The Conquerors Path

Chapter 1072: Chapter 1070 — The Crystalline Flame-Spices

The lower market terraces of Trench-Spire were not designed for casual browsing. They were designed for survival.

As we descended from the relative quiet of the upper caldera rim and stepped onto the primary mercantile promenade, the sheer, unfiltered hostility of the deep-sea culinary world crashed over us. The avenue was paved in jagged, cooling basalt. Heavy iron grates lined the centre of the street, venting localised plumes of raw, crimson magma that served as both illumination and open-air roasting pits for the hundreds of vendors hawking their wares.

The noise was a physical weight. The deafening roar of highly pressurised water flash-boiling against the thermal vents mingled with the aggressive, overlapping shouts of merchants screaming prices in a dozen different abyssal dialects.

“That’s a lot of people.”

Luna projected directly into my mind.

The crowds subconsciously parted around us, their minds forcing their bodies to step aside without ever fully registering our faces.

“This is spectacular as always.”

Krave breathed, practically skipping beside me.

She was in her element, thriving on the chaotic, hyper-competitive energy of the market. Her dark eyes darted from stall to stall, taking in the bizarre, highly lethal ingredients on display.

“Look at this place, Austin; they don’t just cook here. They wage war against their food. I have a fortune in stolen casino platinum burning a hole in my pocket, and I want to buy something that actively attempts to murder you when you slice it.”

Krave beamed, gesturing toward a massive stall where an electric eel butcher was using a heavily enchanted bone-saw to carve the venom-sacs out of a still-twitching trench-drake.

“A reasonable request; let us find an ingredient worthy of the hostility.”

I said, scanning the glowing, violently bubbling displays.

We drifted deeper into the market. The ingredients being sold here were not meant for standard consumption. They were highly volatile, heavily pressurised deep-sea anomalies that required days—sometimes weeks—of methodical neutralisation before they were safe to eat.

I saw vendors selling Abyssal Spine-Urchins that could paralyse a leviathan. I saw stalls offering chunks of fermented deep-tide coral that radiated enough localised acidity to melt solid iron.

But none of it was quite aggressive enough.

Then, near the absolute centre of the promenade, the ambient temperature of the water spiked dramatically.

I turned my head. At the end of a narrow, heavily warded alleyway stood a single, heavily reinforced stall forged entirely from deep-sea diamond and abyssal iron. The merchant operating it was an ancient, heavily scarred deep-dwarf wearing a bulky, liquid-metal thermal suit.

He was not shouting. He didn’t need to. The ingredient he was selling commanded absolute, terrified respect from the surrounding crowd.

Resting on a pedestal in the centre of his stall was a vacuum-sealed stasis tank. Inside the tank was a single, twisting bundle of kelp.

It did not look like vegetation. It looked like a contained solar flare.

The kelp was violently, aggressively orange. It crackled with thick arcs of raw kinetic energy, the fronds constantly thrashing and whipping against the inside of the stasis tank as if attempting to break free. The ambient water surrounding the tank was boiling in a continuous, frantic vortex simply from the localised radiation.

“Abyssal Flame-Kelp.”

I murmured, my culinary instincts locking onto the tank.

“Oh, that is beautiful. I haven’t seen a living cluster of that in some time. It grows exclusively on the absolute lip of active super-volcanoes.”

“If you put that in your mouth, it will detonate.”

Luna said, her nose twitching violently as she analysed the thermal bleed coming off the tank.

“That is exactly what makes it interesting, Luna.”

I said, stepping out of the main thoroughfare and approaching the dwarven merchant’s stall.

As we closed the distance, the dwarf narrowed his heavily scarred eyes, his gaze sweeping over my understated coat and Krave’s striking human disguise.

“Back away from the perimeter; this isn’t a museum. That is raw thermal-bloom kelp. If the stasis field flickers for a fraction of a second, the localised kinetic expansion will blow a hole straight through your chests.”

The dwarf looking sea folk rumbled, his voice thick with gravel and exhaustion. He tapped a heavy, iron-gloved finger against the deep-sea diamond tank.

Krave didn’t back away. She leaned her elbows on the abyssal-iron counter, resting her chin in her hands, and offered the dwarf a bright, terrifyingly polite smile.

“How much for the entire cluster?”

Krave asked.

The dwarf scoffed, crossing his thick arms.

“You don’t have the liquidity, lady. And even if you did, I wouldn’t sell it to you. That kelp requires a minimum of three weeks in a high-pressure, sub-zero bleed chamber just to neutralise the explosive yield. You don’t possess the magical infrastructure to prep it. I sell to the master chefs of the Grand Prix, not tourists.”

Krave didn’t argue. She simply reached into her coat, retrieved one of the massive, glowing pearl-tokens from the Golden Turtle, and slapped it onto the counter.

The heavy, resonant thud of the token hitting the iron completely silenced the dwarf.

His eyes went wide as the automated runic scanners built into his counter desperately tried to calculate the sheer, unfathomable mass of physical gold backing the token. The display runes flashed a violent, blinding green.

“I believe that covers the cost of the vegetation, and the tank.”

I said smoothly, stepping up beside Krave.

The seamen swallowed hard. The absolute, undeniable weight of the platinum instantly overrode his professional morals. He reached out with a trembling, armoured hand and swept the token into his lockbox.

“It’s your funeral; the stasis lock is tied to the physical clasp on the lid. Don’t open it until you are inside a reinforced bunker.”

He muttered, stepping back from the pedestal.

“I prefer to work in the open air.”

I replied mildly.

I didn’t pick up the tank. I extended my intent, lifting the massive, heavily warded diamond container into the air using a localised telekinetic grip.

A crowd was already beginning to form. The sheer audacity of a group purchasing a lethal, un-neutralised bundle of Flame-Kelp had drawn the attention of the surrounding master chefs and culinary elites. Dozens of heavily muscled tritons and sea-elves paused their shopping, gathering at the edge of the alleyway to watch what they assumed would be our immediate, explosive demise.

“They think you are going to accidentally vaporise yourself, Austin, please don’t disappoint them.”

Krave whispered, looking back at the gathering crowd with a look of pure, malicious glee.

“I never do.”

I murmured.

I did not retreat to a kitchen. The market promenade provided ample space.

I raised my right hand, grasping the physical laws governing the space directly in front of the stall. I wove a flawless, microscopic containment field—a localised pocket of absolute reality where I dictated the rules of physics. I suspended the diamond tank within the centre of this invisible sphere.

“Luna, pay attention to the thermal transfer.”

I requested quietly.

“I am watching.”

She replied, her silver eyes entirely locked onto the violently thrashing kelp.

I didn’t touch the physical clasp on the tank. I simply looked at the spatial coordinates of the deep-sea diamond lid and folded them out of existence.

The tank opened.

The reaction was instantaneous. Deprived of the suppressing pressure of the stasis field, the Abyssal Flame-Kelp did exactly what its evolutionary biology demanded. It attempted to detonate.

A blinding, localised shockwave of pure, crimson kinetic energy exploded outward from the kelp. The thermal expansion was so violent it instantly vaporised the ambient water inside the tank, generating a concussive blast meant to level the surrounding alleyway.

The crowd of watching chefs gasped, several of them diving to the basalt floor, throwing up desperate, panicked bio-magical shields to protect themselves from the shrapnel.

The explosion never reached them.

The kinetic shockwave hit the invisible boundary of my spatial fold and simply stopped. It didn’t bounce off; it was caught. I held the explosive force of the kelp perfectly suspended in mid-air, locking the violently expanding energy into a state of absolute, frozen tension.

Inside my barrier, the Flame-Kelp was a suspended, blinding star of kinetic fury. Outside the barrier, not a single ripple disturbed the water.

The dwarven merchant, who had thrown himself behind his heavy iron counter, slowly peeked his head over the edge. His jaw dropped.

“He… he caught the bloom.”

A triton master chef whispered from the crowd, his voice trembling with sheer, unadulterated awe.

I ignored them. I manifested a sleek, condensed blade of spatial energy in my right hand.

I reached directly into the suspended explosion.

The heat inside the fold was conceptually staggering, but my personal barrier nullified it completely. I didn’t try to extinguish the kelp’s kinetic energy; that was the source of its flavour. I simply needed to redefine how that energy was applied.

With a series of rapid, surgically flawless strikes, I julienned the writhing, glowing bundle of kelp.

My spatial blade didn’t just slice the physical plant matter. With every cut, I deliberately severed the kinetic loops within the kelp’s cellular matrix, forcing the trapped explosive force to fold back in on itself. I bound the raw thermal violence directly into the microscopic structure of the slices.

The blinding crimson light slowly faded, replaced by a deep, pulsing, stable orange glow.

The kelp was no longer a bomb. It was a hyper-condensed, mathematically perfected thermal spice.

I lowered my hand, allowing the spatial blade to dissipate. The perfectly julienned ribbons of Flame-Kelp hovered gently within my containment field, radiating a steady, intense, flawless heat.

“Beautiful, but you can’t just eat the spice alone, Austin.”

Krave breathed, clapping her hands together.

“I am aware.”

I replied smoothly.

I turned my attention to the adjacent stall. The vendor, a terrified sea-elf, was selling massive, thick slabs of raw Trench-Serpent belly. The meat was notoriously dense, practically rubbery, and highly toxic if not seared at temperatures exceeding the melting point of steel.

I extended a thread of intent, casually retrieving a ten-pound slab of the serpent belly and depositing a gold coin on the elf’s counter in exchange.

I levitated the raw, pale meat directly into my containment field, suspending it in the centre of the hovering ribbons of Flame-Kelp.

I didn’t use a grill. I used the ingredient’s own aggression.

With a subtle clench of my hand, I collapsed the spatial fold. I forced the julienned ribbons of Flame-Kelp to violently compress directly against the surface of the Trench-Serpent’s belly.

The trapped kinetic energy inside the kelp instantly transferred to the meat.

A deafening, localised hiss echoed across the silent alleyway. The sheer, concentrated thermal force of the kelp flash-fried the incredibly dense serpent meat in a fraction of a second. The violent heat broke down the complex toxins, instantly rendering the heavy abyssal fat.

A thick, jagged, mahogany crust formed flawlessly across the exterior of the slab, while the interior remained perfectly tender, infused with the aggressive, earthy heat of the kelp.

I dropped the containment field.

The aroma hit the market.

It was a physical impact. The scent of caramelised abyssal fat, deep-earth spice, and raw, purified thermal energy washed over the crowd. It was so intense, so fundamentally perfect, that several of the master chefs actually fell to their knees, weeping openly at the sheer culinary impossibility they were smelling.

They had spent their entire lives wrestling with magma vents, believing that true mastery was the ability to survive the heat. I had just demonstrated that true mastery was the ability to dictate reality to the heat.

I levitated the massive, steaming slab of kelp-seared meat out of the air and onto a conjured plate of dark slate.

I held the plate up to my shoulder.

Luna did not wait for an invitation. The silver wolf leaned forward, her jaws opening wide. She didn’t nibble. She sank her fangs directly into the centre of the searing, ten-pound cut of meat, tearing a massive chunk free in a single, brutal motion.

The crunch of the flash-fried kelp crust shattering against her teeth was immaculate.

Luna closed her eyes, chewing slowly. The entire crowd held their breath, completely paralysed, watching a silver wolf judge a dish that defied the laws of physics.

Luna swallowed. She opened her silver eyes, looked directly at the weeping triton master chefs in the crowd, and let out a soft, highly dismissive snort.

“Looking good.”

Luna added. She looked down at me.

“You may prepare this for me again tomorrow.”

“I will add it to the rotation, Luna.”

I replied mildly.

I handed the slate plate, holding the remainder of the flawless serpent belly, to Krave. The ancient kraken giggled, completely ignoring the awestruck, paralysed crowd of culinary elites, and took a massive bite of the meat.

“Oh, that is spectacular. It actually bites back.”

Krave moaned, her eyes fluttering shut. I slipped my hands back into my coat pockets, adjusting the lapels of my coat.

“Keep the tank.”

I said smoothly to the dwarven merchant, who was still staring at the empty air where the explosion had vanished, his mind completely broken by the casual violation of reality.

I turned on my heel and strolled casually out of the alleyway.

Krave followed, happily eating the heavily spiced, impossible meat with her bare hands, while Luna curled back around my neck, vibrating with a deep, rumbling purr of absolute caloric contentment.

We left the crowd of master chefs kneeling in the basalt promenade, completely utterly demoralised, as we drifted effortlessly toward the next terrace, searching for dessert.
