The Conquerors Path

Chapter 1077: Chapter 1075 — The Sapphire Gardens

The pearl staircase seemed to stretch endlessly upward, winding through the silent, glowing heart of the Sunken Throne.

We ascended away from the sprawling courtyard, leaving the thousands of kneeling, incredibly powerful maids far below us in the ambient, breathable air-pocket. As we crested the final landing, the architecture dramatically shifted. The wide, dry corridors of polished dark crystal abruptly ended, opening into a breathtaking expanse of flooded archways. The ocean reclaimed its territory here, the crushing, freezing black water pressing heavily against the towering pillars of pale moonstone.

“The spatial displacement field does not extend into the gardens.”

Krave announced, her voice echoing softly off the immaculate crystal walls.

“The flora requires the raw, unfiltered pressure of the deep-tide currents to survive. I hope you do not mind maintaining your control, Austin.”

Krave added, turning her head to look at me with a serene, unreadable expression.

“It’s fine.”

I replied mildly, slipping my hands into the pockets of my heavy coat.

We drifted into the Sapphire Gardens.

It was a staggering achievement of deep-sea bio-alchemy, vastly superior to the forced, arrogant botanical sanctuaries we had seen in Aethel-Lira. The gardens were not grown in terrariums. They flourished wildly in the open trench. Massive, twisting vines of pure, crystalline sapphire crawled up the obsidian walls, blooming with flowers woven entirely from trapped abyssal starlight. The blossoms pulsed with a slow, rhythmic, neon-blue luminescence, casting ethereal, shifting shadows across the dark water.

“This is fundamentally impossible.”

I noted, analysing the elemental structure of the glowing vines as they brushed harmlessly against the exterior of my spatial barrier.

“Starlight cannot penetrate this depth. You have managed to harvest the conceptual memory of light from the surface and bind it to deep-earth minerals.”

I observed, genuinely moved by the sheer, staggering scale of the magical engineering.

“I had a significant amount of free time.”

Krave smiled faintly, her dark eyes reflecting the soft blue glow of the flowers.

The hyperactive, aggressively manic tourist who had gleefully dismantled the central bank was completely gone. In her place was a quiet, absolute sovereign. She did not skip or bounce. She walked with a slow, liquid grace, completely in tune with the crushing silence of her domain. She was shedding the chaotic persona she wore in the mortal empires, revealing the ancient, terrifyingly majestic entity beneath.

“I am entirely tired.”

Luna projected directly into my mind, breaking the profound, serene silence of the gardens. And I knew why, while she acted all well, what she had to do before coming to me made her more tired than normal.

The silver wolf was draped heavily across my shoulders, her chin resting flat against my collarbone. She did not bother looking at the breathtaking fields of woven starlight. Her silver eyes were half-closed, her stomach still visibly distended from the colossal amount of seared wyrm tenderloin she had consumed on the caldera cliffside.

“We are surrounded by glowing rocks and freezing water. It doesn’t matter much to me. Austin, locate the best place to rest.”

Luna demanded, her telepathic voice thick with lethargy.

“We are approaching it now, Luna.”

I murmured, steering our spatial bubble down a wide, twisting path of crushed obsidian.

A dozen of the Imperial-level maids trailed silently behind us, keeping a perfectly respectful distance of exactly thirty paces. They did not speak, and their movements disturbed absolutely zero water. I could feel their powerful auras hovering at the edge of my perception, a constant, highly lethal honour guard.

“The maids are highly efficient.”

Luna noted, her ears pitching backwards slightly to track their silent movements.

“They radiate the distinct pressure of apex predators, no threats yet always focused; that’s a good instinct to have, only formed by the best of the best in hunting.”

The wolf evaluated, her tone shifting from complaints to a rare, clinical approval.

“Only the best of the best can get the right to work under me. Do you even know how hard it is to even meet me?~”

I confirmed quietly.

“Arrogant but truthful.”

Luna purred, her muscles visibly uncoiling.

For an apex predator born in the surface forests, Luna spent her entire existence operating on a baseline of perpetual vigilance. Even when she slept, a fraction of her intent was always monitoring the environment for threats or prey, so she could understand.

She was ready to succumb to the food coma.

We arrived at the end of the Sapphire Gardens. Carved directly into the sheer, monolithic cliff face of the trench was a massive set of double doors forged from deep-sea diamond and pale pearl.

The doors swung inward without a sound as we approached, responding automatically to Krave’s ambient authority.

We stepped out of the flooded gardens and into the Sapphire Suite.

I immediately recognised why El, the head maid, had hurried ahead. The massive, sprawling bedchamber was a masterpiece of localised comfort. The walls were lined with soft, glowing moon-coral, emitting a gentle, warm light. In the centre of the room rested a colossal, circular bed constructed entirely from deep-earth obsidian, piled high with thick, incredibly soft layers of crushed velvet-kelp.

The room possessed its own spatial displacement field, identical to the courtyard. The water was held back, leaving a massive, dry air-pocket that smelled faintly of ozone and ancient stone.

I seamlessly collapsed my personal barrier.

“Finally.”

Luna groaned, completely abandoning her usual feline grace.

The silver wolf practically rolled off my shoulders, hitting the smooth crystal floor with a heavy thud. She dragged herself across the room, hopped onto the massive obsidian bed, and collapsed onto the mountain of crushed velvet-kelp. She circled exactly once, let out a long, highly toxic burp that sparked with faint purple light, and buried her snout beneath her paws.

“I require absolute silence.”

Luna commanded, her silver eyes slipping shut.

“If the world ends, do not wake me. Only wake me if there is meat.”

The wolf added, her breathing instantly slowing into a deep, rhythmic, heavy slumber.

“She is a creature of incredibly simple, highly destructive priorities.”

Krave laughed softly, watching the massive predator instantly lose consciousness.

“That she is.”

I corrected mildly, adjusting the lapels of my heavy coat.

I turned my attention to the doorway. El and a dozen of the Imperial-level maids stood silently in the hall, their heads bowed, waiting for further instructions.

“You may retire to your sectors, El.”

Krave instructed, her voice dropping into that smooth, sovereign register.

“Ensure the outer perimeter wards remain dormant. We require no magical interference tonight. I will attend to my guest personally.”

Krave commanded, waving her pale hand in a gentle, dismissive gesture.

“As you command, Sovereign.”

El murmured, bowing deeply.

The head maid did not question the order, though I caught the microscopic flicker of profound surprise in her glowing blue eyes. The maids stepped backwards, melting seamlessly into the shadows of the dark crystal corridor. Within seconds, their terrifying, world-shaking auras faded entirely from my perception.

The heavy, deep-sea diamond doors swung shut with a soft, pneumatic click.

The heavy, chaotic dynamic that had defined our entire journey through the deep-tide empires instantly vanished. There were no arrogant bankers to defraud. There were no master chefs to humiliate. There were no guards to bypass, and there was no sarcastic, gluttonous wolf demanding to be fed.

For the first time since we plunged into the ocean, Krave and I were completely, utterly alone.

The atmosphere in the room shifted.

It was a sudden, palpable transition. The air felt incredibly still, charged with a quiet, undeniable intimacy. The vast, echoing scale of the empty kingdom pressed against the heavy doors, amplifying the profound isolation of the suite.

“It is strange.”

Krave whispered, breaking the heavy silence.

She turned away from the sleeping wolf, walking slowly toward a massive, arched window of deep-sea glass that looked out over the black, uncharted trench.

“I have spent millennia surrounded by thousands of attendants, and yet, this palace has never felt anything but empty.”

Krave confessed softly, resting her pale fingers against the cold glass. I slipped my hands into my pockets and walked across the room, coming to a halt beside her.

“Attendants provide service, Krave. They do not provide companionship.”

I observed quietly, looking out into the absolute darkness of her private ocean.

“They worship you. They fear you. A god cannot share a silence with her worshippers without it feeling like an interrogation.”

I added, my voice perfectly calm, carrying a steady, resonant frequency designed to anchor the sudden vulnerability in the room.

“You do not fear me.”

Krave murmured, turning her head to look at me.

Her dark eyes were incredibly wide, completely devoid of the sharp, predatory amusement that usually defined her expression. In the soft, warm light of the moon-coral, she looked impossibly ancient, yet strikingly, devastatingly human.

“I find you highly entertaining.”

I replied mildly, holding her intense gaze without blinking.

“I have heard the legends about you, the things you have sacrificed and protected; it must not have been easy for that. I respect you. The fear you created was to protect the waters, right?”

I noted a faint, barely perceptible smile touching the corner of my mouth.

A soft, genuine breath of laughter escaped her lips. The tension in her shoulders visibly melted away. She turned fully toward me, stepping slightly closer. The physical proximity was entirely deliberate. The distance between us closed to a matter of inches, the ambient warmth of her divine aura brushing gently against my own passive defences.

“Would you walk with me, Austin?”

Krave asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

“I wish to show you the rest of the empty kingdom. Without the wolf demanding a snack, and without the maids hovering in the shadows.”

She requested, her dark eyes searching my face with a quiet, magnetic intensity.

“I would be honoured.”

I replied smoothly, offering a polite, minimalist nod.

I did not offer her my arm as I would in a high-society setting, and she did not link her arm through mine in her usual, manic tourist fashion. The dynamic had shifted too deeply for those performances. We simply turned together, stepping away from the massive arched window and walking toward a secondary set of pearl doors that led deeper into the private wing of the palace.

We stepped out into a sprawling, cavernous hallway constructed from polished obsidian and woven starlight.

The silence in the corridor was absolute. Our footsteps echoed softly against the dark crystal, a steady, rhythmic cadence that seemed to fill the massive space. We walked shoulder-to-shoulder, close enough that the heavy fabric of my coat occasionally brushed against the sheer, midnight-blue sea-silk of her gown.

“The architecture here is older than the geological formations of the upper trenches.”

I murmured, analysing the sheer, terrifying density of the mana woven into the walls as we passed beneath a towering archway.

“It was built before the continents shifted on the surface. Before the first Mermaid emperor learned how to forge abyssal iron.”

Krave confirmed, her voice echoing gently through the vast hall.

“I used to walk these corridors and listen to the tectonic plates grinding against each other. It was the only sound loud enough to reach the throne.”

She confessed, a profound, heavy melancholy bleeding into her tone.

“It is a beautiful cage.”

I observed quietly, glancing at the flawless, glowing crystal surrounding us.

Krave stopped walking.

She turned to face me in the centre of the massive, empty hallway. The playful, chaotic entity who had gleefully ruined a multi-million platinum tea ceremony was completely gone. The woman standing before me was a god who had been trapped in the freezing dark for thousands of years, entirely alone with her own absolute power.

“It was.”

Krave whispered, taking a single, slow step closer to me.

“But it feels significantly less like a cage tonight.”

She murmured, her dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the ambient temperature in the corridor noticeably rise.

The banter had fallen away completely. The sarcastic deflections were gone. We were standing in the absolute, silent depths of the ocean, surrounded by an impossibly vast, empty palace, and the subtle, undeniable romantic shift in our dynamic finally settled heavily into the space between us.

“Then let us continue the tour.”

I replied softly, holding her gaze, entirely unwilling to break the quiet, profound tension currently bridging the gap between a world-class chef and the ancient queen of the deep.
