THE LAST KEEPER

The northern harbor was filled with the rich smell of roasting boar and burning pine wood.

After three weeks of bitter siege and biting wind, the dark storm clouds over the sea had finally broken, letting warm morning sunlight wash across the victory camps.

More than one hundred thousand warriors from every corner of the continent celebrated together on the stony beaches, their ancient clan feuds set aside in the wake of Lanka’s fall.

Northern heavy shield-bearers sat side by side with southern spearmen, sharing flagons of sweet spiced cider while Tisaro archers laughed around blazing bonfires with Kafika huntresses.

Across the calm blue bay, colossal titan serpent Zaira rested her massive armored coils in the shallow water, lazily sunning her back while southern handlers gently washed her scales.

Near the central pavilion, Squad 25 gathered around a long wooden table piled high with steamed honey bread, roast venison, and wild mountain berries.

”I counted fourteen different veins bulging on your old man’s forehead when he signed the treaty, Kaka,” Kiuga rambled on, dipping a piece of flatbread into garlic broth without pausing for breath. ”Statistically speaking, his blood pressure could have launched a catapult bolt across the fjord.”

Kaka slammed his heavy wooden flagon onto the table, rattling the bowls as his fierce northern brow drew into a dark scowl.

”Say one more word about my father’s forehead, Kiuga, and I will smash your head through this bench,” Kaka snarled, ripping a chunk of roast venison with his teeth. ”He signed with northern honor! Try insulting the Asakana clan again and see if you have teeth left to chew your bread.”

”Both of you shut your mouths,” Maita snapped, glaring over his bowl with sharp, irritable eyes. ”My ears are still ringing from the explosion in the core, and now I have to listen to you two barking like mangy camp hounds.”

”Wait, was Grand Zorath Zaka actually angry?” Ulekai asked innocently, blinking with a completely blank expression as he scratched his chin. ”I thought his face was just twitching because he had a fly on his nose.”

Beside him, Bukata leaned heavily against the wooden post, his broad chest and right arm wrapped in thick linen bandages soaked in herbal salve.

”Ulekai, your head is stuffed with wet straw,” Bukata groaned, wincing as he shifted his bruised ribs. ”A boulder could fall on your toe and you would wonder if it was raining.”

Sitting on a soft wool cushion near the center of the table, Lira wore a clean white and green tunic, her cheeks rosy and full of life once more.

She used a small silver pestle to grind dried shyflower leaves into soothing tea, her misty grey eyes occasionally drifting toward the head of the table where Sagiri sat in silence.

Beside her, Kiana held a warm pastry with both hands, taking small, careful bites as her dust-rose eyes watched the squad’s loud bickering.

”Is the pastry good, Kiana?” Lira asked softly, leaning in with a gentle smile.

Kiana nodded slowly, a faint, rare smile touching her lips. ”It is very sweet. In the underground laboratories, food was only cold gray paste that tasted of bitter iron.”

Lira’s gaze softened with deep tenderness, and she poured a cup of fresh flower tea, sliding it gently into Kiana’s hands. ”You will never have to taste that poison again, Kiana. Eat as much sweet bread as you want.”

At the head of the wooden table, Sagiri rested his chin against his palm, quietly watching his companions argue beneath the open northern sky.

He had removed his heavy armor and dark cloak, wearing only a loose black linen shirt with an open collar that fluttered in the sea breeze.

Along his jawline, down the side of his neck, and spreading across his collarbones, the dark, ink-black markings on his skin shifted slowly, slithering like liquid shadows beneath his flesh.

Whenever he drew a breath, the intricate runes pulsed with faint silver and amber light, humming quietly to the rhythm of Nokai resting against his spine.

Across his forearms and wrists, the black lines curled like delicate roots, reacting constantly to the immense metaphysical weight of the five primordial relics sleeping within his blood.

”Look at the Supreme Chief,” Kiuga said, immediately turning his endless chatter toward Sagiri. ”He sits there looking like an ancient statue while forty allied captains are lining up outside the pavilion just to ask for his autograph on their war banners.”

”Let them drink and celebrate,” Sagiri replied with a dry, calm smile. ”Our people have bled for sixteen long years. They do not need speeches from me today.”

”To the Last Keeper!” Kaka roared, raising his carved horn cup with proud, towering arrogance. ”And if any southern clan says otherwise, I will personally break their knees!”

”To Squad 25!” the rest of the table chorused, clinking their cups together with a loud cheer that drew laughs from passing southern soldiers.

Sagiri raised his wooden cup with them, taking a slow sip of the sweet berry wine before setting it back onto the weathered cedar planks.

To everyone watching, he looked completely calm and unburdened—the victorious young sovereign who had shattered a tyrant’s kingdom and united an entire continent.

Yet beneath his ribs, a fierce, agonizing heat was slowly burning through his marrow.

Every time his heart beat, a sharp tremor shot outward from the five primordial relics fused into his bloodstream.

The Golden Spear, the Beast Horn, the Living Stone Hammer, the Silver Mask, and Nokai were locked in constant, chaotic resonance, rapidly consuming his mortal vitality from the inside out.

Sagiri kept his left hand hidden beneath the table, clenching his fist until his knuckles ached as a sudden wave of dizziness washed over his vision.

He closed his eyes for a split second, forcing his breathing to remain steady while willing the dark markings on his neck to stop their erratic pulsing.

When he opened his eyes, he found Lira staring directly at him, her brow furrowed with quiet concern as a faint green light flickered at her fingertips.

”Sagiri?” Lira called out softly, setting her tea bowl aside and leaning closer across the table. ”Are you in pain? Your face looks pale.”

”I am fine, Lira,” Sagiri answered in a gentle, reassuring tone. He reached out and lightly brushed the back of his fingers against her hand. ”The sea voyage was long, and the northern cold gets into old bruises. That is all.”

Lira looked down at his hand, feeling the strange, intense heat radiating from his skin, but the soft warmth in his crimson eyes helped ease the tightness in her chest.

”You must drink this warm tea,” Lira insisted, placing a fresh cup into his palms. ”It has dried mint and root nectar. It will settle your stomach and restore your cellular warmth.”

”Thank you, Lira,” Sagiri said with a faint chuckle, taking the steaming cup and drinking it down to reassure her.

After the meal, Sagiri walked toward the edge of the southern camp where the desert banners fluttered in the breeze.

Waiting near a cluster of pine trees were General Zafaru and Elder Koru, the white-eyed Master Sandshade standing with his hands tucked into his wide black sleeves.

General Zafaru dropped to one knee in formal salute, but Elder Koru simply stepped forward, his pupil-less white eyes staring straight into Sagiri’s chest.

”You can hide your pain from northern boys and young maidens, Supreme Chief,” Koru said bluntly, his raspy voice dropping low. ”You cannot hide it from these eyes.”

Sagiri paused, crossing his arms as the black markings along his neck pulsed with a sharp, burning heat beneath his collar. ”Speak plainly, Elder.”

”The Five Relics are devouring your mortal lifeforce,” Koru murmured, pointing a bony finger toward Sagiri’s chest. ”Your spirit channels are boiling with relic fire. The markings on your throat are leaking black steam.”

General Zafaru rose quickly to his feet, his weathered brow furrowing with deep alarm. ”Supreme Chief... is this true?”

”It is the price of absorbing the relics without six months of seclusion in the Hellpool,” Sagiri answered quietly, keeping his voice low so the nearby guards would not hear. ”My body is holding, but the strain is heavy.”

”You are not marching straight to Thazir in this condition,” General Zafaru said with firm loyalty. ”The main Southern Host will march south to guard the desert borders, but I will not leave your side.”

”Neither will the Sandshades,” Koru added, his white eyes narrowing with ancient resolve. ”N’varu and our ten fastest scouts will ride with you. We must take you and the wounded Bukata directly to Galka War Academy.”

”The Endless Pool beneath Galka is the only water in the realm that can soothe the relic burn in your blood,” Zafaru urged. ”Squad 25 will travel with us to protect your rear.”

Sagiri looked toward the camp where Kiuga was currently lecturing Kaka while Zolinka helped Bukata onto the padded wagon, with Lira and Kiana walking alongside them.

He knew Zafaru and Koru spoke the truth; his body was reaching its absolute breaking point, and Bukata needed Galka’s advanced medical chambers to heal his shattered ribs.

”Very well,” Sagiri agreed with a soft sigh. ”We ride for Galka at dawn. But not a word of my condition to the others. They have suffered enough.”

”As the Supreme Chief commands,” Zafaru said, placing his fist against his breastplate in a solemn vow.

Later that evening, as the celebratory banquets moved toward the blazing campfires on the dunes, Sagiri found a solitary moment away from the crowd.

He stepped behind a tall granite boulder near the tree line, the calm mask on his face cracking the instant he was alone.

A suffocating wave of pain tore through his chest, forcing him down onto one knee in the cold dirt.

The ink-black markings across his jaw, neck, and collarbones flared with blinding, violent light, twisting and writhing beneath his skin like searing molten wire.

He pressed a trembling hand over his mouth, his entire frame shuddering as a violent, hacking cough tore through his throat.

When he pulled his hand away, his palm was coated in thick, pitch-black blood that sizzled faintly against the frosted pine needles.

A cold, ancient voice echoed from the bottomless abyss of the Living Memory, whispering directly into his soul.

’Your eighteenth year draws near, mortal shell...’ the dark voice murmured, heavy with the weight of forgotten centuries. ’Mortal blood cannot carry five stars forever. The vessel is fracturing... and the dust must return to dust.’

Sagiri wiped the obsidian blood from his mouth, his crimson eyes burning with fierce, unyielding resolve as he forced his shaking legs to stand.

”Not yet,” Sagiri whispered into the darkness, clenching his fists against the searing fire in his bones. ”I still have to see them safely home.”

He channeled a pulse of soothing silver void energy through his spirit pathways, forcefully quelling the chaotic relic vibrations until the black runes receded quietly beneath his shirt.

Smoothing down his dark coat, Sagiri took a deep, steady breath and walked back toward the warm light of the campfires.
