Triple X System

The Great Banquet Hall of the Lumia Keep was usually a austere, military space stripped of ostentation. Since the onset of the corruption threats, the tapestries had been pulled down to make way for reinforced iron sconces, and long, plain pine tables had replaced the gilded mahogany of peacetime. Tonight, however, the air inside the grand hall hummed with a golden, triumphant warmth that the capital had not felt in years.

Dozens of iron braziers roared along the high perimeter walls, their dancing flames casting long, soft light across banners bearing the silver shield of King Troy. Long tables were stacked high with platters of seared mountain venison, roasted boars glazed with wild honey, roasted root vegetables, and crusty loaves of freshly baked rye bread. Pitchers of sweet plum wine and heavy dark ale flowed without restriction, passed around by young pages and off-duty royal guards who could finally set their heavy halberds against the stone pillars without fear of a sudden alarm bell.

Near the center of the head table, elevated slightly above the main floor, Yua was making good on her threat.

She sat with her boots unceremoniously propped up on an empty bench, a whole roasted boar leg held in her right clawed hand. Grease glistened on her chin as she tore a massive chunk of meat from the bone, washing it down with a deep swig directly from a silver pitcher of vintage plum wine.

”See?” Yua said, wiping her mouth with the back of her forearm, her sharp red eyes gleaming under the torchlight. ”I told you real royal food hits different than dried rations. That salted meat we were chewing on in the Obsidian Pass tasted like leather boots soaked in vinegar.”

”That ’leather’ kept your meridians from collapsing when you drained your blood-mana against the Arch-Lich,” Falcon said smoothly from the seat beside her.

Falcon was far more deliberate with her meal. She sat upright, her dark brown skin glowing under the warm torchlight, carefully slicing off lean pieces of roasted venison with a small silver knife. Her four dark brown tails were tucked neatly behind her chair, swaying in a gentle, contented cadence that mirrored the relaxed rhythm of her core. She took a slow, measured sip of pale apple cider from a crystal goblet, enjoying the crisp, sweet taste. ”Though I will admit... not having bone dust blowing into my drink every five minutes is a massive improvement.”

To Falcon’s right, Seraphina sat in full formal posture, though her silver shoulder guards and heavy pauldrons had been removed, leaving her in a simple, elegant dark tunic trimmed with royal blue silk. She chewed quietly on a piece of steamed herb bread, her deep blue eyes watching the bustling celebration across the main floor.

”The morale shift is real,” Seraphina observed softly, leaning toward Kyle, who sat at the center of the head table. ”Look at the guards by the eastern archway. Three days ago, their shoulders were locked with tension. They were waiting for the lower barriers to give way. Now... they look like men who believe they have a future.”

Kyle sat with a silver goblet of cold spring water in his right hand. He wore a plain, dark linen shirt under his dark coat, his pitch-black demon gauntlet resting quietly on his thigh beneath the table. His slitted dark eyes swept over the crowded hall—taking in the laughing guards, the busy servants, and Princess Lumia, who was standing near the lower tables, speaking warmly with a group of wounded veterans from the Iron Works garrison.

”Belief is cheap,” Kyle said quietly, his voice low and grounded. ”It breaks the moment the next spatial shift hits the barrier. But relief? Relief gives them time to rest their bones. They earned it.”

”You earned it too, Kyle,” a deep, gravelly voice echoed from his left.

King Troy walked over from the high dais, holding two heavy wooden tankards of dark ale. The king had shed his heavy plate armor for a thick leather tunic bearing the royal crest. His battle-scarred face looked ten years younger under the warm torchlight, the deep, exhausted lines around his eyes finally smoothed out by the day’s revelations.

He set one of the tankards down on the table in front of Kyle, stepping around the bench to sit beside him.

”The council chambers are clear,” King Troy reported, taking a long drink from his own tankard before setting it down with a heavy thud. ”Varos and Hallow are locked deep in the subterranean cell block. Before the guards even finished securing the doors, Hallow started singing like a songbird. He gave up thirty-seven names—quartermasters, lower log keepers, supply lieutenants, and two regional captains who were accepting blood-crystal bribes to look the other way when the ley-line conduits fluctuated.”

Kyle’s eyes narrowed slightly. ”Are they detained?”

”My personal guard rounded them up within two hours,” Troy answered, his jaw tightening with a cold, absolute resolve. ”No trials, no delays. Every officer connected to the leak has been stripped of rank and locked away. The supply lines to the Iron Works are completely purged. By tomorrow morning, my daughter will personally oversee the installation of new, loyal commanders at every primary node.”

”Good,” Kyle said, taking a quiet drink of water. ”If the foundation at home is rotten, climbing higher doesn’t matter. You’d just be leaving your back exposed.”

King Troy looked at Kyle for a long moment, studying the quiet, unyielding poise of the young Demon Knight. He remembered the boy who had first entered the keep—a skilled, guarded warrior with a dark element and a cold focus. Now, sitting before him, Kyle possessed a presence that was heavier than the royal throne itself—an authority forged in the fires of the lower realms and solidified by the power of the Spire.

”You aren’t staying long, are you?” Troy asked softly, his voice dropping so the surrounding guards wouldn’t hear.

”We leave tomorrow at dawn,” Kyle replied flatly. ”The portal in the subterranean archives is stable, but the first tier of the Spire is an active nexus. The longer we sit in the lower realm enjoying roasted boar, the more time we give whatever forces operate in the higher tiers to adjust to the master key’s activation.”

Falcon set her crystal goblet down, turning her head toward them. ”Kyle’s right. The Astral Warden construct back in the plaza scanned his authority. It recognized the key, but it also logged his core signature as a Tier 5 Demon Knight. A signal like that doesn’t just sit in a vacuum—it ripples up the lattice.”

”So the higher tiers already know someone claims the first key,” Seraphina added, her tone sharpening. ”And if Cassian was receiving commands or siphoning power from entities further up, they will know his connection was severed the moment his head hit the stone.”

Yua wiped her greasy claws on a napkin, letting out a dark, eager chuckle. ”Let them know. Let them line up at the gate. Saves us the trouble of hunting them down room by room.”

King Troy let out a deep, booming laugh that drew a few curious looks from the lower tables. He raised his tankard toward the four of them, his eyes shining with deep respect.

”To the champions of the Lumia Kingdom,” Troy declared, his voice echoing over the clinking of plates and the chatter of the hall. ”May your blades stay sharp, your cores stay steady, and your path through the Spire be carved in victory!”

”To victory!” Yua yelled back, smashing her silver pitcher against her empty plate with enough force to crack the pewter.

Falcon slapped Yua’s shoulder with a groan. ”Watch the tableware, you savage! We’re supposed to be guests!”

”I’m a demon brawler, not a lady-in-waiting!” Yua grinned, taking another massive bite of meat.

By midnight, the noise inside the Great Hall had died down to a gentle, steady hum. Most of the guards and staff had retired to their quarters, heavy with food and wine, while the night sentries took up their posts along the outer walls with renewed vigor.

Kyle walked alone along the high stone battlements of the central keep.

The night air was freezing, sweeping down from the mountain peaks surrounding the capital, but it didn’t bother him. The dark mana circulating smoothly through his expanded meridians kept his skin warm, his Demon Knight core maintaining a steady, effortless body temperature. He rested his gauntleted hands against the cold stone ramparts, looking out over the sprawling city of the Lumia Kingdom.

Below, the streets were quiet. For the first time in six months, the massive blue defense domes hovering over the city weren’t flickering erratically. They shone with a solid, unbroken light, stabilized by the purged ley-lines and the absence of the Blood Moon’s corruption.

Soft, measured footsteps echoed on the stone behind him.

Kyle didn’t turn around. ”You should be resting, Lumia.”

Princess Lumia walked up to the rampart, wrapped in a heavy, fur-lined white cloak that protected her from the biting mountain wind. Her silver-blonde hair fluttered in the breeze, and her pale blue eyes looked out over the glowing city beside him.

”I couldn’t sleep,” Lumia said gently, leaning her arms against the stone wall. ”Every time I close my eyes, I keep expecting the alarm bells to ring... expecting another report about a subterranean breach at the Iron Works or another guard patrol vanishing near the Dead Ravine.”

”The bells won’t ring tonight,” Kyle said quietly. ”The line is clean.”

”Because of you,” she said, turning her head to look at his profile. The moonlight caught the sharp edges of his jaw and the dark, slitted pupils of his eyes. ”When you vanished six months ago... half the council wanted to declare you dead. They wanted to close the archives, seal the lower vaults, and write off the Crimson Ridge as lost territory. My father refused, but even he was losing hope as the ley-lines began to decay.”

She reached out, her small, soft hand resting briefly on top of his heavy, metal-clad gauntlet.

”You didn’t just come back with a key, Kyle,” Lumia whispered, her voice filled with a deep, quiet emotion. ”You brought my father back his spirit. You gave this kingdom its future back.”

Kyle looked down at her hand, then met her blue eyes. His expression remained calm, grounded, but his voice carried a quiet sincerity. ”Your father held the line when he had every reason to break. The kingdom survived because its people didn’t stop fighting. I just cut down the thing that was leeching off your work.”

Lumia offered a small, radiant smile, pulling her hand back into her warm cloak. ”Modest as always. Seraphina told me a little about what lies beyond those golden doors. The grand avenue... the Warden Array... the higher tiers.”

”It’s a long road,” Kyle acknowledged, looking up toward the night sky, where the distant, towering silhouette of the Spire pierced through the clouds, glowing with a faint, ethereal light. ”We’ve only cleared the threshold.”

”Take care of yourself up there,” Lumia said softly, stepping back from the ramparts. ”And take care of Seraphina, Falcon, and Yua. The capital will be ready whenever you need to open that portal again. The Lumia Kingdom will always be your anchor.”

”I know,” Kyle said.

Lumia gave him a final, lingering look before turning and walking back toward the inner keep, her white cloak disappearing into the warm torchlight of the doorway.

Kyle remained on the battlements for another hour, standing motionless in the freezing wind as the silver moon climbed to its apex.

Inside his mind, he felt the calm, steady rhythm of his core. His spatial perception had expanded immensely since his breakthrough; he could feel the subtle threads of the Spire Key pulsing in his palm, connecting him to the distant, marble-paved avenue of the first tier, waiting for his return.

’Snow,’ Kyle thought silently.

’Host,’ Snow answered instantly, her presence a familiar, comforting anchor within his consciousness.

’Scan the portal connection in the archives. Ensure the spatial frequency remains locked while we sleep.’

’Portal connection is locked and fully stabilized,’ Snow reported smoothly. ’Energy bleed is zero. The transition route will remain open indefinitely until Host manually alters the spatial coordinates.’

’Good,’ Kyle said. He pushed himself off the stone rampart, turning back toward the quarters assigned to his team. ’Tomorrow, we step into Tier Two.’

He walked down the quiet, torch-lit corridors of the keep, his boots making a firm, steady sound against the stone. The lower realm was settled. The traitors were caged. The kingdom was safe.
