Daddy Always Gets Jealous

Qin Huan held her breath and wriggled deeper into Huo Jinnan’s embrace, burying her head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat, only then did her own heartbeat gradually stabilize.

Huo Jinnan rubbed the area over her chest with a very appropriate strength.

Feeling the warmth of his palm, Qin Huan placed her hand on the back of his, pulling it little by little to rest on her belly, gently moving it, ”Babies, this is Daddy’s hand, Daddy loves you, you must try your best to grow...”

Then, thinking back to the scene in her dream, dreaming of Shen Mubai saying growth had already stopped, in that instant, she felt as if the world was spinning, and she broke down crying as if collapsing —

She looked up at Huo Jinnan, ”Our children will be okay, won’t they?”

Huo Jinnan looked down at Qin Huan, ”Mm,” he said and turned off the light, ”Go to sleep, I’ll always be here, right by your side.”

Qin Huan murmured a sound, snuggled closer into his arms, and closed her eyes.

A dreamless night, until dawn.

At breakfast, she saw the pig liver, didn’t like it, but still made an effort to finish it.

During a walk outside, she received a phone call from Wen Nuan.

Wen Nuan asked with concern, ”Sister Huanhuan, what happened yesterday?”

Qin Huan glanced at Huo Jinnan next to her, walked over, and sat on a swing, ”It was nothing; it’s just early pregnancy, he worries, afraid the cinema’s environment—”

Huo Jinnan gently pushed the swing, stood to one side lighting a cigarette, took a drag, and watched her.

Qin Huan, looking at Huo Jinnan, heard Wen Nuan’s voice—

”Sister Huanhuan, you’re still lying to me. Was it really just that? Would brother-in-law need to make such a big fuss?

She paused, unable to speak.

Wen Nuan stood in the corridor outside the classroom, ”Sister Huanhuan.”

Qin Huan saw the swing rise, extended her legs straight, smiled towards Huo Jinnan’s direction, and whispered, ”Nuannuan, don’t tell uncle, I may be a bit anemic, easily fainting in places without good air circulation.”

Wen Nuan was taken aback, ”That day you...”

Qin Huan quickly interrupted, ”Nothing happened that day, I just fell asleep.”

Asleep?

How could that be possible! With such loud volume from the 3D movie!

Hearing this, Wen Nuan, standing there, broke out in a cold sweat.

After hanging up the phone, she searched online and learned about the seriousness of anemia during pregnancy; she pondered then decided there was no point telling her dad, her brother-in-law, who cherished Sister Huanhuan so much, would surely protect her, right?

Back in the classroom, she heard people discussing.

”When will our ’Case Analysis’ class finally start?”

”Yeah, school has been in session for so long now!”

”I heard that the lawyer subbing for us is a top-notch one in the country, really awesome.”

”Really? Then isn’t he an old man?”

”Not sure about that, but he seems very impressive. That day I was in the office, I overheard the teachers saying the president and the faculty initially wanted him to teach graduate students, but for some reason, his assistant suddenly called, offering for him to sub for our major.”

”I see!”

...

Wen Nuan leaned in, ”Is it senior Du Bin?”

The class president Zhi Shan looked at Wen Nuan, ”No, it’s someone with a different surname, I heard it then but now suddenly I’ve forgotten.”

Wen Nuan lost interest upon hearing it was not Du Bin, sat down, and started thinking about recent events. Recalling how Sister Huanhuan had come to ask her to watch a movie that day, could it be because of a fight with her brother-in-law over her aunt’s matter?

After a while, she picked up her phone, saw the missed call from her brother-in-law from that day, and dialed back.

When the call connected, she softly called out, ”Brother-in-law.”
