The Conquerors Path

Chapter 1064: Chapter 1062 — The Ghost-Current Promenade

By the time we stepped back onto the wide, sweeping avenues of the aristocratic promenade, the Aethelgard Dukedom’s simulated night cycle had completely taken over.

The Aethelgard architects, for all their insufferable arrogance and heavy-handed taxation, occasionally stumbled into genuine, breathtaking poetry. During the day cycle, the massive obsidian cobblestones paving the upper districts absorbed the intense, magical heat radiating from the golden dome. Now, with the dome’s thermal arrays powered down to mimic the freezing ambient temperature of the deep ocean, the stones were actively bleeding that trapped heat back into the freezing air.

The result was a sprawling, city-wide phenomenon of localised condensation.

Thick, swirling currents of warm mist rose from the black pavement, clinging to the ground like a heavy, living blanket. The fog didn’t just sit stagnant; it drifted and coiled through the twisting streets, catching the muted, ambient light of the scattered bioluminescent streetlamps. It looked exactly like the ghostly, underwater thermal currents of the true abyss, perfectly recreated in an environment of dry air.

I adjusted my perceptual filter, tightening the weave of my intent. The promenade was mostly empty. The wealthy human nobles and elven aristocrats had long since retreated to their heavily heated, fortified estates, terrified of the biting chill that had settled over the district. The only people left on the streets were the occasional squads of elite triton guards, conducting their silent, late-night patrols.

I didn’t erase us completely, but I pushed our presence deep into the background radiation of reality. To anyone passing by, we were nothing more than three indistinct shadows drifting through the fog. We were phantoms walking through a ghost-current.

Krave was walking a few paces ahead of me. She hadn’t spoken since we left the observation deck.

The hyperactive, aggressively manic tourist who had spent the afternoon hurling insults at local chefs and terrorizing high-society botanists was entirely gone. In her place was the ancient, undisputed queen of the lightless depths. She moved with a slow, liquid grace, her hands resting casually at her sides, her pale fingers occasionally trailing through the swirling banks of warm mist as if she were testing the water pressure.

She wasn’t looking at the extravagant, towering mansions or the manicured, glowing crystal gardens lining the promenade. Her head was tilted back, her dark eyes tracking the absolute apex of the dimmed golden dome above us.

The Starfall plankton had largely dispersed, swept away by the shifting thermal currents, leaving the ocean above in a state of pure, heavy blackness. But the darkness was not empty.

Without the blinding, artificial sunlight of the dome obscuring the view, the true scale of the local abyssal wildlife was on full display. Massive, ancient shadows were gliding peacefully over the magical barrier. They were so large they blotted out the scattered bioluminescence of the distant trenches, casting deep, slow-moving eclipses over the city below.

“That one, that is a Ridge-Backed Scythe-Tail. A young male, I think. Only a few centuries old.”

Krave murmured softly, her voice carrying a rich, profoundly content nostalgia. She pointed a delicate finger toward a colossal, jagged silhouette drifting lazily across the northern quadrant of the dome.

I followed her finger, analyzing the shadow. The beast was easily the size of a surface galleon, heavily armored with thick, overlapping plates of bone. Its tail was a massive, sweeping crescent of hardened cartilage that looked capable of snapping a submarine in half with a casual twitch.

“He is moving too slowly to generate sufficient force.”

Luna observed.

The silver wolf was currently draped across my shoulders, her thick fur providing a perfect, localized thermal barrier against the biting chill of the simulated night. She hadn’t gone back to sleep. Her silver eyes were wide open, locked onto the massive predators circling the city.

“The morphology is inefficient he possesses heavy armor, but his propulsion structure is sluggish. How does he secure meat? Without light to track prey, and without the speed to run it down, starvation seems inevitable.”

Luna continued, her voice projecting directly into my mind and Krave’s. There was no sarcasm in her tone, no aristocratic disdain for the damp environment. It was a purely clinical, analytical assessment from one apex predator observing another.

Krave let out a soft, echoing laugh that rolled through the mist. She slowed her pace, allowing me to draw level with her so she could address the wolf directly.

“You are thinking like a creature of the forests, Luna, on the surface, hunting is a matter of chasing. It is about outrunning the prey, overpowering it, and snapping its neck. The deep ocean does not work that way. Down here, running burns too much energy. Down here, hunting is a matter of absolute patience.”

Krave replied warmly, her eyes still tracking the massive shadow above.

“Explain.”

Luna demanded, her ears pitching forward in genuine curiosity.

“The Scythe-Tail does not chase anything, he possesses a network of microscopic sensory pits along his lower jaw. They do not detect scent or light. They detect minute shifts in the localized water pressure. He can feel the heartbeat of a terrified squid from two miles away.”

Krave explained, gesturing toward the dome as the massive beast slowly banked to the left, disappearing into the absolute black.

“Tracking by kinetic displacement.”

I murmured, genuinely impressed by the biological mechanics.

“Exactly, when he finds a migration lane, he simply stops swimming. He hovers in the absolute dark, perfectly still. His armor is covered in a specialized, parasitic algae that entirely absorbs the ambient sonar clicks of other predators. He becomes a hole in the water. He waits for hours. Sometimes days.”

Krave smiled.

Luna shifted her weight on my shoulders, her claws digging slightly into my heavy coat.

“And when the prey approaches?”

“He opens his mouth, his jaw structure is unhinged. When he snaps it open, the sudden, massive expansion of his oral cavity creates a localized, violent vacuum in the water. The prey isn’t bitten. It is instantly sucked backward into his throat, crushed by the sudden pressure differential, and swallowed before it even realizes it was being hunted.”

Krave said simply. Luna sat perfectly still for a long moment, processing the sheer, effortless violence of the method.

“No chase, no wasted calories. Simply wait until the prey is in range, and remove the space they occupy.”

Luna stated softly.

“Brutal. Efficient. Inevitable, the deep sea does not reward the fast, Luna. It rewards the patient.”

Krave agreed, her dark eyes flashing with a profound respect for the uncompromising laws of her home.

“I still prefer hunting and killing things by my own mouth, its more thrilling.”

Luna declared.

We continued our slow, drifting walk down the center of the promenade. The conversation flowed naturally between the ancient kraken and the silver wolf, devoid of their usual bickering.

Luna asked sharp, highly targeted questions about the hunting patterns, territorial disputes, and venom potency of the various leviathans casting shadows over the city. Krave answered every inquiry with detailed, enthusiastic precision. She spoke of trench-wyrms that hunted by super-heating localized pockets of water to boil their prey alive, and abyssal stalkers that used bioluminescent lures to mimic the mating signals of lesser species.

It was a fascinating, surreal dynamic to observe. They were bonding over the theoretical applications of extreme biological violence.

I simply listened, maintaining the perfect integrity of our stealth.

Ahead of us, the swirling fog parted slightly, revealing a squad of six elite triton guards marching directly toward us. They were clad in heavy, shifting liquid-metal armor, their visors pulled down against the chill, holding long, enchanted halberds that pulsed with a dull, menacing red light. They were walking in a tight, disciplined formation, taking up the majority of the pathway.

The entire squad flowed smoothly around us like water parting around a smooth stone in a river.

One of the guards walked so close to Krave that the blade of his halberd clipped cleanly through the billowing, phantom mist trailing off her shoulder. The guard shivered, pulling his heavy cloak tighter around his neck, entirely unaware that he had just bypassed a deity.

Krave didn’t even pause her explanation of how a ghost-eel paralyzes a target. She casually stepped through the gap in their formation, completely unbothered by the heavy weaponry swinging inches from her face.

Once the guards had vanished back into the fog behind us, the silence of the promenade returned, heavier and more peaceful than before.

“The surface mortals believe the ocean is chaotic, they look at the storms and the crashing waves, and they think the water is angry. But that is only the skin of the world. Down here, in the true deep, there is order. There is a rhythm to the darkness. Everything has its place.”

Krave murmured, her voice dropping into a softer, more reflective register as we approached the center of the noble district.

She stopped walking, turning to look at a massive, ancient statue of a deep-sea serpent carved from a single piece of black pearl. The mist curled around the base of the statue, making it look as though the serpent were rising from a boiling sea.

“I have enjoyed today, Austin, it is strange… walking through these streets. Seeing how desperately these mortals try to emulate a world they don’t understand, while simultaneously locking out the terrifying beauty of the world they actually inhabit.”

Krave said, looking over her shoulder at me. The warm, genuine smile that touched her lips was free of any manic performance.

“It is the nature of civilisation, they build walls to keep the unknown at bay, and then they spend their entire lives decorating the inside of the cage.”

I replied mildly, coming to a halt beside her.

“A very poetic way of calling them cowards.”

Luna snorted from my neck.

Krave laughed, the sound bright and clear in the deadened air.

“They are cowards. But they are highly entertaining cowards. And, more importantly, they are cowards who know how to cook.”

The profound, melancholic nostalgia that had settled over her during the walk instantly vanished, replaced once again by the hyper-energetic, predatory gleam of the divine kraken who had spent the entire afternoon terrorising the local economy.

Krave spun on her heel, pointing a dramatic finger toward the absolute center of the city.

Through the swirling ghost-currents of mist, a massive, impossible structure loomed in the distance. It wasn’t built on the ground. It was a sprawling, glittering architectural masterpiece suspended completely in mid-air, floating in a localized anti-gravity bubble hundreds of feet above the highest estates.

“The Sovereign’s Palate, it has a five-year waiting list. The Duke himself dines there on special occasions. The chefs use temporal stasis arrays to age their meats, and the sommelier is a reformed blood-mage.”

Krave announced, her voice ringing with sheer, unadulterated anticipation.

“We are going to eat a heavily armored trench-drake, Austin. And we are going to make the Duke’s personal chefs cook it for us. Come on!”

I let out a soft breath of amusement, the warm fog curling around the heavy fabric of my coat. I didn’t argue.

“Trench-drake is an acceptable compromise.”

Luna noted, her tail giving a single, slow swish against my back.
