My Infinite System.

The inn room became a laboratory.

Not the kind with glass tubes and bubbling liquids. The kind with a man sitting cross-legged on a bed, eyes closed, hands resting on his knees, doing absolutely nothing visible while his mind tore apart the fabric of reality.

Finn watched from the other bed, eating a pastry he’d bought from the bakery downstairs. Three days in the capital and he still wasn’t used to the taste of real food. Butter. Sugar. Flakes that melted on his tongue. He ate slowly, savoring each bite, because old habits died hard and his stomach still expected the next meal to be the last.

”You’ve been sitting there for two hours,” he said.

Lucian didn’t open his eyes. ”Time is relative.”

”For who?”

”For me.”

Finn finished the pastry, licked his fingers, and stretched out on the bed. The mattress was soft. The blankets were warm. The pillow didn’t smell like mold. He closed his eyes and listened to the sounds of the capital drifting through the window. Carriages. Conversations. Someone practicing a musical instrument two buildings over.

”Are you going to teach me magic?” he asked.

Lucian opened his eyes.

”Yes.”

Finn sat up. ”Really?”

”Really.” Lucian uncrossed his legs and swung them over the side of the bed. He looked tired—not physically, but in the way someone looks when they’ve been thinking too hard for too long. ”But I need to understand it first.”

”Understand what? Magic?”

”How it works. The rules. The limitations.” Lucian stood up and walked to the window. ”I can do anything. Create anything. Unmake anything. But that’s not teaching. Teaching requires knowing the path. The steps. The way a normal person would climb the mountain, not just flying to the top.”

Finn frowned. ”You’re saying you don’t know how magic works?”

”I’m saying I know how my power works. Your magic is different. It has rules I don’t understand yet.” Lucian turned from the window. ”So I’m going to learn them.”

”How?”

”The same way I learn everything. Observation. Analysis. Application.” He reached into his pocket—that impossible pocket—and pulled out a stack of books. Ten of them. Heavy ones. The kind with leather bindings and gold lettering.

Finn stared. ”Where did you—”

”Library. While you were sleeping.” Lucian dropped the books on the table. ”These are the standard texts. Academy curriculum. First through fourth year.”

”You stole them?”

”I borrowed them. Indefinitely.”

Finn walked over and touched the top book. The cover read Fundamental Mana Theory: A Comprehensive Introduction. He opened it. The pages were dense with diagrams and formulas and words he didn’t understand.

”I can’t read this,” he said.

”Then I’ll teach you.”

”To read?”

”To understand.” Lucian pulled out a second stack—smaller books, thinner, illustrated. ”These are primers. For children. They’ll get you started.”

Finn looked at the primers. Then at the textbooks. Then at Lucian.

”You planned this.”

”I plan everything.”

”You said you were tired of walking in circles.”

”I was. Now I’m walking in a different direction.” Lucian sat back on his bed and picked up the top textbook. ”The search isn’t going anywhere. I’ve hit every lead. Followed every trace. Cael has analyzed every signature and found nothing new.”

”Then what do you do?”

”Wait.” Lucian opened the book. ”And prepare.”

---

The next two weeks were a blur.

Lucian barely left the inn. He read every book in his stolen stack, then went back for more. He cross-referenced theories, tested hypotheses, and performed experiments that involved holding his hand over candles and watching the flames flicker.

Finn trained.

Mornings were for the body. Push-ups, squats, running, punching, kicking. Lucian created supplements that tasted like dirt but made Finn’s muscles recover overnight. He crafted balms that healed cuts before they could scar. He designed exercises that targeted weaknesses Finn didn’t even know he had.

Afternoons were for the mind. Reading, writing, arithmetic. Lucian taught Finn the alphabet again, because the street schooling he’d gotten was incomplete. He taught him vocabulary, grammar, the difference between a noun and a verb. He taught him how to think, not just memorize.

Evenings were for theory.

”Magic is energy,” Lucian said on the fifth evening. They sat across from each other, a candle between them. ”But not like fire or lightning. It’s potential. Unshaped. It exists in everything—the air, the ground, your own body.”

Finn nodded. He had a notebook now. He wrote things down.

”Mana is the measurement of that potential. Every living thing produces it. Some produce more than others. Mages are people who can channel it, shape it, release it.”

”How?”

”That’s the question.” Lucian pointed at the candle. ”The Academy teaches seven affinities. Fire, water, earth, air, light, dark, spirit. Each affinity is a different method of shaping mana. A different filter.”

”So if you’re born with fire affinity, you can only do fire magic?”

”In theory. But the texts suggest that affinity is not destiny. It’s inclination. Preference.” Lucian leaned forward. ”The best mages can access multiple affinities. The legends say the first mages could access all seven.”

”What happened to them?”

”They died. Or disappeared. Or never existed.” Lucian sat back. ”The records are unclear.”

Finn wrote something in his notebook. ”What about spirit affinity? The one I want?”

Lucian was quiet for a moment. ”Spirit affinity is different. It doesn’t shape mana. It perceives. Mages with spirit affinity can see the connections between things. Between people. Between worlds.”

”Is that dangerous?”

”It can be. Perception without understanding leads to madness.” Lucian looked at him. ”But understanding without perception is just blindness in a different direction.”

Finn thought about that. Wrote it down.

---

On the eighth day, Lucian created a potion.

He did it in the room, with nothing but a cup of water and his own will. Finn watched as the water darkened, swirled, turned a deep shade of purple.

”Drink this,” Lucian said.

”What does it do?”

”It’ll expand your mana channels. Make your body more receptive to magic. The Academy uses a similar treatment, but theirs takes months and has side effects.”

”Does yours have side effects?”

”You might vomit.”

Finn drank.

He vomited.

But when he woke up the next morning, he could feel something new. A humming. A warmth. Like there was a second heartbeat in his chest, soft and steady.

”Is this what magic feels like?” he asked.

”That’s mana. Magic is what you do with it.” Lucian handed him a small crystal. ”Hold this. Focus on the warmth. Try to push it into the crystal.”

Finn held the crystal. Closed his eyes. Focused.

Nothing happened.

”Again,” Lucian said.

Nothing.

”Again.”

He tried for an hour. By the end, his head ached and his hands were shaking and the crystal hadn’t changed at all.

”I can’t do it,” Finn said.

”You can. You just haven’t yet.” Lucian took the crystal. ”Try again tomorrow.”

---

On the twelfth day, something changed.

Finn was sitting on the floor, eyes closed, the crystal in his hands. He’d been at it for two hours. His head throbbed. His chest felt tight. The humming warmth was there, but it wouldn’t move. It wouldn’t listen.

Then he stopped trying to push.

He’d been thinking about it wrong. Pushing was force. Force was resistance. What if he didn’t push? What if he just... invited?

The warmth shifted.

Not much. Just a flicker. A suggestion. But it moved.

Finn opened his eyes.

The crystal was glowing. Faint. Barely visible. But glowing.

Lucian was watching from the other bed. He didn’t smile. He didn’t nod. But something in his eyes softened.

”Again,” he said.

Finn closed his eyes.

The warmth moved again.
