My Infinite System.

The spear of light reversed its course, but Luminar was fast. He dissolved it into motes of energy before it could strike him. His focus, however, was broken. Everyone’s was.

The groaning from the Vault’s core became a deafening roar. The cracks widened, and then it shattered.

But it didn’t explode. It dissolved. The entire core, the prison that had held back eons of nightmares, vanished into a cloud of black and violet particles. They didn’t hang in the air. They shot outwards, phasing through the walls of the Vault, spreading out into the frozen universe beyond.

Some of the particles, drawn to the strongest Aethel presence, swirled around Alistair. They sank into his skin, and his body began to change. His form flickered, becoming less solid, more like a storm given shape. The power radiating from him intensified, becoming something ancient and ravenous. The laughter died in his throat, replaced by a cold, focused silence.

He looked at Luminar and Zora, trapped in Lucy’s violet dome. His eyes, now pools of swirling darkness, held a millennia of bitterness.

”You,” he said, his voice now a chorus of whispers. ”The children we nurtured. The Diva, who we taught to build. The Ashura, who we taught to break and rebuild. We shared reality with you. We called you siblings.”

He took a step forward, and the dome around him trembled. Lucy grunted, straining to hold it.

”And you repaid us with fire and blood. You called us monsters because you were afraid of the responsibility we carried. You thought you could kill a fundamental force of existence.”

Another step. Cracks appeared in Lucy’s barrier.

”My revenge was going to be clean. A reset. A return to potential. But now...” He gestured to the particles still streaming out into the cosmos. ”Now, you get to meet the neighbors we locked away for your own good. The concepts too dangerous to exist. The ideas that break minds. The errors even we couldn’t fix.”

He smiled, a terrible, empty thing.

”Let’s see your order and your chaos stand against the truly formless.”

With a final, contemptuous flick of his wrist, Alistair shattered Lucy’s dome. The backlash sent her stumbling back into Marc.

Luminar and Zora were free, but they weren’t looking at Alistair anymore. They were staring in horror at the empty space where the Vault’s core had been, understanding dawning that a plague had just been released upon the universe.

Alistair ignored them. His work was done. The cage was open. He began to walk towards the exit, a path simply opening before him.

Marc and Lucy rushed to Lucian, who was still on his knees, breathing heavily.

”Lucian!” Lucy cried, helping him up.

He looked at them, his face pale but his eyes sharp. ”The particles... what escaped...”

”We’ll handle it,” Marc said, his voice firm. He looked at the fading stream of nightmares flowing into the universe. ”We’ll find them. We’ll contain them.”

Lucy nodded. ”We’ll protect everyone we can.”

Lucian looked from one to the other, a deep, painful pride swelling in his chest. This was it. The family he’d fought for. He gave a single, slow nod. ”I know you will.”

As his siblings turned, ready to face the storm of escaped horrors, a final, heavy weight settled on Lucian. He was alone again.

Cael’s voice was quiet in his mind, devoid of its usual synthetic tone, almost gentle. There is no other way, Lucian. You see that now, don’t you?

Lucian watched Marc and Lucy vanish, chasing the echoes of the Vault. He looked at the spot where his father had been. He felt the immense, hungry power Alistair now wielded, a power amplified by the very horrors he had unleashed.

”I know,” Lucian whispered.

He closed his eyes. He wasn’t reaching for the Infinal God. Not yet. That was the end. There was one thing he had to do first.

He reached for something else. The core of his own power, the ability to manipulate the infinite. He didn’t pull it into himself. He pushed it outwards, a silent, invisible wave that spread across the universe.

On the bridge of the Nova Sanctum, Reia suddenly felt a surge of clarity. The complex sensor data she was analyzing became simple, intuitive.

Evelyn, at the weapons console, found her reflexes sharpened, her aim becoming preternaturally perfect.

Silas, trying to reroute power, understood the ship’s systems on an instinctual level.

Vyn felt her senses expand, the hidden layers of reality becoming as clear as day.

Kaelis, still small, felt his ancient power rekindle, growing stronger than it had been in centuries.

And out in the void, Marc and Lucy, hunting the first of the escaped concepts, felt a warm, familiar energy wrap around them like a shield. Their own powers flared brighter, sharper, more controlled. They knew, without needing to be told, what it was. A final gift. A brother’s protection.

Lucian opened his eyes. The effort had cost him. He was even weaker now, having given away a part of his own potential to strengthen his friends. But it was done. He had given them a fighting chance.

Now, there was only one thing left.

He pushed himself to his feet, his body protesting every movement. He looked towards the path his father had taken.

”But first,” he said, his voice a dry rasp, filled with a cold, final resolve. ”I have to get rid of Papa Dearest.”

He took a step forward, then another. Each one was heavier than the last. He was a man walking to his own execution, ready to pay any price to save what was left of his family.

He found Alistair not far away, standing amidst the swirling remnants of the Vault, a dark king surveying his new, broken kingdom.

Alistair turned, sensing his approach. He looked at Lucian’s weakened state and smiled.

”Come to beg, my son? Or to die?”

Lucian didn’t answer. He just raised his hand, and the air around them began to crackle with the last dregs of his power.

The final battle was about to begin. And Lucian knew, with absolute certainty, that he was not going to survive it.
