My Infinite System.

The week before the Awakening Ceremony, Lucian stopped the physical training.

No more push-ups at dawn. No more sprints until collapse. No more kicks against trees until his shins bruised. Finn woke on the twenty-second day to find Lucian sitting by the window, watching the sunrise, with a cup of tea that hadn’t been there a moment ago.

”Sit,” Lucian said.

Finn sat.

”Today, we work on presence.”

Finn blinked. ”Presence?”

”How you stand. How you walk. How you hold your silence.” Lucian set down the cup. ”The Ceremony isn’t about magic. Not really. It’s about perception. People will watch you. Judge you. Decide your worth before the crystal even glows.”

”I don’t care what people think.”

”You should.” Lucian leaned forward. ”Perception is power. If they see a street rat, they’ll treat you like a street rat. If they see someone worth watching, they’ll make space for you. Space you can use.”

Finn didn’t argue. He’d learned not to argue. Lucian was almost always right.

They spent the morning on posture. Shoulders back. Chin level. Hands relaxed at his sides, not clenched, not hiding in his pockets. Lucian made him walk across the room a hundred times, then a hundred more, until the movement felt natural instead of performed.

”The key is to stop thinking about it,” Lucian said. ”Confidence isn’t knowing you’re better than everyone else. It’s knowing you don’t need to prove anything.”

”That’s deep.”

”It’s practical.”

They worked on speech in the afternoon. Not vocabulary—Lucian had already expanded that. Tone. Pace. The weight of silence between words.

”You talk too fast when you’re nervous,” Lucian observed.

”I’m not nervous.”

”You’re always nervous. You’ve just learned to hide it.” Lucian handed him a book. ”Read this. Slowly. Pretend every word matters.”

Finn read. Slowly. Every word mattered.

By evening, his jaw ached from holding his mouth differently. His back hurt from standing straight. His hands felt strange hanging at his sides instead of tucked in his pockets.

”This is exhausting,” he said.

”Good. Exhaustion means change.”

---

The next day, Lucian taught him etiquette.

How to greet a noble. How to excuse himself from a conversation. How to eat soup without slurping, bread without crumbling, wine without spilling. Finn had never drunk wine in his life. He spilled it twice. Lucian made him start over.

”Why do I need to know this?” Finn asked, after the third spill.

”Because the Academy is full of nobles. They’ll test you. Not with magic—with manners. If you fail, they’ll dismiss you.”

”Let them dismiss me.”

”And lose access to the archives? The restricted texts?” Lucian refilled the cup. ”Try again.”

Finn tried again. He didn’t spill.

By the end of the third day, he could navigate a formal dinner setting without looking like a lost child. He could bow at the correct angle. He could address a duke without stuttering.

He hated every second of it.

But he didn’t argue.

---

The fourth day, Lucian took him to a tailor again.

Not the same one. A better one. A shop hidden in a side street, with no sign on the door and a bell that chimed twice when they entered.

The tailor was an old woman with sharp eyes and missing fingers. She looked at Finn, looked at Lucian, and nodded once.

”Ceremony clothes,” Lucian said.

”Color?”

”Dark blue. Silver trim. No house crest.”

The woman measured Finn in silence. Arms, chest, waist, inseam. She moved quickly, efficiently, like someone who’d done this a thousand times. When she was done, she disappeared into the back room without a word.

Finn looked at Lucian. ”How do you know her?”

”I don’t. She was the best in the city fifty years ago. Retired. I convinced her to come back.”

”How?”

”I asked nicely.”

Finn doubted that was the whole story. But he didn’t ask.

---

The clothes arrived the next morning.

Dark blue, like Lucian had said. Wool so soft it felt like silk. Silver thread along the cuffs and collar, subtle enough to miss if you weren’t looking. The trousers fit perfectly. The tunic hung just right. The boots—new ones, matching—had been polished to a mirror shine.

Finn stood in front of the mirror and didn’t recognize himself.

Not the street rat from the alley. Not the hungry kid who’d stolen bread and slept in doorways. Someone else. Someone who belonged in this city, in this world, in this life.

”Well?” Lucian asked from the doorway.

Finn didn’t turn around. ”Is this a costume?”

”No. It’s armor.”

”Armor doesn’t feel this soft.”

”The best armor doesn’t need to be hard.” Lucian walked over, stood beside him, looked at their reflections. ”You’re ready.”

”How do you know?”

”Because you stopped flinching.”

Finn looked at his own reflection. Looked at his hands—steady now, not shaking. Looked at his eyes—clear, focused.

Lucian was right. He wasn’t flinching.

---

The morning of the Ceremony arrived cold and clear.

Finn woke before dawn, alone in the room. Lucian was already gone—a note on the table, written in that precise handwriting.

Meet me at the Academy gates. Don’t be late.

Finn dressed slowly. Dark blue tunic. Silver trim. Boots polished. Hair combed. He checked himself in the mirror three times before he was satisfied.

The streets were quiet at this hour. Shopkeepers opening shutters. Bakers loading ovens. A few early risers walking dogs or carrying baskets to market. No one looked at him twice. He was just another young man in fine clothes, heading toward the Academy.

The gates were already crowded when he arrived.

Young men and women in every color of the rainbow, accompanied by parents, tutors, servants. Some looked confident. Some looked terrified. Most looked like they hadn’t slept.

Lucian stood apart from the crowd, leaning against a lamppost, hands in his pockets. He was dressed the same as always—simple clothes, no ornament, nothing to mark him as anything other than what he appeared to be.

”You’re early,” Finn said.

”I’m always early.”

”You wrote ’don’t be late.’”

”You were going to be late. I wanted to make sure you weren’t.”

Finn didn’t argue. He’d stopped arguing.

They stood together, watching the crowd. Families embraced. Teachers gave last-minute advice. A girl in green robes was crying, comforted by an older woman who looked exactly like her.

”Your family isn’t here,” Finn observed.

”I don’t have family here.”

”Everyone has family somewhere.”

Lucian was quiet for a moment. Then he said, ”My family is scattered. Across worlds. Across realities. Some of them don’t even know I exist anymore.”

Finn thought about that. About distance. About loss. About the mother he’d never see again.

”I’m sorry,” he said.

”Don’t be.” Lucian pushed off the lamppost. ”Come on. The line is moving.”

---

The Academy courtyard was enormous.

Flagstones worn smooth by centuries of students. A fountain in the center, water dancing in patterns that changed every few seconds. Buildings on all sides—grey stone, tall windows, towers that seemed to touch the sky.

Students lined up in rows, organized by the first letter of their last name. Finn stood in the F section, surrounded by strangers, while Lucian found a spot against the wall and watched.

The ceremony began with speeches.

An old man in gold robes welcomed them. A woman in silver explained the process. A stern-faced official read the rules in a monotone that made Finn’s eyelids heavy.

Then the testing began.

One by one, students approached a large crystal set on a pedestal. They placed their hands on its surface. The crystal glowed. An official announced their affinities. The crowd murmured appreciation or disappointment.

”Marcus Abel. Fire. Lower-middle potential.”

”Serena Brightwood. Water, Air. Upper-middle potential.”

”Corvin Darkwood. Dark. High potential.”

Finn watched. Listened. Learned.

The nobles went first. They always went first. Their families had paid for priority placement, for extra coaching, for every advantage money could buy. Some of them glowed brightly. Some didn’t. The crowd applauded either way.

Then the commoners. The scholarship students. The ones who’d earned their place through testing and luck and desperate hope.

Their glows were dimmer. Their potentials lower. The crowd’s applause was polite but softer.

Finn’s stomach tightened.

”Your turn,” the official called.

Finn walked to the pedestal.

The crystal was warm under his palms. Rough. Imperfect. He could feel the mana inside it, dormant, waiting.

”Name?” the official asked.

”Finn.”

”Just Finn?”

”Just Finn.”

The official raised an eyebrow but didn’t comment. ”Place your hands on the crystal. Focus your mana. Do not force it.”

Finn closed his eyes.

The warmth was there, just like always. Fire. Water. Earth. He’d awakened those weeks ago. He knew them. Trusted them.

But there was more now.

Lucian’s training had pushed him further. The supplements, the exercises, the endless hours of meditation. He’d felt new pathways opening. New affinities stirring.

He reached for them.

The crystal glowed red. Fire.

Gasps from the crowd. Red was common, but the brightness wasn’t. The official leaned forward.

The crystal glowed blue. Water.

Murmurs. Two affinities was rare. Two bright affinities was rarer.

The crystal glowed brown. Earth.

Silence.

Three affinities. The crowd held its breath.

Finn opened his eyes. The crystal was still glowing—red, blue, brown. But he wasn’t done.

He reached deeper.

The crystal glowed grey. Air.

Someone gasped. A fourth affinity. The official’s mouth fell open.

Finn kept reaching.

The space around his hands shimmered. Not light. Not color. Something else. A distortion. A bending.

”Space affinity,” a voice whispered. ”He has space affinity.”

The official was writing now, fast, his hand shaking.

Finn reached deeper still.

The crystal glowed white. Not light—time. The flow of seconds slowed around his fingers, then sped up, then settled.

”Time affinity,” the official breathed. ”He has time affinity.”

Six affinities. No one in recorded history had six affinities.

But Finn wasn’t done.

He reached for the last one. The one he’d wanted from the beginning. The one his mother had said he had.

Spirit.

The crystal didn’t glow.

It sang.

A pure note, high and clear, that echoed off the courtyard walls and hung in the air like a bell rung in a cathedral. The water in the fountain stopped moving. The clouds overhead parted. For one moment, one perfect moment, everything was still.

Then the moment passed.

The crystal dimmed. The fountain flowed. The clouds returned.

But everyone in that courtyard knew they’d witnessed something impossible.

The official stared at his notes, then at Finn, then back at his notes. ”Seven affinities,” he said, his voice barely audible. ”Fire, water, earth, air, space, time, and spirit. Seven. All seven.”

The crowd erupted.

Not applause. Noise. Shouting. Questions. Accusations. Exclamations. Nobles demanded explanations. Commoners gaped in disbelief. Somewhere, a woman fainted.

Finn stood at the pedestal, hands still pressed to the crystal, and felt nothing.

Not pride. Not fear. Just... empty.

He looked for Lucian.

Lucian was still leaning against the wall, hands in his pockets, expression unchanged. But his eyes—his eyes were sharp. Focused. Tracking every reaction in the crowd.

He nodded once.

Good.

Finn took his hands off the crystal and stepped back.

The official grabbed his arm. ”Wait. You can’t—we need to—the Council will want to—”

”I’m not going anywhere,” Finn said. His voice was calm. Measured. He’d practiced that. ”But I need to sit down.”

The official released him. Nodded. Stumbled away to find someone more important.

Finn walked back toward the wall where Lucian stood. Students parted to let him through. Nobles stared. Commoners whispered.

He reached Lucian and leaned against the wall beside him.

”That was loud,” Finn said.

”You broke their expectations.”

”Is that bad?”

”It’s interesting.” Lucian watched the chaos spread across the courtyard. Officials running. Nobles arguing. Students crying. ”Interesting is good. Interesting gets attention.”

”Isn’t attention what we wanted?”

”It’s what we needed.” Lucian pushed off the wall. ”Come on. The real work starts now.”

”What work?”

”Dealing with the consequences.”

They walked toward the Academy gates. Behind them, the courtyard boiled with speculation and wonder and fear.

Finn didn’t look back.

He’d stopped flinching.

And somewhere in the crowd, Dorian Ashford watched him leave, eyes narrow, smile gone.

”Well,” Dorian murmured to himself. ”That’s inconvenient.”

He turned and walked the other way.

He had messages to send.
