The Conquerors Path

Chapter 854: Chapter 852-Ways To Travel.

”This is crazy...,” Zora muttered, her wide eyes scanning the surreal surroundings.

Her voice cracked slightly, a reflection of the awe etched across her face. The city of Kharaldur sprawled endlessly, a labyrinthine marvel of towering machinery and intricate stonework, its sheer scale and complexity unlike anything sheʼd ever encountered. Life bustled seamlessly here, its rhythms merging with the clatter of gears and the hiss of steam.

”Itʼs as if the city is alive,” she whispered, her gaze flitting from one astonishing sight to another.

I couldnʼt argue. Everywhere I turned, Kharaldur defied logic and expectation-a true testament to dwarven ingenuity. The cityʼs sheer scope made my head spin, and I knew weʼd only begun to scratch the surface.

I didnʼt blame her for being overwhelmed. Even for someone like me, who had witnessed many wonders, Kharaldur was staggering. The city hummed with an energy all its own, the air dense with the scent of oil and coal. Overhead, gears the size of buildings rotated slowly, their grinding rhythm a mechanical symphony underscoring the metallic clink of horseshoes and the chatter of the bustling dwarven crowds.

”Itʼs not just crazy,” I said with a grin, nudging her forward. ”Itʼs a masterpiece.”

Zora hesitated but eventually fell into step beside me, her gaze darting from one marvel to the next.

”A masterpiece?” she echoed. ”Thatʼs one way to put it. But how do they live like this? Everything feels... so loud. So mechanical.”

I chuckled, gesturing toward a trio of dwarves striding ahead. Their tools clinked at their belts, and their stout frames radiated an air of authority.

”Welcome to Kharaldur,” I said. ”The Gilded Forge. The heart of dwarven ingenuity. Everything here is designed to function-as if the city itself were alive. This is a society that thrives on structure, order, and relentless progress.”

Zora glanced at me, her brow furrowed. ”Itʼs like nothing Iʼve ever seen. But how can they function with all this... noise?”

”They donʼt just function,” I said, motioning toward the towering spires ahead of us. ”They excel. Every cog, every gear, every hiss of steam-it all fits into a grander design. Come on, Iʼll show you.”

I led the way, Zora trailing close behind as we stepped onto the expansive roadway. The city seemed to breathe and pulse with life, a monumental machine that could spring into action as a single, cohesive force if ever threatened. It was a marvel of dwarven craftsmanship, a creation still regarded as one of the greatest in history.

”Letʼs head toward The Gearlock District,” I said with a smile.

Her brows knitted in confusion. ”How do we get there?”

I laughed, gesturing upward at the massive railways snaking through the city like gleaming veins. Steam-powered gondolas zipped along the tracks, their brass frames catching the light from glowing forges and street lanterns below.

”That,” I said, pointing to the elevated tracks, ”is the cityʼs lifeline-the Mechanized Transit Web. Itʼs how you get from one part of Kharaldur to another without losing yourself in the maze.”

Zora squinted at the gondolas zooming overhead. ”Those gondolas? Theyʼre moving so fast! And they donʼt even stop.”

”Not just gondolas,” I explained. ”Itʼs a whole system-a network of tracks, platforms, lifts, and moving walkways. Everythingʼs interconnected, powered by the same steam and gears that drive the rest of the city.”

I guided her to a towering structure at the edge of the street. Its sprawling circular base was a marvel of engineering, its gears in constant motion. Pipes hissed as steam escaped, and a faint hum echoed from deep within its mechanisms.

Two stern-looking dwarves stood guard near the entrance, their eyes narrowing as we approached, cutting through the line. Before they could say a word, I flashed a badge that granted me unlimited travel and special privileges the moment it was verified, their expressions shifted to a mix of respect and surprise as they stepped aside, allowing us to bypass the line.

”Welcome to a transit node,” I said, stepping onto the platform.

Zora hesitated, her gaze flitting nervously to the grinding gears below. ”Are you sure this is safe?”

I laughed. ”Safer than walking the streets. Trust me.”

Reluctantly, she followed me onto the platform. With a loud clank, the gears beneath us shifted, and the platform began to rise smoothly, carried upward by an intricate system of counterweights and pulleys.

”This is one of the vertical lifts,” I explained as the city unfolded below us. ”They connect the layers of the city-top to bottom. In Kharaldur, vertical movement is just as important as getting from one side to the other.”

Zora peered over the edge, her knuckles white as she gripped the railing. ”I can see that,” she murmured. ”Itʼs... incredible, though my belief that you can still keep surprising me is still there, what as that badge?.”

To her question, with a smile, I replied.

”Letʼs just say that it is a gift from the king, a small privilege”

The lift came to a smooth stop at the upper level, locking into place with a hiss of steam. Before us stretched an ornate station, its design blending functionality with grandeur. Clockwork displays ticked away, showing destinations in glowing runes.

”This,” I said, leading her toward the platformʼs edge, ”is where the real fun begins.”

A sleek, brass-lined gondola glided to a halt in front of us, its doors opening with a soft hiss. Inside, rows of plush seats awaited, each positioned beside a porthole-like window.

”This is how weʼre getting to The Gearlock District?” Zora asked, peering inside.

”Exactly,” I said. ”These gondolas run on steam and magnetic propulsion, powered by the same energy core that keeps the city alive. Theyʼre fast, efficient, and they connect all the major sectors.”

We stepped inside, and the doors slid shut behind us. The gondola jolted forward, quickly accelerating as gears outside engaged.

Zoraʼs eyes were glued to the window as the city blurred into a dazzling array of lights and motion. Tracks wove through massive gears and towering spires, sometimes looping in impossible spirals before straightening again.

”This... is insane,” she whispered, pressing her hand to the glass. ”The tracks just looped around a gear! How is that even possible?”

I chuckled, leaning back in my seat. ”The tracks integrate seamlessly with the cityʼs moving parts. Those gears arenʼt just for show-theyʼre part of the system. The tracks adjust and

realign themselves as the city shifts.”

”Youʼre saying the city changes?” Zora asked, her voice tinged with disbelief.

”Exactly,” I said. ”Kharaldur is alive, constantly evolving. The Mechanized Transit Web

adapts in real-time to keep everything running smoothly.”

The gondola slowed to a stop, and we stepped onto a bustling platform with branching paths leading to various transit options.

”See that?” I pointed to a massive, rotating hub at the stationʼs centre. ”From here, you can switch to different types of transport depending on where youʼre headed.”

Zora followed my gaze, her curiosity piqued. ”What types?”

”There are gondolas for long distances, gearwalks for shorter trips within a sector, and vertical lifts for moving between levels. And those,” I added, pointing to smaller, pod-like vehicles zipping along a nearby track, ”are gyrospheres-for individual travel or off-grid

destinations.”

As we navigated the station, Zoraʼs amazement only deepened. Everywhere she looked, dwarves moved with practised efficiency, seamlessly transitioning between modes of transit.

”This is incredible,” she said, shaking her head. ”Iʼve never seen anything like it.”

”Thatʼs Kharaldur,” I said. ”A living, breathing city. The transit system isnʼt just a convenience—itʼs the cityʼs lifeblood.”

Her earlier apprehension faded, replaced by a growing smile. ”I have to admit... itʼs genius.”

”It is,” I agreed. ”And weʼve only just begun to explore.”

With that, we stepped onto another gondola, the doors hissing shut behind us. As the vehicle sped forward, weaving through the cityʼs mechanical heart, I couldnʼt help but feel a deep sense of feeling like I was back home. Kharaldur wasnʼt just a city-it was a masterpiece, a testament to what ingenuity and determination could achieve. And as I watched Zoraʼs eyes light up with wonder, I knew our journey through its marvels was only just beginning.

”This gives Zora the opportunity she needs.ʼ

I smirked as I gazed at the changing scenario happening all around me. The world kept flashing while the scene of the changing world kept happening around me. My gaze travelled towards Zora, who was watching it all in wonder. I could also sense her discomfort about the city, too, the changing tunes of the mechanical parts not being something in which she was

finding any comfort.

”How do they live through this change?”

Zora asked me with an annoyed expression, to which I replied,

”I guess after some time, you get used to the sound, it becomes a part of you. Plus, to these creation-crazy dwarves, this will just be music to their ears.”

My words made Zora chuckle as she looked at the moving world. The darkness clouded over

us, with the night sky shining. It was already a very deep night by now, but the cityʼs beauty was still here from the light spread all around this place, giving it a certain beauty that

couldnʼt be taken away from it.

”This place is so different...”

Zora muttered, and I nodded my head at it. This place, in a certain sense, can indeed match the world level of my past world, which gives me some nostalgia at times I spent here. ”Letʼs have some food when we get to the Gearlock District,” I spoke with a wide smile.
