Worthless Profession: Dragon Tamer

Chapter 137, Final Exam Competition

Translator: Silavin

After using Dragon Taming on the Dragon Egg, Lu Fan was surprised to find that it had no effect on the Star Dragon King’s Egg!

Lu Fan was stunned, and upon careful examination, he realised that his Pet Slots in his Character Panel were already full.

Only then did Lu Fan recall learning in his textbooks that Professions with Pet Sub-Spaces had limited Pet Slots.

Pet Slots opened up one more every 15 Levels, meaning Lu Fan could only have two Pets for now.

After all, Pets were different from Summons. There was no limit on the number of Summons, which did not occupy Pet Slots. For example, Summoners could summon as many creatures as they had the Skills for. However, for Professions with Pets, like Guardian Knights and Beast Tamers, they had a limit on Pet Slots.

For instance, when Guardian Knights reached Level 30 and successfully completed their Second Profession Change, officially unlocking the Riding Skill, their Pet Slot would open up, allowing them to tame Mounts.

Because they only gained the Skill to tame Mounts after their Second Profession Change, Guardian Knights essentially started with the ability to have three Mounts.

Generally, if conditions allowed it, Second Profession Change Guardian Knights would at least have one Land Mount and one Sky Mount, enabling them to fight on both terrains.

Of course, Sky Mounts were very difficult to tame, and most Guardian Knights only had Land Mounts. The price of a Sky Mount was not much less than a Peak Grade Gold Equipment.

In short, due to the rule of one Pet Slot opening every 15 Levels, Lu Fan temporarily had no spare Pet Slot for the Star Dragon King.

For Lu Fan to hatch the Dragon, he either needed to reach Level 30 first or find a Magic Potion to add a new Pet Slot.

Magic Potions for adding Pet Slots were treasures for Beast Tamers, and notoriously difficult to concoct. Naturally, they were equally expensive.

If conditions allowed it, Lu Fan would rather spend money on buying a No Level Requirement Enchantment Scroll to equip the Flying Dragon King’s Bone Wings earlier. After all, he was already Level 28, only two Levels away from opening his third Pet Slot at Level 30. This was something he could most likely achieve in less than a month. By then, he would be able to hatch the Star Dragon King’s Egg.

Although not being able to hatch the Star Dragon King was disappointing, Lu Fan remained optimistic. Once he reached Level 30, not only could he undergo his Second Profession Change, he already had another powerful Pet Dragon King available for him.

[The future looks promising!] Thinking this, Lu Fan’s last bit of disappointment vanished. He went straight to the bathroom for a shower and then had a good night’s sleep.

Lu Fan slept until after 8 o’clock, when Tao Xiaoman woke him up.

It turned out that early this morning was the finals of the freshmen exam, with Jiang Fengyun and Xu Jing on one side, facing a team composed of two people from the top fifteen amongst the freshmen.

The other team from Wind Cloud Pavilion should have been the runner-up in terms of Combat Power, but unfortunately, they had bad luck. In a previous match, there was an internal battle within Wind Cloud Pavilion, and Jiang Fengyun and Xu Jing won.

As for Qin Qiu and Tao Xiaoman, they were eliminated the day Lu Fan and Jian Ying left for the Flying Dragon Cemetery. Still, at least they got some University Points from the whole ordeal.

Tao Xiaoman woke Lu Fan up to watch Jiang Fengyun’s match, so Lu Fan could understand his opponent better.

After all, the matter of Lu Fan’s challenge to Jiang Fengyun had been fermenting for the past few days and was now known to everyone at Dragon Capital University. Especially now, with the freshmen exam coming to an end. After today’s match, Lu Fan was supposed to have a friendly match with Jiang Fengyun tomorrow, to see who would be this year’s Freshmen King.

The title of Freshmen King was extremely important, with the addition of the heated forum arguments between Lu Fan and Jiang Fengyun, whoever lost tomorrow would likely become a topic of discussion in Dragon Capital University for a very long time to come.

Although they knew Lu Fan would definitely have no problem beating Jiang Fengyun, Tao Xiaoman, Qin Qiu, and Han Ke still felt that caution was best. Having Lu Fan watch Jiang Fengyun’s final performance to understand his strengths and weaknesses would certainly be beneficial.

Lu Fan was not very interested though. Not in Jiang Fengyun’s actual strength and abilities. Let alone Jiang Fengyun, even the entire Wind Cloud Pavilion did not catch his eye.

Originally, Lu Fan wanted to quickly reach Level 30 and undergo his Second Profession Change, but seeing Qin Qiu and the others so interested in the freshmen exam finals, he relented. He chose to stay silent, not suggesting they get ready to clear Dungeon Instances. Instead, he agreed to go to the arena with everyone to watch, treating it as a two-day break after clearing the Secret Realm.

Of course, Jian Ying was also dragged with them to the arena.

After finishing the breakfast made by Han Ke, the group headed to the arena.

Because it was the finals for the freshmen exam, and Jiang Fengyun was very popular, there were many people at the arena.

When someone saw Lu Fan arrive, they immediately exclaimed, “Look, it’s Lu Fan! Lu Fan has come to watch the finals too!”

“These past two days, no one knows where Lu Fan went. He hasn’t been seen anywhere in the University, not even in class! He’s finally appeared!”

“Could it be true? The rumours have suggested that after his battle with Chen Tianzhi, he was injured and has been in the hospital all this time?”

“That shouldn’t be the case. He looks to be in good spirits. Besides, would someone who dared to challenge Jiang Fengyun do so if injured?”

“I think Lu Fan might have been training alone these past few days. He might have been focused on clearing Dungeon Instances to Level Up, preparing for his battle with Jiang Fengyun.”

“Yeah, watching the matches these past few days, Jiang Fengyun is really incredibly strong. Especially when paired with the Mage Silencer Xu Jing. Their synergy is unbeatable. It’s normal for Lu Fan to seclude himself and Level Up before facing Jiang Fengyun.”

“It seems that although Lu Fan talks big, he still considers Jiang Fengyun as his greatest opponent. Otherwise, why would he come to watch today? He’s here to check out his opponent, right?”

“Hmm, that makes sense. I guess Lu Fan and Jiang Fengyun’s should be quite close in Combat Power. Today is when the freshmen exam ends. Those two will have their match tomorrow. It’s going to be quite the show!”

“Haha! I’m really looking forward to this battle. Jiang Fengyun is stronger than Chen Tianzhi, so he should not be overwhelmed by Lu Fan. Tomorrow’s match will likely be a back-and-forth battle. We’ll surely be in for a treat…”

Everyone was eagerly discussing, as if one of the focal points of today’s freshmen exam finals was Lu Fan himself.

At the same time, everyone spontaneously cleared a path for Lu Fan, allowing him to enter the arena and find a good spot.

Tao Xiaoman had been worried about coming late and not finding good seats to watch the match, but seeing everyone voluntarily make way, she immediately beamed with joy.

She was no longer formal with Lu Fan and gave him a pat on the back, speaking with a grin, “It’s true that fame precedes you. Just by showing up, so many people recognise you and made way. Damn! That’s some serious celebrity aura you got there!”

Lu Fan smiled helplessly and said, “The one with the real ‘celebrity aura’ is Jiang Fengyun.”

“What do you mean?” Qin Qiu asked from the side.

Lu Fan said, “I’m just coming to the arena, and everyone thinks I’m here to check out Jiang Fengyun. But I honestly could not really care less about him…”

Han Ke smiled from the side and said, “Xiao Fan, you shouldn’t say that. As the saying goes, ‘Pride comes before a fall.’ Coming to check out your opponent certainly wouldn’t hurt.”

Lu Fan wanted to say something but held back, ultimately not expressing his true thoughts.

It was Jian Ying beside him who smiled and took the initiative to say, “Actually, Lu Fan really doesn’t need to watch Jiang Fengyun. He’s sure to win.”

Others might not know, but how could Jian Ying not? Not to mention anything else, even if Lu Fan just casually summoned a Flying Dragon King, it would be enough to crush Jiang Fengyun.

[The saying of ‘pride comes before a fall’ is true, but that’s in situations where the difference in Combat Power isn’t too great. As for Lu Fan… sparring with Jiang Fengyun is basically asking an adult to spar with a baby… No, an embryo…]

Jian Ying taking the initiative to speak up for Lu Fan caught Han Ke’s attention. She looked Jian Ying up and down, extremely surprised. “This is really rare of you, Jian Ying. Usually, you hardly speak at all. Yet, now you’re taking the initiative to speak up for Xiao Fan!?”

At these words, a subtle blush appeared on Jian Ying’s face as she explained, “I… I’m just telling the truth.”

Jian Ying’s unusual behaviour caught Qin Qiu’s eye, and for some reason, she suddenly felt a pang of unease.

At this moment, there was another commotion in the crowd, drawing everyone’s attention.

Lu Fan looked and saw that Jiang Fengyun and Xu Jing had also arrived.

Behind these two were nearly thirty people, presumably the so-called members of Wind Cloud Pavilion.

Jiang Fengyun had been in the spotlight these past few days, and Wind Cloud Pavilion had attracted more and more people to join. Thus, their group had grown.

At this time, Jiang Fengyun was in high spirits, walking at the front of the Wind Cloud Pavilion group. On the surface, he remained calm in response to the crowd’s admiration, but inside he was quite pleased with himself.

Suddenly, he spotted Lu Fan’s group in the front row seats by the arena.

This raised his eyebrow, followed by an internal cold laugh.

[So, Lu Fan came!? Sure enough, after pretending to be an expert and disappearing for two days, he couldn’t keep up the act. Now, he finally cannot sit still anymore and has come to check me out? Hmph! If you want to see, then I’ll show you! Just don’t be too scared of me and run away at the last minute!]

Jiang Fengyun raised his chin. Without interacting with Lu Fan, he led his people to the other side of the arena where the match would take place, waiting for the match to begin.

Soon, it was time for the match to start.

An examiner walked onto the arena and announced what would be happening today.

The first match was considered a warm-up. It would be between the two losing teams from yesterday’s semi-finals, to decide the third and fourth place.

So, Jiang Fengyun’s match, which was the freshmen exam finals, would be the second match.

After briefly announcing the rules, the four people for the first match came to the arena, officially beginning the match for third place.

Both sides that had made it this far were not weak, and the two teams were evenly matched, making for a back-and-forth battle.

Some Senior Students occasionally exclaimed in admiration, feeling that this year’s freshmen were really impressive. The match for third and fourth place was so intense, with the four students demonstrating Combat Power not inferior to some of Dragon Capital University’s top students who had been studying for two or three years.

If the match for the third and fourth place was already so impressive, would the finals not be even more spectacular?

Furthermore, the match between Jiang Fengyun and Lu Fan would surely be an even greater battle of Dragons and Tigers.
