The Queen's Mage

Chapter 11: Useful Failure

At midday, Lia pronounced the wound “unchanged.”

Marielle considered this neutral.

Lia did not. “The edges should have closed more.”

“They have not opened.”

“That is not the standard.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Lia removed the old dressing and inspected the cut again.

The wound itself looked disappointingly ordinary.

A narrow red line.

Slight swelling.

Nothing visually deserving the amount of attention it received.

Lia touched carefully around the tissue. “Pain?”

“No.”

“Here?”

“No.”

“Here?”

“Yes.”

“Different from this morning?”

Marielle thought. “No.”

“Pulling?”

“Not presently.”

“Heat?”

“No.”

“Numbness?”

“No.”

Lia began replacing the dressing. “You will come back before supper.”

“I remember.”

“I am confirming.”

“That seems unnecessary.”

“It is not.”

The door opened.

Daravan entered.

Marielle looked at him, then at Lia. “Did you summon him?”

“No.”

Daravan stopped. “I came to speak with Lia.”

“You say that often.”

“Lia has information relevant to security.”

“I also have information relevant to security.”

“Yes.”

“Then you could say you came to speak with both of us.”

Daravan considered. “I could.”

He did not amend the statement.

Irritating.

“How was the wall?” he asked.

Lia looked at him.

Marielle looked at him.

Daravan apparently noticed both looks. “The analysis,” he clarified.

“The wall is still lying,” Marielle said.

He sighed. “More specifically.”

“Some sections are returning magical readings inconsistent with their physical condition.”

That got his full attention.

“Sabotage?” Daravan asked.

“We do not know.”

“Failure?”

“We do not know.”

“What do you know?”

Marielle settled the loose left sleeve over the new dressing. “That the system believes it is healthier than its materials say it should be.”

Daravan frowned. “And Serali agrees?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Marielle looked at him. “You sound surprised.”

“I am relieved there are two of you.”

“That is sensible.”

Lia said, “She may continue until the late-afternoon check.”

Marielle turned. “I thought before supper.”

“You have been awake longer than I expected.”

“That is not my fault.”

“No. Nevertheless.”

Marielle sighed. “I also have the fountain.”

Daravan’s eyes closed.

Lia stared. “What fountain?”

“The gala fountain.”

Daravan opened his eyes. “No.”

Marielle looked at him. “You do not know what it is.”

“I know enough.”

“It has glass fish.”

“That is not reassuring.”

“They jump.”

Lia stared at her. “Why?”

Marielle was briefly unsure how to answer such a question. “Because that is the design.”

Daravan rubbed one hand over his face. “The gala is in two weeks.”

“Yes.”

“You are injured.”

“Yes.”

“The fountain can wait.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

Marielle frowned.

Because it could not.

The mechanism was incomplete.

Three fish jumped correctly.

The fourth rotated too early.

The fifth struck the return arc at the wrong angle.

The sixth had not yet been balanced.

Leaving it that way was unacceptable.

“It is unfinished.”

Daravan waited.

Apparently he expected more explanation.

“There are six fish.”

“Yes.”

“Only three work.”

“Then use three.”

Marielle stared at him.

He stared back.

“That is an unacceptable solution.”

“Why?”

“Because there are six.”

Lia made a faint sound.

Daravan looked toward her. “Do not.”

“I said nothing.”

“You were thinking it.”

Lia smiled.

Marielle disliked this phrase becoming institutional.

“The fountain was commissioned for the gala,” she said. “The glasswork is complete. The housing is assembled in the workshop. The pump rhythm requires correction.”

“With one arm.”

“I have two arms.”

Daravan looked at the bandage. “One currently under formal objection.”

“Then I have one arm, two apprentices, and several tools that do not require carrying anything.”

“And a chair,” Lia said.

Marielle glanced at her. “Yes. Apparently I have a chair.”

Daravan appeared to be counting.

Possibly conditions.

Possibly patience.

Finally he said, “No ladders.”

“Fine.”

“No lifting.”

“Already agreed.”

“No climbing into the fountain.”

Stolen content warning: this content belongs on NovelPhoenix. Report any occurrences.

Daravan’s eyes narrowed at her pause.

“I had not planned to,” Marielle said.

“That pause was too long.”

“I was determining whether circumstances might require it.”

“They will not.”

“Then no.”

“You stop for Lia’s late-afternoon examination.”

“Yes.”

“And at evening.”

Marielle looked toward Lia.

Lia nodded.

Organized opposition again.

“Fine.”

Daravan exhaled.

Marielle checked that the loose sleeve would not catch on the dressing.

Lia reached for a clean cloth, then glanced toward the empty space beside the bed. “Where is the basin?”

Marielle continued arranging her sleeve.

“Marielle.”

“I have not needed it.”

“That was not the question.”

Daravan said, “I removed it.”

Lia turned toward him. “You removed my basin?”

“It was hostile.”

A small warmth moved unexpectedly through Marielle’s chest.

Not large.

Not important.

Probably amusement.

She smiled.

Lia looked at her. “You persuaded the Captain of the Guard to steal medical equipment.”

“It was not theft,” Daravan said. “I relocated it.”

“You removed it from my infirmary.”

“Due to hostility.”

“The duck was poorly proportioned,” Marielle added.

Lia stared at both of them. “Out.”

Daravan left.

Marielle followed more slowly.

Still smiling.

She did not think about why.

There was work.

The fourth glass fish jumped in the middle of the afternoon.

Not correctly.

But it jumped.

Marielle sat beside the unfinished fountain with a notebook balanced on one knee while two apprentices adjusted the return gear beneath her direction.

The fountain occupied the center of the workshop, waiting to be moved into the great hall once its mechanism behaved.

Six blown-glass fish curved through pale stone waves.

When complete, water would rise through concealed channels, catch each fish in sequence, and send it briefly leaping through a ring of light before returning it to the basin.

The first fish jumped.

Then the second.

Third.

Fourth—

Turned sideways.

Hit the water badly.

Marielle winced. “Timing arm three degrees later.”

The apprentice beneath the housing adjusted it.

Again.

First.

Second.

Third.

Fourth.

Clean.

Marielle smiled.

Good.

Not finished.

Closer.

At the edge of the room, Corren leaned against the wall with the resigned expression of a man who had spent the afternoon learning that engineering contained more water than expected. “You said nothing was going to explode.”

“Nothing has.”

“One fish nearly hit me.”

“That was earlier.”

Corren stared.

Marielle returned to her notebook.

The adjustment to the fourth fish had changed the interval before the fifth. She marked the new timing beside the old one, then crossed out the correction she had planned that morning.

“Not that gear,” she told the apprentice reaching beneath the housing. “The return catches earlier now. We need to test the whole sequence before changing anything else.”

He withdrew his hand.

Good. Her apprentices listened to instructions. This was an excellent quality in people who stood near moving machinery.

The other apprentice checked the padded screen behind the basin. They had put it there after the first badly directed leap. Glasswork was expensive. Guards were also expensive, although Corren had objected when she had explained the precaution in those terms.

“No adjustment with the pump running,” Marielle added.

“I know,” the apprentice said.

“Yes. I am confirming.”

Corren glanced at her, but was considerate enough to say nothing.

Marielle set the notebook on the stand beside her chair. She could see the whole mechanism from here: the intake, the timing arms, the catches beneath the fish. Ordinarily she would have knelt to inspect the fourth return herself. Today she had to describe the angle and wait while someone else checked it.

It was slower.

It was also working.

“Tell me whether the catch touches before the fish settles,” she said.

The apprentice bent closer. “Just before.”

“That is the problem. Mark it. Do not adjust it yet.”

For once, staying in the chair had kept her from changing a component before she had finished observing it.

She declined to record that as an argument in Lia’s favor.

The fifth fish launched.

Too soon.

“Again.”

Lia inspected the wound for the third time that day before supper.

Still no meaningful healing.

Still no renewed bleeding.

Still no fever.

Still no explanation.

“You are going to bed early,” Lia said.

“I have notes.”

“You may read them in bed.”

“I need the wall records.”

“You may not bring a wall to bed.”

“I was not going to bring the wall.”

Lia gave her a look.

“Only the records,” Marielle said.

“That sentence did not help.”

Marielle sighed.

By the time she returned to her rooms, the twelve sample results had been copied into one notebook.

The fountain calculations occupied another.

Her arm pulsed faintly beneath the bandage.

Three systems.

The wound.

The fountain.

The wall.

Only one of them was behaving honestly.

Marielle looked at her arm.

Not that one.

The fountain failed visibly.

A fish struck the wrong angle.

A gear skipped.

Water landed where it should not.

Useful failure.

Engineering was considerate enough to announce its problems.

The wall was different.

The wall said everything was fine.

And something inside it was very carefully wrong.

Marielle opened the wall notebook.

Tomorrow, Serali would test the sixth and ninth convergence samples again.

Marielle would compare them against the original construction records.

Then perhaps the wall would stop lying.

Or they would learn why it had begun.

Either would be useful.

She turned to the fountain notes.

Fish five remained early by a second.

Fish six had yet to jump at all.

Marielle frowned.

Unacceptable.

She wrote three possible adjustments in the margin, closed the notebook, and set it beside the bed.

Then reopened it and added a fourth.

Better.

She put it down again.

The wall could wait until morning.

The fish could wait until morning.

Her arm, apparently, had no interest in schedules at all.

Marielle turned out the lamp.

At least engineering admitted when it was wrong.

Chapter 12: Expected Answers

By the ninth morning after First Sun, Serali had developed a personal dislike of sample six.

This was unreasonable.

Sample six was a piece of mortar. It had no intentions, no loyalties, and no capacity for deception.

Marielle had informed her of this yesterday.

Serali remained unconvinced.

“It is doing it again,” she said.

Marielle looked up from the opposite side of the worktable. “What?”

“Being wrong politely.”

“That is not a measurable quality.”

“It should be.”

Serali lowered her hand over the shallow tray. A thread of shadow stretched from her fingertips, carrying her senses toward the ward residue held in the material.

The response came immediately.

Smooth. Balanced. Stable.

Exactly the answer recorded on the previous two mornings.

Beside it lay Marielle’s measurements, which were considerably less reassuring.

Serali withdrew her hand. “The same.”

Marielle made a dissatisfied noise and marked the result.

They had repeated the physical tests, checked the collection notes, and compared the samples against the repair records. None of that had explained why sections in different states of deterioration returned such similar magical readings.

It had, however, eliminated several ordinary mistakes.

Serali would have preferred an ordinary mistake.

Marielle apparently preferred knowing which mistakes it was not.

Pell stood near the engineering-room door. Orran had taken the window. Beyond them, Corren guarded the entrance and Mael the passage toward the workshops.

Four guards for two women examining pieces of masonry.

Daravan would probably have called this appropriate.

Marielle had called it architecturally excessive.

Yesterday she had also asked Corren to hold a calibration rod because he was “standing nearby with structurally useful arms.”

Corren had done it.

Serali had no intention of telling Daravan.

She drew sample nine closer.

Spellwork left habits. The way an anchor took hold, the order in which a ward reinforced itself, the small accommodations made for imperfect materials: those things varied even when two spells were intended to perform the same task.

Cillian had taught her to notice the differences before she understood why they mattered.

Not because he had been preparing her for anything useful.

Because they had been bored.

He had brought old practice diagrams into the room where she was hiding. Serali had told him half of them were ugly.

He had told her ugliness could still kill people.

She had said that seemed unfair.

He had laughed.

The memory arrived whole, unexpectedly vivid against the pale worktable.

Serali looked down.

Sample nine.

She followed the remaining ward structure, then repeated the pass more slowly. The same neat response met her senses at the point where the return should have reflected the condition of the material.

It did not tell her how the ward had arrived at that answer.

That distinction had begun to bother her more than the answer itself.

Marielle set down her pencil. “What?”

“We keep asking it the same question.”

“Whether it is functioning correctly.”

“Yes.”

“Using different materials.”

“But reading the same reporting structure.” Serali pointed toward the diagram between them. “If that part is wrong, changing the sample does not necessarily give us an independent answer.”

Marielle’s eyes sharpened. “We are checking the measurement with the instrument that produced it.”

“Possibly.”

Marielle reached for her notebook. “So the wall is not measuring itself.”

“Maybe.”

Her pencil stopped. “Maybe?”

“I said possibly.”

“You said maybe after I wrote it.”

“That is because you write very quickly.”

Marielle stared at her.

Serali stared back.

Marielle crossed out half the sentence.

Better.

“I can read what the ward is reporting,” Serali said. “I cannot yet tell whether that report reflects its condition, an old calibration, or something someone has made it return.”

“Could someone do that?”

“In theory.”

“In practice?”

Serali looked at the tray. “Difficult enough that I would prefer not to guess.”

Marielle nodded. That, apparently, was acceptable.

“What would settle it?”

“A test that does not ask the wall to diagnose itself.”

Marielle turned to a clean page.

“We need a separate array,” Serali continued. “One that measures the ward’s response without using its own diagnostic return.”

“Portable?”

“Preferably.”

“Could we build one?”

“Yes.”

Marielle smiled.

Serali pointed at her. “No.”

“I said nothing.”

“You made a face.”

“I have many faces.”

“That one means engineering.”

“They all mean engineering.”

Unfortunately true.

Serali pulled the wall diagram closer. “We would have to keep the existing system from feeding its answer into ours.”

“Isolate the connection.”

“Possibly more than the diagnostic connection. I need to work out where they overlap.”

Marielle’s pencil slowed. “Would that interrupt protection?”

“It could.”

“How much?”

“I do not know yet.”

The room seemed quieter after she said it.

Marielle studied the marked convergence points. “Then we determine that before choosing where to test.”

Simple.

As though they had not just proposed interfering with one component of the capital’s defensive wall because they could no longer trust its assurances.

Serali was beginning to understand why Daravan looked tired all the time.

Lia appeared in the doorway at midday.

Marielle looked at the clock.

“Do not,” Lia said.

“I was checking.”

“You should have begun walking here five minutes ago.”

“The appointment is at midday.”

“At the infirmary.”

Marielle considered this distinction with visible displeasure, then gathered her notebook.

“You may leave that,” Serali said.

“No.”

“I am not going to steal it.”

“That is not the concern.”

“What is?”

“You might reorganize it.”

Serali stared.

Marielle held the notebook against her chest. “You sort by magical relevance. I sort by structural sequence.”

“I could refrain.”

“That would be preferable.”

Corren fell into step beside her. Mael left the corridor junction to accompany them.

Lia waited until Marielle had cleared the doorway before looking at Serali. “Make certain she eats when she returns.”

“She agreed to eat lunch.”

“Yes,” Lia said. “She also agreed to come to the infirmary.”

A fair point.

Serali watched them disappear, then returned to the diagram.

She could design the new array here. Test its components here. Do everything that did not involve touching the wall itself.

And after that, she would need permission.

Which meant explaining what she had found before she knew precisely what it meant.

She disliked that part.

By the time Marielle returned, Serali had written three questions beneath the sketch.

Which connections would need to be isolated?

What protection would remain?

How quickly could they restore the original arrangement?

Marielle read them, sat down, and began adding notes.

Neither suggested they were ready to perform the test.

Allandra was still in her office when Serali arrived late that afternoon.

Verya had gone.

Hagen had not.

He sat near the window with a folder open across one knee. Allandra looked up, and warmth touched the bond before she spoke.

“How did the wall work go?”

Serali nearly said she did not know yet.

Then nearly said she would return when she did.

That would have been easier. Cleaner.

Old habit.

“I found something, Your Majesty.”

Allandra’s attention sharpened. “What?”

“I am not certain what it means yet.”

Hagen closed his folder.

Serali stepped closer to the desk. “The discrepancies persist. But our tests may be relying on the part of the system that is giving us unreliable information.”

Allandra frowned. “Its own diagnostics.”

“Yes.”

“Do you think someone altered them?”

“It is one explanation. I cannot establish that from the samples.”

There.

Unfinished. Shared anyway.

Allandra held her gaze. “Thank you for telling me.”

Serali had prepared for questions. For the need to defend why she had brought a possibility instead of a conclusion.

The thanks unsettled her more.

“What do you need?” Allandra asked.

“Permission to develop an independent diagnostic array.”

Hagen leaned forward slightly. “Independent of the wall?”

“Yes.” Serali laid the sketch on the desk. “We need to measure what it actually does, rather than rely on what it tells us.”

Allandra looked down at the diagram. “What would the test require?”

“I need to finish the design first.”

Hagen smiled faintly. “That inspires confidence.”

Serali glanced at him. “I know what it needs to measure. I do not yet know how much of the existing array would need to be isolated.”

Allandra’s gaze returned to her. “Could it weaken the wall?”

“Temporarily.”

“How much?”

“I do not know yet.”

“Then no.”

Serali went still.

“Not yet,” Allandra continued.

Serali waited.

“Design it. Work out the risk. Identify where it can be tested most safely, and how you would restore the existing system if something goes wrong. Bring me that plan.”

Serali looked at the questions written beneath her sketch.

The same questions.

“If the risk is acceptable?”

“Then we consider the test.”

Serali nodded. “Yes, Your Majesty.”

Something defensive inside her eased. Allandra had not asked her to abandon the problem. She had asked her to account for what solving it might cost.

Hagen studied the diagram. “Daravan will hate this.”

“Yes,” Allandra said.

“He should review the precautions,” Serali said. “Once there are precautions to review.”

Hagen’s mouth twitched. “I recommend leading with that sentence.”

Serali ignored him and gathered the sketch.

“Our wall should not be able to lie about whether it is failing.”

Silence.

She heard the word only after it had escaped.

Our.

Hagen’s eyebrows lifted.

Allandra went very still.

Serali could correct it. The wall. Avalusia’s wall. The structure she had been appointed to help protect.

She did not.

Allandra’s smile began slowly.

Not broad.

Worse.

Warm.

Hagen looked down at his folder with the exaggerated dignity of a man pretending not to have heard anything at all.

Serali narrowed her eyes. “If you say anything—”

“I have said nothing.”

“You are saying nothing very loudly.”

Allandra laughed.

Serali closed her eyes.

Home, apparently, was exhausting.
