The Queen's Mage

Chapter 158: Sunrise Cake

Everly began buttering the roll with firm moral purpose.

Allandra looked away before her daughter could see what the moment had done to her.

Everly looked up again. “Do other people know?”

“Yes,” Allandra said.

“Because Vulmar told?”

“Yes.”

“That is rude.”

Serali laughed.

The sound came out startled and real.

Everly smiled, pleased to have improved something.

“It is very rude,” Serali said.

Hagen leaned back. “Possibly our official position.”

Verya would hate that. Allandra almost smiled.

Everly’s brow furrowed. “Will people be mean to Serali?”

The room sobered again.

Allandra said, “Some people may be.”

“Why?”

“Because they are afraid,” Allandra said. “Or because they want to use the story for themselves. Or because they think blood matters more than choice.”

Everly frowned. “Blood is inside.”

Hagen looked delighted despite himself.

“Yes,” Serali said gravely. “It usually is.”

“Choice is outside,” Everly continued, apparently discovering philosophy by way of anatomy. “You can see it.”

Allandra stared at her daughter.

Hagen’s expression went very still.

Serali looked as if she had been struck.

Everly, unaware she had just said something several councilors would spend hours making worse, bit into her roll.

Allandra found her voice. “That is why Serali may take her oath at First Sun.”

Everly brightened. “At the festival?”

“Yes.”

“Outside?”

“Yes.”

“And everyone will hear?”

“If Serali chooses to do it.”

Everly looked at Serali. “Will you?”

Serali looked down at the table.

Her fingers touched her cuff, where the tiny silver stars of her gown caught the firelight.

“I think so,” she said.

Everly nodded. “I will listen very well.”

“I would be grateful.”

“Can I clap?”

Serali blinked. “After?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t know.”

Everly looked to Allandra. “Can people clap after oaths?”

Allandra was not entirely sure. “Sometimes.”

Hagen said, “If they are wise, they will.”

Allandra looked at him.

His eyes remained on Everly, but his face had softened in that rare, unguarded way that belonged only to the child.

Everly accepted this as settled. “I will clap first if no one remembers.”

Serali’s throat worked.

“That,” she said, “would be very brave.”

“I am brave.”

“Yes,” Serali said. “I know.”

Everly sat taller.

Then, because she was still four and a dinner conversation could not remain emotionally devastating forever, she asked, “How many desserts can I have at First Sun?”

Hagen closed his eyes.

The tension broke.

Not completely.

Enough.

Allandra laughed before she could stop herself. “That depends.”

Everly narrowed her eyes. “On what?”

“On what Lessa permits.”

Everly turned to Lessa, who sat with admirable composure.

Lessa said, “Two festival sweets before midnight. One warm drink. One sunrise cake if you are awake.”

Everly gasped. “Only two before midnight?”

“You fell asleep before sunrise last year after four.”

Everly looked offended by history. “I was three.”

“You were.”

“Now I am four.”

“Yes.”

“Almost five later.”

“Yes.”

“So I can have more.”

Hagen leaned forward. “An interesting chronological argument.”

Everly nodded at him. “Thank you.”

“It is not necessarily persuasive.”

She frowned. “Whose side are you on?”

“Dessert’s, generally.”

Serali said, “A dangerous allegiance.”

“Always.”

Everly turned to Serali. “How many desserts do you need to stay awake all night?”

Serali considered this with the gravity it deserved. “At least six.”

Allandra looked at her. “Serali.”

“What? I am being consulted as a foreign expert.”

“You have never attended First Sun.”

“I have stayed awake in much worse circumstances than a festival.”

That sentence came too easily.

The room dipped.

Serali seemed to realize it a heartbeat late.

Everly, mercifully, did not understand the edge.

“Six,” she breathed, awed.

“No,” Allandra said.

“Three,” Hagen suggested.

Lessa looked betrayed. “Your Highness.”

Hagen smiled. “Three if one is very small.”

Everly seized on this. “Tiny desserts count differently.”

“No,” Allandra said.

“Yes,” Everly said. “Because they are tiny.”

Serali nodded. “There is legal precedent.”

“There is not.”

“There could be.”

Hagen looked at Allandra. “You see? Royal Mage supports culinary reform.”

Allandra pressed two fingers to her temple. “I regret this dinner.”

“No, you don’t,” Serali said.

The room went quiet again, but this time softly.

Allandra looked at her.

Serali realized, perhaps, what she had said. That she had read Allandra’s heart too easily, too openly, across a family table.

Her face warmed.

Hagen saw that too.

But he only picked up his wine and said, “For the record, I regret very little involving custard.”

Lessa lifted the lid from the covered dish.

This book’s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

Custard.

Everly cheered.

The rest of dinner turned, mercifully, toward festival logistics.

Everly wanted to know whether she could carry two lanterns. No. Whether Serali could make shadow animals. No official answer. Whether Uncle Hagen would dance. Unfortunately yes, Hagen said. Whether Mother would light the eastern flame. Yes. Whether Serali would stand with her. That one made the adults pause.

Serali answered before Allandra had to.

“Nearby,” she said.

Everly accepted this. “Good. If you are too far, I will wave.”

“Please do.”

“If people are mean, I will glare.”

“I have seen your glare,” Serali said. “It is formidable.”

Hagen smiled. “She gets it from Allandra.”

Allandra said, “She improved it herself.”

Everly looked pleased.

By the time Lessa began the difficult work of removing dessert from the table before Everly could lick the serving spoon, the child’s earlier solemnity had softened into festival excitement. She listed the order of necessary sweets. Honey spirals. Lantern buns. Star biscuits. Sunrise cake. Maybe sugared almonds if they were “for strength.” Lessa took mental notes with the resignation of a woman negotiating with a force of nature.

When dinner ended, Everly climbed down from her chair and came to Serali.

She did not run this time.

She stood in front of her and held out her arms.

“May I hug you?”

Serali’s face softened.

“Yes.”

Everly wrapped her arms around Serali’s waist and squeezed.

Serali’s hand hovered above the child’s back for one second, then settled there.

Everly’s voice came muffled against her gown. “You are still my Serali.”

Allandra stopped breathing.

Hagen looked away.

Serali’s eyes closed.

“Yes,” she whispered. “I am.”

Everly released her and stepped back. “But not like owning.”

Serali made a sound that might have been a laugh or a sob if she had allowed it to finish.

“No,” she said. “Not like owning.”

“Like friend.”

“Yes. Like friend.”

Everly nodded, satisfied by the precision.

Then she turned to Allandra. “Mother, can Serali have my sunrise cake if she gets sad?”

Allandra’s eyes burned.

“She may,” she said, voice steady only by force. “If she wants it.”

Everly nodded. “Good.”

Then she took Lessa’s hand and began explaining that tiny desserts required a new counting system.

When the door closed behind them, the room remained quiet.

Not empty.

Just changed.

Hagen set down his glass.

“Well,” he said lightly, though his voice was softer than usual. “That went better than several diplomatic summits I have attended.”

Serali sat slowly back in her chair, as if her knees had become uncertain.

“She did not care,” she said.

Allandra looked at her. “No.”

Serali stared at the door. “She asked. But she did not…”

“Change?” Hagen supplied.

Serali nodded.

Hagen’s expression was unreadable for one rare moment.

Then he said, “Everly has always had an irritatingly precise sense of what matters.”

Allandra looked at him.

He met her gaze.

There was love there. Real, unguarded, and painful.

For Everly. For Allandra too, perhaps.

Then he smiled, and the door closed over whatever else had been visible.

“I will leave you both before this becomes too sincere,” he said, rising.

“Hagen,” Allandra said.

He paused.

“Thank you.”

For once, he did not make a joke of it immediately.

He inclined his head. “I am her uncle. Occasionally that has uses.”

“And my brother.”

His smile shifted.

Old affection. Old wound.

“Yes,” he said. “And your brother.”

Then he left.

Allandra and Serali remained at the table amid cooling plates, custard crumbs, and the echo of Everly’s certainty.

Serali looked down at her hands.

“All that fear,” she said.

Allandra waited.

Serali’s voice was small with wonder and exhaustion. “And she just decided which word not to use.”

Allandra reached across the table.

Stopped halfway.

Serali looked at her hand.

Then placed her own in it.

Allandra’s fingers closed gently.

“She loves you,” Allandra said.

Serali’s mouth tightened.

“I know,” she said, as if the knowledge hurt.

Allandra’s thumb moved once over her knuckles. “Is that all right?”

Serali looked toward the door Everly had gone through.

Then back at Allandra.

“I think,” she said quietly, “it might be one of the reasons I am brave enough.”

Allandra’s throat closed.

No strategy had prepared her for that.

No crown. No law. No Mantle. No council.

Only the woman across from her, the child down the hall, and the impossible fact that love, when given freely, could make fear carryable instead of small.

Allandra lifted Serali’s hand and kissed her fingers.

Serali’s eyes softened.

“Careful,” she said. “Hagen might come back.”

“I will risk it.”

“That is poor governance.”

“Yes.”

Serali’s mouth curved.

Outside the windows, winter held the city in its cold hands.

Inside, for one dinner, Vulmar’s story had entered the room, been examined by a child, and found wanting.

It did not solve anything.

But it mattered.

And for once, that was enough.

Chapter 159: The Queen’s Bed

The dining room felt strangely large after everyone had gone.

The fire had burned lower while they talked. Somewhere down the corridor, Everly’s voice floated faintly through the palace before dissolving into quiet again.

Allandra did not let go of Serali’s hand.

Neither of them seemed inclined to move.

The plates had gone cold. The custard had not survived.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Serali was the one who finally broke the silence. ”I’m sorry.”

Allandra looked up immediately. ”For what?”

Serali smiled without humor. ”That has become a remarkably difficult question to answer.”

Her thumb traced absently over the rim of her empty teacup.

”You.”

”Hagen.”

”Everly.”

”Lessa.”

”The council.”

She looked down.

”I seem to have become extraordinarily expensive.”

Allandra shook her head. ”No.”

Serali let out a quiet breath. ”They’re questioning your judgment.”

”I know.”

”They’re questioning whether you should have trusted me.”

”I know.”

”They’re questioning whether you should be queen.”

The words hung between them.

”And Hagen...”

This time, Allandra did not answer immediately.

”He shouldn’t have to keep defending you because of me.”

For a long moment, only the fire spoke.

Then Allandra said quietly, ”He isn’t defending me.”

Serali looked up.

”He’s defending the Crown.”

Another pause.

”And perhaps me.”

She smiled faintly.

”The distinction matters to Hagen.”

Serali watched her carefully. ”You don’t sound certain.”

”I’m not.”

She looked toward the darkened window. ”When my father died...”

”...his last words to Hagen were...”

She swallowed once. ”’You will be a fine king.’”

Serali was very still.

”He believed it. We all did.” A sad smile touched Allandra’s face. ”I was standing at the edge of the Hall of First Light holding Everly. I wasn’t even wearing court colors. I was there to watch my brother become king.”

”The Mantle settled on me instead.”

Silence.

”I don’t think either of us understood what had happened for several minutes.”

Serali smiled faintly. ”No?”

”No.”

”I remember looking at Hagen.”

She laughed quietly. ”He looked far more surprised than I did.”

The smile faded. ”Then everyone else started looking at me.”

Serali squeezed her hand gently. ”So he accepted it.”

Allandra was quiet for a long time. ”No.”

The answer surprised even her.

”He accepted that there was nothing he could do.”

She looked down at their joined hands. ”That isn’t the same thing.”

Serali frowned. ”You think he still believes he should have been king.”

”I think...” Allandra said slowly, ”...that my brother spent his entire life preparing for a future that vanished in a heartbeat.”

She looked toward the fire. ”I know he loves me. I know he loves Avalusia. I also know he never chose this life.”

She met Serali’s eyes again. ”He chose not to tear the kingdom apart trying to change it.”

The room fell quiet.

”He could have?”

Allandra nodded once. ”He was the heir. There were noble houses that would have followed him. They came to him after the Mantle chose me.”

Serali’s eyes widened.

”He turned every one of them away. He reported the dangerous ones.”

Another pause.

”But they never stopped existing.”

”No.”

”They simply stopped speaking quite so loudly.”

Serali looked down. ”And now they are.”

”Yes.”

She hesitated. ”Because of me.”

”No.”

The word came immediately.

Firmly.

”Because of Vulmar.”

Serali started to protest. ”If it hadn’t been—”

”If it hadn’t been this...” Allandra interrupted gently. ”...it would have been something else.”

She leaned forward slightly.

”Serali. Vulmar did not discover a weakness.”

”He chose one. He has wanted a reason to weaken Avalusia since the ceasefire. He simply decided that this one wears your face.”

Serali looked away. ”I still hate that it’s my face.”

”I know.”

”I hate that he is using it.”

Another silence settled between them.

Softer now.

Less jagged.

Serali looked toward the empty chair where Everly had sat. ”I keep thinking...”

She searched for the words. ”What if I become something that comes between all of us?”

Allandra frowned.

”Between me and you.”

”Between you and Hagen.”

”Between you and Everly.”

She looked down. ”Vulmar doesn’t have to win. He only has to make me expensive enough that everyone wishes I had never come.”

The words hurt to say.

Allandra answered immediately. ”No.”

Serali looked up.

”That is what Vulmar wants you to believe.”

She squeezed Serali’s hand gently. ”He wants you to think your existence is the burden.”

”It isn’t. He is.”

Silence settled between them.

”I don’t know how to believe that,” Serali admitted.

”You don’t have to.”

Allandra lifted their joined hands slightly. ”You only have to let us keep proving it.”

Serali looked down at their hands.

After a long moment, she smiled.

Small.

Real.

”I think...”

She laughed quietly.

”...I’m becoming rather attached to being proven wrong.”

Allandra smiled back. ”I had noticed.”

”Is that poor governance?”

”Catastrophically.”

Serali’s smile widened. ”I was afraid of that.”

Allandra rose first.

Neither of them had noticed how low the fire had burned.

”Come with me.”

Serali looked up. ”To your office?”

”No.”

A faint smile.

”My rooms.”

Serali blinked.

For a moment, she simply looked at her. ”You want me to stay there?”

”If you will.”

Serali was quiet.

Usually, she preferred her own rooms.

They were familiar.

She knew every sound the walls made in the night, every place shadows gathered.. They had become safe because she had built them into safety.

Allandra’s rooms were different.

”I would like that,” Serali said.

The walk through the private corridors was almost silent.

The room was unmistakably Allandra’s. Not because it was grand. Because it wasn’t.

The royal bedchamber was spacious, but lived in.

A wide hearth glowed softly beneath a carved mantel crowded with objects no steward would ever have arranged so unevenly: Everly’s crooked clay fox, a polished stone Hagen had once insisted resembled a dragon, pressed spring flowers between glass, and Finnian’s signet resting in a small cedar box that had been opened often enough for the wood around the clasp to shine.

Books stood in untidy stacks beside a pair of comfortable chairs rather than arranged on decorative shelves.

A sword rested within easy reach beside the bed. Not ceremonial. Used.

The bed itself surprised Serali most.

Large enough for a queen.

Made with linen instead of embroidered silk.

The coverlet was deep green, quilted by hand, its stitching slightly uneven in places.

”It doesn’t look like a royal bed.”

Allandra smiled. ”It looks like somewhere people sleep.”

”I was going to say that.”

”I hoped so.”

Serali walked slowly through the room.

Nothing had been arranged to impress anyone.

There was no audience here.

Only Allandra.

”I like it.”

Relief flickered across Allandra’s face before she could hide it. ”I’m glad.”

They settled first in front of the fire.

Serali claimed she wasn’t tired.

Then immediately curled against Allandra on the sofa as though her bones had negotiated otherwise.

”I am not sleeping,” she murmured.

”Of course not.”

”I am resting with determination.”

”I thought it was hostility.”

”I’ve become less ambitious.”

Allandra laughed softly.

Only when Serali caught her wrist and guided her hand into her hair did Allandra begin gently stroking it.

The simple trust of the gesture undid something inside her.

Serali pretended not to notice.

Kind of her.

Eventually the silence grew heavier than the sofa.

Allandra stood. ”Come.”

Serali followed her toward the bed. At the edge of the room she hesitated.

Allandra stopped immediately. ”What is it?”

Serali looked around the room.

Then back at Allandra.

”I think...”

She searched for the words.

”I would like to stay here tonight.”

Allandra blinked. ”I thought that’s what we were doing.”

”I know.”

Serali smiled faintly. ”I just wanted to say it.”

”So that tomorrow...”

She looked down. ”...I remember it was my choice.”

Allandra’s throat tightened. ”It always will be.”

Serali stepped closer. ”I know.”

A pause.

”I needed to hear you say it.”

Allandra lifted a hand. ”May I?”

”You may.”

She brushed a loose strand of black hair behind Serali’s ear.

No urgency.

No desperation.

Just touch.

Serali leaned into it with a tired sigh. ”I don’t want to solve anything tonight.”

”Neither do I.”

”I don’t want to be brave.”

”You don’t have to be.”

”I’ve been brave for several days.”

”You have.”

”I think...”

She rested her forehead lightly against Allandra’s shoulder.

”...I’d like someone else to be brave for a little while.”

Allandra wrapped both arms around her.

”I can do that.”

Later they lay together beneath the green quilt.

No speeches.

No strategies.

Just warmth.

Serali rested her head against Allandra’s shoulder, studying the ceiling.

”I am still Serali,” she said quietly.

Allandra looked down at her.

”After all this...Princess, daughter, Royal Mage. Whatever they call me next. I’m still Serali.”

”Yes.”

A pause.

”And you’re still Allandra.”

Another.

”...Also queen.”

”Unfortunately.”

Allandra laughed.

”And Mama,” Serali continued.

”Yes.”

”And terrible at pretending not to worry.”

”I am improving.”

”No.”

”No?”

”No.”

Allandra smiled into her hair. ”I suspected as much.”

Serali shifted a little closer beneath the blankets. ”Everly will clap.”

”Very loudly.”

”I think she might startle the entire square.”

”I hope she does.”

Serali smiled. ”So do I.”

Outside, winter still held the city.

The festival still waited.

So did Vulmar.

None of that had changed.

But tonight, for the first time since the letter had arrived, Serali wasn’t returning to the room where she had spent years teaching herself that safety was something built alone.

She fell asleep in the Queen’s bed.

By choice.

And Allandra, listening to the slow, steady rhythm of her breathing, thought that perhaps some victories were quiet enough to be mistaken for ordinary nights.
