My Infinite System.

By the end of the second week, Finn could make the crystal glow on command. Not bright. Not steady. But there.

Lucian had learned everything the Academy had to offer.

”Your magic system is inefficient,” he said one morning, over breakfast. Finn was eating eggs—real eggs, not the powdered kind—and trying not to look too happy about it.

”Thanks,” Finn said.

”It’s not an insult. It’s an observation. You have seven affinities treated as separate disciplines, when they’re clearly variations of the same underlying principle.” Lucian poked at his own plate. He didn’t eat much. Never did. ”The first mages knew this. The knowledge was lost. Probably deliberately.”

”Who would do that?”

”People who benefit from keeping mages divided. Specialized. Easier to control.”

Finn frowned. ”The Mage Council?”

”The Mage Council. The Academy. The noble houses.” Lucian shrugged. ”Power concentrates where knowledge is restricted.”

”So what do we do?”

”We do what they didn’t expect.” Lucian set down his fork. ”We break the rules.”

---

He created a training regimen.

Not the Academy’s regimen. Something new. Something that combined physical conditioning with mental discipline with mana manipulation. He made potions that accelerated neural pathways. Herbal supplements that stabilized mana flow. Techniques stolen from a dozen different worlds, adapted for this one.

Finn trained. And trained. And trained.

His body changed. The scrawny street rat filled out. Muscle where there had been bone. Strength where there had been desperation. He stood taller. Walked differently. His eyes were sharper, his hands steadier.

Lucian watched the transformation with something that might have been pride. He didn’t say it. He didn’t need to.

On the eighteenth day, he took Finn shopping.

”The clothes are unacceptable,” he said.

Finn looked down at his shirt—clean, but patched in three places. ”What’s wrong with my clothes?”

”They’re loud.”

”Loud?”

”They scream ’street rat.’” Lucian steered him into a tailor’s shop. ”We need them to whisper ’someone’s protégé.’”

Two hours later, Finn emerged in a dark grey tunic, fitted trousers, and leather boots that didn’t have holes in the soles. A simple silver clasp held his collar closed. No family crest. No house colors. Just clean lines and quality fabric.

He looked in a mirror and didn’t recognize himself.

”This is weird,” he said.

”You’ll get used to it.”

”What if I don’t?”

”Then you’ll be uncomfortable and well-dressed. There are worse fates.”

They stopped at a cobbler for inserts that made Finn’s boots fit perfectly. A barber trimmed his hair—not short, but shaped, controlled. A jeweler provided a simple ring, no stone, just polished silver, that Lucian had enchanted to measure mana output.

By the end of the day, Finn looked like a young noble.

He hated it.

He loved it.

He didn’t know what to feel.

”Don’t let it go to your head,” Lucian said as they walked back to the inn. ”Clothes don’t make the man. They just make the first impression.”

”What makes the man?”

”The choices he makes when no one’s watching.”

---

On the twenty-first day, Finn awakened his first affinity.

It happened during evening practice. He was holding the crystal, focusing on the warmth, when something shifted. The warmth didn’t just move—it changed. Became something else. Something hot.

The crystal glowed red.

Finn opened his eyes. His hands were warm. Not burning. Just warm, like he’d been holding them near a fire.

”Fire,” Lucian said.

”Fire,” Finn repeated. He looked at his hands. ”I have fire affinity.”

”You have fire affinity.”

”Is that good?”

”It’s a start.” Lucian handed him a new crystal—clear this time, uncolored. ”Try again.”

Finn closed his eyes. The warmth was still there, but it was different now. Fire wanted to burn. Fire wanted to consume. He let it.

The crystal glowed red again.

”Again,” Lucian said.

A third crystal. Finn reached for the warmth, but this time he tried something different. He didn’t let it burn. He let it flow. Like water. Like the stream they’d stopped at on the road.

The crystal glowed blue.

Finn’s eyes snapped open. ”That’s—”

”Water.” Lucian’s voice was calm, but his eyes were sharp. ”You have water affinity too.”

”But that’s... the books said—”

”The books said it’s rare to have two affinities. They didn’t say it’s impossible.” Lucian took the crystal, examined it, handed it back. ”Try for a third.”

Finn’s hands were shaking. He closed his eyes. The warmth was there—fire and water, burning and flowing. But there was something else too. Something underneath. Something solid.

The crystal glowed brown.

”Earth,” Lucian said.

Finn opened his eyes. He was breathing hard. ”Three.”

”Three.”

”I thought the maximum was three.”

”For normal people.” Lucian almost smiled. ”You’re not normal. You’re my student.”

Finn stared at the crystal. Brown, blue, red. Earth, water, fire. Three affinities. More than most mages achieved in a lifetime.

”Can I get more?” he asked.

Lucian’s smile faded. ”I don’t know. The texts don’t mention anyone with more than three. But the texts are incomplete.” He stood up, walked to the window, looked out at the capital. ”We’re going to find out.”

”How?”

”The Academy has archives. Restricted ones. Books that aren’t available to the public.” Lucian turned back to face him. ”We’re going to need access.”

”How do we get access?”

Lucian was quiet for a moment. Then he said, ”We make friends. Or we make enemies. Either way, we get noticed.”

Finn thought about Dorian Ashford, standing in the alley with his perfect smile and his expensive clothes.

”I know how to get noticed,” Finn said.

Lucian looked at him. Measured him. ”Do you?”

”I’ve been invisible my whole life. I know exactly how to do the opposite.”

Lucian nodded slowly. ”Then tomorrow, we start making noise.”

Finn looked at the crystals. Red, blue, brown. Fire, water, earth. Three affinities. A body that didn’t ache. Clothes that fit. A teacher who could create anything.

He thought about the alley where Lucian had found him. The hunger. The cold. The fear.

That was someone else’s life.

This was his now.

”Lucian,” he said.

”Hm?”

”Thank you.”

Lucian didn’t turn from the window. But his shoulders relaxed, just a fraction.

”Don’t thank me yet,” he said. ”The hard part hasn’t started.”

Outside, the capital glittered. Lights in every window. Music from every corner. A million people living their lives, unaware that something was changing.

Finn smiled.

Let them be unaware.

He was ready.
