My Infinite System.

The numbers on the orb glowed, cold and final.

Lucian’s mind was a storm. His father’s triumphant smile. Marc’s desperate struggle with Lucy. The entire universe waiting outside to destroy him for a crime he hadn’t even committed.

A familiar, calm voice spoke in his mind. It was Cael, the system interface he’d ignored for so long.

You know you can end this right now. You just have to accept it. Become the Infinal God.

”No,” Lucian thought back, the refusal instant and absolute. ”It’s too late. The transformation would take too long. By the time I finished, this would all be over. He would have won.”

The reset was always inevitable, Lucian. It is a function of this reality. A cycle.

The timer ticked down.

00:00:04

”What are you talking about?” Lucian’s focus split between the looming orb and the silent conversation in his head.

Whether Alistair triggers it now or not is irrelevant. The universe was always going to reset. The only question was the catalyst. The Aethel bloodline is that catalyst. It is your purpose.

”My purpose is to protect my family! Not destroy everything!”

When you ascend to the Infinal God state, the universe resets. It is not an act of malice. It is an act of acknowledgement. Reality reconstitutes itself to affirm the birth of a new supreme entity. It is the final step. I did not tell you before because I knew you would refuse. And you have. You are refusing now.

00:00:03

”Of course I’m refusing!” Lucian screamed in his mind. ”I won’t do it! I won’t be the reason everything ends!”

Then you cannot defeat your father, Cael stated, its tone final and utterly without emotion. The power differential is absolute. You are choosing to lose.

Alistair watched him, his head slightly tilted, curious about the silent battle raging behind his son’s eyes. The victory in his own gaze was complete.

00:00:02

Lucian looked at the timer. Two seconds. He looked at Marc, still holding back the storm that was their sister. He looked at his father, the architect of all this pain.

He couldn’t accept the transformation. He wouldn’t become the monster everyone feared just to win.

But he couldn’t lose either.

There had to be another way. A third option. He wasn’t just an Aethel. He was Lucian Black. His power wasn’t just about raw force. It was about...

...control.

Space. Time.

00:00:01

The final second began to tick.

And Lucian made his choice.

He didn’t reach for a godhood he didn’t want. He reached for something deeper, something that was uniquely his. He reached into the fabric of everything around him, into the flow of time itself, and he pushed.

It wasn’t a blast. It wasn’t an attack. It was a command.

Stop.

The timer froze.

00:00:01

The number didn’t change.

The violent, screaming energy pouring from Lucy simply hung in the air, a frozen sculpture of violet light. Marc was caught mid-stride, his hand outstretched, a look of determined hope etched onto his motionless face.

Alistair’s triumphant smile was locked in place. But his eyes... his eyes were alive. They moved, shifting from the frozen orb to Lucian. The triumph in them melted away, replaced by first confusion, then dawning, profound shock.

Outside the Vault, across the entire universe, everything stopped.

On the bridge of the Nova Sanctum, Reia was frozen over her console. Silas was in the middle of a wisecrack, his mouth open. Evelyn’s hand was poised over the firing controls. Vyn’s eyes were wide with sensing something immense. Kaelis was a tiny, golden statue.

The vast, united armada hung in the void. The Diva ships, perfect and still. The Ashura hordes, locked in mid-roar. The Psion’s wave of thought, suspended. The Mechanist’s weapons, powered but silent. Every star, every planet, every molecule ceased its motion.

The entire universe was a paused recording.

The only things moving were Lucian, Alistair, and the silent voice in Lucian’s head.

Alistair slowly, deliberately, turned his head. The motion was labored, as if he were pushing through invisible sludge, but he could move. He looked at Lucian, a strange, almost proud light in his eyes.

”Incredible,” Alistair breathed, his voice the only sound in the absolute silence. ”A localized temporal stasis is one thing... but this... a universal cessation? To hold the flow of time for all of creation... the energy required... the will...” He shook his head, a genuine, bewildered smile on his face. ”And you did it without even fully awakening. You truly are my son.”

Lucian stood panting, the strain immense. He could feel it, a colossal weight on his soul, like he was holding up the sky with his bare hands. He knew he couldn’t hold it for long. He had only bought a moment. A single, stolen moment in a dead universe.

”It’s over, Father,” Lucian said, his voice strained but steady. He raised his sword, the blade pointing at Alistair once more. ”No reset. No Vault. Just you and me.”

Alistair’s smile didn’t fade. It just changed. It became sad, almost pitying.

”Oh, Lucian,” he said softly. ”You still don’t understand, do you? You think you’ve stopped it.”

He took a slow, heavy step forward.

”You haven’t stopped anything. You’ve just given me a front-row seat.”

He gestured to the frozen chaos around them, to Marc and Lucy suspended in their struggle.

”Look at what you’re doing. Look at the power you’re wielding to simply pause the inevitable. This is not the act of a man who wants to save the universe. This is the act of a god who is afraid of his own destiny.”

Alistair took another step, now only a few feet away.

”You can’t hold time still forever, my boy. The moment you let go... it all comes rushing back. The timer will finish its count. The Vault will open. And you...” he leaned in, his voice a whisper, ”...you will have exhausted yourself. You’ll be weak. Helpless.”

He looked Lucian up and down, his expression one of tragic finality.

”You had a choice. Join me and control the reset. Or die here with the rest of your friends when it happens. And you... you magnificent, stubborn fool... you chose to just delay the appointment.”

Alistair raised his own hands, and a faint, dark energy began to swirl around them. He too could manipulate reality here, in this frozen moment.

”So let’s not waste this quiet time you’ve made for us,” he said, his voice dropping to a deadly calm. ”Let’s have our final conversation. Father and son.”

The frozen universe waited. The fate of everything now rested on a battle between two men in a bubble of stopped time. And the clock, though stilled, was still ticking.
