Three Towers Game

Chapter 1318: Chapter 417: Night Terrors at the Monastery (Part 2)

”At this moment, how can you know this isn’t a prediction? He might have already figured out your habits.”

That’s true.

Reid’s words made Wen Xishu feel unable to refute.

Having experienced the night of Rokkasho and that night in Ghost City, Wen Xishu was very resistant to opening doors.

No matter how righteous or safe the sound outside the door seemed, he could not open it.

But previously, not opening the door was because you knew it was safe inside.

But now?

The half-head with only a chin and mouth continued to recite unknown and ancient incantations. Initially, the Balance was heavier on the right end because there was nothing on the left end.

But now, the Balance started to gradually—undergo a change.

The left end began to slowly sink, which implied something invisible seemed to appear on the left Balance tray.

Is that our souls, mine and Reid’s?

Is that something precious from me?

Is this a sacrificial ritual?

Is a proper monastery really like this?

Wen Xishu was also shaken. At that moment, Reid attempted to open the door.

As Reid’s hand touched the door, the being outside the door seemed to sense it too:

”Quick, open the door, open the door! Don’t delay! You see the Balance inside! Don’t let both ends weigh the same! Otherwise, you’re done for!”

His voice was somewhat urgent.

Wen Xishu could feel that if the left and right ends of the Balance were the same height, meaning both sides of the tray weighed the same... perhaps the ritual would end.

He had a little time left, but not much.

”Who are you? How can you appear in Pen Town?”

Wen Xishu asked.

Reid was not a fool; he also heard the urgency in the other’s tone, and at this moment, decided to wait for an answer.

”We are the exiles of the small town, listen to me, this town is extremely dangerous at night, but relatively safe during the day.”

”We can only hide in various places at night... only able to come out during the day.”

”Please, open the door quickly, the nun is the embodiment of the devil, you are sacrificing your souls! Once collected, she will kill us all at night!”

”Open the door quickly!”

Wen Xishu said:

”Alright, I’ll open the door.”

But saying so, Wen Xishu used Shadow to stop Reid.

”Yes, yes, yes, open the door quickly!” the voice outside was urgent and excited.

Wen Xishu’s Shadow couldn’t stop Reid, but Reid did not resort to violence.

Wen Xishu whispered to Reid:

”Reid, I don’t know what’s inside the door, but I know it’s definitely not good people outside the door.”

Reid still trusted Wen Xishu:

”Why, give me a reason.”

Wen Xishu softly said:

”No one in Pen Town can escape the ’Master of the Pen,’ we’re essentially adventurers who’ve broken into a story by the ’Master of the Pen.’

”The ’Master of the Pen’ can give various voice cues in our minds.”

”The ’Master of the Pen’ has said, only the bonfire can bring temporary safety; at any other time, it is unsafe.”

”Moreover, we were just recently hinted that Pen Town is just as dangerous during the day as at night.”

”These people, if they really are exiles, able to live in Pen Town this long, how strong would they have to be?”

”Why did they appear just as the nun brought us into the temple, why didn’t they show up when the bonfire was there?”

”Could people who survive long-term in Pen Town not push open a wooden door?”

These words made a lot of sense.

Reid was in complete agreement.

But this weird ritual seemed equally frightening, and Reid was not inclined to believe it was a good ritual.

He already felt that as the ritual continued, the temple inside had started to feel chilly.

Something bad would certainly be born.

”Open the door quickly! Do you really want to die?! Still doubting us!”

The voice outside was increasingly urgent.

Wen Xishu contemplated a question.

”In the second stage, Reid was right, the Master of the Pen anticipated my anticipation... the two-headed monster made me feel disgusting...”

”But perhaps the Master of the Pen didn’t expect that due to the bottom head frequently hitting the ground, its eyeball would burst.”

”In this stage, the Master of the Pen would certainly predict that I would realize this is a choice question, picking a side...”

”It looks strange inside, but outside seems safe, which would actually increase the likelihood I’d choose to stay inside.”

”After all, I’ve been through such a scene, where outside safety is just a temptation.”

”But what if... the Master of the Pen is also well-versed in this?”

Previously, Wen Xishu had been speculating whether the Master of the Pen was some horror story creator.

If it truly is, then this kind of binary-choice script, the Master of the Pen must be very familiar with.

To open the door or not to open the door?

Moreover, why this time, had the Master of the Pen not conveyed any rules via voice to the brain, but completely relied on the nun to articulate them?

Wen Xishu seemed to subtly have an answer.

”Because the Master of the Pen himself plays the role of a truthful narrator; he said not to ignore the voice, the voice is correct; people with their own thoughts often die quickly.”

”But this time, the Master of the Pen did not provide a voice.”

”I get it, he did it on purpose, because if the phrase left by the nun had come from the Master of the Pen, this stage would have been very easy.”

”After all, you only need to mindlessly believe in the Master of the Pen.”

”So, it requires the nun to say that phrase, making players potentially lose trust in that phrase.”

”Of course, there is indeed a possibility that the phrase is false.”

Wen Xishu recalled the words previously spoken by the nun:

Don’t open the door, no matter what you hear, don’t open the door. The ritual has begun, if you want to survive, just listen to me. Don’t open the door, the Evil Spirit outside will do everything possible to kill you; as long as you don’t open the door, you will pass the test and proceed to the next bonfire spot. And receive a blessing.

He closely examined these words, suddenly realizing that there was a lot left unsaid.

Wen Xishu suddenly laughed.

Reid was stunned:

”Bro, if you don’t open the door, the ritual will be completed! Why are you laughing now?”

Wen Xishu said:

”Yeah, but we’ll die if we open it too; there’s a head above and below, it’s the same as the second stage. Isn’t it?”

Reid asked:

”Do you have a solution?”

Wen Xishu said:

”Yes, I noticed that in the nun’s words, there’s no mention of the ritual itself. It only says the ritual has started. It only says that we’ll pass the test if we don’t open the door; it does not say we cannot interrupt the ritual, right?”

Reid was taken aback:

”Huh? What do you mean?”

Wen Xishu approached the Balance, at this point, the side with nothing was starting to level with the side with half a head.

The knocking on the door outside was getting more frantic:

”The ritual is about to complete, open the door quickly! Don’t let us all die!”

”Do you intend to sacrifice to the monastery?”

Wen Xishu ignored them.

All the voices, including the incantations, were distractions to cloud judgment and made people agitated.

Only with calmness could a solution be found.

At that moment, Wen Xishu directly made a bold decision; he took that half-head from the right end of the Balance...

The Balance instantly became unbalanced, and the half-head stopped chanting.

”The outside mentioned a rule, saying when both ends are equally heavy, the ritual completes, so just let them be unequal.”

Nothing unexpected happened.

When Wen Xishu took the constantly chanting half-head off the right end of the Balance, the left end immediately sank to the bottom.

”Open the door, we’ll die.”

”If we don’t open the door, and the ritual completes, the nun will kill us. Indeed, just like a cult, not like any proper monastery.”

”Therefore, we can’t open the door or let the ritual finish. This stage can be passed.”

Wen Xishu tossed the half-head to the ground and stomped on it hard. The stomp was so powerful, even the teeth shattered.

Reid suddenly laughed too:

”Damn, it can be done like this! I got so annoyed by the voices from both sides, just kept thinking about which side to choose, turns out I could choose neither side!”

The dark monastery suddenly had light.

The voice outside also became anxious.

The light came from the bonfire.

Wen Xishu and Reid sat around the new bonfire, feeling comforted.

The voice from outside spoke again:

”Actually, I’m really an exile, but this term can be understood as being exiled to this place as the deceased. After all, I can’t survive until the end as an adventurer, I can only play the roles within.”

”Congratulations, it seems you are calm and logical people, although there is no Master of the Pen intelligence here, you will receive a blessing, but the intelligence of the Master of the Pen is in the next... classroom.”

”May you survive, may you discover the secret of Pen Town.”

After speaking, the being outside ceased to speak, seemingly vanished.

Yet in the minds of Wen Xishu and Reid, a voice appeared:

[Really well done, congratulations on surviving again, now you’ve got ten points, if you can pass the next challenge, you’ll be the first in Pen Town’s history to amass sixty points.]
