Triple X System

The swirling dome of pressurized ocean water hissed as it met the scalding heat of the desert air. Inside the aquatic sphere, Seraphina’s hands glowed with a deep, pulsating azure light, channeling the ancient healing currents of the deep trenches directly into Elara’s shoulder.

”Stay still,” Seraphina commanded softly, her voice steady and calm despite the sweat dripping down her temple. ”If you fight the flow, the cold rot will sink deeper into your core.”

Elara gritted her teeth, her fingers digging deep into the scorching sand beneath her. The sensation was agonizing—like freezing needles being driven into a open burn—as the dark purple fire fought against the tide. Little by little, the creeping purple veins retreating from her neck began to dull, turning into wisps of foul-smelling black steam that dissolved harmlessly into the swirling water dome.

A long, shuddering breath escaped Elara’s lips as the intense, void-like agony finally ebbed into a dull, manageable ache.

”It’s... it’s fading,” Elara whispered, looking up at the ocean queen with pale, exhausted eyes. ”Thank you, Seraphina.”

”Save your strength,” Seraphina replied gently, lowering her hands as the water dome collapsed outward, dousing the surrounding hot sand. ”We are far from out of the woods.”

Outside the barrier, Kyle and Yua were a storm of dark blades and blood-red claws.

Kyle’s shadow gauntlet flared violently as he drove his dark blade upward through the jaw of a leaping chimera. He didn’t just cut the creature down; he channeled a wave of jet-black demon fire straight through its skull, incinerating the beast from the inside out before its heavy hooves could touch the floor. Beside him, Yua blurred across the sand, her razor-sharp claws leaving arcs of pressurized blood-mana that severed limbs and necks in clean, brutal strokes.

Yet, as the last of the immediate wave collapsed into mounds of sizzled hide and ash, the eerie nature of the horde became undeniably clear.

The fallen creatures didn’t bleed like natural animals. The dark fluid leaking from their severed torsos was thick, black, and completely devoid of organic warmth. Faint, pulsing threads of corrupted mana writhed inside their exposed muscle tissue, twitching like severed marionette strings even after the beasts were thoroughly dead.

Yua nudged a severed chimera head with the toe of her boot, her brow furrowing in deep disgust. ”Look at this muscle tissue. There’s no fat, no natural organs, no internal structure. It’s just compressed meat held together by dark mana.”

Kyle stepped beside her, his dark coat sweeping over the sand as he lowered his dormant shadow blade. He looked down at the iron collars bolted into the creatures’ necks, watching the faint red runes flicker out as the dark fluid dried in the heat.

”They aren’t wild monsters,” Kyle said, his voice dropping into a low, analytical hush. ”And they aren’t standard tamed beasts either. They’re corrupted puppets. Flesh constructs forged from a single central source and flooded with void-fire to act as a living barrier.”

Elara walked over slowly, supported lightly by Seraphina. She looked at the writhing black threads inside the beast’s corpse, her indigo eyes narrowing. ”It feels eerily similar to a high-tier blood puppet spell... but heavily bastardized with divine rot. Whoever created these chimeras didn’t breed them. They manufactured them by the thousands.”

Kyle glanced up toward the distant horizon, where the capital of the Lumia Kingdom rested on its high white stone plateau.

”They didn’t build this horde to conquer the desert,” Kyle noted grimly, his slitted dark eyes reflecting the harsh sunlight. ”They built it to filter out anyone who couldn’t survive a meat grinder. The whole perimeter is a giant alarm system.”

”And we just set off every single bell,” Yua added with a dangerous, expectant grin. ”So, do we keep walking, or do we wait for the rest of the puppets to wake up?”

”We move,” Kyle said firmly. ”Elara, stay in the center. Seraphina, keep a water ward primed. We aren’t stopping until we reach those gates.”

The trek across the scorching desert plains was a quiet, tense march. The remaining scatterings of the chimera horde seemed to give them a wide berth, as if whatever intelligence was driving the corrupted puppets had ordered them to hold their line rather than throw themselves into Kyle’s demon fire again.

As the four of them approached the base of the white stone plateau, the sheer scale of the kingdom’s transformation became suffocating.

The grand white gates of the Lumia Kingdom, which had once been adorned with golden banners and open to traders from across the continent, were now completely sealed behind three massive plates of reinforced dark iron. Huge defensive ballistas, tipped with glowing blue anti-mana bolts, were trained downward from the battlements. Dozens of elite guards clad in sleek, form-fitting black armor stood lined along the high walls, their faces hidden behind dark, featureless visors.

The air around the gates was so dense with defensive barrier energy that every step forward felt like pushing through thick, invisible gel.

”This entire place feels like a giant cage,” Yua muttered, her claws twitching at her side as she scanned the archers on the battlements. ”It’s a trap, Kyle. They’ve turned the front entrance into a killing box.”

”I know,” Kyle said calmly, stopping twenty paces from the sealed iron gates. ”But the lock isn’t set to keep us out. It’s set to force an audience.”

Before Yua or Seraphina could answer, a loud, grinding screech echoed across the plateau.

The heavy iron plates blocking the main gates began to slide upward, steam spewing from pressurized brass vents along the stone arches. The massive oak doors groaned as they swung open, revealing a wide, empty cobblestone courtyard framed by high marble pillars.

Out from the shadowed gateway walked a single figure, flanked by six elite guards in sleek black armor.

The young man walked with slow, deliberate grace, his dark, neatly styled black hair catching the harsh desert sunlight. He was dressed in immaculate gold and black attire—a high-collared black dress shirt beneath a finely tailored vest with intricate floral embroidery, wrapped in a heavy dark jacket with wide, shimmering gold lapels. Around his neck rested a dark ribbon tie secured with a pristine golden broach. Resting casually over his right shoulder was a heavy golden sword, its long, lethal blade bound tightly inside a sleek, deep black scabbard that pulsed with a faint, restrained divine light.

King Troy stopped ten paces away, his dark, calculating eyes locking directly onto Kyle’s face.

The air between the two men turned instantly heavy, a cold, awkward tension settling over the open courtyard. They were neither bitter enemies seeking each other’s blood nor friends exchanging warm greetings. It was the uneasy, sharp neutrality of two apex predators who knew far too much about each other’s capabilities to make a careless move.

Yua’s eyes narrowed as she shifted into a low combat stance behind Kyle, while Seraphina placed a quiet, grounding hand on her trident, sensing the suffocating pressure radiating from the golden sword on Troy’s shoulder.

Kyle didn’t draw his blade. He simply stood his ground, his dark coat rustling in the dry wind, his hands resting casually in his pockets.

”You’ve upgraded your wardrobe, Troy,” Kyle said, his tone flat, dry, and entirely unimpressed. ”I see the kingdom finally gave you a coat that fits.”

Troy didn’t answer immediately. He stared at Kyle for a long, quiet second, his cold face unreadable. Then, slowly, a faint, amused smile broke across the king’s usually frozen expression—a light, mocking smirk that cut right through the suffocating tension.

”I had a feeling I’d see my favorite insect face again,” Troy said, his voice smooth, cold, and carrying a raspy, dry edge.

Troy paused, his gaze drifting slightly to his left.

With a casual flick of his gloved wrist, Troy reached behind his back and tossed a heavy, dripping object into the space between them.

*THUD.*

The object bounced once across the dry cobblestones, rolling to a stop right at Kyle’s boots.

Yua gasped, her red eyes widening in absolute shock, while Elara instinctively drew her aquatic daggers.

Lying in the dust was a freshly severed human head. It held sharp dark features, dark messy hair, and slitted dark eyes that stared lifelessly up at the sky—an exact, perfect, carbon-copy doppelgänger of Kyle Conner himself. Black, corrupted fluid leaked from the severed neck, identical to the fluid found inside the chimera puppets in the desert.

Kyle didn’t flinch. He looked down at his own dead face sitting in the dirt, then raised his gaze back to Troy, his expression completely unfazed.

”A doppelganger?” Kyle asked calmly, raising a single eyebrow. ”You’re getting creative with your welcoming gifts.”

”That thing has been roaming the eastern borders for three days pretending to be you,” Troy replied casually, resting his gloved hand on the dark scabbard of his pulsing golden sword. ”It took out two of my regional garrisons and spoke with your voice. It almost convinced my high council that the ’Shadow Lord’ had come back to burn the kingdom down.”

Troy took a slow step forward, his dark boots clicking against the stone floor as he looked at Kyle, Yua, Elara, and Seraphina in turn.

”The Spire has been busy, Kyle,” Troy continued, his smile fading back into his usual cold, sharp neutrality. ”They’ve been manufacturing blood puppets with your face, unleashing chimera swarms across my desert, and trying to force my hand into declaring an all-out holy crusade against the deep trench.”

”And did you?” Kyle asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet tone. ”Declare a crusade?”

Troy let out a low, dry huff through his nose, shaking his head slightly. ”Do I look like a fool who dances to the Spire’s fiddle? I chopped its head off, stuffed its body into an iron box, and waited for the real headache to walk through my front door.”

Troy gestured vaguely with his chin toward the open gates behind him, leading into the heart of the fortified capital.

”The real version of you is much harder to kill anyway,” Troy added, his cold eyes glinting with a strange, reluctant respect. ”Come inside, insect. We have things to discuss that don’t belong in the open sun.”

Kyle looked at the severed head at his feet, then at the young king standing before the open gates. The tension between them remained sharp enough to cut glass, but the underlying mutual understanding was clear: neither of them was willing to be a pawn in the higher realms’ grand design.

”Lead the way, Your Majesty,” Kyle said softly, stepping right over the doppelgänger’s head as he led his party straight into the Lumia Kingdom.
