damage people’s property!”

Xiao Tian patted Yu Ningxue’s shoulder and said, as if receiving an imperial order, ”Yes, beautiful master!”

Yu Ningxue couldn’t help but chuckle at Xiao Tian’s response, easing much of her tension.

She then watched in amazement as Xiao Tian produced a wire like a magic trick, directing it towards the lock of the security door.

Yu Ningxue was alarmed and exclaimed, ”Don’t...”

Then a clear ’click’ sounded, leaving her incredulous as she watched Xiao Tian, who smiled slightly and stepped inside.

Yu Ningxue’s earlier reminder was due to hearing that many security doors now included anti-wire technology, which would discharge electricity to knock out anyone attempting a break-in with a wire.

But before she could finish her sentence, Xiao Tian was already inside the door, which made her amazed. Even the most professional locksmith company couldn’t be as exaggerated as him, right?

She hastily followed him inside, unable to think further.

This was a small unit; originally a standalone three-bedroom with one living room and one bathroom, it had been remodeled by the landlord into separate small rooms, leaving the living room empty.

Xiao Tian repeated his technique and searched the three rooms one by one, with Yu Ningxue closely following behind him, becoming a bit discouraged seeing Xiao Tian frown.

Indeed, this case was too bizarre. Yu Ningxue, having been in the police for years, had never encountered such a case!

”Has the Municipal Bureau formed an expert team to investigate?” Xiao Tian asked.

”Because there are no casualties for the time being,” Yu Ningxue explained, ”The nature of this case is still highly debated, so...”

”Have the victims undergone any physical examinations?” Xiao Tian continued to ask.

”Not yet!” Yu Ningxue said, ”You know, this is all temporary accommodation for migrant workers, and though we’ve tried to communicate with the families, no information has been received yet!”

Xiao Tian pondered for a moment and went to the last unexplored bathroom. If nothing useful was found here, they’d have to return empty-handed!

As the bathroom was shared, no personal toiletries like toothpaste, towels, or shampoo were found.

Just as Xiao Tian was about to leave the room, he suddenly recalled a secret technique taught to him by a mysterious master before, and returned to the spot.

Yu Ningxue looked curiously at Xiao Tian squatting by the drain, not knowing what he intended to do.

Xiao Tian reached out and removed the stopper blocking the drain, revealing a bundle of black hair inside, giving Yu Ningxue goosebumps.

Xiao Tian took a long strand from the bundle, closed his eyes, and began doing something unknown, leaving Yu Ningxue dumbfounded by the eerie scene, her imagination running wild.

Though appearing deep in thought, Xiao Tian was actually employing a secret technique, which was simple yet rarely used. In the police industry, possessing such a technique should place one at the provincial department by now.

Simply put, it uses items such as hair or nails as a medium to probe a part of the medium owner’s memory.

Of course, the memory probed may vary in length, depending on one’s understanding and application of the secret technique.

As a newbie, trying this for the first time, Xiao Tian’s success was a matter of probability.

Fortunately, after several attempts, Xiao Tian succeeded. Though his eyes were closed, different images continuously flashed before him, somewhat akin to the Sea God’s Illusion Realm.

However, unlike the Sea God’s Illusion Realm which couldn’t be entered or exited at will, this secret technique could be terminated at any time.

With his eyes closed, Xiao Tian squatted there, occasionally frowning, sometimes smiling, leaving Yu Ningxue bewildered.

Seeing Xiao Tian make such bizarre gestures, Yu Ningxue grew anxious, beads of cold sweat forming on her forehead, unsure of what to do.

She dared not leave for help nor disturb him recklessly!

Next, Yu Ningxue heard Xiao Tian utter a strange, or rather... sleazy laugh?

Yu Ningxue shook her head, wondering if she was hallucinating.

”This thing works better than VR!”

With this remark from Xiao Tian, Yu Ningxue heard it clearly and could confirm it wasn’t her imagination!
