The Conquerors Path

Chapter 1063: Chapter 1061 — The Colourful Descent

As we stepped out from the hushed, crystalline tranquillity of the Glass-Tide Conservatory, the ambient environment of the city underwent a massive, city-wide systemic shift. The colossal golden dome acting as our sky—the singular, violent ward holding back billions of gallons of crushing ocean water—began to slowly power down its thermal and light-emitting arrays.

The brilliant, artificial sunset glow that had bathed the stone architecture in constant warmth bled away. It was replaced by a deep, heavy, oppressive twilight blue. The localised heating vents carved into the streets sealed themselves with heavy metallic clanks, allowing the freezing, natural temperature of the deep ocean to seep through the magical membrane.

Down in the lower terraces, thousands of colourful lanterns and redirected magma-torches flared to life in response, painting the twisting streets below us in chaotic splashes of neon green and violent crimson.

“They even regulate the temperature gradients to force the merchants to buy enchanted heating cloaks; their economic exploitation of basic atmospheric needs is genuinely impressive.”

I observed, watching the ambient mana drop by several degrees.

The moment we had crossed the boundary out of the Conservatory’s anti-gravity field, the heavy, undeniable pull of the earth had slammed back into our bones.

“I despise this place, the ground is too hard, the gravity is inconsistent, and I am no longer floating. Austin, demand they turn the floating magic back on.”

Luna muttered, her claws finding their absolute favourite anchor points on my collarbone.

“I am not initiating a hostile takeover of the city’s magical infrastructure just so you can take a nap without using your own muscles.”

I replied mildly, adjusting the lapels of my coat to better accommodate her weight.

“You lack vision; we should just rule it all.”

Luna grumbled, burying her snout beneath her paws to shield her nose from the sudden, biting chill in the air.

“We are not going down.”

Krave announced suddenly.

The divine kraken was standing at the edge of the crushed-pearl promenade, completely ignoring the shivering aristocrats hurrying past us toward the heavily heated taverns. She was staring straight up. Her dark eyes were locked onto the absolute highest point of the Aethelgard capital.

I followed her gaze. Rising from the very centre of the noble district was a single, impossibly narrow spire of polished black obsidian. It pierced upward through the twisting layers of the city, ascending so high that its peak actually brushed against the inside of the golden dome. It looked less like a building and more like a needle desperately trying to puncture the magical bubble containing us.

“The Sovereign’s Needle, it is the primary anchor point for the city’s atmospheric wards. And it is the only place in this miserable, dry fishbowl where you can get a proper view.”

Krave murmured, a rare, soft anticipation bleeding into her voice.

“A view of what?”

I asked.

“The Abyssal Starfall, it only happens once every few decades. The timing relies on the southern thermal currents shifting perfectly with the deep-tide pressure drops. I haven’t seen one since before I went to sleep.”

Krave smiled, turning to look at me. The manic, hyperactive energy of the tourist had faded, replaced by that ancient, profound stillness that occasionally surfaced when she remembered who she truly was.

“It involves climbing, I vote we return to the tavern. The one with the highly volatile rum and the chef who threw boiling grease. That was entertaining. Climbing is not entertaining.”

Krave smiled, turning to look at me. The manic, hyperactive energy of the tourist had faded, replaced by that ancient, profound stillness that occasionally surfaced when she remembered who she truly was.

“You are being carried, Luna, you are not climbing anything.”

I reminded her.

“My sheer presence is an exertion,”

She countered smoothly.

I ignored the wolf, returning my attention to Krave. I didn’t need to read her aura to see how much this meant to her. I gave her a single, affirmative nod.

“Lead the way.”

The journey to the base of the Sovereign’s Needle was an exercise in bypassing extreme, deeply paranoid aristocratic security. The Aethelgard Dukedom did not allow tourists, no matter how wealthy, to approach the primary anchor point of their entire civilisation.

As we ascended the spiralling ramps leading toward the spire, the crowds vanished entirely. The architecture shifted from decorative manors to heavily fortified military installations. We encountered three separate, overlapping perimeters of spatial lockdown arrays, each designed to instantly and violently separate the molecules of anyone lacking a royal signet ring.

I didn’t break a single one. Breaking them would send an arcane shockwave down to the city mages. Instead, I expanded my perceptual filter and engaged in a series of micro-edits to reality. I matched the exact frequency of the royal signet rings, weaving the mathematical concept of our authorisation directly into the wards’ core logic. The magical barriers washed over us like a warm breeze, eagerly parting to allow us passage.

We walked past entire squads of elite, halberd-wielding Triton knights riding heavily armoured manta-rays. My aura suppressed the visual and auditory data their brains received. To the guards, the polished obsidian staircase remained empty. I even erased the thermal footprint of our bodies, ensuring the heavily enchanted heat-seeking runes carved into the walls remained dormant.

We were phantoms ascending a forbidden mountain.

The climb was immense. The air grew noticeably thinner and substantially colder the higher we went. The ambient pressure of the city’s internal atmosphere struggled to reach this altitude. The chaotic, roaring noise of the lower markets faded into a distant, muffled hum, swallowed by the sheer vastness of the space between the spire and the ground below.

Finally, we reached the apex.

The observation deck was a perfectly circular platform of sheer, reinforced glass, suspended mere inches beneath the violent, thrumming membrane of the golden dome. There were no railings. There were no safety wards. The platform was designed solely for the Duke’s supreme mages to conduct localised repairs on the barrier.

Stepping onto the glass felt like stepping out into the absolute void.

Below us, the entire capital of the Aethelgard Dukedom sprawled out like a glittering, chaotic jewel trapped in a jar. The colourful coral pathways, the glowing thermal vents, and the shifting, artificial lights of the noble estates created a breathtaking tapestry of civilisation desperately clinging to the bottom of the world.

But looking up was entirely different.

Directly above us, pressing heavily against the thin golden ward, was the true deep ocean. It was an expanse of pure, unadulterated blackness. The crushing weight of it was so psychologically oppressive that even looking at it sent a primal, deeply ingrained warning shivering down the spine. It was a darkness so absolute it felt solid.

The air on the platform was brutally cold. The thermal arrays of the dome didn’t reach this high, leaving the glass deck exposed to the ambient, freezing temperature of the abyssal water just inches away. A sharp, artificial wind whipped across the platform, generated by the heavy atmospheric funnels attempting to circulate the thin oxygen.

Luna shivered against my neck, her fur puffing up immediately to retain heat.

“There is nothing up here. We walked past three perfectly good meat vendors for a glass floor and absolute darkness.”

She complained softly, burying her face against my collar.

“Patience.”

Krave whispered. She walked to the very edge of the platform. She didn’t look down at the city. She pressed her pale hands flat against the golden ward, her dark eyes entirely focused on the impenetrable blackness of the ocean above.

“They are coming, the currents just shifted.”

Krave breathed, a profound, aching reverence in her voice.

I shifted my vision, peering past the physical realm to observe the flow of mana in the water outside the dome. Krave was right. A massive, continent-spanning thermal current was currently crashing into the natural pressure gradient of the trench, creating a violent, localised upwelling of deep-sea energy.

Then, the darkness broke.

It started as a single, microscopic pinprick of piercing, neon-blue light far out in the black water. Then another. Then ten. Then ten thousand.

Within seconds, the entire ocean above and around the golden dome ignited.

It was a migration of colossal, unfathomable scale. Billions upon billions of deep-sea plankton, highly charged with latent mana, were being swept through the trench by the thermal current. As they reacted to the friction of the moving water and the dense magical barrier of the city, their bioluminescence triggered simultaneously.

It looked exactly like a blizzard in the void. A heavy, violently glowing snowstorm of pure neon light drifting through the crushing depths. The colours were staggering—shifting waves of piercing cyan, deep violet, and vibrant, toxic green washed over the entire expanse of the ocean. The sheer density of the organisms illuminated the massive, terrifying silhouettes of the trench-beasts drifting lazily alongside them.

I saw the jagged, armoured underbelly of a leviathan the size of a mountain range glide silently past the dome, completely illuminated by the glowing snowstorm surrounding it.

“Beautiful.”

I murmured, genuinely moved by the sheer, unfiltered majesty of the world operating entirely independent of the arrogant mortals below. The sharp, howling wind of the observation deck tore at my coat, threatening to disrupt the absolute serenity of the moment. The distant, mechanical hum of the city’s runework vibrated through the glass beneath our boots.

It was an imperfect environment for a perfect sight.

I slipped my hands out of my pockets. I simply expanded my intent, reaching out to grasp the exact boundaries of the circular glass platform.

With a deliberate, microscopic shift in reality, I severed our connection to the city.

I wove a flawless, impenetrable sensory and thermal barrier around the three of us. It was a dome within a dome. The biting, freezing wind instantly vanished, replaced by a perfect, comfortable ambient warmth that radiated evenly from the air itself. The mechanical hum of the spatial arrays and the distant, muffled shouting of the metropolis were cleanly excised from existence.

Absolute, profound silence fell over the platform.

The sudden absence of sound was heavy, yet incredibly peaceful. We were entirely isolated at the absolute bottom of the world, suspended between the arrogant, glittering hubris of a trapped civilisation and the terrifying, ancient beauty of the glowing abyss.

Krave let out a long, slow breath. The tension that had been subtly coiling in her shoulders since we entered the capital simply melted away. She leaned her head against the golden ward, her dark eyes tracking the glowing blue snow as it drifted endlessly downward into the dark. She didn’t speak. She didn’t need to. The manic tourist was gone; the ancient queen of the deep had returned, quietly mourning and celebrating the home she had left behind.

I felt a sudden shift in weight on my shoulders.

Luna, who had spent the entire day complaining, demanding food, and harshly judging every aspect of mortal existence, stopped complaining.

The silver wolf slowly lifted her head from my collar. She stepped forward, carefully balancing her front paws on the absolute top of my head to get a better vantage point.

I didn’t stop her. I simply adjusted my stance, providing a completely stable foundation for her to stand on.

Luna stared out into the glowing, neon blizzard. She didn’t offer a sarcastic remark. She didn’t critique the nutritional value of the plankton or demand I break the glass so she could hunt the massive leviathans drifting through the light.

She sat perfectly, remarkably still.

The piercing, shifting lights of the Abyssal Starfall reflected beautifully in her silver eyes, creating tiny, dancing constellations across her irises. Her ears were pitched forward, utterly captivated by the silent, glowing majesty of a world that operated on a scale far beyond anything she had ever known in the surface forests.

For a creature entirely driven by logic, hunger, and an intense desire for comfort, the absolute wonder radiating from her small frame was profoundly telling.

I leaned back slightly, resting my hands in my pockets once more, entirely content to serve as a viewing platform for the wolf and a silent guardian for the kraken.

We stood there for hours. The city below us continued its chaotic, desperate existence, completely unaware of the three gods standing at the apex of their world. We didn’t exchange a single word.

In a journey defined by effortless power, cutthroat culinary disputes, and the casual dismantling of aristocratic society, the greatest luxury I could provide my companions was simply the absolute, undisturbed quiet required to watch the stars fall at the bottom of the sea.
