THE LAST KEEPER

The sensation of falling was not accompanied by the rush of wind or the pull of gravity. Instead, Sagiri plummeted through a boundless cosmic expanse of pitch-black emptiness, where space folded inward upon itself in endless geometric patterns.

Around him, monumental hexagonal planes of iridescent obsidian floated in the void, their edges glowing with cold silver light. Every facet of the colossal crystal walls reflected fragments of lost eras, flickering like distant stars trapped within a subterranean sky.

Deep within his spiritual core, the five absorbed relics flared in violent agitation. The Golden Spear, the Beast Horn, the Living Stone Hammer, the Silver Mask, and Nokai burned like trapped stars, threatening to rip his soul into separate pieces.

Sagiri tried to draw a breath, but there was no air within this metaphysical fathom. The sheer density of accumulated time pressed against his chest with crushing weight, threatening to dissolve the fragile boundaries of his mortal consciousness into raw cosmic dust.

Millions of overlapping whispers swirled through the darkness, echoing in languages that had vanished from the continent before the first stone of Galka was laid. They were the unfiltered voices of the Living Memory, crying out in sorrow, fury, and unquenched vengeance.

”So this is the true belly of the Archive,” Sagiri thought, gritting his spiritual teeth as he forced his phantom limbs to steady. ”Not a sanctuary of wisdom, but a bottomless graveyard of unresolved grief.”

He extended his right arm, summoning the ancestral authority of Nokai to manifest twenty floating blades of silver-veined darkness. The ethereal weapons arranged themselves into a tight orbital shield around his descent, cleaving through the swirling vortex of phantom memories that sought to drown him.

Every time a memory shard struck the barrier, a sharp shockwave of foreign emotion surged into his mind. He felt the burning heat of ancient cities crumbling beneath black fire, the agony of forgotten warriors falling in forgotten wars, and the bitter tears of mothers weeping over scorched earth.

The sheer volume of historical suffering threatened to erode his identity, pulling at the seams of his thoughts until his own name felt distant and strange. He could feel the cold void gnawing at his edges, tempting him to surrender to the peaceful oblivion of the abyss.

”Do not let go,” he told himself, channeling the heavy earth density of the Living Stone Hammer into his spiritual frame. ”If I lose my grip on who I am now, there will be nothing left of me to return to the surface.”

Far below his descending form, the darkness shifted with a slow, terrifying intelligence. A vast consciousness stirred within the deepest floor of the hexagonal chasm, opening an ancient gaze that had witnessed the birth and slaughter of five civilizations.

The Dark Void Entity did not speak with a physical voice, yet its presence resonated through every fiber of Sagiri’s spirit like the grinding of tectonic plates. It watched the young Keeper with cold amusement, mocking the foolishness of a mortal shell daring to plunge into eternity.

Why do you struggle to preserve a vessel already condemned to ash? The dark presence echoed through the void, causing the surrounding crystal pillars to shudder. You swallowed five primordial gods to win a petty mortal war, burning away your own lifespan until only embers remain.

You have no future upon the sunlit earth, the voice whispered, wrapping around his mind like cold coils of liquid shadow. Surrender the relics to their primordial cradle, child of N’folu, and sleep peacefully within the eternal silence.

”My life was never meant to be hoarded like gold in a miser’s vault,” Sagiri answered aloud, his voice carrying the sonic resonance of the Beast Horn. ”I chose to burn so that the people behind me could walk in the morning light.”

He focused his concentration on the ancient bedrock of Karokai Valley, feeling the faint terrestrial anchor connecting his physical flesh to the stone far above. The cold granite cradle held his mortal shell steady, granting his soul the stable foundation it needed to withstand the crushing mental tides.

Meanwhile, leagues to the southwest, the frozen silence of the northern mountains was shattered by the thunder of galloping hooves. A rescue party rode hard across the treacherous snowfields of Kovura Pass, tearing through the biting gale with relentless speed.

Kiuga rode at the vanguard on a massive northern warhorse, his sharp eyes fixed upon the distant horizon where dark storm clouds swirled over the jagged peaks. Beside him, Kaka urged his heavy mount forward with furious shouts, his twin battleaxes rattling against his iron saddle.

”Push the horses harder!” Kaka bellowed into the freezing wind, his breath pluming like white smoke in the morning chill. ”If that idiot thinks he can lock himself in a hole and die without my permission, I’ll drag his soul back by his hair!”

”The terrain ahead is collapsing into unstable spatial rifts,” Kiuga warned, checking the coordinates on his leather map case while keeping his horse steady on the icy gravel. ”General Senraki’s experiments weakened the regional bedrock, and Sagiri’s relic discharge is causing secondary tremors.”

Behind them, Lady Kiana rode atop a swift sand-strider, her dust-rose eyes glowing with bright silver luminance beneath her traveling hood. She held her slender hand raised toward the northeast sky, tracking the high-frequency void pulses echoing from the Silver Mask fused within Sagiri’s bloodstream.

”The barrier is already fully formed,” Kiana reported, her clear voice carrying through the whistling wind to reach the squad. ”He has driven Nokai into the primordial bedrock of Karokai, erecting an impenetrable hexagonal dome of spatial crystal around the entire central basin.”

”Can your void arts pierce it, Lady Kiana?” Maita asked, riding close on her left flank with his twin daggers secured tightly against his chest. ”If the barrier is made of Nokai’s pure essence, ordinary siege engines will shatter on impact.”

”The Silver Mask shares the primordial frequency of the Five Relics,” Kiana replied, her expression resolute and calm amidst the storm. ”I cannot break the dome from without, but I can weave an astral bridge that will allow our spirits to cross into his consciousness.”

Lira rode beside Kiana on a gentle white mare, her small hands clutching the reins while her fingers remained wrapped around the hand-carved wooden shyflower pendant. Her emerald cellular aura flared softly beneath her winter cloak, warming her trembling fingers against the bitter mountain frost.

”He left this for me because he believed he was never coming back,” Lira whispered softly, looking down at the delicate wooden petals in her palm. ”He carried the pain of the entire continent on his shoulders, never asking any of us to share the load.”

”That ends today,” Bukata growled from the rear, riding alongside Zolinka and Ulekai despite the heavy linen bandages tightly binding his cracked ribs. ”Squad 25 never leaves a brother behind, especially when he’s being too stubborn for his own good.”

”Look at the northern ridgeline!” Zolinka called out, pointing his gloved hand toward the towering black peaks rising above the pine forests. ”The sky over the valley is turning pitch-black!”

High above the jagged spires of Karokai, a massive dome of black crystal pierced through the gray mountain clouds, reflecting the pale morning sun like polished obsidian. Around the outer base of the barrier, the colossal form of titan serpent Zaira was visible, coiled tightly against the glass while letting out mournful roars.

Back within the depths of the hexagonal abyss, Sagiri’s spiritual descent finally slowed as his boots touched solid ground. He landed upon a vast, floating platform of translucent dark glass that hovered over an endless sea of swirling cosmic mist.

The physical world felt infinitely distant now, but within his spirit, the flame of defiance burned hotter than ever. Sagiri looked up into the infinite black sky of the Archive, where colossal geometric arches rose like the ribs of an ancient leviathan.

Before him stood a monumental hexagonal gate forged from dark spatial glass and pulsating with crimson memory runes. Beyond the threshold lay the winding, spectral expanse of the River of Dead Generations, where thousands of ancient phantoms awaited the arrival of the Last Keeper.

Sagiri gripped the hilt of Nokai, the silver veins along the dark blade glowing with steady, unwavering brilliance. He adjusted his stance upon the glass platform, feeling the weight of his shortened mortal life settling into his bones without a trace of regret.

”I am Sagiri of N’folu, Supreme Chief of the South and cadet of Squad 25,” he declared into the empty cosmic void, his voice ringing with absolute clarity. ”I did not come here to drown in your darkness. I came to master it.”

The monumental gate shivered in response to his proclamation, and the heavy doors slowly swung inward, releasing a tempest of ancient memories that surged forward to meet him. With steady steps and an unyielding heart, Sagiri crossed the threshold into the trial of generations.
