Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The Elder God summoned Kincaid and the other remaining minor gods to a chamber none of them had seen before.

It was smaller than the observation space used during the challenge. Ninety-six places formed a broad circle around an empty floor. Each place reflected something of the god occupying it. Kincaid’s seat stood on pale stone beneath a sky that did not belong to any world. Khorren’s platform resembled black glass warmed from below. Ithara rested in a basin of clear silver liquid. Soryn’s many jointed limbs folded beneath a woven structure that moved whenever he breathed.

No spaces had been prepared for those whose champions failed.

Kincaid noticed the number before the Elder God appeared. Exactly ninety-six champions remained.

The knowledge brought relief followed by discomfort. He had hoped Max would pass. He had not needed hundreds of others to fail for that success to matter.

Khorren turned one of his faceted eyes toward him. ”Your champion returned all ten?”

”Nine reached the final gate,” Kincaid said. ”The orc bulwark was killed during the challenge and resurrected in Max’s dungeon.”

”Mine returned eight.”

Khorren did not sound triumphant. His team had passed a different seven-seal dungeon, and Kincaid knew little about what they faced. The challenges had shared a structure without sharing terrain, enemies, or solutions.

Ithara’s voice vibrated through the liquid around her. ”Six returned from mine.”

Soryn clicked two claws together. ”Nine.”

Those numbers carried consequences the completed challenge announcement had not addressed. The teams were made from dungeon creatures. Some would be restored by their own dungeon systems. Some would not. Max’s Eternal Souls had made his losses temporary, but Kincaid had seen other gods react when their champions’ creatures died permanently.

The Elder God appeared at the center of the circle.

Conversation stopped without command.

”Ninety-six champions remain.” The Elder God said. ”The first challenges removed those incapable of maintaining a dungeon under pressure. The most recent removed those incapable of sending an effective force beyond familiar territory.”

Kincaid listened for mention of what waited beyond that territory. None came.

”The incompetent have been weeded out. Those who remain have demonstrated enough value to receive preparation rather than blind testing.”

Several gods shifted. The language offered more approval than any earlier announcement.

The empty floor changed.

A darkness appeared above it, not a lack of light but a depth that seemed to extend outside the chamber. Thin lines spread across the darkness. Some ended in isolated points. Others joined in a web around a brighter central expanse.

Kincaid could not identify the worlds or connections. He understood only that the central region mattered.

”A threat approaches the Prime Universe.” the Elder God said.

The chamber remained silent.

”It has not arrived. Its path has not fully formed.

Kincaid looked at the network again. The Prime Universe was not identified, but every god present knew which part of creation the title described.

”The challenges are not entertainment. They are not a contest conducted merely to select a favored champion. A dungeon that can protect only its own core is insufficient for what may be required. Your champions must build defenses capable of enduring attack, adapting to unfamiliar enemies, and sending disciplined forces beyond the boundaries they control.”

That explained the seven-seal dungeon more clearly than its rules had. The Elder God had not cared which team collected objects fastest. He had tested whether the dungeons could deploy a unit, survive losses, judge rivals, and complete an objective in hostile ground.

Kincaid thought of Max forming the elite unit before learning the challenge’s layout. The decision now looked less like preparation for a single test and more like movement in the required direction.

”The next challenge will not begin for six months.”

The announcement produced the first visible reaction around the circle. Some gods relaxed. Others leaned toward the central image as though searching for a hidden deadline.

”Use that time. Guide your champions where guidance is permitted. Development without purpose wastes resources. Development built only to defeat the last challenge prepares for an enemy already understood.”

The network vanished.

In its place appeared pairs of unmarked lights. Forty-eight pairs.

”The next stage will compare champions directly.” The Elder God said. ”Further rules will be delivered when they become relevant.”

Kincaid understood the likely progression. Ninety-six could become forty-eight, then twenty-four, then twelve. Whether the Elder God intended to stop there or remove more remained unknown.

He recorded the numbers without treating his conclusion as fact.

”Each champion who passed will receive a reward. A uniform reward would benefit some dungeons and burden others. The reward will therefore reflect the defining trait of each champion’s dungeon.”

Images appeared briefly around the circle. Kincaid saw a moving fortress from one dungeon, a living forest that rebuilt itself in another, and a maze of mirrored space belonging to a third. Each vanished before he could study it.

He expected Max’s defining trait to be Corathen.

An entire country inside a dungeon was extraordinary even to the gods gathered here. Yet Kincaid knew the Elder God measured achievements against all dungeons that had existed, not merely the ninety-six champions. Country-sized inhabited territories had precedents. Rare ones, but precedents.

Max’s use of resurrection did not.

The buff itself was known. Applying it to outside adventurers, tying it to graveyards, using it across a country-sized population of Eternal Souls, and building economics and public trust around it had transformed a limited effect into the foundation of the dungeon.

Kincaid did not know whether the Elder God agreed.

”You will meet with me individually.” The Elder God said. ”Those meetings will establish your status and the reward entrusted to your champion.”

One place at the circle vanished.

Then another.

The gods were being called in an order Kincaid could not determine. Khorren disappeared after the ninth. Ithara after the twenty-third. Soryn remained until well past the middle.

None returned to the chamber.

When Kincaid’s turn came, the circle dissolved around him.

He appeared in a quiet room with no visible walls. The Elder God stood across from him. Between them floated a small image of Crag Mountain.

”Kincaid.”

”Elder God.”

The image expanded. Sanctuary appeared within the mountain, followed by the public levels, Undercity, and Corathen. The representation ignored exact distances to show relationships rather than scale.

”You selected a champion who passed the independent trial and the expedition trial.”

Kincaid waited. He had imagined this acknowledgment since the original competition began. Now that it arrived, it felt less like victory and more like being handed responsibility.

”I formally accept you as my apprentice.”

Warmth moved through Kincaid’s divine core. It carried no overwhelming power and no sudden bank of knowledge. A new bond settled into place, granting recognition and the promise of instruction.

Kincaid bowed. ”Thank you.”

”Your errors remain your responsibility. Your champion’s achievements do not erase them.”

”I understand.”

”Good. An apprentice who mistakes acceptance for perfection is difficult to teach.”

The image shifted to Max’s resurrection network.

”What do you consider the defining trait of his dungeon?”

”Corathen.” Kincaid answered, then reconsidered. ”That is the most visibly extraordinary feature. But inhabited territories of similar scale have existed before.”

”Continue.”

”Resurrection. Not the existence of the buff by itself. The scale and manner in which Max uses it. He has made it available to outside adventurers, built communities around its protection, and used Eternal Souls as residents rather than expendable monsters.”

”Correct.”

A new symbol appeared above the image. It resembled a gate drawn around an empty horizon.

”Your champion will receive Afterlife Authority.”

Kincaid studied the words that followed. They described an authority for creating environments connected to resurrection. The description established limits but not a required shape. Max would still pay for construction. Existing resurrection costs, cooldowns, and eligibility would remain. The authority did not resurrect anyone who could not already return.

What it offered was a place and a system between death and restoration.

The possibilities multiplied too quickly for Kincaid to follow them all.

”May I explain the approaching threat to him?” he asked.

”You may relay what I announced. Do not supply an identity you were not given or pretend certainty about the final purpose of the challenges.”

”And the future pairings?”

”Tell him only that the next stage will compare champions directly. He does not need a bracket that has not been assigned.”

Kincaid accepted the limitation.

The Elder God dismissed him with the reward record and the new apprenticeship bond intact.

He returned to his own divine space alone. For the first time since choosing Max, Kincaid did not need to contact him with a warning, an apology, or an urgent challenge rule.

He could bring good news.

Before contacting Max, Kincaid examined the apprenticeship bond. It opened portions of the Elder God’s archive that had been sealed to unaffiliated minor gods. Most remained restricted by subject or stage. He could see headings concerning dungeon warfare, planar boundaries, expeditionary command, and long-duration defense, but not the contents beneath them.

The headings supported the announcement without revealing the threat. The Elder God expected dungeons to do more than survive isolated attacks. Something about the Prime Universe’s boundary required forces capable of leaving their prepared ground.

Kincaid searched for Afterlife Authority. The archive returned historical references to death-aligned domains, soul refuges, and resurrection staging environments. None matched Max’s reward exactly. Some belonged to gods rather than dungeons. Others operated without restoration to living bodies.

He closed the search before fragments became assumptions.

Max deserved the distinction between precedent and possibility. Kincaid would not present half-related examples as instructions simply to appear knowledgeable.

A message from Khorren arrived while he organized his report.

Accepted. Reward granted. Six months.

Kincaid answered with the same three facts and added congratulations. Ithara sent a quieter acknowledgment through the new apprentice communication channel Kincaid had been added to. Soryn complained that his champion’s tailored reward was useful but required rebuilding three existing rooms.

Their friendly relationship had survived the competition without becoming an alliance against everyone else. Each still wanted a champion among the final dungeons. The approaching threat made their rivalry feel less absolute. If the Elder God needed several capable dungeons, another champion’s success might eventually protect the same universe.

Kincaid stored that conclusion under reasonable inference, not confirmed purpose.

He prepared the communication request and read the reward description one last time. This time, he had no reason to delay.
