Triple X System

The heavy iron club of the goliath chimera lay scattered across the cave floor in a dozen jagged pieces, its dark purple fire fizzling uselessly against the ice.

Silence settled over the cavern, broken only by the howling wind outside and the ragged, shallow breaths coming from the back of the cave.

Seraphina didn’t waste a second. Kneeling beside Aurora, the ocean queen placed her glowing hands flat over the girl’s chest. Soft, swirling currents of deep-sea mana flowed from her palms, wrapping around Aurora’s body like a cooling blanket. The agonizing heat in Aurora’s veins began to subside as the dark purple lines crawling up her neck receded, turning into wisps of foul black steam that vanished into the frigid air.

Aurora let out a long, shuddering sigh, her trembling hands slowly coming to rest on her lap. Color slowly returned to her ghostly pale cheeks, though her eyes remained glossy with fatigue.

”The rot in her core is suppressed,” Seraphina said softly, her deep blue eyes reflecting the faint light of her trident. ”Her mana channels were severely inflamed from overexertion, but the corruption hasn’t touched her soul. She needs rest and clean air, not a battleground.”

Falcon let out a long, heavy breath, leaning his worn back against the stone wall of the cave. He slid down until his butt hit the cold ground, his good arm resting over his knee as he stared at Kyle. The veteran warrior looked like he had aged five years in six months—his beard was tangled with frozen mud, his heavy leather armor was torn to shreds, and his eyes carried the deep, hollow exhaustion of someone who had been running on pure stubborn willpower.

”I’d offer you a drink to celebrate your return, kid,” Falcon wheezed, forcing a rough, raspy laugh that ended in a quiet cough. ”But we ran out of clean water three days ago. All we’ve got left is ice and regret.”

Kyle walked over, his dark coat sweeping over the dirt as he crouched down beside the old soldier. He reached out, his gloved hand catching Falcon’s uninjured shoulder with a firm, grounding grip.

”Save your breath, old man,” Kyle said, his voice quiet but steady. ”You did your job. You kept her safe.”

Falcon looked at Kyle’s hand, then up into his slitted dark eyes. A strange, wry smile touched his weathered lips. ”Barely. A few more minutes and those giant tin cans would’ve turned us into wall decorations. You really took your sweet time getting back.”

”I got held up,” Kyle replied faintly.

Before Falcon could ask anything more, a high-pitched, metallic chime rang out from the small brass communication device strapped to Falcon’s chest belt. The device flickered violently, its internal mana crystal pulsing with a fast, urgent blue light before projecting a small, hazy projection of Reze’s face into the center of the cave.

Reze wasn’t wearing her usual playful smirk. Her short hair was messy, her lab coat was stained with dark grease, and the background behind her image showed the frantic motion of holographic monitors in her underground lab under the palace.

”Falcon! Aurora! Do you copy?” Reze’s voice came through the transmitter, laced with heavy static from the mountain storm. ”We lost your life-sign telemetry twenty minutes ago when the northern array glitched! Are you still—”

She cut herself off as her projected eyes focused on the tall figure standing in front of the transmitter.

”Kyle?” Reze blinked, leaning closer to her console on the other end. ”You actually made it up the ridge? That fast?”

”I’m here,” Kyle said, stepping into the frame of the projection. ”Falcon and Aurora are alive. Seraphina stabilized her core. What’s the situation at the palace?”

Reze let out a sharp breath, running a hand down her face. ”The situation at the palace is going to hell in a handbasket, and you’re the one who just pulled the trigger.”

Yua walked over from the cavern mouth, shaking fresh chimera blood off her long red claws, her eyes narrowing at the projection. ”What are you talking about, doctor? We just cleared the path. If anything, we did your lazy palace guards a favor.”

”I’m not talking about the beasts on the path, Yua,” Reze said grimly, her fingers flying across her physical keyboard off-screen. A series of complex readings and pulsing red charts replaced part of her projection. ”Look at these energy spikes. The moment Kyle crossed back into this world’s dimensional frame, the ambient beast mana across the entire northern and eastern territories didn’t just shift—it violently spiked.”

Kyle frowned, his brow furrowing. ”Spiked? Because of me?”

”Because of whatever dark core signature you’re carrying,” Reze clarified, her voice dropping into a tense, clinical tone. ”The corrupted puppets in the desert, the chimeras in the valley, the whole network... they aren’t just wild monsters acting on instinct. They’re connected to a central mana grid. And the second your presence registered on the land’s spatial fabric, that grid went into hyper-drive.”

The static on the line intensified for a second before another voice cut through the transmission—cold, smooth, and entirely unbothered by the crisis.

”It’s a reaction mechanism,” Troy’s voice echoed through the com-link from his private quarters in the palace. ”Whoever designed those blood puppets anticipated your return. The moment your soul-signature re-entered the realm, the central core activated its final phase.”

”Final phase?” Falcon asked, pushing himself up slightly against the cave wall. ”What final phase?”

Reze brought up a secondary schematic showing the subterranean ley-lines beneath the Lumia Kingdom. The thick veins of natural mana that usually glowed a calm, clear blue were now almost completely flooded with a dark, pulsing purple fluid.

”The corruption rate in the kingdom’s foundation just jumped from forty percent to eighty-two percent in less than an hour,” Reze explained, her voice dead serious. ”The mutated mana isn’t just trying to breach our walls anymore. It’s digging deep into the primary ley-lines right beneath the palace floor. It’s acting like a pressurized bomb.”

Kyle stared at the pulsing red numbers on the display. ”How long do we have before it detonates?”

”Forty-eight hours,” Reze answered bluntly. ”Two days. If we don’t sever the connection at its primary source within forty-eight hours, the subterranean ley-lines will suffer a total atmospheric inversion. The entire kingdom—the palace, the city, the outer farms, everything within fifty miles—will be swallowed by a void-rot explosion. There won’t even be ruins left to rebuild.”

Silence fell over the small cavern once again.

Aurora pulled her heavy woolen cloak tighter around her shoulders, her hands trembling slightly, while Seraphina stood tall, her gaze fixed on the projection with cold, regal intensity.

”Two days,” Yua muttered, a dark, dangerous grin tugging at her lips. ”That’s plenty of time to kill a few thousand monsters.”

”You can’t just slaughter your way out of this one, Yua,” Reze shot back through the link. ”I’ve run the numbers. There are over fifty thousand corrupted constructs scattered across the northern tundra alone. Even if Kyle unleashed his demon flames non-stop for forty-eight hours, the sheer volume of meat would delay you long enough for the subterranean core to detonate. You can’t trim the branches while the root is growing.”

”She’s right,” Kyle spoke up, his voice low and cutting through the panic. ”When you deal with blood puppets or high-tier constructs, chopping off limbs is a distraction. You have to find the controller. The figure holding the strings.”

”That’s the problem,” Troy’s voice chimed in again over the communication line. ”My royal mages and high scouts have scanned every inch of the northern territory for six months. We’ve used divine detection arrays, spatial sweeps, and elemental tracking. There is no massive aura signature out there. Whoever is controlling this horde is invisible to standard sensing.”

”They aren’t invisible,” Seraphina said calmly, stepping forward so her tall frame was visible to the projection device. ”They are simply hiding in a dead zone.”

Reze paused on her end. ”A dead zone?”

”In the deep ocean, when a high-tier abyssal creature wishes to hide its presence from the sovereign predators, it does not build a shield,” Seraphina explained, her voice carrying the quiet wisdom of an ancient realm. ”A shield creates energy friction, which can be tracked. Instead, it nests inside a natural rift where the ambient mana is completely dead—a void pocket where sensory magic collapses and washes out. If your scouts cannot perceive this controller, it is because they are standing right inside a spot your spells naturally gloss over.”

Falcon rubbed his stubbled chin, his bloodshot eyes narrowing as he thought back over his months of patrolling the northern terrain.

”A dead zone...” Falcon muttered softly. ”Wait. What about the Old Iron Works at the base of the lower glacier?”

Reze’s image flickered as she pulled up a regional map of the northern territory. ”The Iron Works? That place was abandoned fifty years ago during the first mining collapse. The entire cavern system is coated in natural mana-dross and heavy iron slag. Magic doesn’t work right down there.”

”Exactly,” Falcon said, pointing a dirty finger toward the map projection. ”It’s a giant dead spot. Whenever we chased chimera packs near the lower glacier, our tracking compasses would spin in circles and our comm-crystals would go dead. We always assumed it was just natural iron interference.”

Kyle looked at the map coordinates flashing on the display. The Old Iron Works sat deep within a subterranean fissure beneath the lower glacier—a dark, unmapped cavern system completely shielded from light, weather, and high-level sensory magic.

”It fits,” Kyle noted quietly. ”It’s close enough to direct the horde toward the kingdom’s ley-lines, but masked enough that Troy’s mages wouldn’t see anything on their high-altitude arrays.”

”Then that’s our target,” Yua said, her claws clicking together in eager anticipation. ”We head down into the old mines, find whatever ugly creature is sitting on that puppet throne, and rip its head off before Reze’s two-day timer runs out.”

”It won’t be that simple,” Reze warned. ”The structure down there is unstable. If you unleash high-tier area attacks inside those old iron tunnels, the whole glacier could collapse on top of you.”

”We’ll manage,” Kyle said firmly. He looked at the projection of Reze and Troy. ”Reze, send the exact subterranean structural maps of the Iron Works to my gauntlet interface. Troy, keep your defense forces focused on holding the eastern wall. Don’t let any of those puppets push past the outer perimeter while we’re underground.”

”Don’t tell me how to run my defense, insect,” Troy replied smoothly, though there was no malice in his raspy voice. ”Just make sure you cut the controller’s throat before my kingdom turns into ash. I have no intention of ruling over a crater.”

”Understood,” Kyle said.

With a single gesture, Kyle cut the communication link. The brass device on Falcon’s belt went dark, and the soft blue holographic light faded, leaving the cave illuminated only by the dim, gray reflection of the snow storm outside.

Kyle turned to look at his group.

”Falcon, Aurora,” Kyle commanded gently. ”Stay in this cave for now. Seraphina’s ocean barrier will keep the ambient cold and purple rot away from your channels. Once we clear the controller below, the pressure on your cores will lift.”

Aurora looked up, her blue eyes filled with worry. ”Kyle... be careful down there. Whoever set this trap... they’ve had six months to prepare for you.”

”Let them prepare,” Kyle said quietly.

Without another word, Kyle turned and walked out of the cave entrance, stepping out onto the icy ledge overlooking the vast, frozen expanse of the northern valley. Yua and Seraphina followed close behind, their footfalls silent against the hard snow.

The storm raged violently around them, howling wind whipping Kyle’s dark coat around his boots as he looked down toward the distant, dark fissure of the lower glacier where the Old Iron Works rested.

As Kyle stood at the edge of the cliff, gathering his focus before the descent, a quiet, familiar resonance echoed directly inside his mind.

’Host,’ Snow’s voice spoke, her tone perfectly calm, measured, and free of any emotional bias.

’I’m listening, Snow,’ Kyle thought back, keeping his face entirely still as he stared out into the white haze.

’I have completed a secondary logical audit of the operational data provided by the palace terminal,’ Snow reported internally. ’Specifically analyzing the timing of the beast mutations, the exact layout of the kingdom’s defensive blind spots, and the creation of the mimic.’

Kyle’s slitted dark eyes narrowed slightly beneath his dark bangs. ’What did you find?’

’The structural probability of an external entity achieving this level of tactical efficiency without direct internal intelligence is less than two point four percent,’ Snow explained calmly. ’The mimic possessed precise vocal frequencies, physical mannerisms, and palace clearance codes that could only be extracted from deep within the kingdom’s secure administration. Furthermore, the rapid acceleration of the corruption upon your return indicates real-time surveillance originating from within the capital’s inner perimeter.’

Snow paused for a fraction of a second before delivering her final conclusion.

’Host. The entity controlling the chimeras is not acting alone from the outside. The controller is being aided by an insider high within the Lumia Kingdom’s inner circle.’

Kyle didn’t react outwardly. His breath rolled off his lips in a steady, white plume, his posture remaining rigid and cold against the freezing wind.

Inside his mind, he didn’t express shock or surprise.

’I know,’ Kyle responded silently to Snow.

He recalled the strange, suffocating atmosphere inside the palace earlier—the cold emptiness in Lumia’s eyes, the guarded posture of Troy’s elite guards, the overly convenient timing of the mimic’s execution, and the strange, deliberate gaps in the kingdom’s defense logs over the past six months. Someone sitting near the throne had opened the door for the corruption, using Kyle’s absence to hollow out the kingdom from the inside.

’Should I flag potential suspect profiles for immediate confrontation?’ Snow inquired.

’No,’ Kyle thought back coldly, his hand tightening into a heavy fist as dark, pitch-black sparks of demon fire crackled softly between his gauntleted fingers. ’Not yet. If we make a move inside the palace now, the rat will panic and trigger the ley-line explosion early.’

He took a step off the ledge, falling smoothly into the dark expanse of the snowy valley below, with Yua and Seraphina dropping right alongside him.

’We kill the controller in the iron mines first,’ Kyle concluded silently, his dark blade manifesting in his grip as they plummeted toward the lower glacier. ’Once the threat to the kingdom is gone... I’ll find out who opened the gate.’
