The Conquerors Path

Chapter 1069: Chapter 1067 — The House of Odds

We left the Vault of Tides entirely undisturbed, carrying nothing but the profound satisfaction of knowing we had just inflicted a generational psychological attack upon the Mermaid royalty.

“I am still thinking about the steering wheel, Austin; they polish it. You could smell the abyssal wax. They actively maintain the rust.”

Krave giggled, the sound echoing softly within the confines of my perceptual filter as we drifted back into the chaotic, glowing sprawl of the financial district.

“Delusion requires a significant amount of upkeep.”

I replied mildly, steering us away from the administrative sector and back toward the commercial heart of the Golden Turtle.

“I just want food.”

Luna reminded us, her stomach letting out a low, ominous rumble that vibrated against the back of my neck.

‘Well, taking care of a world-eating wolf ain’t cheap.’

“Patience, we are going to buy the most expensive meal in the ocean. But first, I need to ensure the aristocracy can no longer afford it.”

Krave promised, her eyes scanning the towering, heavily warded structures lining the platinum promenade.

She stopped walking, her gaze locking onto a massive, sweeping building forged from polished black pearl and inlaid with veins of liquid gold. There were no windows. The entrance was flanked by two towering statues of Leviathans, their open jaws serving as the primary archway. Unlike the Abyssal Bourse, which radiated the frantic, sweaty energy of desperate commerce, this building exuded a quiet, absolute, suffocating arrogance.

“The House of Odds, the highest-stakes casino in the deep-tide empire. The Bourse is where the merchants gamble with commodities. This is where the Mermaid nobility gamble with their bloodlines.”

Krave announced.

“I assume the games are heavily biased.”

I said, analysing the thick layers of localised spatial magic surrounding the structure.

“The house always wins, Austin. It is a mathematical certainty enforced by supreme probability mages. Which is exactly why I want to play.”

Krave said.

I let out a soft breath of amusement.

“Naturally.”

The interior of the House of Odds was a masterpiece of sensory manipulation.

The air was artificially chilled to keep the patrons alert, yet heavily saturated with the scent of fermented pearl-wine and roasted deep-sea lotus—an aroma specifically designed to lower inhibitions. The lighting was meticulously crafted, casting the gaming tables in brilliant, focused light while leaving the surrounding walkways shrouded in intimate, luxurious shadows.

The casino floor was suspended over a massive, localised thermal vent. The ambient heat rising from the grate created twisting, ghostly currents in the water, adding a layer of surreal, slow-motion grace to the movements of the patrons.

Krave didn’t even glance at the lower-tier tables where minor barons were betting pouches of gold. She marched directly toward the raised, heavily warded obsidian dais at the absolute back of the room.

This was the apex predator enclosure.

Only one table occupied the dais. It was constructed from a single, flawless slab of deep-sea diamond, identical to the material used in the Emperor’s vault. Seated around the table were three Mermaid nobles. They were draped in heavily enchanted kelp-silk, their long, iridescent tails coiled elegantly beneath their high-backed chairs. They wore the bored, heavy-lidded expressions of immortals who had entirely run out of things to care about.

Standing at the head of the table was the dealer—a six-armed triton wearing a featureless silver mask.

“Tide-Casting, the purest game of chance in the empire. The dealer drops three highly enchanted pearls into a localised, violently randomised gravity funnel. You bet on the exact spatial coordinates where the pearls will finally settle. The odds of perfectly guessing all three are roughly one in seven hundred thousand.”

Krave murmured to me as we approached the dais.

“And the house manipulates the funnel.”

I observed, peering past the physical diamond to watch the flow of mana.

“Exactly, the dealer uses microscopic blood-pact runes woven into his fingertips to subtly alter the water density right before the pearls land, ensuring the house sweeps any substantial wagers.”

Krave whispered.

“I will handle the water.”

I promised softly; they looked up with expressions of mild, arrogant curiosity.

“This table has a minimum buy-in, fifty thousand platinum. I suggest you return to the slot-corals on the lower floor.”

The wealthiest-looking noble stated. He was a pale, sharp-featured Mermaid lord with a terrifying array of jagged coral spikes woven into his hair. He didn’t even look at Krave’s face, his eyes lingering disdainfully on my simple coat.

Krave didn’t speak. She reached into her coat and casually tossed one of the massive, glowing pearl-tokens she had acquired from dismantling the Bourse onto the diamond table.

It hit the crystal surface with a heavy, deafening thud.

The token was coded with the central bank’s highest-tier verification runes. It represented roughly half % of the GoldenTurtle’s physical gold reserves.

The pale Mermaid lord stared at the token. The boredom instantly vanished from his eyes, replaced by a sudden, sharp jolt of primitive greed. His two companions sat up perfectly straight, their gills flaring in the chilled water.

“I am playing the board, and I have entirely too much money. Do try to keep up.”

Krave smiled, pulling out a plush velvet chair and sitting down directly across from the pale lord.

The silver-masked dealer paused, looking down at the impossible wealth sitting on his table. He gave a slow, measured nod, his six arms moving in perfect, fluid synchronisation.

“Bets are open.”

The dealer rasped. The game was fast, elegant, and brutally expensive.

The centre of the diamond table contained a hollow, glowing funnel of swirling water. The pale lord pushed a stack of platinum markers toward the dealer, confidently calling out three specific spatial coordinates. His companions followed suit, betting massive sums on the randomised outcome.

Krave didn’t even look at the funnel. She pointed her pale finger at three completely random, statistically impossible coordinates on the far edge of the board.

“Ten million platinum.”

Krave chirped.

The pale lord sneered.

“You are throwing your wealth into the abyss, human. The current trajectory makes those coordinates a physical impossibility.”

“We shall see.”

She beamed.

The dealer raised his hands. Three flawless, glowing golden pearls dropped from his upper palms into the swirling funnel. The water violently grabbed them, whipping the pearls in a chaotic, blurring circle of light.

I kept my hands resting in my pockets, my expression entirely neutral.

As the funnel began to slow, I felt the microscopic spike in mana. The dealer’s lower right hand twitched, activating the hidden blood-pact rune. He was attempting to shift the density of the water, forcing the pearls away from Krave’s chosen coordinates and toward the house’s blank zones.

It was a beautiful, subtle piece of magic.

I didn’t break it. Breaking it would trigger the casino’s anti-cheat alarms. Instead, I simply reached out with my intent and rewrote the mathematical laws of fluid dynamics within the two-foot radius of the funnel. I changed the fundamental definition of ‘density’.

The dealer’s magic activated perfectly, but because the underlying laws of reality had been quietly edited, the density shift had the exact opposite effect.

The three golden pearls violently corrected their trajectory. They defied gravity, momentum, and the physical shape of the funnel, suddenly snapping into place. They landed perfectly, completely still, on Krave’s three chosen coordinates.

The silence on the dais was absolute.

The dealer froze, his six arms suspended in mid-air. The pale Mermaid lord stared at the table, his mouth slightly open.

“Beginner’s luck.”

Krave laughed, sweeping a massive pile of the house’s platinum markers across the diamond surface toward her side of the table.

“Again.”

Over the next twenty minutes, the House of Odds experienced a localised, catastrophic mathematical breakdown.

Krave played with a reckless, borderline insane aggression. She placed wagers that defied all logical strategy, picking coordinates entirely at random. The Mermaid nobles, their pride violently wounded by the smiling human, doubled their bets. They leveraged their liquid assets. They called in couriers to bring deeds and bonds from the central bank.

And every single time the pearls dropped, I quietly folded the laws of probability.

I shifted the friction coefficient of the diamond. I delayed the kinetic transfer of momentum by zero-point-two seconds. I completely inverted the gravitational pull within the funnel.

Krave won every single impossible bet.

“His reactions are fascinating.”

Luna projected directly into my mind.

Luna was perched comfortably on my shoulders, her silver eyes locked onto the pale Mermaid lord. The lord was currently sweating profusely, a physical impossibility for a deep-sea aquatic being that indicated severe, systemic organ stress. His hands were trembling as he stared at his empty side of the table.

“His heart is going to blast open soon.”

Luna reported, her voice carrying the clinical, deadpan tone of a scholar observing a dying insect.

“Luna, do not cheer for his impending stroke.”

I murmured.

“I am merely observing the hunt.”

Luna countered smoothly.

“I am out of platinum; you are cheating. No one has this kind of luck.”

The pale lord hissed, his voice cracking as he slammed his fist onto the diamond table. He glared at Krave with pure, unadulterated hatred.

“If I am cheating, call the templars.”

Krave offered pleasantly, gesturing to the heavily armed guards standing at the edge of the dais.

“But the dealer’s runes show no signs of tampering. The magic is perfectly intact. You are simply losing, my lord.”

The dealer remained entirely silent, though I could sense the sheer, mind-numbing terror radiating from beneath his silver mask. He knew his probability magic was failing, but his arrays couldn’t detect my intent.

“One final wager: the deed to the Sunless Vents. A deep-tide thermal mining operation. It produces twenty thousand tons of raw elemental heat a year.”

The pale lord snarled, his pride entirely overriding his survival instincts. He reached into his kelp-silk robes and pulled out a heavy, glowing obsidian cylinder.

The other two nobles at the table gasped, entirely horrified by the stake.

“My lord, the house cannot match that liquidity.”

The dealer rasped, his voice trembling.

“She can match the deed, human. I want everything you have on the table. All the gold. All the platinum.”

The lord pointed a shaking finger at Krave.

Krave looked at the glowing obsidian cylinder. Then, she looked up at me, her dark eyes entirely wild with joy.

I gave her a single, microscopic nod.

“Done.”

Krave whispered. She pushed her entire mountain of wealth—enough money to purchase a small kingdom on the surface—into the centre of the table.

She picked a single, highly irregular coordinate. The pale lord picked the safest, statistically most probable outcome on the board.

The dealer’s hands were physically shaking as he dropped the three pearls into the funnel.

The pale lord didn’t even watch the water. He was staring directly at Krave, his gills flaring violently, his jaw locked in a desperate, silent prayer to whatever ancient gods of the deep he worshipped.

I didn’t just alter the density this time. I looked at the concept of chance itself, grasped the mathematical absolute of the Mermaid lord’s victory, and simply erased it from the timeline.

The water in the funnel roared. The dealer desperately pushed every ounce of his blood-pact magic into the arrays, trying to force the pearls away from Krave’s mark.

The pearls hit the bottom of the funnel. They bounced once, completely ignoring the dealer’s frantic magical interference, rolled in a perfect, synchronised triangle, and settled precisely on Krave’s exact coordinate.

The pale lord let out a sound that resembled a dying trench-wyrm.

All the blood instantly drained from his face. His eyes rolled back into his skull.

“Yup. he is gonna lose his heart soon.”

Luna announced with profound satisfaction. The Mermaid lord slumped forward, his face hitting the diamond table with a dull thud. His two companions immediately scrambled backwards in their chairs, screaming for the house clerics.

Krave didn’t blink. She calmly reached across the table, picked up the glowing obsidian deed to the Sunless Vents, and slipped it into her coat. She then swept the colossal mountain of platinum and gold back into her spatial storage.

“The house is officially empty, thank you for the hospitality.”

Krave smiled, looking at the terrified, silver-masked dealer.

I expanded the perceptual filter, ensuring the chaotic, screaming panic of the nobles and the approaching casino security simply washed over us without registering our physical presence.

“The alarms are triggering.”

I noted calmly, listening to the heavy, violent hum of the Golden Turtle’s lockdown wards beginning to activate in the distance. The central bank had finally realised their Bourse was entirely broken, and the casino managers were simultaneously discovering that their impenetrable vault of probability had just been cleaned out.

“Let them ring, I am officially a deep-sea mining baroness. We need to celebrate.”

Krave laughed, stepping off the dais and linking her arm through mine.

“I require meat; take me to the Gilded Feast, or I will begin eating the patrons.”

Luna growled, her patience entirely exhausted.

“The Gilded Feast it is.”

I agreed smoothly, adjusting the lapels of my coat as we strolled out of the highest-stakes casino in the ocean, leaving absolute, unregulated financial devastation in our wake.
