My Infinite System.

Weeks passed.

The Academy swallowed them both like a whale swallowing fish—effortlessly, indifferently, with barely a ripple. Finn attended classes. Lucian attended Finn. That was the arrangement. The council had agreed, reluctantly, after three more meetings and two more demonstrations. Lucian could come. Lucian could stay. Lucian could teach. But he couldn’t interfere with Academy business.

He didn’t interfere. He observed. And while he observed, he learned.

The library became his second home. Not the public sections—the restricted ones, the ones the council had grudgingly granted Finn access to. Lucian read everything. History. Theory. Spellcraft. Artifact analysis. He read books that hadn’t been opened in centuries, their pages brittle, their bindings cracked. He read journals written by mages long dead, their handwriting shaky, their conclusions sometimes wrong.

He corrected them silently. Made notes. Moved on.

By the end of the second week, he’d mapped the entire magical framework of this world. The seven affinities. The mana channels. The way spells were constructed, layered, triggered. It was elegant in its way. Inefficient, but elegant.

By the end of the third week, he’d started creating.

New spells. Not variations on existing ones—entirely new constructs. Spells that shouldn’t work according to Academy theory. Spells that combined affinities the books said couldn’t be combined. Spells that drew mana from sources the instructors didn’t know existed.

He didn’t hide what he was doing.

That was the problem.

---

Professor Aldric Thorn taught Advanced Elemental Theory on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He was a tall man with a sharp beard and sharper opinions. He’d been at the Academy for forty years. He’d written seven textbooks. He did not like being contradicted.

”Miss Elara,” he said one morning, pointing at a diagram on the chalkboard, ”what is the primary limitation of cross-affinity spellcasting?”

Elara Vane—no relation to the Magister—stood up. She was a third-year student, sharp as her namesake, with dark hair and darker eyes. ”Mana channel degradation, Professor. The channels can’t handle conflicting affinities simultaneously.”

”Correct. And why not?”

”Because each affinity resonates at a different frequency. Forcing them together creates interference. The mana tears itself apart.”

Thorn nodded, satisfied. He turned to write something on the board.

From the back of the room, a voice spoke. Quiet. Calm. Uninvited.

”That’s not entirely accurate.”

Thorn’s chalk stopped. The room went silent. Students turned to look at the back row, where Lucian sat with his feet up on an empty chair, a book open in his lap.

”Excuse me?” Thorn said.

”The interference isn’t caused by frequency mismatch. It’s caused by inadequate channel structuring. If you build a spiral conduit instead of a straight one, the frequencies harmonize rather than conflict.”

Thorn stared at him. The students stared at him. Elara stared at him.

”That’s... not in any textbook,” Thorn said.

”I know.”

”Then how do you—”

”I figured it out.” Lucian turned a page. ”Don’t let me interrupt. You were saying?”

Thorn didn’t continue. He stood at the board, chalk in hand, and for the first time in forty years, had nothing to say.

---

Word spread.

It always did.

Lucian Black. The outsider. The teacher with no credentials. The man who could do things that shouldn’t be possible.

Students whispered about him in the dining hall. Instructors argued about him in the faculty lounge. The council debated him in closed sessions that lasted late into the night.

He ignored all of it.

He created a potion that doubled mana regeneration. The Academy’s alchemists said it was impossible. He brewed a batch in the common room and left it on the table for anyone to take.

He designed a training regimen that strengthened mana channels faster than any known method. The combat instructors demanded he share it. He wrote it on a piece of paper and pinned it to the bulletin board.

He enchanted a set of practice crystals to show affinities the standard crystals couldn’t detect. The testing officials called it a fake. He demonstrated it on a first-year student who’d been told she had no affinity. The crystal glowed purple. Spirit affinity. The girl cried.

Lucian walked away.

---

Finn watched it all from a distance. His classes were fine. His instructors were competent. His classmates were... classmates. Some friendly. Some hostile. Most just confused about who he was and why he mattered.

He didn’t care about any of them.

He cared about Lucian.

”You’re making enemies,” Finn said one evening. They were in their quarters—a small suite the Academy had grudgingly provided. Lucian sat at a desk covered in notes, diagrams, and vials. Finn sat on the bed, polishing his boots.

”Probably,” Lucian said.

”The council is going to do something.”

”Probably.”

”Aren’t you worried?”

Lucian set down his pen. Turned to look at Finn. ”I came to this world to find someone. I didn’t find her. But I found you. And you wanted to come to the Academy. So we came.” He shrugged. ”That’s it. That’s the whole plan.”

”That’s a terrible plan.”

”It’s not a plan. It’s a distraction.”

Finn set down his boots. ”You’re distracting yourself from Evelyn.”

Lucian didn’t answer.

”You said she was family. You said you’d find her. Now you’re here, making potions and arguing with professors, and she’s still... wherever she is.”

Lucian’s jaw tightened. ”I haven’t forgotten.”

”Then why aren’t you looking?”

”Because sometimes looking makes the thing you’re looking for hide deeper.” Lucian stood up, walked to the window. Outside, the Academy grounds stretched out, dark and quiet. ”I need her to find me.”

”What if she can’t?”

”Then I’ll find her. Eventually.” He turned back to Finn. ”But right now, I’m here. And you’re here. And you need to be ready.”

”Ready for what?”

Lucian didn’t answer. He sat back down, picked up his pen, and returned to his notes.

---

The instructors started watching him.

Not subtly. They didn’t know how to be subtle. Professor Thorn stood in the back of the lecture hall during Lucian’s private sessions with Finn, taking notes on a pad he tried to hide. Master Corvin lurked outside their quarters, pretending to inspect the hallway sconces. Even Elara Voss—the Magister, not the student—found reasons to walk past their door.

Lucian let them watch.

He taught Finn advanced mana control. He demonstrated cross-affinity spellcasting. He created a small storm in the practice yard, rain and lightning and wind, all perfectly controlled, all perfectly contained.

A crowd gathered.

Students. Instructors. Even a few councilmembers, standing at the edges, pretending they weren’t there.

Lucian dismissed the storm with a wave. The clouds vanished. The sun returned.

”Again,” Finn said.

”No. You need to practice the basics first.”

”The basics are boring.”

”The basics save your life.” Lucian turned to walk away. The crowd parted for him. No one spoke. No one moved.

He walked back to their quarters, alone.

---

That night, a knock came at the door.

Finn answered it. A girl stood in the hallway—young, maybe fourteen, with red hair and freckles and eyes that couldn’t decide where to look.

”I’m Mira,” she said. ”I’m a first-year. I heard about what you did. The crystals. The spirit affinity.”

Finn blinked. ”That was Lucian. Not me.”

”I know. But you’re his student. So I thought...” She trailed off, embarrassed. ”I thought maybe you could teach me. The Academy won’t. They don’t know how.”

Finn looked back at Lucian. Lucian was at his desk, not looking up, but his pen had stopped moving.

”Come in,” Finn said.

Mira stepped inside.

The door closed.

Somewhere in the Academy, another instructor started taking notes.
