Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Lucian activated Stealth before he crossed the final stretch of open ground.

The concealed watcher had turned toward the airship. Yard guards were occupied with the arriving cargo, and the engine’s low roar covered the scrape of Lucian’s boots against stone. He reached the drain channel, stepped through the gap between the runic markers, and climbed.

The wall offered narrow seams rather than proper handholds. He moved without haste. A rushed grip failed more loudly than a careful one.

Dust drifted from the open window above. The cleaner had left it propped with a wooden block while he swept the adjoining room. Lucian waited below the sill until the broom strokes moved away, then pulled himself inside.

He entered a supply room containing folded cloth, seal wax, empty document boxes, and shelves of cleaning materials. The cleaner’s cart stood in the corridor. Lucian passed it before the man returned.

The administrative building was quieter than its visible activity suggested. Thick doors separated the offices, and runners carried sealed packets rather than shouting messages between rooms. Lucian moved with the shift change. When a clerk entered the hall, he followed within the man’s blind side. When two guards approached from opposite directions, he stepped into an empty copying room and waited.

He knew the building’s exterior shape. The rooms that mattered were likely to face the mine or the records annex.

The first useful office held daily supply sheets. Lucian closed the door without latching it and read by the lamp left burning on the desk.

The listed workforce nearly matched the visible population. Food totals did not.

Several entries described lower crews by numbers instead of names. Their meals, water, lamp oil, restraints, and medical supplies were recorded as mine expenses. The clerk who prepared the summaries had separated them from ordinary wages. No payment line existed for those workers.

Lucian copied the totals and dates into a thin notebook.

He returned each page to its exact position. A loose corner had been folded beneath one ledger. He folded it again. A pinch of black grit marked the top of another stack. He disturbed neither it nor the string laid across a locked drawer.

The next room contained shift assignments. The upper mine used names. The lower levels used numbers and guard rotations.

Lucian found the first slave transfer six months earlier. Fourteen people entered Lower Work Area Three. Three weeks later, replacement rations for twelve were canceled. No release, transfer, death, or burial record explained the missing two.

The pattern continued.

Groups entered Lower Work Areas Four through Nine. Supplies went down. Guards rotated out. Slaves did not.

Some numbers vanished from later counts. Others remained for months. None returned to the surface workforce.

Lucian copied representative entries rather than every name and total. Rod’s party needed proof of the pattern, not a second version of an entire archive.

A key turned in the outer office.

Lucian closed the ledger and moved behind the door before it opened.

A gray-haired clerk entered carrying a stack of forms. He crossed to the desk, examined the ledger without opening it, and placed the forms beneath a stone weight. Lucian remained still enough to hear the man breathe.

The clerk collected a packet from a locked cabinet and left.

Lucian waited until the footsteps faded. He did not congratulate himself or reconsider his ability. A person entering an office was an ordinary part of infiltrating an occupied building.

He moved on.

The records annex connected through a covered passage. Two guards occupied its far end. Lucian could have crossed behind a clerk, but the annex door required a token pressed against a plate. He did not know whether the ward recorded each token or merely confirmed authorization.

Forcing the issue offered little value while accessible offices still held records.

He descended one floor instead.

The lower administration rooms handled deliveries. Wall boards listed incoming wagons, airship cargo, and underground transport. A large map of the mine occupied the supervisor’s office.

The oldest tunnels matched Renn’s archive map. Newer passages descended beneath them in steep, angular sections. Several ended at numbered work areas whose shapes had been drawn without interior detail. Lower Work Area Nine sat beyond the deepest surveyed mine shown in the family records.

A broad blank region surrounded it.

The map showed ventilation shafts, supply lifts, guard stations, and three sealed cross passages. It did not identify what the slaves did below. Notes beside the lowest route concerned timber reinforcement, water pumps, and stone removal. One repeated order instructed supervisors not to expand toward the eastern water noise.

Lucian copied the mine layout onto prepared sheets.

The lower route mattered. So did the limits of what he knew. He marked uncertain distances differently from confirmed ones and copied the blank region as blank.

Outside, chains scraped across stone.

Lucian moved to the dark side of the window.

Twelve slaves crossed the yard beneath guard. Their wrists were linked in pairs. Most wore rough work clothes. One limped badly enough that the dwarf chained beside him supported part of his weight. The guards hurried them into the mine structure before the airship unloading crew returned.

The outer doors closed behind them.

Lucian checked the delivery board. The group had arrived in the second wagon he observed. Its entry listed twelve units of contracted labor. No names appeared.

He copied the line.

He could descend through the mine entrance. The night shift gave him darkness, and the map provided part of the route. It also showed at least six guard stations, multiple token plates, and miles of unknown passages. If he disappeared below, Rod’s party might receive nothing he had already learned.

The slaves were evidence of a larger operation. They were not permission to abandon judgment.

Lucian completed his search of the supervisor’s desk and found shipping orders for ore, machine parts, and food. Several orders bore symbols Lana had identified as Helmar’s allied companies. None explained the lower work.

He began his exit before midnight.

The cleaner had closed the cliffside window. Lucian did not attempt to reopen it from a corridor where the movement could be noticed outside. His preparations included more than one route.

The delivery office connected to a loading bay. Every night, sealed waste bins were moved through the eastern entrance and loaded onto a cart. Lucian waited inside the bay until workers opened the door. He crossed beside the cart through the wider gap intended for its wheels.

The ward lines brightened around the authorized workers. None changed around Lucian. Their overlap stopped short of the cart lane exactly as he had recorded.

He reached the shadow behind the records annex and climbed to the roof before releasing Stealth.

The compound continued operating below. No bell rang. No patrol changed direction. Clerks remained at their desks.

Lucian crossed the roofs during the loudest portion of the night shift and descended beyond the northern boundary. He returned to his observation point with copied maps and records secured beneath his clothing.

He remained there for another day.

Leaving immediately after an infiltration could be as revealing as entering badly. He needed to confirm that no one had discovered disturbed papers, unexpected ward activity, or a missing document. Patrols followed their previous routes. The clerks entered and left at normal times. The cleaner opened the same window the following evening.

No one knew Blackwater Reach had been examined.

Near noon on the second day, three airships appeared above the western ridge.

The lead vessel carried Ruskell colors. The two behind it were troop transports.

They descended one after another. Warriors filled the landing shelf before the first vessel finished unloading. Officers shouted assignments while workers rolled crates down the ramps. More ships followed within the hour.

Lucian counted until the number of arriving soldiers passed three hundred.

This was not a patrol reinforcement. Servants carried furniture into the original residence overlooking the river. Engineers moved surveying equipment toward the workshops. A wagon bearing household records followed a group of armored guards. The arriving force brought enough supplies to remain.

Helmar Ruskell descended from the lead vessel late in the afternoon.

Lucian recognized the family profile, the dark beard, and the articulated metal hand shown in Lana’s notes. Helmar paused at the edge of the shelf while an officer reported to him. He did not search the ridges or order the compound sealed. He examined the buildings with the expression of a man judging property that already belonged to him.

Workers raised a larger Ruskell banner over the residence.

Helmar had not come because someone discovered Lucian. He had come to make Blackwater Reach his seat of power.

That decision changed the assignment. Every patrol schedule Lucian recorded would be revised as the new soldiers settled in. The ward positions, approaches, mine entrances, and fixed structures would remain useful. Another week of observation might provide updated numbers, but it would also keep Lucian near a compound receiving new scouts, animals, and officers.

Rod had instructed him to withdraw if Helmar’s arrival increased the chance of discovery. It did.

Lucian waited until night concealed the northern slope. He left the observation cleft without descending toward the compound again.

Behind him, torchlight multiplied across Blackwater Reach. Soldiers occupied the concealed posts and began building two more. The property missing from modern maps was no longer a quiet outpost Helmar visited through intermediaries.

It had become the center of his operation.

Lucian crossed the ridge before dawn carrying proof of what went below.

He did not use the same ledge he had crossed on the approach. The new arrivals had already sent a pair of scouts toward the northern heights, and torchlight moved beneath the broken path. Lucian descended into a narrow ravine, followed it west until water covered the stone, and climbed out beyond the view of the compound.

At midday he stopped beneath an overhang and compared his copies against memory. He corrected one stair count, added the location of a locked records door, and marked the slave-transfer dates he had not had time to copy in full. The original papers remained exactly where their clerks expected to find them. These pages were the only sign the search had occurred.

Helmar’s arrival reduced the value of the old patrol times, but it increased the value of everything else. The fixed ward stones could not be moved quickly. The mine passages could not be redrawn. The slaves and the lower work areas proved that Blackwater Reach concealed more than an inherited estate.

Lucian sealed the copies against rain and continued toward Ironcloud. He kept his pace steady despite the distance behind him. Urgency was useful only when it did not create a trail.
