Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Lucian had completed three contracts since he became a full member before the request from Ironcloud reached him.

The first required entering a moneylender’s office and copying the names concealed inside a false ledger. The second placed him inside a nobleman’s townhouse long enough to replace one sealed letter with another. The third never required him to cross a locked door. He followed a warehouse supervisor for four days and identified the tavern where the man sold information about incoming cargo.

None of the targets learned Lucian had been there.

That mattered more to the Hidden Ledger than a dramatic escape.

When Lucian entered the organization’s Caldris hideout, the contract keeper no longer directed him toward the lowest board. He was permitted through the second door without a sponsor and greeted by name at the records counter.

His reputation remained modest. The Hidden Ledger contained infiltrators with decades of experience, smugglers who knew every unregistered route through Caldris, and thieves capable of entering places Lucian had not yet learned existed. Within his own rank, however, clients had begun requesting the quiet human who returned with complete reports and no alarm attached to them.

One contract keeper had begun using his reports as examples for newer members. Lucian learned that only because a probationary runner complained that no ordinary person recorded window latches, servant rotations, and unused exits with that much precision. Harlon never praised Lucian in response. He told the runner to become more observant.

The attention pleased Lucian less than he expected. A good reputation brought better work, but it also created expectations. If every contract placed him in another Caldris estate, he would become exceptionally skilled at one environment while remaining untested everywhere else.

Urban infiltration had become his specialty.

Lucian did not want it to become his limit.

The contract keeper arrived carrying a narrow wooden case. Harlon was a middle-aged goblin with a scar through one ear and a habit of reading an entire page before acknowledging anyone waiting for him.

He placed the case on the desk.

”Your last client paid the completion bonus.” He said. ”They also requested your availability next month.”

”Another townhouse?”

”An office above a counting house.”

Lucian looked past him toward the contracts arranged along the back wall. ”I want something outside the city.”

Harlon stopped opening the case.

”Why?”

”Because I know how to cross Caldris without being remembered. I know how to enter an occupied building and leave it unchanged. I do not know whether I can do the same thing where there are no crowds, alleys, or neighboring roofs.”

”You want to risk a good reputation to discover which mistakes you make in mud?”

”I want to discover them before someone hires me for work where those mistakes matter.”

The goblin considered the answer.

Lucian had expanded his abilities since joining the Hidden Ledger. The most important was Stealth. When properly maintained, the skill blurred more than the outline of his body. Light bent around him until he became nearly invisible to ordinary sight.

Stealth did not remove sound, scent, tracks, displaced dust, or the pressure of a foot upon a weak board. Lucian’s successful contracts depended upon remembering that. He used the skill as one part of infiltration, not as permission to walk through occupied rooms carelessly.

He had first unlocked it through a Sanctuary trainer after earning enough from Hidden Ledger assignments to justify the lesson and practice time. The trainer had not given him instant mastery. The lesson allowed his system to recognize what he was attempting and track his progress while Lucian learned to hold the effect through movement.

At first, Stealth failed whenever he changed pace. Later, it broke only during sudden movements. By his most recent contract, he crossed a lit hallway while two guards stood at opposite ends and neither saw more than a brief distortion near the wall.

Lucian still chose an unused service stair on his way out. A skill that made a dangerous route possible did not make it preferable.

The jobs had also taught him when not to use it. A visible servant carrying the correct crate attracted less suspicion than an unexplained distortion crossing a guarded courtyard. Invisibility expanded his choices; it did not replace judgment.

Harlon brought him three assignments.

The first involved following a caravan suspected of moving stolen weapons between villages. Lucian rejected it after learning the client expected him to sabotage the wagons if the accusation proved true. He could follow the route. Destroying guarded cargo alone belonged to someone else.

The second required entering a forest claimed by territorial fey and recovering a body. Lucian lacked the knowledge to negotiate with the inhabitants or determine which plants would react to him.

The third came from Ironcloud.

That alone made it unlike anything he had completed. Every earlier assignment remained within Caldris or its immediate districts, where a failed route could be replaced by another street. Blackwater Reach offered no such abundance.

Harlon gave him a single page.

”Remote property.” Lucian read. ”Mountain valley. Controlled by hostile personnel. Observe approaches, patrols, wards, supply routes, and outer structures. Entry permitted only if undetected.”

”The client specifically requested someone without ties to Ironcloud or the Ruskell family.”

”Do I have either?” Lucian didn’t know if one of the people he regularly contacted was in touch with the Ruskells.

”Not according to anything we know.”

The page identified the location as Blackwater Reach. It warned that Helmar Ruskell’s people controlled and watched the property, although their numbers and defenses were unknown. The contract did not explain why the client cared.

Lucian did not ask.

”Who receives the report?”

”The client will meet you in Ironcloud. Their identity is withheld until you accept travel and the local branch confirms the arrangement. You may withdraw after the meeting if they change the scope.”

”How isolated?”

”The old route ends roughly twelve miles from the nearest occupied settlement. The property itself extends through a river valley. Current maps disagree about the boundaries.”

”Known wards?”

”Unknown. The client believes specialized locks and ward housings were delivered during construction.”

”That could mean anything from a sealed warehouse to a fortified compound.”

”Yes. They don’t need a full-blown infiltration. What they want is someone that can go take a look without being discovered and bring back intel.”

Lucian studied the page again. It combined the work he understood with conditions he did not. Reaching a building without city cover would require new habits. Observing patrols in open terrain meant managing tracks, weather, food, sleep, and distance. If he entered, there would be no crowd beyond the door to conceal his departure.

It was exactly the kind of contract he requested.

”I will meet the client.”

Harlon opened the wooden case. Inside rested the first half of Lucian’s travel advance and an identification cylinder recognized by the Hidden Ledger’s Ironcloud intermediary.

”The meeting does not bind you.” He said. ”Neither does accepting coin for travel. If the client concealed a danger relevant to your work, leave.”

”And if the family story is unpleasant but irrelevant?”

”Then do what they pay you to do.”

Lucian spent two days preparing.

He did not simply purchase heavier boots and declare himself a wilderness scout. He visited a guide who trained Ledger couriers to cross unsettled country. The guide examined his equipment and removed half of it.

Bright metal fittings were replaced. Caldris clothing that shed city rain poorly was exchanged for layered wool and treated leather. Lucian learned how to wrap food so its scent traveled less, how to place a camp where smoke would not collect against a ridge, and how to test ground that might retain a recognizable print.

His Route Memory would remain useful. So would Broken Outline, Quiet Step, and Stealth. The difference lay in what surrounded him. A stone corridor changed slowly. A trail could be altered by rain, animals, falling branches, or someone deliberately doubling back.

He purchased a compact climbing line, field glasses, waxed map cloth, and a small tool for taking impressions of unfamiliar locks. He left behind equipment intended for crowded rooftops and narrow interior gaps.

The guide took him beyond Caldris’s outer districts for practical instruction. Lucian learned how far voices carried across a quiet valley and how easily a cooking smell traveled downslope after sunset. He practiced choosing stone surfaces where his boots left little sign, then discovered that stepping only on obvious rocks created a trail of disturbed dust a tracker could follow.

”People who belong outdoors do not move like they are avoiding the ground.” The guide told him. ”The more unnatural your path looks, the more interesting it becomes.”

Lucian repeated the exercise until his route resembled ordinary passage rather than a puzzle assembled from clean stones.

He also learned to leave a position without exposing where he had watched from. A crushed patch of grass, a snapped branch at eye height, or water poured carelessly onto dry soil could reveal hours of observation after the observer was gone.

At the skill trainer, Lucian began working toward ’Trail Veil’, an ability that reduced the clarity of signs left during wilderness travel. It did not erase a path. It made individual traces less likely to stand out from ordinary disturbances.

He did not unlock mastery in an afternoon. The lesson gave his system enough understanding to begin tracking progress, and he practiced during the journey whenever the route allowed it.

Lucian left Caldris with a commercial caravan traveling toward the nearest portal connection. From there he crossed Corathen and joined an overland route toward Ironcloud.

He did not treat the travel as empty time.

He observed how wagon guards chose camps, how scouts tested narrow roads, and how experienced travelers noticed disturbed stones without stopping to examine every one. He practiced Stealth at the edge of evening camps, careful not to alarm anyone. He attempted to cross soft ground without leaving an obvious path and checked his work afterward.

At one camp, the caravan’s lead scout found Lucian’s practice trail within minutes. He followed it to the stream, lost it on the stones, and recovered it where Lucian stepped over a thorn bush instead of passing through the gap used by animals.

Lucian asked how he found the second section.

”You avoided the easy path.” The scout said. ”Someone hiding always thinks difficulty looks natural.”

The lesson stayed with him longer than a compliment would have.

The first attempts were poor.

By the time the mountains surrounding Ironcloud appeared, Lucian no longer moved through wilderness as though it were a city missing its buildings.

He still was not a master of it. The distinction was why he had come.

Ironcloud would determine whether the contract justified the risk. Lucian intended to judge that for himself.
