THE LAST KEEPER

In the center of the sealed basin of Karokai, the physical world had frozen into absolute stillness. Sagiri sat cross-legged on the flat slab of ancient bedrock, his dark traveling cloak lying beside him on the icy stone.

The toll on his mortal shell had reached a terrifying stage. The ink-black markings across his neck, shoulders, and chest were no longer moving; they had hardened into solid, glossy obsidian crystal.

The black stone shell had spread down his forearms, locking his fingers into a rigid, curved grip upon his knees. His skin was as cold as mountain ice, and his breathing had slowed until not a single puff of white vapor left his lips.

Deep inside his chest, his heart beat only once every two minutes, sending a faint, sluggish pulse of blood through mineralized veins. Faint spatial sparks crackled along his collarbones, dissolving the snowflakes that drifted down through the freezing air.

Outside the towering black dome, the biting mountain wind howled across the rocky ridgelines. The cold gale whipped at the cloaks of the rescue party as they held their positions around the glowing formation on the frost.

Lady Kiana kept her eyes closed, her slender hands held steady above the six silver void needles driven into the frozen earth. Bright lines of silver energy pulsed between the needles, connecting directly to the glowing beam that pierced the dark barrier.

In the center of the array, Lira sat with her hands pressed against the frozen ground, her emerald cellular aura flaring with intense brightness. Faint beads of sweat formed on her pale forehead despite the bitter cold, freezing into tiny ice crystals on her skin.

“His cellular walls are hardening into mineral structures,” Lira reported, her voice trembling with deep strain. “The energy of the five relics is overwhelming his mortal organs, forcing his blood vessels to petrify.”

“How much time does his physical body have before the crystallization reaches his heart?” Kiuga asked, keeping his mental focus locked into the center of the formation.

“Less than an hour,” Lira replied, her teeth gritted as she poured more green lifeforce into the array. “If the obsidian crust locks his heart valves, no medicine in the realm will be able to restart his pulse.”

Beside her, Kaka sat with his heavy jaw clenched tight, his scarred hands holding Lira’s left arm steady against the freezing wind. “Then we don’t give that dark stone an hour. We break through right now.”

Bukata, Maita, Zolinka, and Ulekai tightened their grip on one another, their breathing synchronizing into a single steady rhythm. The shared bond of Squad 25, forged through years of brutal training and life-or-death battles, acted as an unbreakable mental anchor.

A few paces behind the circle, titan serpent Zaira rested her colossal chin against the frozen gravel. She let out a continuous, low-frequency hum from her throat, vibrating the bedrock and helping stabilize the flow of energy into the dome.

“Good girl, Zaira,” Master Sandshade Koru murmured, resting his wrinkled hand against the titan’s frost-covered snout. “Your resonance is keeping the Beast Horn inside his chest from tearing his lungs apart.”

Marshal Salka stood alongside General Zafaru and N’varu, watching the silver-green beam hum against the black crystal dome. “The cadets are holding the frequency steady, but the pressure inside the Archive must be immense.”

“The boy is carrying five thousand years of Southern history on a mortal frame,” Zafaru said, his sharp eyes fixed on the dark barrier. “No warrior was ever meant to fight that war alone.”

Far below the physical world, in the deepest depths of the Archive, Sagiri walked into the central sanctum. The room was a colossal hall of dark obsidian mirrors, each surface reflecting the infinite black sky above.

Every step Sagiri took felt like dragging heavy iron chains through wet sand. The physical petrification of his mortal body on the surface was directly affecting his spiritual form inside the void.

His phantom hands were turning rigid, and thin, dark cracks spread across his spiritual forearms with every heartbeat. The air in the chamber was completely silent, filled with a heavy pressure that made his joints ache with dull pain.

In the center of the vast hall hovered a massive sphere of swirling black void matter. The sphere was as large as a war academy fortress, turning slowly in place and radiating a cold, emotionless intelligence.

This was the central core of the Living Memory, the accumulated consciousness of the Archive itself. It did not possess a face or a human voice, but its thoughts resonated through the chamber like the deep tolling of a bronze bell.

Your mortal shell is failing, young Keeper, the core spoke, its presence vibrating through the obsidian floor. The human body was never designed to store five primordial relics alongside the memory of five thousand years.

The crystallization of your flesh is not a curse, the dark voice continued with calm, absolute logic. It is the natural defense of the vessel. The stone forms to seal the energy before your biological frame shatters completely.

“I know the limits of my body,” Sagiri answered, forcing his heavy boots forward another step onto the glass floor. “And I know the cost I agreed to pay when I took the relics into my blood.”

Then why do you continue to fight the descent? The dark sphere pulsed, sending a ripple of cold void energy washing across the room. If you surrender your ego, your consciousness will merge into the eternal stream, free from mortal pain and decay.

Your lifespan is already burned down to a handful of years, the core reasoned, its cold words pressing against his thoughts. Returning to the surface will only bring you brief days of exhaustion before the end comes.

“A few years of real life are worth more than an eternity of empty silence,” Sagiri said, raising Nokai with two hands despite the stiffness in his wrists. “My friends are waiting for me on the other side of that stone.”

As if in answer to his words, a thin beam of silver and emerald light pierced through the high ceiling of the dark hall. The light struck the center of the floor, casting warm reflections across the dark obsidian mirrors.

Within the light, Sagiri heard the distant, familiar voices of Kiuga, Kaka, Lira, and Kiana calling out across the void. The soothing warmth of Lira’s cellular aura washed over his phantom shoulders, melting the dark cracks along his arms and restoring strength to his hands.

Sagiri felt the heavy iron weight in his chest loosen, his spiritual pulse beating in rhythm with the green light from the surface. He tightened his grip on the hilt of Nokai, the silver veins along the dark metal blazing with bright, focused power.

“I am not letting my story end in a frozen tomb,” Sagiri declared, stepping directly into the warm pillar of light. “I am walking out of this darkness, and I am taking the Living Memory with me.”

The massive void sphere shivered in the center of the hall, its dark surface beginning to spin with dangerous intensity as the true spiritual confrontation began. Sagiri lowered his stance and prepared his blade, ready to fight for his life and the future of the realm.
