Chapter 1372: Chapter 585: Five-Year Overseas Study Plan (2)

This is a soldier who came from our peasants!

Seeing the situation, Remon felt a bit helpless. He knew they were destined to be watched as models now, so he could only nod solemnly in all directions as a greeting. Then he came to a mutton shop that was clearly run by a Kakasong person.

Why was it clearly a Kakasong person? Because the shop had the Kakasong Duchy emblem hung outside, featuring a sword in the middle flanked by fleur-de-lis in red and blue.

The mutton shop sold both raw and cooked mutton, and even offered Kakasong specialties like mutton pies, mutton bread, and mutton stew. The owner was a typical Kakasong person, not very cultured but strong and highly skilled in combat. This was because the whole Kakasong valued martial prowess, having resisted all southern invasions over long history. Hence, the people here had a wild aura, and the best way to face endless harassment from the Green Skin and Beastman Tribe from the Black Mountain Range was to become more savage than them.

”Hello! Respectable Mr. Old Guard, may I ask what you’d like to eat? Come in, we have the best mutton from Kakasong, both raw and cooked!” The butcher seemed a bit surprised to see Remon appear and quickly spoke, squeezing out a smile.

”I’d like to buy some cooked mutton.” Remon nodded.

”Please take a look yourself, and let me know how much you’d like.” The owner said politely.

Remon bought two pounds of cooked lamb chops. The best mutton cost him several silver coins. Holding the oilcloth, Remon returned to his home.

Because the town’s security was good and his home was relatively close to the city center, the door was not closed. His old mother was sitting at the entrance, washing green vegetables. Despite her somewhat cloudy eyes, her spirit was quite good and she recognized her son from afar: ”Remon! My son!”

This call attracted the attention of the whole street, and Remon immediately felt the gaze of dozens of eyes. Resigned, the son hurried a few steps forward and habitually saluted his mother: ”Mom, I’m back!”

”Ah~ it’s good to be back, it’s good to be back. Thomas has been saying why his big brother hasn’t returned yet!” The old mother stood up, excited at first, but then feeling a bit fearful upon seeing her son’s uniform. She quickly wiped her hands on her apron, hesitating in place. Despite wearing good linen clothes, she still felt ashamed, becoming nervous: ”Ah, Remon, I...”

”Mom, where is Thomas?” Remon was unconcerned and handed over the cooked lamb chops: ”I brought something good for Thomas to eat.”

”Thomas is still at the Dwarves’ place studying... Oh dear, we don’t lack anything at home, why did you buy this?!” The old mother was quite happy to see her son acting familiarly, she took the lamb chops, and her face quickly turned from tense to reproachful: ”Why did you buy this?”

”What? Doesn’t Thomas like mutton?” Remon was somewhat surprised; he remembered that his brother Thomas loved mutton.

”No, no, it’s just that, hearing you were coming home today, I...” The old mother hurriedly entered the house and brought out something from the kitchen.

A lamb’s hind leg.

Seeing the lamb chops he bought and his mother’s purchase of a lamb leg, mother and son laughed together: ”Hahahahaha~”

The house was filled with joyful air, inside and out.

That night, when the lively brother Thomas returned, the family, who had endured so much hardship, finally gathered again for a meal. They never imagined that, as escaped serfs, they could live such a good life.

The family had recently hired two maidservants, bought by the old mother when she went to town. For the usually frugal old mother, spending a large sum on maidservants was quite unbelievable. But Remon soon discovered that, apart from an older woman responsible for housework, the other maid was a young, beautiful girl who appeared to be around fourteen or fifteen, with proper features. According to the old mother, she came from Leonais, and seeing her doing temporary work on the street with a hungry belly, she pitifully brought her home.

Recently, there were many Leonais people in town, especially women. Remon thought it wasn’t surprising, but when his mother suggested sending the maid to the military camp to serve Remon’s needs, the Old Guard quickly shook his head: ”No, no, Mom, the guard’s discipline is very strict; no family members can be in the military camp. We train together, eat together, and live in the camp, with only two days off every ten days to return home.”

”Can’t you get married?” The old mother seemed very surprised.

”Marriage is allowed, but even if married, you must live in the camp. Only during holidays and Sundays can you return home.” Remon said with a bit of helplessness, ”Unless you retire from the Old Guard or are reassigned to another position.”

”That’s too strict...” The old mother muttered continuously, but upon hearing about the Old Guard’s benefits from Remon’s mouth, she couldn’t say much more. Like all peasants in the territory, she had a blind trust and admiration for His Grace the Duke.
