The sky darkened as the arrows fell. Thousands of black streaks tore through the air.

“Shields!”

Chen Yu shouted as the soldiers reacted almost instinctively. Iron plates rose, forming a rough wall of metal.

A heartbeat later, the storm struck.

Clang.

Arrows hammered against shields with brutal force. Some struck armor and glanced away. Others slipped through gaps and buried themselves in flesh.

Men cried out.

Two soldiers beside Chen Yu collapsed instantly.

Chen Yu raised his shield, but his hands trembled so badly the metal rattled against his arm.

Arrows struck it again, again and again.

Each impact ran through his bones.

For a moment he thought the shield would be torn from his grip.

Holes deepened, the shield could no longer endure the arrows.

Suddenly, Chen Yu fell backward onto the soil as he felt someone pull him back.

Then a big fat shadow of a silhouette appeared in front of him.

Guda stood at the front.

Chen Yu watched his back, as Guda’s shield took the impact, then his shield broke as well, the arrows directly hit him, blood flowed out.

Chen Yu froze and was not able to move.

Then the storm ended.

For a moment, no one moved.

“Charge!”

Across the battlefield, General Hecta’s voice cut through the chaos like a blade.

War horns roared and the army surged forward.

Guda fell on the battlefield on his back as Chen Yu watched from behind, then Chen Yu’s eyes wandered around the Han Defu unit.

The old man, the soldiers who were with him, the people who searched for the bread, almost all of them were dead.

He looked at his trembling arm and then at Guda who lay a few steps away.

Yan arrived at them, and said, ”Stand up, the battle is not over.”

Chen Yu looked at Yan, then at the sword beside him.

”I will kill them.”

Chen Yu grabbed the sword and ran with the others as thousands of boots thundered across the ground.

Dust rose into the air as the two armies collided once more.

Steel clashed, Men shouted.

Horses screamed somewhere deeper in the battle.

Chen Yu swung his sword clumsily.

One enemy soldier fell.

Another rushed him.

Blades met. Sparks flashed.

The battlefield swallowed everything, noise, fear, confusion.

Yan moved somewhere among the soldiers nearby, calm and silent, but Chen Yu barely noticed.

Time passed in broken fragments.

Then, as the sun lowered toward the horizon, the horns sounded again.

Retreat.

Both armies slowly disengaged.

Soldiers staggered back toward their lines, breathing hard. Chen Yu moved with them.

Only when they reached the rear of their formation did he finally stop.

He bent forward slightly, resting his hands on his knees as he tried to steady his breathing.

His hands still shook, the arrow storm and the faces of his dead comrades lingered in his mind.

Then he felt it. A gaze.

Chen Yu slowly lifted his head.

The battlefield was already clearing. Dust drifted across the fading light. Soldiers moved like shadows in the distance.

And on a low rise far across the field, someone stood watching.

He was tall but stared at Chen Yu.

Even at that distance, the man’s presence felt sharp. His eyes were fixed on Chen Yu, ignoring the battlefield and retreating armies.

Chen Yu’s stomach tightened. The man slowly raised one hand and for a moment Chen Yu thought he was signaling someone.

But the hand simply extended and a finger pointed.

Directly at him.

The gesture was calm and certain as if marking prey.

Chen Yu felt cold.

Before he could react, retreating soldiers moved between them. The line of sight vanished and the man was gone.

Chen Yu remained where he stood for a moment longer, his hands beginning to tremble again.

So it wasn’t random.

Those arrows…

They had been meant for him.

Far across the battlefield, where the Shin army was withdrawing, he imagined the figure still standing there.

Chen Yu clenched his sword tighter as his voice came out low, but firm, he looked at Yan.

“Watch…”

Yan stood several steps behind him.

Chen Yu did not turn.

“I am going to take his head.”

For a moment neither of them spoke as Yan followed the direction of Chen Yu’s gaze where the army was retreating.

Then a quiet pulse of spiritual qi spread through Yan’s body, the flow of energy within him shifted.

His realm broke through to the Spiritual Qi Foundation Third Layer.

When Chen Yu returned to his tent, he was greeted by a bread placed on his desk.

Memories surfaced.

”Commander, Thank you for helping me search for the parcel.”

”Who expected it to be the old man?”

”Take it, here is the promised bread.”

The face of the fat man was still fresh.

”Chen Yu, I saw you yesterday being frozen and afraid... Don’t be afraid.”

”I am not going to die young, I will outlive you.”

”Thank you... Thank you... Commander, I will feed you lots of bread.”

”Also, Commander, after today’s battle, come with me to my house, Mimi invited you again.”

Chen Yu grabbed the bread, and sat on a chair, he took a bite as tears ran through his eyes.

They were flowing continuously without a stop.

”Commander.”

Outside the tent, a soldier arrived.

Chen Yu immediately wiped his tears and said, ”Come in.”

After about five minutes, Chen Yu and the soldier hurriedly left the tent.
