THE LAST KEEPER

The night air over the northern foothills was bitterly cold, carrying the sharp scent of pine resin and coming snow.

Two leagues ahead, the massive black stone walls of Galka War Academy rose against the starry horizon, their high watchtowers lit with glowing yellow lanterns.

The southern caravan had halted for a brief midnight rest in an open stone quarry, giving the tired draft beasts water before the final ascent to the gates.

Near the central fire, Kaka sat on an overturned wooden crate, furiously sharpening his battleaxe with a coarse whetstone that threw bright sparks into the dark.

”If the gate guards make us wait for inspection like common merchants, I am going to chop the iron bar in half,” Kaka growled, his northern jaw set in a stubborn clench.

”That is forty-eight threats of violence today, Kaka,” Kiuga chimed in without looking up from his parchment, his tongue clicking in mock calculation. ”I am submitting a formal expense report to the War College to cover the doors you break.”

”Keep running your mouth, Kiuga, and I will use your skull as my new sharpening stone,” Kaka barked, glaring across the fire with pure northern fury.

”Both of you shut up before I throw boiling stew in your faces,” Maita snapped from the wagon, crossing his arms with an irritable scowl. ”My head is pounding and your barking is making it worse.”

”Wait, are we at Galka already?” Ulekai asked, blinking sleepily as he stumbled over a bucket. ”I thought this was where we buy mountain cheese.”

Bukata let out a low groan from inside the wagon, pressing his bandaged ribs. ”Someone please tie Ulekai to a tree before he wanders off a cliff.”

A short distance away from the noisy fire, beneath the cold shadow of a granite boulder, Sagiri sat cross-legged upon a flat stone.

He had removed his dark travel coat, wearing only a loose black shirt that hung open at his throat.

Across his chest, collarbones, neck, and jawline, the ink-black markings on his skin were glowing with an ominous, boiling violet light.

The dark runes were no longer merely shifting; they were writhing violently beneath his flesh, spreading like jagged fractures of cracked obsidian across his arms and wrists.

Every time his heart beat, a trail of dark steam rose from his skin, hissing softly as it met the freezing mountain air.

Sagiri pressed both palms against his knees, his teeth grinding together as he fought to suppress the chaotic turbulence raging inside his core.

The Five Relics were vibrating out of control, pulling at his spirit channels like wild beasts trying to rip free from their cage.

As he closed his eyes to force his breathing into rhythm, his consciousness was suddenly seized by a terrifying, icy grip.

The physical world dissolved in an instant.

Sagiri opened his eyes to find himself standing in the center of a vast, pitch-black hexagonal void where millions of floating memory shards drifted in dead silence.

Standing ten paces in front of him, resting upon a throne of black spatial glass, was a figure that made Sagiri’s breath turn to ice.

It was his own reflection.

The dark entity wore Sagiri’s exact face and sovereign coat, but his eyes were completely black without pupils, and ink-black markings covered every inch of his pale skin.

Sagiri knew this presence.

Years ago, during the crucible trials of Galka and the bloody night his heart was pierced, this very entity had whispered in the deep shadows of his soul, demanding he surrender his body to slaughter his enemies.

”It has been a long time, little Keeper,” the darker version spoke, his voice echoing with the chilling weight of a thousand forgotten graves.

The dark reflection stood up from the glass throne, walking toward Sagiri with slow, mocking steps that sent black ripples through the floor.

”Look at you,” the dark entity sneered, tilting his head with cold amusement. ”A sovereign of five realms, yet your mortal shell is cracking like dry clay.”

”You are still locked behind the seal,” Sagiri said coldly, standing his ground as Nokai’s silver light flared along his spine. ”You have no power here.”

”The seal?” The darker version laughed—a hollow, terrifying sound that rattled the hexagonal void. ”The seal broke the moment you absorbed five gods into your fragile blood.”

The dark reflection stepped closer, pointing a black-clawed finger directly at Sagiri’s chest where the dark markings were leaking obsidian smoke.

”For sixteen years, you fought to protect these pathetic mortals,” the dark entity hissed, his black eyes blazing with boundless scorn. ”And for what? So they can smile for a season before they sharpen their spears for the next slaughter?”

”They chose peace,” Sagiri countered, his voice ringing with fierce resolve. ”We broke the cycle of blood.”

”Humanity is the cycle of blood!” the dark voice roared, expanding into a colossal shadow that towered over Sagiri. ”The Living Memory has watched them burn this earth for ten thousand years! They deserve only total silence!”

The dark entity leaned down, whispering directly into Sagiri’s ear with suffocating, seductive malice.

”Give me the shell, Sagiri,” the dark version urged softly. ”Let go of your pain. Let the Five Relics burn away your mortal weakness, and together we will cleanse this rotten world in black fire.”

”Never,” Sagiri answered firmly, his dual-colored eyes igniting with radiant silver void light. ”This vessel belongs to the people I love. As long as I draw breath, you will stay in the dark.”

The dark reflection sneered, stepping back into the shadows as the hexagonal void began to crack like brittle ice.

”Your eighteenth year is only weeks away, Keeper,” the dark entity warned with chilling certainty. ”Your mortal blood cannot hold us. When your vessel shatters, the void will claim what is ours.”

Crack!

The vision shattered violently, and Sagiri was violently thrown back into the physical world.

He fell forward onto his hands and knees, gasping for air as a brutal spasm tore through his lungs.

The ink-black markings across his jaw and chest burned with blistering heat, glowing molten red as they spread further down his ribs.

Around his shaking hands, black spatial cracks tore through the air, shattering the granite stones beneath his palms into fine dust.

Sagiri coughed violently, spitting a thick mouthful of pitch-black obsidian blood that sizzled against the cold dirt.

”Sagiri!”

A frantic voice broke through the haze of pain as Lira rushed across the clearing, dropping to her knees in the dirt beside him.

Her face was pale with terror as she saw the black spatial cracks tearing the ground around his trembling body.

”Sagiri, look at me!” Lira cried, her emerald healing light exploding from her hands as she desperately pressed her glowing palms against his burning chest.

Kiuga and General Zafaru sprinted over from the fire, drawing their weapons as they saw the dark steam rising from Sagiri’s throat.

”Stand back, Kiuga!” Zafaru warned, his weathered face tight with dread as he recognized the ancient sign. ”His relic core is overflowing!”

Lira ignored the warning, pouring every ounce of her cellular vitality into Sagiri’s chest to cool the boiling markings on his skin.

”Breathe, Sagiri... please, look at me,” Lira pleaded, tears streaming down her cheeks as she held his trembling shoulders against her chest.

Sagiri forced his eyes open, looking into Lira’s tear-filled grey eyes as her cool healing warmth gradually quieted the raging fire in his veins.

The black spatial cracks flickered and died, and the molten red runes slowly faded back into dark, quiet ink along his neck.

”I am here, Lira,” Sagiri whispered faintly, resting his heavy forehead against her shoulder as he caught his breath. ”I am alright.”

Kiuga knelt beside them, his sharp eyes taking in the pool of obsidian blood on the stones and the terrifying markings on Sagiri’s neck.

For the first time since they had met, the endless chatter died in Kiuga’s throat, replaced by a grim, heavy silence.

Looking toward the distant towers of Galka, Kiuga tightened his grip on his blades, realizing that their greatest battle was no longer against Lanka—it was against the very power keeping their leader alive.
