Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Five Knots returned to Ironcloud with a damaged stern, an incomplete delivery record, and enough stolen equipment to repair The Sixth Knot twice.

They did not carry the equipment through the public dock office.

Dorran Stonewake met them at a private maintenance berth after receiving Tessa’s message. He examined the mismatched rail, listened to the account of the first attack, and waited until the berth doors closed before Five Knots described the second ship.

”You boarded it?” Dorran asked.

”It belonged to Helmar’s people.” Belda said.

”That was not my question.”

”Yes.”

Dorran rubbed one hand over his beard. ”And where is it now?”

”At the bottom of a ravine.” Tessa replied.

They showed him the slaver records.

His anger shifted direction.

Dorran did not congratulate them. He did arrange for the unmarked equipment to enter his workshop without being added to The Sixth Knot’s public cargo declaration. He warned them that Helmar would accuse them if he learned what happened, whether or not he possessed evidence.

”Let him.” Orin said.

”Confidence is not proof against inconvenience.” Dorran replied. ”Keep your account consistent. You were attacked, driven off course, made repairs, and returned. Everything else goes only to people you trust.”

Rod’s party and Renn arrived after dark.

Kesh spread the captured documents across a worktable beside the archive copies. Most concerned the slaver operation or ordinary shipments conducted through shell companies. Renn separated those from anything connected to excavation, old properties, or specialized equipment.

One manifest listed replacement ward plates made to specifications no longer used in Ironcloud. Another described ventilation assemblies sized for deep enclosed structures. A third recorded delivery of compact lifting equipment, preserved food, and control crystals to a company that owned no registered mine.

The company name appeared in Darron’s old ledgers.

”Ash Ridge Consolidated.” Renn said.

The original company had dissolved decades ago. Helmar’s faction continued using its routing code long after its legal death.

Dirk placed an archive map beside the manifest. ”Can the route charge narrow the destination?”

Kesh examined the figures. ”It matches the same eastern distance band. This flight included a mountain-access surcharge.”

”Which means?”

”The destination lacked a maintained dock or required a difficult approach.”

Renn returned to the archive the next morning with the new company codes. The clerk found three related property transfers that had seemed irrelevant without them.

All pointed toward an old Ruskell holding called Blackwater Reach.

The property occupied a remote section of mountains east of Ironcloud. Public records described an exhausted silver mine, several worker buildings, and a small landing platform. The mine closed more than a century ago. Ownership passed through two shell companies before returning to a Ruskell trust with no active beneficiaries.

”Why hide an exhausted mine?” Nessa asked.

”Perhaps it was never exhausted.” Dain said.

The archive clerk produced a survey from before the closure. The known shafts did not justify the later purchases of ventilation equipment. Construction accounts referenced reinforced doors that did not appear anywhere on the public plans. A payment to Dorrik and Sons matched the year the ring was commissioned.

The final connection came from the papers Five Knots took from the slaver ship.

A coded letter instructed one of Helmar’s agents to divert spare airship components toward a staging depot west of Blackwater Reach. The letter did not mention the property or the key. It did refer to an operation Helmar expected to begin once ”the inheritance obstruction” was recovered.

Renn read the phrase without expression.

”He meant the ring.” Rod said.

”Or me.” Renn replied. ”Possibly both.”

No record explained what waited beneath Blackwater Reach. It might be a sealed vault, an abandoned fortress, a hidden workshop, or something built below the old mine. The ring’s design proved only that it operated a fitted mechanism. Helmar’s years of preparation proved he valued what lay beyond it enough to kill his family.

Renn marked the property on Kesh’s map.

”We go there.” He said.

”Not immediately.” Lana answered.

The table fell silent.

”Helmar knows the location or has narrowed it as far as we have.” She continued. ”He will watch every practical route. He may already have people at the property.”

”Waiting in Ironcloud gives him more time.” Renn said.

”Walking into his preparations gives him the ring.”

Rod agreed with Lana. They needed current information before chartering a ship or approaching by land. A full expedition would attract notice. Sending one of their own risked revealing the entire party if Helmar’s watchers recognized them.

Dirk was the best tracker among them, but wilderness tracking and entering a watched property unseen were different tasks. Midnight could examine parts of the site, yet the familiar could not travel hundreds of miles alone or report while separated from Lana.

Dorran knew pilots, guards, and salvage crews. None were professional infiltrators. The Ruskell branches offered names, but every recommendation carried a possible family connection.

”Helmar has spent years putting people into companies around Ironcloud.” Renn said. ”Anyone suggested by a Ruskell could already belong to him.”

Rod studied the marked property.

They needed someone capable of reaching Blackwater Reach, observing the approaches, identifying guards and wards, and returning without alerting anyone. More importantly, they needed someone Helmar would never think to associate with Renn.

”We need a professional scout.” Rod said.

Renn nodded. ”One with no connection to my family.”

They spent the following day testing whether that requirement could be met locally.

Dorran offered the name of an aerial surveyor who had mapped abandoned mines. The dwarf was qualified, but his company had once carried Ruskell freight. Darron recommended a former household ranger. Renn rejected him before the description ended. Ironcloud security maintained licensed investigators, yet hiring one through official channels would place the destination in a public contract register.

Every obvious choice created a trail Helmar could follow.

”Then we look outside Ironcloud.” Rod said.

”That takes time.” Renn replied.

”Less time than recovering the ring after we hand it to an ambush.”

Lana agreed to use underworld contacts only if they could verify the scout independently. None of them knew a suitable organization by name, but Caldris and other large cities supported people who specialized in entering places where they were not invited. The difficulty would be reaching such a person without announcing why they were needed.

Renn locked the ring inside a protected box for the night rather than wearing it. The box would not stop Helmar forever. It would prevent a servant or paid visitor from removing the key during a moment of distraction.

On the map, Blackwater Reach appeared as a small mark surrounded by empty mountains.

The empty space concerned Rod most. An enemy could watch the few approaches from miles away. An airship would be visible. A land party would take weeks and depend upon roads Helmar already knew.

They did not need another fighter.

They needed someone who understood how to be absent even while standing inside an enemy’s defenses.

Dain suggested approaching the property with a larger force once the scout returned. Rod refused to decide that question in advance. If Blackwater Reach contained only watchers, a small group might enter unnoticed. If Helmar had fortified it, even a large adventuring party could be trapped between prepared defenses and an airship force.

”Information first.” Rod said.

Renn looked at the ring box. ”And if the scout decides the key is worth more than the contract?”

”Then we hire someone whose organization depends on reputation.” Lana said. ”Not a stranger in a tavern.”

That created a new problem. Reputable covert organizations did not advertise to outsiders. Finding one would require a trusted intermediary, and every intermediary in Ironcloud belonged to a network Helmar might have reached.

Nessa proposed asking the Sanctuary. It connected people from countries far beyond dwarven territory and employed security capable of investigating threats without relying on Ruskell contacts. Rod considered the idea but did not know whether its officials would locate a private scout for a family dispute.

”We can ask without telling them where the property is.” He said.

Renn agreed. The first inquiry would describe the needed abilities and the requirement for no dwarven-family connection. Only a verified candidate would learn about Blackwater Reach.

They sealed the archive copies, Five Knots’ documents, and route map in separate containers. If one disappeared, the others would preserve enough information to continue.

For the first time since arriving in Ironcloud, Renn felt they were choosing the next move instead of reacting to Helmar’s.

The feeling lasted until an archive clerk delivered another sealed notice.

Someone had requested the complete public survey of Blackwater Reach that morning.

The buyer used a different mineral company from the broker monitoring Renn’s filings. The timing could not be coincidence. Either Helmar’s people had seen the same links in the records or their compromised branch relative had reported enough for him to act.

Ironcloud could tell Renn who purchased a public document. It could not stop the purchase.

Rod asked whether the survey showed the route they planned to take.

”It shows every route anyone would plan to take.” Kesh said. ”The landing platform, the old mine road, and two weather shelters.”

”Then Helmar can cover all three.”

”If he has enough people.”

Renn requested a copy of the same survey. The property sat along a broken ridge with one broad air approach. Old ventilation shafts reached the surface on the south slope, though the plans marked them collapsed. A seasonal stream had cut a narrow ravine behind the mine buildings.

Every possible hidden route required someone on the ground to verify it.

The party debated whether to send Five Knots on a distant pass to observe from the air. Tessa refused for the right reason: The Sixth Knot was known to Helmar now. Its appearance near Blackwater Reach would warn everyone below before Kesh could map the first guard post.

”We can carry the scout close.” Tessa said. ”We cannot be the scout.”

Dorran offered to register a false cargo route if they eventually needed it. He would not do so before a trustworthy operative was found. False records created legal risk for his business and would become useless if filed too early.

Renn understood. Everyone helping him was accepting danger that began with his family.

He offered Dorran payment from the limited inheritance funds Ironcloud had confirmed.

Dorran refused. ”Five Knots flies contracted routes for me. Someone attacked my sponsored ship. Helping establish why is my business.”

That did not make him a Ruskell ally. It made Helmar’s attempt at intimidation another failure.

Rod sent the first carefully worded inquiry into the Sanctuary that evening. It named no property, no key, and no Ruskell. It asked for a scout experienced with remote fortified sites, covert observation, and ward detection. The candidate had to come from outside Ironcloud’s dwarven networks and accept background verification before learning the destination.
