THE LAST KEEPER

The suspended platform of dark blades touched down upon the frozen scree of the Bleeding Gorge with a muffled scrape of living steel.

Sub-zero mountain gales swirled through the canyon floor, carrying the sharp tang of copper, burned alchemical oil, and dying metal from the subterranean vents.

Sagiri stepped onto the bloodstained shale, his dark cloak torn and stiff with frozen blood, carrying Kiana in his arms before setting her gently onto her boots.

Behind them, Zaira’s massive obsidian bulk coiled along the eastern cliff base, her crimson eyes scanning the perimeter as the 10 Sandshades drove the remaining Soulless remnants into the distant rocky ravines.

The Sandshades established an outer perimeter along the canyon ridge, their crescent scimitars humming as they watched the smoking blast gates of the collapsed stronghold.

At the granite overhang, Kaka and Maita instinctively raised their notched weapons, their jaws tightening as they recognized the pale face and slender frame of the Apex Soulless.

”Sagiri, get away from her!” Kaka bellowed, his heavy war axes trembling in his blood-caked grip. ”That silver ghost threw Lira into the pillar with enough force to shatter granite!”

”Lower your steel, Kaka,” Sagiri commanded, his voice cutting through the wind with steady, sovereign authority.

”The dark seal has been broken with the blood of the Archive,” Sagiri continued, stepping between his companions and the trembling girl. ”She is Kiana of the Sekana Clan, and she is the only one who can save Lira’s life.”

Maita lowered his short-swords slowly, his sharp eyes darting between the shattered fragments of the porcelain mask and the tears still drying on Kiana’s cheeks.

”She better work a miracle, Keeper,” Kaka grunted, his voice cracking with raw exhaustion as he stepped aside. ”Because Lira has less than a minute left in this world.”

Beneath the shadowed rock shelf, Kiuga slumped back onto his heels in utter defeat, his hands trembling violently as the faint golden glow around his fingers flickered and died.

Lira lay motionless upon the makeshift field litter, her lips tinted a pale, chilling blue and her shallow chest barely lifting beneath her torn tunic.

”Her left lung has collapsed completely,” Kiuga whispered, his voice hoarse from crying out commands. ”The fractured ribs severed her secondary pleural artery, and blood is filling her chest cavity faster than I can seal it.”

Kiana dropped to her knees in the blood-soaked snow beside the dying girl, her dust-rose eyes instantly dilating as she attuned to the intricate vascular and nerve network of the human vessel.

Without the dark bio-neural seal suppressing her consciousness, the ancestral wisdom of the 4th Tribe surged through her slender fingers with effortless, natural grace.

She unclasped her leather bracers, drawing twelve fine silver needles that hummed with a soft, moonlight resonance, radiating gentle warmth rather than void cold.

”Hold her shoulders flat against the litter,” Kiana spoke, her voice clear and precise despite the tremor in her chest. ”Do not let her spine shift by a millimeter while the needles navigate the pleural wall.”

Kiuga and Maita immediately took their positions, pressing their calloused hands against Lira’s collarbones to anchor her fragile body against the frozen earth.

Kiana inhaled a deep, steadying breath, her pale hands blurring into the intricate, legendary hand seals of the Silver Loom of the Sekana.

The first three needles pierced the vital nerve clusters beneath Lira’s left shoulder, bypassing the skin without spilling a single drop of blood to clamp the severed pleural artery with anti-relic tension.

A soft gasp escaped Lira’s blue lips as the internal hemorrhaging instantly halted, locked in place by the microscopic silver threads woven between the needle points.

”The arterial bleed is secured,” Kiana murmured, sweat beading on her pale forehead as she guided the remaining nine needles along the fractured 4th and 5th ribs. ”Now we must draw the stagnant blood from her lung before the cellular rot sets in.”

She twisted the central silver needle with surgical dexterity, creating a miniature void vacuum that drew the dark, pooled blood outward through the hollow conduit of the needle shaft.

Blackened, stagnant blood hissed as it drained onto the frozen shale, relieving the suffocating pressure that had been crushing Lira’s heart for the past half hour.

”Her lung is expanding again,” Kiuga gasped, watching the color slowly return to Lira’s neck with wide, disbelieving eyes. ”The bleeding has stopped, but her cellular warmth is fading fast.”

”Her vital pulse is exhausted from the trauma,” Kiana said, turning her urgent gaze toward Sagiri. ”My needles can only repair the physical vessel. I need the primordial fire of the N’folu to reignite her life pulse.”

Sagiri knelt beside Kiana, placing his uninjured right palm directly over Lira’s sternum.

He closed his eyes, plunging deep into the boundless reservoir of the Archive to summon the gentle, restorative currents of ancient memory.

Golden-silver light flared beneath his skin, flowing down his arm and diffusing through the twelve silver needles embedded in Lira’s chest.

For the first time in sixteen centuries, the two primordial arts of the southern founding tribes worked in perfect, unbroken harmony: the surgical path-walking of the Sekana guiding the infinite life-giving vitality of the N’folu.

The golden currents traveled along the silver threads, knitting torn muscle fibers, fusing bone fractures, and warming the freezing blood in Lira’s veins.

The deep purple bruising across her ribs began to fade beneath the radiant glow, replaced by the healthy, flush tone of living flesh.

A sudden, violent tremor ran through Lira’s body, her back arching slightly off the field litter as a sharp reflex tore through her lungs.

She coughed hard, expelling a final clot of dark blood onto the snow before drawing a deep, shuddering breath of freezing mountain air.

Her chest rose and fell in a steady, unbroken rhythm, the faint rattle completely gone from her throat.

Slowly, her dark eyelashes fluttered open, her golden-brown eyes blinking against the pale twilight sky above the canyon.

”Sagiri...?” Lira whispered, her voice faint and raspy, but clear and full of living warmth.

”I am right here, Lira,” Sagiri answered softly, his stern expression melting into a rare, relieved smile as he kept his hand gently on her shoulder.

Kaka let out a booming northern roar that echoed against the canyon walls, dropping his heavy war axes and wiping his eyes with the back of his filthy iron gauntlet.

”She is breathing!” Kaka laughed, clapping Kiuga on the back with enough force to nearly knock the exhausted medic into the snow. ”By the gods of the northern peaks, the little bird is alive!”

”Don’t you ever scare us like that again, Lira,” Ulekai sniffled, trying to hide his tears behind a gruff scowl. ”Or I will make you carry Kaka’s spare war axes for the next six months.”

Maita grinned from ear to ear, sitting down hard on a nearby boulder as the overwhelming adrenaline of the past hour finally washed out of his limbs.

”You did it, Kiuga,” Maita said with a breathless chuckle, wiping sweat from his forehead. ”You actually kept her soul inside her ribs.”

”It was not me,” Kiuga replied, turning an awe-struck gaze toward Kiana. ”That needle art was unlike anything taught in the ten medical academies of Tagayia.”

Zolinka leaned against the cliff wall, tossing his empty potion satchel aside with a weary sigh. ”I thought we were going to bury another sister in these northern rocks today.”

Lira turned her head slightly to the side, her gaze falling upon Kiana, who remained kneeling in the snow with her head bowed and her hands trembling against her knees.

Lira looked at the delicate, tear-streaked face of the girl who had nearly killed her, sensing no malice or void coldness radiating from her aura, only deep, sorrowful remorse.

Weakly, Lira lifted her trembling right hand, reaching out across the field litter until her cold fingers brushed against Kiana’s pale knuckles.

”Your hands...” Lira whispered with a gentle, faint smile. ”They’re not cold anymore. You’re warm now.”

The simple, unconditional forgiveness in Lira’s voice shattered the last remnants of Kiana’s emotional restraint.

Tears spilled freely from Kiana’s dust-rose eyes as she gripped Lira’s fingers in both hands, bowing her forehead against the edge of the field litter in weeping gratitude.

”I am sorry...” Kiana sobbed, her voice muffled against the cloth. ”I am so sorry for what I did to you...”

”You saved her life, Kiana,” Kiuga spoke gently, placing a hand on the young Sekana girl’s shoulder. ”That makes you one of us now. Squad 25 doesn’t hold debts against family.”

A few paces away, chained against the cold granite wall, Rika watched the tearful reunion with a hollow, devastated gaze.

Seeing the pure loyalty of the squad, the miraculous harmony between the N’folu and Sekana arts, and the absolute forgiveness granted to Kiana, the bitter jealousy that had consumed Rika’s life for decades completely unraveled into weeping remorse.

Her shoulders slumped against the stone, her tears washing away the soot on her cheeks as she realized how blind she had been to the true meaning of the Keeper’s burden.

Zaira coiled her massive head closer to the shelter, her hot breath keeping the biting freezing gale from chilling the recovering girl. Her golden-scaled crest lowered in gentle deference to the restored Keeper.

Before anyone could speak further, a deep, rhythmic shudder rippled through the bedrock beneath their boots, followed by the muffled roar of subterranean explosions within the mountain.

Plumes of black smoke and purple alchemical fire surged violently from the drainage flues of the Bleeding Gorge, signaling the final collapse of the deep facility.

Sir Black’s hidden empire was burning to the ground, and the time had come to uncover the final, dark truths buried in the ashes of the mountain.
