Daddy Always Gets Jealous

Zhong Qin looked toward Huo Jinnan, too overwhelmed with emotion to make a sound, ”Anan, look at these mooncakes!”

Huo Jinnan had already seen them, his brow furrowed and his eyes ignited with a thick, dark ink.

In the past, when the eldest brother couldn’t return home from the military for the Mid-Autumn Festival, he would always make some mooncakes by hand and send them to their mother.

It was the same pattern!

Too similar!

With trembling hands, Zhong Qin picked up a piece of mooncake and took a cautious bite, tasting the familiar flavor before sitting there, turning toward Anan, her sobs breaking, ”Anan, it’s Adong!”

Hearing her voice, Huo Jinxue and Huo Jinbei both looked over, viewing a box of mooncakes that were all too familiar, their feelings complex. How could their eldest brother still be alive after so many years since his death?

They remembered that the second brother had brought back the eldest brother’s ashes and military uniform, and buried them in Dongling.

With that thought, they lifted their heads to look at Huo Jinnan.

Huo Jinnan stood there, his eyes densely dark.

That year, the warplane had crashed, leaving no survivors! It was impossible for anyone to survive! The eldest brother couldn’t still be alive, so who was it, and what exactly did they want to do?

A chill ran through him at the thought.

He stood there and made a call to Huo Bei, ”Where are you?”

Huo Bei named a place, and Huo Jinnan guessed it was near Yan Xiaoxi; he wanted to silently accompany his sister for the Mid-Autumn Festival, ”Get the mayor’s number for me, as quickly as possible.”

An hour later, Huo Bei called back, ”Sir, I couldn’t find the mayor’s number, but I got his assistant’s.”

”Good, give it to me.”

Huo Jinnan stared at the box of mooncakes in front of him, took a piece, and tasted a bite, the overly familiar flavor chewed in his mouth, indescribable.

After hanging up the call and hearing the message alert, he opened it, glanced over, and dialed the number.

It connected quickly, and upon hearing the voice on the other end, Huo Jinnan asked in a low, resonant voice, ”Is this Assistant Fang?”

Fang Zheng replied formally, ”Yes, may I know who is calling?”

Huo Jinnan’s lips were tightly pursed, ”Huo Jinnan.”

”Oh, it’s Mr. Huo,” Fang Zheng said excitably, clearly a fan of Mr. Huo, ”What can I do for you, Mr. Huo?”

Hearing the slight change in Fang Zheng’s tone, Huo Jinnan glanced at the mooncakes and said, ”I heard that the new mayor was distributing mooncakes to the people of Hong Kong.”

Fang Zheng chuckled easily, ”Not that I’ve heard of. I’m the mayor’s assistant and nothing of the sort has come up. You must be mistaken, Mr. Huo.”

Huo Jinnan, noting that Fang Zheng wasn’t speaking bureaucratese to him, remembered the colonel, ”Right, the other day my dog damaged the mayor’s car. I’m responsible for it.”

Fang Zheng laughed, ”Mr. Huo, that’s not necessary. Mayor Jin didn’t mind much, and to this day he hasn’t gone to get it repaired.”

Huo Jinnan did not reply for a long time; a normal person riddled with such an unexpected incident should not have reacted like this—this Jin Bo—

”When will Mayor Jin have time for a meal together?” he inquired.

Fang Zheng apologized with a laugh, ”I’m sorry, Mr. Huo, but Mayor Jin really isn’t into that sort of thing—he doesn’t accept gifts and never attends any banquets.”

Huo Jinnan spoke low, ”I see, I was presumptuous.”

Fang Zheng held the phone, trying to think of something to say to his idol, and the line went quiet.

Huo Jinnan frowned, not hanging up. Something was amiss with this assistant too.

”Well then, Assistant Fang, you must be busy, sorry for disturbing you.”

After hanging up, he sat there looking at the mooncakes for a while, then made a call to Qin Shaojin, ”Send the colonel over.”
