Chapter 406: Chapter 403: Shanghai University Department Chair

On the commercial street of Shanghai University, inside an unassuming small restaurant, a young man and woman were bustling around, occasionally exchanging happy smiles when their eyes met.

Although small in area, the restaurant’s interior was quite unique. First-time visitors would feel as though they were in another world.

The man and woman were none other than the golden couple, Wang Meng and Li Ying. Ever since Wang Meng got injured last time, the two have been inseparable, wanting to spend every possible minute together.

”One more serving of shredded pork noodles!”

Hearing the customer’s order from downstairs, Wang Meng shouted in response, ”Alright!”

Then he quickly boiled water and chopped vegetables for preparation. As she watched Wang Meng sweating profusely from the work, Li Ying gently wiped his sweat, concerned as she said, ”Your wound is just healing, don’t overdo it! Let me take over while you rest! ”

Wang Meng dropped the noodles into the pot and covered it, tapping his chest confidently, ”No worries, my physical condition is not something ordinary people can compare to!”

Not long after, a bowl of steaming hot noodles was ready. Wang Meng skillfully added the prepared seasonings, then carried the bowl downstairs.

”Here you go! Your noodles are ready,” Wang Meng said with a smile to the young couple dressed as students in front of him.

The girl took a pair of chopsticks from the container beside her and asked, ”Boss, why is your restaurant’s noodles so delicious but not very well-known?”

”Junior, are you just ignorant?” Upon hearing the girl’s question, the guy on the other side jumped in to answer, ”You just started school so of course, you don’t know. I told you I’ll bring you to try our Shanghai University’s signature noodles, now you believe it, right?!”

The young man patted his nearly empty pockets with a smug look, casually saying, ”If you want to eat again, I’ll bring you next time!”

Secretly feeling lucky, he didn’t expect this beautiful junior to be so naive and inexperienced.

Watching the young man’s shameless demeanor, Wang Meng couldn’t help but admire him. To brazenly lie without turning red was a talent almost on par with Tian!

Of course, these words, in front of Xiao Tian, Wang Meng would never dare to utter!

At this moment, a greasy middle-aged man with a receding hairline followed a tall, thin elderly man dressed like a Daoist into the restaurant.

”Hello! Please sit here.” Wang Meng warmly led the two to a vacant seat nearby and asked, ”What would you like to eat?”

These days of helping had given this battle-hardened detective the demeanor of a professional server.

The balding middle-aged man frowned but saw the old Daoist seemed satisfied, nodding approvingly with a bit of the air of an aloof sage. Resignedly, he put on a smile and said, ”Bring us all your signature dishes right away, understood?!”

The earlier cunning young man immediately sat up straight upon hearing the familiar voice and said to the pretty junior girl, ”I’m feeling a bit of a stomachache, why don’t we leave now? I’ll bring you next time!”

He knew that voice all too well. Glancing over, as expected—it was department head Chen Guangnian.

The name Chen Guangnian was like a curse to older students like them. Rumors said he harmed many poor male and female students, but due to a lack of concrete evidence, this department head remained unchallenged.

The junior girl, while happily indulging in her meal, had to stop and sadly wiped her mouth when she heard the guy ruin the mood, reluctantly getting up. She asked the guy, ”Is it possible to...take the food to-go?”

Her words instantly caught the attention of nearby diners, and for a moment, the place fell silent.

The girl bowed her head in embarrassment, tears brimming in her eyes, while the guy acted as if he didn’t know her, which greatly hurt her.

The question about taking the food to-go also attracted Chen Guangnian’s attention. Seeing the two dressed in Shanghai University uniforms, he stormed over in anger.

Spotting the guy, Chen Guangnian sneered and said, ”Oh, I recognize you. Aren’t you that famous poor student from a deprived county?”

”If you can’t afford it, then why the hell are you in school?” Chen Guangnian mocked, ”All you poor folks do is bring disgrace to universities. What else are you good for?”

The guy turned beet red but didn’t dare utter a word.

Hearing this blatant discrimination, the girl raised her head abruptly, defiantly retorted, ”What’s wrong with being from a poor background? We don’t steal, don’t rob, don’t break the law. We got into university through our ability. Who are you to criticize?”

Inwardly, the guy cursed, feeling a chill. He thought of approaching this beautiful junior fellow because she was attractive; maybe someday she might hook up with a wealthy second generation, and he could widen his options, right?!

But now he regretted deeply, wishing he could strangle himself. It’s bad enough if she’s unlucky because of Chen Guangnian, but if he jeopardizes his own graduation...

The guy decisively took action, stepping forward and bowing to Chen Guangnian, saying, ”Director, I’m sorry! I know I was wrong!”

The guy apologized repeatedly, seemingly eager to kneel and lick Chen Guangnian’s shoes, then explained, ”I don’t know her, we just happened to sit together!”

The girl was shocked, looking at his sycophantic demeanor and his eager disassociation, in disbelief: Is this still the man from my hometown?

Chen Guangnian’s eyes lit up when he saw the girl. His favorites were these pretty girls with no money, power, or background. Could a wolf resist a lamb walking to his door?

”Hmph! Good-for-nothing!”

To demonstrate his educational authority in front of the girl, Chen Guangnian, with years of educational experience, showed the guy what it meant to set an example in a half-hour long impassioned lecture.

After his lengthy speech, the guy tearfully shouted apologies to his parents, teachers, and country for nurturing him!

After bowing deeply, he wiped his tears and fled the restaurant in disgrace, leaving the girl standing there dazed.

Witnessing the girl’s blank stare, Chen Guangnian seemed moved by his own speech and said, ”Study hard! I’ll be paying attention to you.” Ending with a meaningful smile.

Just as Chen Guangnian seemed eager to start another round of lecturing, the old Daoist couldn’t hold back, clearing his throat twice in annoyance, wishing he could silence this fool.

Hearing the Daoist cough, Chen Guangnian shuddered, finally recalling his purpose there.

Chen Guangnian wanted to slap himself. His penchant for lust was truly troublesome; he resolved to be more careful in the future.

Although this wasn’t the first nor likely the last time he’d remind himself of this.

Frankly, if Chen Guangnian diverted some of his obsession with women into actual work, he wouldn’t only be a department head now.

The girl, eyes blurred with tears, walked towards the door, feeling her future was utterly dark. Was being poor really a crime? Did it mean she should be discriminated against?

Lost in thought, she didn’t notice where she was stepping, and after bumping a bottle, she slipped and fell back.

”Please excuse me, Saintly Virtue Daoist, I truly...”

The girl’s sudden cry drew the attention of Chen Guangnian, who had been awkwardly apologizing to the person called Saintly Virtue Daoist.

Once more, Chen Guangnian’s eyes gleamed with a peculiar light, and he lunged forward, catching the girl in his arms.
