Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The abandoned tannery had three occupied neighbors.

Lucian Voss learned that before deciding ona position from which to watch it.

A dye shop shared the eastern wall. Its rear yard remained active until sunset, when workers rinsed vats and hung dark lengths of cloth beneath a covered frame. A cooper’s warehouse occupied the building across the alley. The warehouse doors closed at dusk, but a night clerk checked the loading yard every hour. The third neighbor was a four-story residence whose upper windows overlooked the tannery roof.

The building he was supposed to watch was surrounded by busy citizens.

People crossed its rear alley without looking at the broken windows. A vegetable seller stored his handcart beneath one overhanging floor. Two dye workers smoked beside its blocked side door during their meal break. Children used the front step until an adult called them home.

Anyone watching from the same place for six hours would become part of the neighborhood.

Lucian walked the surrounding blocks in daylight.

The tannery’s front entrance opened onto a street of old workshops converted into cheap storage. The rear alley descended toward a canal service road. Roofs connected at uneven heights. Two legal bridges crossed between buildings, both locked after business hours. A third crossing consisted of planks laid from the residence to a warehouse roof without a permit sign.

Lucian marked no single observation point.

He marked five.

The first stood inside the upper floor of an unfinished lodging house. The owner allowed day laborers to sleep there for a small fee and did not ask whether a renter remained after dark. A missing shutter provided a view of the tannery’s front door and the intersection beyond it.

The second was the outer stair of a public bath. From its upper landing, Lucian could see the rear alley through the gaps between three laundry lines.

The cooper’s warehouse offered the best view and the greatest risk. Its slate roof overlooked the tannery yard. Reaching it required crossing a wall from the adjoining stable, and remaining there would leave no ordinary reason for Lucian to be found.

The fourth position sat at street level inside a late-night tea room.

The fifth moved.

A circular tram carried workers between the canal district and the old inner wall every twenty minutes. It crossed the tannery’s front street, continued behind the block, and returned along the canal. One complete circuit revealed both approaches without requiring Lucian to stop near either.

He purchased two tram tokens and a place in the unfinished lodging house. Before dusk, he ate, filled a water flask, and wrote the addresses of three public patrol stations in the district.

The locksmith’s instructions were limited.

Watch from dusk until second bell. Record every entrance, every person who watched the building, and every route someone could use to leave without entering the main street. Do not approach anyone. Do not enter the tannery.

Lucian intended to complete the work he had accepted, not improve it into a different job.

At dusk, he sat behind the lodging house’s missing shutter.

The street changed with the shift bells. Workshop doors closed. Food stalls opened beneath the awnings they used during the day. Residents returning home replaced carts delivering goods. Lamp tenders moved from post to post while the last natural light remained between the roofs.

The tannery’s front door stayed shut.

The first person entered through the rear.

Lucian saw him on the bath landing after changing positions. The man approached from the canal road carrying a covered basket. He passed the alley once, continued to the next intersection, and returned on the opposite side. At the tannery, he knocked twice against the frame of the blocked side door.

A lower panel opened.

The man handed his basket through it. The panel closed. He left without entering.

Lucian recorded his clothes, approximate height, route, and the time.

The second arrival came ten minutes later. This man entered through the front with a key.

The third and fourth arrived separately and used the same key within a minute of one another. One wore a freight clerk’s green coat without a visible company badge. The other carried a short club beneath his jacket and examined every upper window before crossing the street.

Lucian withdrew from the landing before the man’s gaze reached him.

He used the inside stair, exited through the bath’s lower entrance, and joined people leaving a nearby eating house. Broken Outline softened the moment when he crossed from one moving group to another. It did not change his face or clothing. The Skill helped other eyes lose the exact position they had begun following.

He took the next tram circuit.

From the front window, he saw a woman enter the tannery carrying a narrow ledger case. Two stops later, the tram passed the canal side and revealed a man standing beneath the rear arch.

The man watched the tannery.

He was not one of the arrivals Lucian had recorded. His coat remained open despite the cold, allowing him to move his hands without reaching through fabric. He paid attention to windows, roof edges, and people who slowed near the alley. When the tram passed, his eyes followed the passengers instead of the building.

Lucian remained seated through the next stop.

The watcher left the arch before the tram completed its circuit.

Lucian found him again near the lodging house.

He did not approach directly. Route Memory held the man’s previous position while Lucian used the tea room’s window to examine the street. A second watcher now stood beside a closed cobbler’s stall. The two men could see opposite approaches to Lucian’s first observation point.

They were searching for someone.

The man with the concealed club had looked at the windows before entering. The two outside had appeared afterward. Either the people operating from the tannery routinely checked for surveillance, or one arrival had noticed something during Lucian’s first hour.

Lucian reviewed his movements.

He had used the lodging-house door twice. Nobody followed him inside. The bath landing could be seen from one upper tannery window. He had withdrawn before the club man’s gaze settled, but the movement of a pale shirt behind the laundry might have been enough to justify checking.

The reason mattered less than the response.

He left the tea room through its front door with three customers and walked toward the market. One of the watchers followed after half a block.

Lucian did not accelerate.

He stopped at a food stall, compared two posted ferry schedules, and entered a public passage beneath an apartment block. The follower remained far enough behind to pretend he wanted the same route.

Route Memory supplied every turn Lucian had walked that afternoon.

The public passage opened into a lamp market. Lucian crossed between stalls, descended a stair beside a glass workshop, and used Quiet Step when the crowd thinned inside the next covered lane. He reached the end before his follower entered it.

Broken Outline carried him across the opening behind a delivery wagon.

Instead of continuing away, Lucian turned through a narrow service court and climbed the outer stair of a closed bookbinder. The route returned him to a bridge above the lane. He watched the follower emerge, scan the road, and choose the market.

The man was not trying to rob him. He did not call allies or rush after the person he had lost. He made a careful circuit of every plausible exit, studying faces.

Lucian recorded him as a counter-watcher.

He waited until the man moved two streets away, then approached the tannery from the canal side.

The cooper’s roof remained too exposed. The night clerk had completed his first yard check, and another would come within an hour. Lucian used the unfinished planks connecting the residence to a neighboring storehouse instead.

They flexed beneath his weight.

Quiet Step could not prevent loose wood from moving. He crossed close to the supporting wall, placed each foot above a beam, and stopped whenever voices rose from an open residence window. The far roof had a raised stone edge that concealed him from the tannery yard while leaving a narrow view through a drainage gap.

Light now escaped around the tannery’s rear door.

Six people occupied the yard.

Two unloaded small crates from a handcart. The cart had entered through the front street without stopping at the building. A driver continued past the block while one worker opened a side gate and the others carried the crates through it. The route allowed goods to arrive without a cart remaining outside the tannery.

Lucian recorded the driver’s appearance and cart mark.

The ledger woman stood inside the doorway, checking each crate against a page. The freight clerk removed his green coat and placed it over a chair. Beneath it, his shirt carried a stitched emblem Lucian had seen scratched out on two warehouse notices near the canal.

The building belonged to a gang.

Lucian did not need to identify the emblem to finish his contract. He copied its shape.

The club man emerged next.

He spoke to one of the yard workers, pointed toward the upper roofs, and sent him into the alley.

Lucian lowered himself behind the stone edge.

Boots climbed the residence stair below him. A door opened. Someone asked a tenant whether strangers had entered the roof. The tenant denied seeing anyone. The boots continued upward.

Lucian had selected two exits from the position before using it.

The planks were the obvious one. The second required crossing the slope behind the roof ridge, stepping onto a narrow maintenance ledge, and descending a rain chain to the dye shop’s covered frame.

He chose the second.

The rain chain shifted when his weight reached it. Lucian held still until the metal stopped tapping against the wall. Voices remained above. He descended into rows of dark cloth that still dripped from the evening rinse.

The dye workers had locked the yard, but the rear gate used a simple wooden bar. Lucian lifted it, stepped into the alley, and replaced it from the outside through a gap beside the hinge.

The roof searcher reached the stone edge moments later.

Lucian watched him from beneath the bath’s stairs.

The man examined the drainage gap, found the faint dust disturbed by Lucian’s sleeve, and looked down toward the dye yard. He had no proof of who had used the roof or whether the trace came from that night. He stayed there for twelve minutes before returning to the tannery.

Lucian changed positions again.

The gang did not stop operating. Another five people arrived before first bell. Three used the front key. One delivered a message through the rear panel. The last entered from a cellar passage that opened beneath the canal walk.

Lucian found that route only because he saw the man disappear.

The canal wall appeared continuous from across the water. From the tram, Lucian noticed a recessed drainage arch behind a row of moored maintenance skiffs. The man stepped between two boats and did not emerge along the walk. Eight minutes later, the tannery’s yard door opened and he joined the ledger woman.

Lucian added the concealed cellar route to his report.

At first bell, the counter-watchers changed.

The two original men entered the tannery. A younger watcher took the canal arch while another walked the surrounding block without stopping. Lucian recorded the transfer and stayed on the tram for a complete circuit. Nobody followed when he disembarked in the market.

The final hour brought departures.

Three gang members left through the front in ordinary work clothes. Two used the cellar route. The ledger woman carried her case to a covered carriage waiting a street away. The handcart returned for four smaller crates and departed under a different driver.

The club man remained inside when second bell sounded.

Lucian ended the watch.

Following any departure might have produced more information. It would also have taken him beyond the time, location, and limits he had accepted. He returned to his rented space, expanded every short note while the routes remained fresh, and slept for four hours.

The locksmith’s shop opened at midmorning.

The older man behind the counter accepted the bronze disk and Lucian’s written report. He read the entrance record first, then unfolded the route map.

”You marked two sets of watchers.” He said.

”The first pair searched the surrounding buildings. Their replacements watched the approaches. I believe both worked for the people inside.”

”And this route?”

Lucian indicated the canal wall. ”Cellar access behind the maintenance skiffs. I saw one person disappear there and join the rear yard eight minutes later. Two left by the same route after first bell. I did not enter it.”

The older man turned to the description of the roof search.

”How close did they come to identifying you?”

”The roof searcher found disturbed dust after I moved. One counter-watcher later followed me from the tea room. I lost him in the lamp market, but he saw my clothes and may remember my face from a distance.”

Lucian did not improve the answer to protect his chances of another job.

The man compared the gang emblem to a separate page beneath his counter.

”The client believed this group had taken over the tannery. Your report confirms it.”

”Who is the client?”

”Another organization competing for the same streets. You were hired to collect information, not join either dispute.”

The answer established that a rival gang had paid for the watch. It did not identify which gang or what it intended to do with the routes Lucian found.

The older man counted the full payment onto the counter.

”The client may request follow-up work after reviewing this. I have another contract that does not depend upon that decision. A courier is losing sealed parcels between two district offices. Map his next route and determine where the chain of custody breaks. Do not recover anything.”

He placed a second bronze disk beside the coins.

Lucian read the address and payment before accepting it.

He left the report with the locksmith, deposited most of his earnings, and spent the afternoon walking the courier route and committing it to his memory before the next contract began.
