Dungeon Master (Karma System)

A courier carried six sealed parcels when he left the northern district office.

Lucian saw each one entered into the chain record.

He stood across the street beneath the awning of a public notice house, reading the same posted work orders for the third time. The courier’s leather case rested open on the counter inside the office. A clerk checked six seal numbers, wrote them into the route book, and closed the case with a brass lock.

The route crossed three districts of Caldris.

The first office gathered parcels from courts, trade houses, and municipal departments. The second sorted them by destination. The third transferred outgoing deliveries to neighborhood couriers. Three sealed packets had disappeared somewhere between the first record and the final handoff during the previous month.

The courier had carried all three.

That made him the easiest person to blame. It did not make him responsible.

Lucian followed when the man entered the street.

The courier used the same route Lucian had walked the previous afternoon. He crossed a tram square, took the western pedestrian bridge, and continued beneath the old inner wall. He did not enter a tavern, meet anyone, or leave the case unattended. At each crowded intersection, he kept one hand against the lock.

Lucian changed positions without hiding every movement. A person could follow a courier openly for half a mile if he looked like another citizen traveling in the same direction. Concealment mattered when the route narrowed.

Quiet Step removed the sound of his boots beneath the wall passage. Broken Outline helped him leave one group of pedestrians and join another before the courier looked back. Route Memory held every turn without requiring Lucian to consult the map in his pocket.

The second district office occupied the ground floor of a converted counting house.

The courier entered through the public delivery door. Lucian continued past it and took a seat at a document stall across the square. The stall sold copied maps and standard forms. Its polished metal display gave him a distorted reflection of the office windows while he appeared to compare two street plans.

Inside, the courier placed his locked case on the transfer counter.

A gray-coated clerk checked the brass seal, opened the case, and counted six parcels. He signed the courier’s route sheet. The courier left with an empty case four minutes later.

Lucian marked the first chain break.

The original carrier no longer possessed the missing parcels after that signature. If a parcel vanished later, the record should not fall on him.

The gray-coated clerk moved the six packets to a sorting bench behind the counter. Five entered divided trays. The sixth remained beneath his left hand.

It was narrow, wrapped in dark paper, and sealed with blue wax.

The clerk checked the room.

Lucian lowered the street map and studied a list of canal permits until the man’s face disappeared from the reflection.

When he looked again, the sixth parcel was gone.

The clerk had not crossed to any sorting tray.

Lucian paid for the map and walked toward the side street. The building plan he memorized earlier showed a narrow service channel behind the transfer counter. Offices used it to send rejected documents to the lower records room without carrying them through the public hall.

A metal flap opened near the base of the outer wall.

No parcel emerged. The chute continued below the pavement.

Lucian reached the alley behind the office as a young man in a brown work coat exited a cellar stair. One side pocket sagged around a narrow rectangular shape.

The runner did not hurry.

He crossed the alley, paused beside a fountain, and tied one boot. While bent, he examined the street behind him through the water collected in the lower basin.

Lucian had stopped before entering the alley. He used Route Memory to take a parallel lane and reached the next intersection ahead of the runner.

The brown coat appeared among a group of laborers walking south.

Lucian followed from across the road.

The runner’s first turn carried him away from every direct route to the third courier office. His second returned him toward it. At the third intersection, he entered a crowded produce arcade and removed the brown coat while passing behind a canvas stall.

He emerged in a pale shirt with the parcel tucked against his back beneath a belt.

Lucian recognized him by the uneven wear on his left boot.

The runner stopped at a public well. He allowed three people to pass, then turned and walked against the flow he had been using.

This was not an ordinary delivery.

Lucian let the man pass within twenty feet without looking at him. Broken Outline softened the connection between the dark-haired scout beside the vegetable stalls and the same figure who appeared moments later beneath a freight awning. The Skill did not make him invisible. It made the runner’s memory work harder to hold his exact place.

The runner tested it.

He entered a spice shop through the front and left through a side door. Lucian did not follow inside. Route Memory showed where the side lane met the canal stairs. He reached that intersection by crossing a public courtyard.

The runner appeared below him.

For the first time, the man moved quickly.

He descended two flights, crossed beneath the canal bridge, and climbed the opposite embankment. Lucian followed far enough behind that the water concealed his steps. At the top, the runner looked back and saw no one on the stair.

Lucian was already beneath the bridge.

Quiet Step carried him along the narrow maintenance ledge above the water. He moved with one hand against the stone until an opening in the parapet allowed him to see the road.

The runner waited beside a closed tea warehouse.

He watched the bridge for nearly a minute. Then he entered the warehouse yard through an unlocked gate.

Lucian did not follow through the gate.

The contract required him to identify where the chain broke and trace the parcel’s route. It did not authorize entry into private property, contact with the runner, or recovery of anything stolen. He moved around the block and found a roofline visible from a public stair.

The warehouse yard appeared empty.

The runner had changed direction again. Route Memory returned Lucian to a detail he noticed during his first survey: a narrow passage joined the warehouse yard to a row of old stone storage arches beneath the road.

He reached the far end before the runner emerged.

The man no longer carried the parcel beneath his belt.

Lucian remained in the shadow of a crowded tram platform while the runner took one complete circuit of the square. He checked faces, paused near both exits, and finally headed back toward the courier district.

The parcel remained somewhere among the storage arches.

Lucian waited until the runner disappeared.

He then approached along the public walkway without entering any locked space. Twelve arches lined the retaining wall. Ten held merchant storage with painted company marks. One had been bricked closed. The last contained a municipal drain protected by an iron grate.

Fresh dust marked the lower corner of the bricked arch.

One stone had been removed and replaced recently. A narrow strip of blue wax clung to its edge.

Lucian recorded the exact position.

He did not move the stone.

The missing parcel had traveled from the gray-coated clerk’s hand, through the service chute, to the runner, and into a prepared dead drop. Recovering it might alert everyone involved before the organization hiring Lucian decided what to do with the information. It might also expose a trap he could not see from the road.

He returned to the second office instead.

The gray-coated clerk remained behind the transfer counter. Five parcels had moved into outgoing cases. The chain ledger listed six.

Lucian watched long enough to see the clerk sign the third office’s transfer sheet without presenting the missing parcel for inspection. The final record now said the blue-sealed packet had continued along the route.

The courier who brought it from the first office had no access to that signature.

Lucian’s report began there.

He mapped the office, the chute, the runner’s route, every counter-surveillance turn, and the dead drop. He described the clerk and runner without claiming either had opened the parcel or knew its contents. He copied the relevant seal number from the first office’s public record and noted the false transfer entry.

The locksmith read the report that evening.

The older man took longer with the pursuit map than he had with the tannery watch.

”Did the runner see you?” he asked.

”He looked for someone several times. I cannot prove he never saw me. He did not change the dead drop after leaving it.”

The route report ended at the untouched stone. The locksmith confirmed that Lucian had left the parcel where he found it and continued reading.

The locksmith placed the route sheet beside a copy of the courier records.

”The client suspected the carrier. Your report removes him from the loss and identifies a transfer clerk who can falsify the next signature. That completes the work you accepted.”

He counted the agreed payment onto the counter.

Lucian waited. The older man had not returned the bronze disk used to identify the contract.

”The tannery watch and today’s route were not tests.” The locksmith said. ”They were paid work. You completed both within their limits, reported uncertainty where it remained, and left property where you were told to leave it. That is enough for me to offer something beyond another isolated job.”

He opened a drawer beneath the workbench and removed a thin black ledger.

No customer accounts appeared inside. The first page held a simple name pressed into the paper.

[The Hidden Ledger]

”We collect information.” The locksmith said. ”We arrange access, discreet recovery, infiltration, smuggling, theft, and work that does not fit names respectable organizations place above their doors. Some contracts are legal. Some depend upon which law is being applied and who paid to write it.”

Lucian read the next page.

Probationary members received offers through a local representative. They could refuse any contract before accepting it. Once accepted, the written limits became binding. Payment, expenses, and the handling of recovered property had to be stated in advance. Using an assignment to conceal a different objective from the member carrying it out violated the Ledger’s own rules.

”Why invite me?” Lucian asked.

”Because you understand that completing a task is not permission to turn it into a larger one. Skills can be trained. Judgment is harder to purchase.”

The invitation did not promise safety or respectability. It offered work suited to the class Lucian had been building since he entered Caldris, along with access to people who understood that stealth involved more than remaining unseen.

He read every condition before signing the probationary page.

The locksmith added his mark beneath Lucian’s name, closed the black ledger, and gave him a new bronze disk carrying a shallow line shaped like an open book.

Lucian placed it inside his coat. The lost courier parcel remained beneath the stone arch for someone else to recover. His responsibility for that contract had ended with a complete report, and his first work for the Hidden Ledger would begin only when he chose to accept it.
