The Queen's Mage

Chapter 156: By Oath, Not Blood

The scrape of chairs echoed around the council chamber.

Harrek gathered the confiscated broadsheets into neat bundles.

Daravan was already making amendments to the palace security roster.

Veryya closed one notebook and opened another without ever seeming to pause between them.

Marielle reached for her engineering sketches.

The meeting, at last, seemed to be ending.

”One moment.”

Hagen’s voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

The room settled again.

Allandra looked toward her brother. ”What is it?”

Hagen rested one hand on the nearest broadsheet.

”We’ve decided what we do.”

He nodded toward Harrek.

”The investigation.”

Toward Daravan.

”The security.”

Toward Veryya.

”The legal case.”

Toward Merrow.

”The nobility.”

Finally toward Serali.

”And the work continues.”

A faint smile touched his mouth.

”All good decisions.”

He tapped the paper once.

”We still haven’t decided what we say.”

Silence settled over the table.

Hagen lifted one of the pamphlets.

”King Vulmar has already made certain the story reaches the public.”

He let the paper fall again.

”We don’t get to decide whether people hear it.”

His gaze moved around the room.

”We only get to decide whether the first answer they hear is his...”

”...or ours.”

Veryya folded her hands. ”The question is no longer whether the matter becomes public.”

”No,” Hagen agreed.

”It already has.”

”The question is how we frame it.”

Allandra nodded slowly. ”Then frame it.”

Hagen leaned back. ”First question.”

He looked at Serali.

”Do we deny it?”

Silence.

Veryya answered first.

”I would strongly advise against it.”

”Unless,” Hagen said, ”we’re prepared to defend the denial.”

Allandra looked toward Serali.

”Are we?”

Serali thought of Cillian.

Of violet eyes.

Of Vulmar’s certainty.

Of Night magic answering her as it never had anyone else.

”...No.”

Veryya inclined her head. ”Then a public denial simply gives Vulmar an opportunity to prove us dishonest.”

Daravan nodded once. ”And we’d lose credibility before the legal case even begins.”

”No denial,” Allandra said.

”Good.”

Hagen nodded.

”Second.”

He looked around the table.

”We acknowledge the claim...”

”...but refuse to confirm it.”

Veryya considered. ”It has merit. We state that King Vulmar has made allegations concerning the Royal Mage’s birth. Then we state that those allegations have no bearing on her office, her oath, or the Crown’s refusal to surrender any person against their will.”

She paused. ”We neither confirm nor deny paternity.”

Hagen looked thoughtful. ”The nobles will hear confirmation.”

”They probably will.”

”The common people?”

”They may not.”

Harrek shook his head. ”The pamphlets already speak with too much certainty.”

”If we answer with ambiguity...”

He shrugged.

”...they’ll assume we’re hiding something.”

Merrow nodded reluctantly. ”I agree. The uncertainty becomes the story.”

Veryya made a small note. ”A valid concern.”

Hagen nodded. ”Third.”

He looked directly at Serali. ”We confirm it.”

The room grew quiet.

Serali felt every eye turn toward her.

Daravan spoke first. ”Security implications increase immediately.”

”Yes.”

Harrek nodded. ”So does every foreign intelligence service’s interest.”

Veryya looked at Serali. ”It also gives us the greatest control over the narrative.”

”Provided,” Hagen added, ”we move before Vulmar defines it completely.”

Serali stared at the grain of the council table.

Publicly.

Saying it herself.

I am his daughter.

The thought settled like iron beneath her ribs.

She could already hear Vulmar’s voice claiming victory.

Blood.

Princess.

Return.

The words had always belonged to him.

To repeat them, even to deny what he meant by them, felt like lifting the collar yourself so everyone could admire the chain.

Allandra’s voice was quiet. ”Serali?”

She looked up.

Not Can you?

Not Will you?

Only...

What do you think?

Serali swallowed. ”Not yet.”

Allandra nodded immediately.

”Then not yet.”

Hagen studied her for a long moment.

Then he nodded too.

”Good.”

Serali frowned.

”Good?”

”You’ve identified the problem.”

”I wasn’t aware it required identifying.”

”It does.”

He leaned forward. ”If the first thing the kingdom hears from you is...”

He gestured toward the broadsheets.

”...I am Vulmar’s daughter...”

He shook his head.

”Then he’s already won.”

Silence.

Hagen looked down at the pamphlets.

”They’re asking the wrong question.”

He tapped the page again.

”Blood.”

His finger moved to Serali’s oath, lying beside the engineering reports.

”They should be asking about this.”

Veryya’s eyes followed the gesture. ”The oath.”

”Exactly.”

Hagen looked around the table.

”Everything that defines Serali happened after she crossed our border.”

”She sought asylum.”

”She accepted appointment.”

”She swore service.”

”She chose.”

He smiled faintly.

”Blood tells people where she came from. The oath tells them who she is.”

The room remained very still.

Hagen looked toward Serali. ”That is the story.”

He paused.

”...Serali serves by oath...”

Another heartbeat.

”...not blood.”

Nobody spoke.

Even Veryya let the words sit.

Finally she nodded. ”It lacks legal precision.”

Hagen sighed. ”I expected nothing less.”

”It is,” she admitted, ”politically effective.”

”And substantially true.”

Marielle, who had spent the last several minutes sketching absently in the margin of her engineering notes, looked up.

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

”I have an idea.”

Every head turned toward her.

Daravan closed his eyes. ”I know that expression.”

”You have not heard it.”

”I’ve seen it before.”

”It is a good idea.”

”That has never been sufficient reassurance.”

Marielle ignored him. ”The festival already culminates in public magic. Light blessings, warming braziers, lantern processions. Her Majesty traditionally lights the eastern flame before dawn. What if we recreated the sun-shadow lattice?”

Silence.

Serali froze.

Allandra answered first. ”No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Marielle blinked. ”I haven’t explained.”

”I understood enough.”

”But—”

”It happened accidentally,” Serali said before Marielle could continue.

”My magic was unstable.”

”And recovering,” Allandra added smoothly.

”It wasn’t something we created deliberately.”

Daravan nodded. ”It was an unpredictable interaction.”

Marielle looked from one face to another. ”You all sound remarkably rehearsed.”

No one answered.

”...Interesting.”

She frowned at her sketch.

”Fine.”

With a firm stroke she crossed out the lattice.

”What actually mattered wasn’t the lattice.”

She began drawing again. ”It was that everyone saw shadow magic doing something they didn’t expect.”

She looked toward Serali.

”They expected a weapon. They got protection.”

Her pencil moved quickly. ”So don’t recreate the lattice.”

She drew an arched pattern over a line of tiny circles. ”Recreate the idea.”

The room leaned in despite itself.

“During the midnight ceremony, the wind off the harbor always threatens the lanterns in the square,” Marielle said.

“Every year someone loses half a sleeve to a brazier because everyone is drunk, sentimental, and carrying open flame. The Royal Mage could create a shadow canopy over the children’s lantern path. Not darkness. Cover. A shelter. Let the light show through.”

Her hands moved as she spoke, sketching shape in the air.

“Thin. Patterned. Dark enough to be seen, but translucent at the edges. The lanterns would glow beneath it. Her Majesty adds sunfire to the eastern flame, and the city sees both together. Light protected by shadow. Spring arriving under night’s last kindness.”

Silence settled over the council chamber once more.

Marielle flushed. “That sounded better in my head.”

“No,” Serali said.

Marielle looked at her.

Serali’s throat felt tight. “No. It sounded… effective.”

Marielle brightened.

Verya looked at Allandra. “It is dangerous.”

“Yes,” Allandra said.

Daravan added, “Security would be a nightmare.”

“Everything is,” Marielle said.

“That is not comforting.”

“It is consistent.”

Harrek rubbed one hand over his mouth. “The square would need rooftop watch, inner barricades, second-ring plainclothes, controlled lantern stations, no open access to the dais—”

“See?” Marielle said. “Possible.”

Daravan looked at her. “The Commander listed problems.”

“He listed solvable things.”

“I dislike engineers.”

“Many do.”

Hagen, who had been quiet, looked toward Serali. ”It isn’t enough.”

Marielle frowned. ”The demonstration?”

”It answers one question.”

He tapped the broadsheet.

”Whether people should fear your magic.”

His finger moved to Vulmar’s proclamation.

”It doesn’t answer his. He says you’re his daughter. That you’re here against your will. If all the city sees is your magic...”

”...he’ll say we’ve simply put you on display.”

Serali’s stomach tightened.

Displayed.

Hagen met her eyes. ”Your magic shows what you can do. Your oath shows what you’ve chosen.”

Silence settled across the table.

Then Allandra spoke. ”What are you suggesting?”

Hagen didn’t look away from Serali. ”A public reaffirmation. At First Sun.”

Veryya’s fingers stilled over her pen.

Daravan looked immediately to Allandra.

Serali stared. ”In front of the city?”

”Yes.”

”And the nobility.”

”They’ll already be there.”

Serali laughed once.

It sounded unpleasant.

”You do know how to make a festival.”

”I’ve been told.”

Allandra shook her head. ”It asks too much.”

Hagen met her gaze. ”Politically...”

He chose his next words carefully. ”...I don’t see a stronger answer.”

For just a heartbeat, something old passed silently between the twins.

Then Hagen looked away first.

Serali looked back at the broadsheets.

Princess.

Daughter.

Return.

The words were already moving through both kingdoms.

Market squares. Drawing rooms. Barracks.

If she stayed silent...

Someone else would keep speaking for her.

She hated that almost as much as she hated standing in front of strangers.

”I don’t like it.”

Hagen nodded. ”I know.”

”I don’t like performing.”

”I know.”

”I don’t like becoming an argument.”

His expression softened. ”Neither do I.”

He glanced toward Vulmar’s proclamation.

”Unfortunately...”

”...King Vulmar has already made you one.”

The honesty stole some of her anger.

Rude.

Veryya spoke before the silence could settle again. ”A public oath need not address every allegation.”

Serali looked toward her.

”We would not require you to confirm paternity. The oath would reaffirm your office, your voluntary service, your refusal to submit to foreign custody.”

She closed the folder.

”The law already recognizes those things. The city merely hasn’t heard them from you.”

Serali nodded slowly. ”That...”

She sighed. ”...is slightly less terrible.”

”I strive for incremental improvement.”

Allandra looked at Serali. ”You do not have to decide today.”

Serali met her eyes.

No pressure.

No command.

Only time.

She wanted to take it.

She also wanted Vulmar’s proclamation burned before another child heard the word princess attached to her name.

”What would the oath actually say?”

Veryya slid a blank sheet of paper across the table. ”Whatever you choose.”

”Within legal form.”

Serali frowned. ”So... not the original oath?”

”No. This one is for the kingdom.”

She looked toward Hagen.

”You want the oath.”

She turned to Marielle.

”You want the demonstration.”

Marielle blinked. ”...Apparently.”

Hagen smiled faintly. ”Unfortunately.”

”I dislike the unfortunately.”

”I’ve noticed.”

Despite herself, Serali smiled.

Only a little.

”No stage.”

Marielle looked horrified. ”...Ground level?”

”Ground level.”

”But visibility—”

Daravan interrupted. ”Ground level.”

Marielle sighed dramatically. ”...Ground level can be designed.”

”And no guards surrounding me.”

”There will be guards,” Daravan said.

”There will not be guards surrounding me.”

Allandra looked toward him.

After a long moment, he nodded. ”Visible distance. Plainclothes closer.”

Serali nodded. ”Good. No one prompts me if I stop speaking.”

Veryya made another note. ”Agreed.”

”No one calls me princess.”

”Absolutely not,” Veryya said.

Allandra’s voice was quieter. ”Never.”

Serali looked around the room.

Daravan was already calculating security.

Harrek had begun sketching patrol routes.

Marielle started drawing the shadow canopy.

Veryya was outlining legal language.

Hagen was annotating broadsheets, already thinking about how rumors spread.

Not around her.

With her.

The distinction felt unexpectedly important.

Veryya slid the blank page a little closer. ”Begin with what you refuse.”

Serali picked up the pen.

For a long moment, she simply held it.

Then she wrote.

I refuse to be returned.

Another line.

I refuse to be claimed by blood.

She hesitated.

Then wrote one final sentence.

I serve by oath.

The words sat quietly on the page.

Not finished.

Not perfect.

But hers.

Chapter 157: Before Someone Else Does

The palace was becoming impossible to keep quiet.

Lessa had managed for two days.

She had redirected walks through the corridors. Rearranged lessons. Declared entire wings of the palace unexpectedly unsuitable for four-year-old princesses. She had confiscated three broadsheets, distracted two curious servants into discussing recipes instead, and developed an alarming talent for appearing exactly where gossip began.

It would not last.

The four of them gathered in the Queen’s private sitting room while the dining room was prepared for supper.

Lessa stood near the door, hands folded neatly before her. ”I nearly lost today.”

Allandra looked up immediately. ”What happened?”

”One of the younger kitchen boys asked Her Highness whether she was excited to have another princess in the palace.”

Silence.

Serali felt the room tighten around her.

Lessa continued before anyone could ask. ”He meant no harm. He’d only heard the rumors.”

”What did Everly say?” Allandra asked.

”She asked whether pudding counted as another princess.”

For one bewildered heartbeat no one spoke.

Then Hagen rubbed a hand across his face. ”...That sounds like Everly.”

Lessa smiled faintly. ”He was so confused that he forgot what he’d been asking. The pudding won.”

Hagen nodded solemnly. ”A powerful negotiating tactic.”

Lessa’s smile disappeared again. ”I don’t believe we’ll be that fortunate twice.”

The room fell quiet.

Allandra looked toward the window. Beyond it, the palace grounds lay peaceful beneath the fading winter light. Peaceful enough to lie.

Hagen was the one who broke the silence. ”We tell her tonight.”

No one argued immediately.

Serali looked at him. ”You suggested the dinner.”

”I did.”

She had expected the idea to come from Allandra.

Instead, Hagen folded his hands. ”Courts tell stories.”

He looked toward the fire.

”When families don’t tell their own...”

”...someone else always does.”

He met Serali’s eyes.

”I would rather Everly’s first memory of this comes from the people who love her.”

Allandra drew a slow breath. ”I agree.”

She looked toward Lessa.

”Thank you.”

Lessa inclined her head. ”I only delayed the conversation, Majesty.”

”You gave us time.”

”I hope it was enough.”

”So do I.”

Lessa hesitated. ”If I may...”

Allandra nodded.

”Her Highness has noticed.”

Serali blinked.

”Not the rumors. The adults.” Lessa’s expression softened.

”She keeps asking why everyone is trying so hard to smile.”

That hurt more than Serali expected.

Children always noticed.

Just not always what adults imagined.

Allandra rubbed lightly at her temple. ”We’ll keep it simple.”

”The truth,” Hagen agreed.

”But only the truth she can carry.”

Serali looked between them. ”And if she asks questions we can’t answer?”

”Then we tell her that.”

Veryya would have approved of the answer.

Serali found herself almost smiling.

Almost.

Dinner began as it usually did.

Everly announced, with great seriousness, that the palace geese were ”still being rude.”

Hagen looked appropriately concerned. ”Again?”

”They hissed at me.”

”A diplomatic incident.”

”I wasn’t doing anything.”

Lessa cleared her throat delicately. ”Her Highness attempted to convince them to attend First Sun.”

”I was inviting them.”

”You were following them rather enthusiastically.”

”I was inviting them quickly.”

Hagen nodded gravely. ”An understandable distinction.”

”They don’t appreciate festivals,” Everly declared.

”No vision,” Hagen agreed.

Serali smiled into her cup.

For a little while, dinner managed to resemble itself.

Bread was passed.

Lessa cut Everly’s roast into smaller pieces while listening with complete seriousness as the princess explained that one particularly disagreeable goose had ”looked guilty.”

Allandra found herself smiling with everyone else.

It felt almost normal. Almost.

She caught Hagen watching Everly over the rim of his glass.

Lessa, too, was paying closer attention to the princess than her plate, gently steering the conversation back toward geese whenever it wandered too near the palace beyond the dining room.

Serali laughed when Everly insisted the geese would apologize ”once they thought about what they’d done.”

The sound eased something tight beneath Allandra’s ribs.

For just a heartbeat, she wondered if perhaps they could have one ordinary dinner after all.

Then Everly looked up.

She studied the table with the solemn concentration only a four-year-old could summon.

Then she carefully set down her fork. ”...Why is everybody acting strange?”

The room fell quiet. Not abruptly. Inevitably.

Everly frowned. ”Did I do something?”

Allandra reached across the table and covered her daughter’s hand. ”No.”

Her voice came more gently than she had intended. ”You didn’t do anything.”

Everly relaxed a little. ”Then why does everyone look like when Cook dropped Uncle Hagen’s birthday cake?”

Hagen blinked. ”I’d forgotten about that.”

”I hadn’t,” Lessa murmured. ”It was an excellent cake.”

”It landed icing-side down,” Everly informed Serali mournfully.

”My condolences.”

”It was very sad.”

Allandra smiled. A real one this time.

It lasted only a moment.

Then she drew a slow breath. ”There is something we wanted to tell you.”

Everly looked around the table. ”About Serali?”

Serali blinked. ”How did you know?”

Everly looked genuinely puzzled. ”Because everyone keeps looking at you.”

She hesitated. ”...Are you sick?”

”No,” Serali said.

Everly’s brow furrowed. ”Are you leaving?”

The question struck the table harder than any of them had expected.

Serali went still. Allandra’s chest tightened. Hagen lowered his eyes to his glass.

”No,” Serali said.

The answer came quickly.

Almost too quickly.

Then, more steadily— ”No. I am not leaving.”

Everly’s shoulders dropped by a fraction.

Only then did Allandra realize the fear her daughter had been carrying.

Of course she had.

The adults had whispered. Doors had closed. Serali had missed breakfast.

The palace had become careful.

Children rarely understood the reasons. They almost always noticed the change.

“Then what?” Everly asked.

Allandra looked at Serali.

Serali’s fingers rested near the edge of her plate, one thumb brushing the seam of her cuff.

She gave a small nod.

Allandra drew a breath. ”King Vulmar has been telling people something about Serali. Something that is true, but that he is using to hurt her.”

Everly sat a little straighter. ”King Vulmar?”

She frowned. ”...The Night King?”

”Yes.”

Everly’s face fell. ”The one who hurt Father...”

”...and Grandma...”

”...and Grandpa?”

Allandra nodded. ”Yes.”

Everly looked immediately to Serali. ”...What about him?”

Allandra drew a slow breath. ”He’s Serali’s father, and he wants her to go back to Lyehira.”

Everly blinked.

Then turned to Serali. “Vulmar is your papa?”

Serali looked down at her plate.

“I suppose,” she said. Then stopped, jaw tightening.

Allandra almost intervened. She did not.

Serali tried again. “He is my father. But he was not a papa.”

Everly considered that with extreme seriousness.

“That is different,” she said.

Serali looked up.

“Yes,” she said quietly. “It is.”

Everly nodded, as if filing this in the correct drawer. “My papa was Father.”

Allandra’s throat closed.

Everly looked at her. “Finnian.”

“Yes,” Allandra said, very softly. “Finnian was your father.”

“And my papa.”

“Yes.”

Everly looked back to Serali. “Vulmar was not your papa.”

“No.”

“Was he a bad papa?”

The question was so plain that it left no room for court language.

Serali’s hand curled against the table.

Allandra said, “Everly—”

“No,” Serali said.

Allandra stopped.

Serali looked at Everly.

Her face had gone pale, but her voice was steady enough to hold.

“Yes,” Serali said. “He was bad.”

Everly’s mouth turned down.

Not confusion. Anger.

Small, immediate, moral.

“Then he should not get to say you have to go home.”

Serali’s breath caught.

Hagen looked toward the window.

Allandra pressed her fingers together beneath the table until they hurt.

“No,” Serali said. “He should not.”

Everly leaned forward. “Is Lyehira home?”

Serali closed her eyes briefly.

When she opened them, there was something tired in her face. And something grateful. The child’s questions were hard, yes. But they were clean.

“I was born there,” Serali said. “Some people I loved were there. My brother is there. But I do not want to go back to King Vulmar.”

Everly looked troubled. “Your brother has to stay with the bad papa?”

“For now.”

“Can we get him?”

Allandra and Serali both went still.

Hagen set his glass down carefully.

Everly looked from adult to adult. “What?”

Allandra said, “It is more complicated than that.”

Everly frowned. “Why?”

“Because Lyehira is another kingdom,” Hagen said gently. “And kings tend to become difficult when people take things from inside their borders.”

Everly looked at him. “A brother is not a thing.”

Hagen’s face softened.

“No,” he said. “He is not. That is why it matters how we try.”

Everly accepted this reluctantly.

For now.

Everly looked back to Serali. “Are you a princess?”

Serali made a face. A full, immediate, horrified face.

It was so clearly not the face of someone receiving a compliment that Everly’s brow puckered.

“No,” Serali said.

Hagen’s mouth twitched. “Legally complicated.”

Serali pointed at him. “No.”

He lifted both hands. “Not a princess.”

Everly looked dissatisfied. “But if your father is a king—”

“No,” Serali said.

Everly blinked.

Serali softened the word with visible effort. “Some people will call me that because they want the word to do something. I do not use it.”

“Why?”

Serali’s mouth tightened. “Because it feels like a collar.”

Everly looked down at her own throat, as if imagining it.

Then she frowned. “But princess is not a collar.”

Serali went still.

Everly looked genuinely confused now, not argumentative. “Princess is good. I am a princess.”

Allandra’s chest tightened.

Serali’s expression changed in a way Allandra could not quite bear: pain, care, and the immediate recognition that this answer mattered because Everly was not asking politically. She was asking as a child whose title had only ever meant home.

“Yes,” Serali said carefully. “It is good for you.”

Everly considered that.

Serali continued, “Because when people call you princess, they mean Everly. They mean your mother’s daughter. They mean someone loved and protected and listened to.”

Everly nodded slowly, though her frown remained.

“When people call me princess,” Serali said, “they do not mean Serali. They mean King Vulmar’s daughter. They mean something he can use. Something he can claim.”

Everly’s small face darkened. “That is wrong.”

“Yes.”

“Because princess should mean the person.”

Serali looked at her.

For a second, she seemed unable to answer.

Then she said, very quietly, “Yes.”

Everly thought about this with great seriousness.

Then she asked, “If I called you princess, would it feel like a collar?”

Serali’s throat moved.

Allandra almost reached for her.

Serali answered honestly. “A little.”

Everly’s eyes widened, stricken.

“Oh.”

“It would not be your fault,” Serali said quickly.

“But it would feel bad?”

“Yes.”

Everly sat back in her chair, offended on Serali’s behalf and slightly offended at the word itself for betraying her.

“Then I won’t call you it.”

Serali’s mouth trembled.

Only a little.

“That is my preference.”

“Good,” Everly said firmly. “I will call you Serali.”

Hagen’s voice, when he spoke, was softer than usual. “A wise ruling.”

Everly looked at him. “It is not a ruling. It is her name.”

The room went quiet.

Serali stared at the child.

Then, after a moment, nodded.

“Yes,” she said. “It is.”
